The intersection of cybersecurity and healthcare is more critical than ever, as technology continues to shape the way patient care is delivered. At HIMSS 2025 in Las Vegas, we sat down with Lee Kim, Senior Principal of Cybersecurity and Privacy at HIMSS, to discuss the pressing security challenges facing healthcare organizations, the role of artificial intelligence, and the balance between innovation and risk.AI in Healthcare: Promise and PerilArtificial intelligence is rapidly being adopted across the healthcare sector, yet many organizations still lack structured governance around its use. Kim highlights the “wild west” nature of AI adoption, where policies are either non-existent or underdeveloped, creating risks related to privacy, data security, and patient outcomes. While AI-powered diagnostic tools, like those used in radiology, have the potential to improve patient care by identifying critical conditions early, blind trust in AI-generated results presents serious risks. Without proper oversight, reliance on AI could lead to incorrect medical decisions, putting patient safety in jeopardy.Cybersecurity Gaps in Healthcare OrganizationsOne of the biggest concerns in healthcare cybersecurity is the over-reliance on security tools without a clear strategy. Many organizations invest in the latest technology but neglect foundational security practices, such as governance, policy development, and staff training. Kim points out that less than half of cybersecurity budgets are allocated to governance, leading to disorganized security programs.Another persistent challenge is the human factor. Social engineering and phishing attacks remain the top attack vectors, exploiting the inherent culture of healthcare professionals who are trained to help and trust others. Organizations must focus on proactive security measures, such as regular training and simulated attacks, to reduce human error and strengthen defenses. The Financial and Operational RealityBudget constraints continue to be a challenge, particularly for smaller hospitals and community healthcare providers. While larger organizations may have more resources, cybersecurity spending often focuses on acquiring new tools rather than optimizing existing defenses. Kim stresses the importance of a balanced approach—investing in both technology and governance to ensure long-term resilience.Another concern is the increasing dependence on third-party services and cloud-based AI tools. If these services become too expensive or go offline, healthcare organizations may face operational disruptions. The lack of contingency planning, such as backup vendors or alternative systems, leaves many institutions vulnerable to supply chain risks.Building a More Resilient Healthcare Security ModelAs technology continues to drive innovation in healthcare, organizations must adopt a proactive cybersecurity stance. Business impact analyses, vendor risk assessments, and tabletop exercises should be standard practice to prepare for disruptions. Kim also raises the idea of cyber mutual aid—a model similar to emergency medical mutual aid, where healthcare organizations collaborate to support each other in times of crisis.HIMSS 2025 provides a forum for these critical conversations, bringing together global healthcare leaders to share insights, challenges, and solutions. For those interested in diving deeper, the HIMSS Cybersecurity Survey is available online, offering a comprehensive look at the current state of healthcare security. To hear the full discussion on these topics and more, listen to the episode featuring Lee Kim, Sean Martin, and Marco Ciappelli from HIMSS 2025 On Location.Guest: Lee Kim, Senior Principal of Cybersecurity and Privacy at HIMSS | On LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/leekim/Hosts:Sean Martin, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining CyberSecurity Podcast [@RedefiningCyber] | On ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/sean-martinMarco Ciappelli, Co-Founder at ITSPmagazine [@ITSPmagazine] and Host of Redefining Society Podcast & Audio Signals Podcast | On ITSPmagazine: https://www.itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-podcast-radio-hosts/marco-ciappelli____________________________This Episode's SponsorsHITRUST: https://itspm.ag/itsphitweb____________________________ResourcesLearn more and catch more stories from HIMSS 2025 coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/himss-2025-health-technology-and-cybersecurity-event-coverage-las-vegasHIMSS 2024 Cybersecurity Report: https://www.himss.org/resources/himss-healthcare-cybersecurity-survey/____________________________Catch all of our event coverage: https://www.itspmagazine.com/technology-and-cybersecurity-conference-coverageTo see and hear more Redefining CyberSecurity content on ITSPmagazine, visit: https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-cybersecurity-podcastTo see and hear more Redefining Society stories on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-society-podcastWant to tell your Brand Story Briefing as part of our event coverage? In this episode of Critical Thinking, Sinead Leahy, Co-Head of Cardano Advisory is joined by Nick Gibson, Managing Director, Cardano Advisory, and Dan Jackson, M&A Senior Principal at Mercer, to explore the key findings from our recent report, ‘Unlocking value and opportunities from UK pension funds – a private equity perspective'. There has been a significant shift in the Defined Benefit (DB) landscape in recent years, with many schemes moving from a deficit position to surplus. Surveying over 100 private equity (PE) firms, we uncovered the opportunity for private equity to unlock value from UK pension funds. Key takeaways include: • The M&A opportunity from better funded DB schemes: pension schemes moving from a deficit to surplus means that schemes are no longer a blocker to M&A activity but rather a potential value driver, making a target business more attractive. Moreover, better funded schemes may mean less regulatory involvement in a deal, and less risk of deal value leakage. • Investors are seeking to access surpluses: Companies can often access pension surpluses when a scheme is wound up via a transfer to an insurance company, however, the government recently announced upcoming reforms that are designed to facilitate the release of surpluses on an ongoing basis. Many companies are delaying insurer ‘buyouts' to capture the potential upside, while some are already using surpluses to help fund their Defined Contribution (DC) schemes. • What can be done to channel more pension money into PE: While mature, closed DB schemes have reduced investments into illiquid assets such as Private Equity, there are potential opportunities for greater allocations into private capital across open DB schemes, Local Government Pension Schemes, and DC schemes. The upcoming UK Pension Schemes Bill may facilitate consolidation of these pension schemes, which is designed to incentivise them to invest in a broader set of assets, such as private capital. At the same time, greater trustee education and engagement between pension funds and the PE sector will be crucial to unlocking further investment. Citations:1. Insight and analysis from Day 1 of the Solar & Energy Storage Summit 2024The 2024 Solar and Energy Storage Summit from Wood Mackenzie kicked off in San Francisco this week. David Banmiller was there to capture all the debate and discussion on the future of the solar energy sector. If you couldn't be there in person, we've got you covered. David is joined by a roster of expert analysts and industry leaders to explore the key topics. It's a packed show, with conversation around the technology, policy and financing of the solar industry. There's over a terawatt of solar, and gigawatts of storage in interconnection queues around the US. If all of that was built today, we'd have all the solar and storage we need to decarbonise the grid. How are these bottlenecks being eased? Why are projects taking years to complete? Becca Jones-Albertus, from US Department of Energy, joins David first on the show to discuss it, and analyse the latest advanced solar tech. Plus, what impact has the IRA had on the industry? Cassidy DeLine is CEO of Linea Energy, and she argues that there are three clear wins from the historic bill. David gets a new perspective on financing for projects from Kelsey Clair, Director at NY Green Bank, and a look at storage technology and government policy with Mike Graveley from the California Energy Commission. Finally, it wouldn't be an energy podcast in 2024 without a look at the integration of AI. Kendra Williamson is Senior Principal at Key Capture Energy, and she talks with David about the nuances of storage optimisation. In this episode, our guest argues that not only is the energy transition happening, it's happening faster and more profoundly that you can imagine…and it's being led by China. The ‘age of renewables' will be very different than the ‘age of carbon' and the same forecasting assumptions do not apply. The energy transition is being driven by technology, economics, geo-strategy and, of-course, necessity. And the data proves it. Our guest is Kingsmill Bond, Senior Principal at the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI). Kingsmill's latest analysis is available in the link in the show notes. https://rmi.org/wp-content/uploads/dlm_uploads/2024/06/RMI-Cleantech-Revolution-pdf.pdf

Robert Krueger, CPA, PFS, Senior Principal at Alexander Randolph, provides insights on the importance of financial planning at every stage of life, how to reframe “retirement,” and the benefits of financial transparency with loved ones. About Robert Rob began his career in financial planning by first obtaining his CPA license and working for KPMG for over 7 years, during which time he rose to the level of senior tax manager and advised clients on various tax matters. From there he started his own tax and advisory company, working with individuals and small businesses and helping his clients with tax planning and financial resource management. In 2000, he merged his firm with Alexander Randolph Inc, a financial services company located in Northern Virginia, expanding his services by offering investment and wealth management, along with comprehensive financial planning. Rob received his Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) designation in 2006 and continues to work with individuals in need of financial planning and wealth management services. His focus is on clients who are nearing retirement or have already moved into this next stage of life, helping them manage their investments so that they can feel financially confident and truly enjoy their lives. Key Takeaways Financial planning is a wholistic approach that encompasses investment management, insurance, and estate planning. Financial planning is important at all stages of life. In each decade, the priorities of financial planning shift, not just for those about to retire. Avoid fixating on “the number”—the amount of money you'll have when you retire. People should think about what they want to do – and what kind of life they want to live – and only then determine what they'll need financially to support that lifestyle. Effective communication about finances with your loved ones is part of aging well. Talking about money can be uncomfortable, but having financial transparency helps your loved ones honor your wishes and support you in the best way.
Do me a favor: close your eyes and picture the most famous sports and entertainment venues that have been built over, say, the last 40 years. I bet some of the places that come to mind are stadiums like Camden Yards in Baltimore, Oracle Park in SF, Tottenham Hot Spur Stadium in London or even the Sphere in Las Vegas. One thing they all have in common? They were all designed by Populous, the most legendary sports and entertainment architecture firm in the world. Populous is celebrating it's 40th anniversary, and my guest, Populous Sr Principal Brian Mirakian, is celebrating his 20th year with the iconic firm. In our wide ranging conversation, Brian and I talk about the evolution of stadium design, and how it changes to address the wants and needs of the modern fan. We also talk about the importance of physical spaces in an increasingly virtual world, balancing design for different types of fans, and the rise of eSports specific design. The Kansas City resident also has thoughts on how much credit Taylor Swift should get for the Chiefs' latest NFL playoff run. All this, and the legendry Reflux Gourmet Lightning Round at the end, too. Thanks for listening!

The USACE dredges more than 200 million cubic yards of sediments every year as part of their mission to ensure that ports and waterways remain open to traffic. In S5E6, we talked with Lt. Gen. Spellman, the 55th Chief of Engineers and the Commanding General of USACE, about his 70/30 goal to increase the beneficial use of these sediment from about 30% up to 70% by the year 2030. Supporting the USACE environmental protection and restoration missions, this ambitious goal calls for innovative uses of sediment. Our guests are advancing the practice of thin layer placement (TLP) through the development of new guidelines based on leading practice applications. In Season 6, Episode 9, hosts Sarah Thorne and Jeff King, Lead of the EWN® Program at USACE, welcome Candice Piercy, Research Environmental Engineer at the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), USACE; Ram Mohan, Senior Principal at Anchor QEA and Adjunct Professor at Texas A&M University; and Monica Chasten, Coastal Engineer and Project Manager in the Philadelphia District, USACE. Candice and Ram coauthored the recently published Guidelines for How to Approach Thin-Layer Placement Projects with their colleague, Tim Welp, a renowned dredging expert who passed away in 2021. Tim was the inspiration behind the guidelines, and this episode is dedicated to him. Monica is an innovator and leading light in the dredging community with responsibilities for keeping open the coastal navigation channels in NJ and Delaware. She was an early adopter of EWN and one of the first movers of beneficial use of dredge materials. TLP is defined as the purposeful placement of thin layers of sediment (e.g., dredged material) in an environmentally acceptable manner to achieve a target elevation or thickness. As Candice explains, “TLP really reflects a different approach where we're purposefully placing the material in relatively thin lifts to accomplish an ecological objective. We're often doing this because the natural process of sediments collecting in our marshes is not sufficient for it to keep up with rising sea levels.” Early in his career, Ram wondered whether dredged material could be used as a resource to improve coastal habitats. TLP essentially consists of spraying dredge material so that it rains down in a very gentle manner. Rom notes, “Whether you place it over a marsh or in a subaquatic habitat, this low stress placement method allows it to gently deposit over the existing bottom, making it very conducive to future recovery within two to three growing seasons.”Monica gets passionate about sediment and doing the right things with it. “Prior to becoming a Project Manager for navigation projects, I was working on beach fill projects for the Corps where every grain of sediment is incredibly valuable. Then I moved into the navigation world in the back bays in NJ where we were basically throwing beautiful sediment away. Looking at all types of sediment and how we could use it innovatively became a mission for me.”Jeff notes, “Sediment is supposed to move and be transported by natural processes in various areas of estuarine systems. When we take it out, we're starving the wetlands. With TLP, these systems are going to be much better off.” Jeff adds that LTG Spellmon's 70/30 goal and the new guidelines are game-changing: “I talk with practitioners all over the country, and I know people have been eagerly awaiting them. They are really going to move the needle.”For more information and resource links, please visit the EWN Podcast page on the EWN website at https://www.engineeringwithnature.org/ • Jeff King at LinkedIn• Candice Piercy at EWN• Ram Mohan at LinkedIn• Monica Chasten at EWN

Why would we want to discuss brutalism and mid-century modern architecture with an architect and two engineers? Because we believe in learning about approaching art and design from a variety of perspectives and backgrounds. Brutalism seemed like a perfect fit for us to bring in experts and find where connections could be found and also how we see art differently. Our hope is that listeners will be inspired to step outside their comfort zones and start having discussions of their own with people with different perspectives and expertise. We all walked away from our discussion with broader understandings of brutalism, and hopefully, you will too. In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Becky Bloom, Assistant Director of Curatorial Affairs at SUMA, Dr. Matthew Roberts SUU Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Computational Sciences, Mark Harris Structural Engineer and Senior Principal with Reaveley Engineers, and Chad Neilson CEO, Design Principal, MHTN Architects.
