Did you know that bathrooms and showers – particularly in shared spaces – are a veritable breeding ground for pathogen, some of which we see in the form of mold and the build-up of toxic bio films on surfaces. Body fats and soap scums provide a rich food sauce for micro-organisms such as airborne bacteria Serratia Marcescens, which thrive in humid conditions. We know that people with weakened immune systems are so much more vulnerable to the illnesses associated with infection and let's face it, none of us go into the shower with an expectation that we might get sick. So how do we keep those shower walls clean? Well let's think big – BIG TILES. Porcelanosa have developed XXL Hygienic Ceramic Tiles that are 5 feet long - which means just one piece fits the wall of a shower or tub surround. XTONE Porcelain slabs are 10 feet high which means a floor to ceiling surface with no joints. Why does this matter? Well hygienic glaze will not harbor pathogen and surface impurities are easily removed to prevent build up – it is reassuring to know the evidence - INTERNATONAL STANDARDS Test ISO 10545 - Resistance to Stains -  has determined these surfaces can be easily cleaned and the most difficult contaminants washed away, greatly reducing the need for aggressive chemicals. Think about this. When we unload our dishwasher our ceramic tableware is sparkling clean, sanitized and fresh to use - again and again. The principle is the same with large ceramic walls - So, when planning the shower surrounds for your facilities please reach out to Porcelanosa. The designer in you will love the incredible options and your specification will deliver the longest & best lifecycle value bar none.

Jane Rohde is affectionately known in FGI circles as “the mother of the Residential Guidelines.” Her passion for residential health care facility design and advocacy for the aging and vulnerable populations led to the inclusion of residential health, care, and support facilities in the Guidelines documents beginning with the 2018 edition. In this episode, Jane explains how nursing homes, initially intended for short-term care, evolved into a care model that often widens the gap between “those who have and those who have not.” Jane further emphasizes the need for community-centric design, pointing to common design mistakes including poor acoustics in large spaces, inappropriate lighting disrupting circadian rhythms, and lack of contrast in colors leading to falls. Jane also shares why a detailed functional programming process, engaging community stakeholders to identify service gaps and needs, is “the nitty gritty” that she loves the most.”    Sponsored by: The Facility Guidelines Institute: The keystone to health care planning, design, and construction    Link to show notes: https://fgiguidelines.org/podcast/e10-designing-care-spaces-with-our-future-selves-in-mind-jane-rohde/  Learn more about AIA self-reporting LUs: https://fgiguidelines.org/aia-self-reporting-lus/  Connect with us on LinkedIn and X (Twitter)

Do you ever wonder how can we socially connect and still be safe? What is the role of the design of the physical spaces around us? What strategies could work for both you, and perhaps your loved ones living in senior housing? In Episode 9 of the Shared Space podcast, I sit down with Patricia Gruits of MASS Design Group to explore synergies between designing for COVID-19 and designing for social connection with a special focus on senior living. Patricia shares findings from her recent report “Designing Senior Housing for Safe Interaction The Role of Architecture in Fighting COVID-19”. Understanding the toxic health effects of loneliness, her team identified ways to help people safety connect. We explore how to design for joy, hope, and connection rather than fear. Not ignoring the dangers, but rather finding the synergies in these. Patricia is a Senior Principal & Managing Director with MASS Design Group, a leading not-for-profit design firm, where she leads both design and research projects in health, education, and equity. Her work has been featured in journals of architecture and design as well as on the BBC World News and the Discovery Channel. She has lectured and taught design across the nation. Patricia has a Bachelor of Science and Master’s in Architecture from the University of Michigan, a program that is well known for their integration of purpose driven design and research that continues to inform her approach today. How to Approach Sustainability in Healthcare Design: Build for Impact

Building has long been a part of the human experience. It's been a critical aspect in the evolution of life. Now construction and design are more than just about how it looks and how it works. The new horizon is focusing on sustainability, resilience, and material transparency. To lend expertise on the subject, architect Jane Rohde, Principal at JSR Associates, with a list of distinguished awards and certifications, joins Hthe show. Sustainability is a buzzword in architecture, but what does it really mean right now? Rohde shared, “Sustainability isn't a single attribute. It's integrated together. Being in healthcare, I see this more prominently, the unintended consequences of not looking at performance.”Alongside sustainability comes resiliency, which describes the ability of a building to prevent and recover from damage. “Resiliency now really ties into emergency preparedness. Looking at nursing homes hit hard by COVID or how hospitals on the Texas coast prepared for Hurricane Harvey. If design intention and operation intention are considered together, it's a much better outcome,” Rohde commented. Another critical subject is material transparency. To be fully transparent is difficult for manufacturers and supply chains. It's not just what the product is; it's where it's from and the conditions of that area. “With material transparency, there are bigger questions that we don't have answers to, regarding social responsibility. But the conversations are happening. What's critical is not to look at it from a single attribute perspective. The better way may be from an exposure and risk perspective,” Rohde stated.

Healthcare Interior Design 2.0

Join in this intimate conversation with Jane Rohde, Principal and Founder of JSR Associates Inc.——an architecture and interior design firm, specializing (and known for) senior living. Jane believes in a global cultural shift toward de-institutionalized senior living facilities through research, advocacy, and humanistic approaches to care. She and her team are committed to supportive design that recognizes elders’ individuality and results in thriving, joyful environments. It was hard to choose a favorite part of the interview because the entire conversation was magical. If I had to choose a favorite part, it was how Jane refers to her years in this field as a “covert operation”——asking senior living residents the right questions and then listening attentively to their answers, sneaking into management and operations meetings to uncover the biggest challenges and then working tirelessly to solve them.  In 2015, Jane received the first Changemaker Award for Environments for Aging from The Center for Health Design and in 2018, she received the ASID Design for Humanity Award. In October 2018, she was a Women in Design honoree awarded by Healthcare Design Magazine. Jane has been recognized as an Honorary Alumni of Clemson University for her teaching contribution to the Architecture + Health program. Jane is certified by the American College of Healthcare Architects, the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers, and is a LEED Accredited Professional. She sits on various senior living, healthcare, and sustainability committees to support the creation of a tipping point for person-centered care environments like The Research Advisory Council which is the research arm of The Center for Health Design, the 2010 Cycle of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities, and the ASHRAE 189.2 High Performance Healthcare Facilities Committee. Her specialties include: Senior living consulting, healthcare consulting, architecture and interior design for senior living and healthcare projects, focus groups, facilitations and development consulting. Learn more about Jane Rohde and JSR by visiting: http://www.jsrassociates.net/ Here’s what you’ll learn in the interview:  Germany’s fascinating medieval era community — The Fuggerei—one of the earliest known retirement communities where widowers and widows when to live, eat and wander through gardens when they were no longer able to work. How Jane opened her business because she saw a wide gap between operations, user needs, and design. She set out to close that gap by designing fully functioning spaces to better serve residents and staff. The story of Jane’s friend and senior living resident Miriam who influenced Jane to become a leader in making changes to the senior living environment, and the table Jane designed to help wheelchair bound Miriam have more dignity in social situations. * How the most rewarding aspects of this work are when you see a resident’s life changed for the good. The first step to take when you’re a new healthcare interior designer just starting out. Why education is now playing an increasingly important role in bringing more people to this field. How millennials are inspiring new senior living models.
