50-year-old Brian Thompson worked his way up to be the CEO of United Healthcare, which is currently the largest private payer of health insurance benefits in the United States. Louisa was raised to view God as nothing more than a human concept and spiritualism as a form of superstition. Then, in 1982 at a Manhattan nightclub, she suffered a cardiac arrest brought on by lidocaine poisoning, shot out of her body, and experienced an other-worldly journey to her god source - the Sun.Returned to her body, she dismissed her experience as a hypoxic hallucination.  Welcome back to then & now!  To kick off our 5th season, we are joined by Professor Amir Alexander, a historian of mathematics in UCLA's Luskin Department of History.  His latest book, Liberty's Grid, examines how Founding Father Thomas Jefferson transformed early America into a mathematical landscape. Jefferson's vision of an empty, gridded space was intended to create a framework for people to act freely. Alexander delves into the paradox: though this grid symbolized American ideals of freedom, it also reinforced hierarchies and constraints. Natural obstacles such as bodies of water or geological features, as well as Native Americans who had lived on the land for centuries, were perceived as obstacles in Jefferson's quest to overlay order on an unordered natural world. Over time, opponents of the Jeffersonian grid developed alternative visions of how to organize the American landscape, but we still see remnants of this system in the rigid grids of middle America and in cities such as New York City, particularly Manhatten. We reflect on how this story and the perception of ordering nature is relevant to us today. Amir Alexander is an adjunct professor in the UCLA Meyer and Renee Luskin Department of History. Professor Alexander's work illuminates the deep interconnections between mathematics and its social, cultural, and political setting, and highlights the intertwined relationship between critical mathematical developments and broader historical trends that motivated these developments and gave them meaning and purpose. Professor Alexander has written multiple books on this topic, and his 2014 book, Infinitesimal: How a Dangerous Mathematical Theory Shaped the Modern World, was selected as a finalist for the Phi Beta Kappa Science Award in 2015.

For instance, Pianist, Art Tatum was a father figure, saxophonist, Lester Young an uncle and singer, Billie Holiday was a big sister to Hazel to name a few. When she was a teenager, she started singing and playing across Manhatten. She became a regular at a new club, Cafe Society. Unlike other clubs at the time where black musicians played primarily for white patrons, this club was based on equality and diversity which made it like no other club in New York City at the time. When she toured, she was adamant to only play in places that did not segregate the audience. This limited her venues but she kept her stance. Stephen Shaiken is here to talk about his rock and roll novel titled Queensborough Rock - the story of a young struggling rock and roll manager Jack Bernstein who lives in New York City.It's the year 1971. Jack doesn't have a fancy office in Manhatten. He doesn't have a flashy car and back stage passes. Instead, he works out of a basement apartment in working class Queens and drives around looking for hidden talent in a beat down Volvo. The talent he does steal gets stolen by Manhatten agents he calls “sharks”. To finance a demo tape for his top talent, he had to borrow from a loan shark and pawn a friend's guitar. But the tape fails to land a deal and Jack is running out of chances. His last hope is an offer from a friendly Queens mobster. Jack is asked to manage his obnoxious nephew as best as he can. If he does, doors will open. Stephen is a veteran writer of fiction, both short stories and novels and he says all of his work is based on his life, places he's been and events he's witnessed. Basquiat as the artist himself was like tofu, able to soak up and take on so many different flavors. Middle class child, homeless teen, bankable star of the art world. He was a graffiti artist selling postcards on the street, celebrated painter wearing armani suits to work in his studio. Basquiat inhabited so many different worlds, people can pick the story that resonates with them because as Basquiat famously said, “I am not a real person. I am a legend.” It seems an impossible task, but I always like to look for stories that will help to understand the real person behind the legend. With Basquiat, I first learned of him as a graffiti artist turned studio artist. The graffiti work that helped him rise to prominence was a team effort. Basquiat and his friend Al Diaz made humorous, thoughtful and critical text based pieces on the walls of Manhatten. In Diaz's telling when he got to know Basquiat as a teen, it was immediately obvious to him, that Jean Michel was not a graffiti artist. Diaz laughed as he said Basuiat “drew the sliding doors in a subway car and put his name in it: ‘Jean the Bohemian.'
