On this week's program, we bring you highlights from a public meeting and open house that took place at the Main Public Library on March 18th about the Downtown & NuLu Street Network Plan. Louisville Metro Government is leading a plan to advance quick-term action projects for streets in Downtown and NuLu, intended to promote walkability and safety for pedestrians and to serve as a blueprint for capital improvement projects over the next several years. The public was invited to come be a part of this planning effort by joining this open house and kickoff of the plan activities - featuring a presentation from Jeff Speck from Metro's planning consultant team! So listen in as renowned urban planner and author Jeff Speck shared his insights on reimagining downtown Louisville through the lens of walkability and why fostering a pedestrian-friendly environment is imperative for a flourishing city. The evening kicked off with Joel from Stantech. Jeff Speck is a city planner and author who advocates internationally for more walkable cities. Being creative ain't easy. There is something about putting yourself into your work that can be hugely rewarding, but also massively exhausting. Doing something without putting your heart and soul into it can come with its own drawbacks, but at the end of the day the results of your work are not tied directly into how you see yourself. For people who consider themselves to be creative and work in creative roles, the sense of burnout can be real. At the same time, creative work can be invigorating and rewarding in the right context, giving the right leadership, and working for the right clients. This is what Mack Garrison was trying to create when he founded Dash Studio, where they make videos that matter.  Dash is a ‘high-end animation and motion design studio that believes in the power of creativity and community.' This is one of the lessons that he learned in the 9 plus years that Dash has been doing business. A big part of their success comes from community: communities of creatives, communities of partners, communities of supporters, and frankly communities of communities. In fact, you could say that creativity either comes from, or at least is enhanced, by community. As part of their effort to create community, they have their annual Dash Bash event, June 11-13, 2025. If you are interested in motion design, or just interested in meeting some great people in Raleigh, NC, check it out. Great speakers, workshops, and social events. Dash Studio - https://www.dashstudio.net/Dash Bash - https://www.dashbash.net/Mack Garrison LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mackgarrison/

About Joshua Sanabria and "Engage": I completed my Masters in Architecture from Andrews University in Michigan in 2014. Since then, I've worked with corporate architecture, marketing, and even a drone company. In 2018 I branched out to start GoArchitect as an architecture book publishing company. As with many startups, the original plan quickly changed and we began to find our niche in the educational master planning niche. Since 2018, we've helped organizations with over $14.4 Billion in facility, investment, and design innovation opportunities. Throughout this time, we've undertaken many software projects to help improve the design, community outreach, and financial side of master planning. Our most ambitious product is called Engage (https://www.engagebygo.com/). Engage allows anyone to create online forms with sticky notes, drawings, and interactive activities to gather insights, and leads, and engage their audience. Daniel also sets out some ground rules about working with and for under-represented groups.  He talks about how vital it is to avoid positioning designers as saviours and how engaging stakeholders in community co-design projects involved balancing listening, respecting input and paying participants. Is where we live destroying our health or making it better?  In this episode with Ryan Frederick and Dr. Stephanie dive into place as a tool for longevity.  We discuss cities around the world, and even the geographical advantages and disadvantages of different areas of the US & Canada.  We talk about how the same place can change over time and highlight current trends like the mass exodus from California and New York City to Florida and Texas and the reasons behind them. You'll find out the ways in which a location can help you live better and longer, and how to choose the right one for you. Finally, they'll touch on community design, and how to determine if where you live is helping or harming your health. We'd like to thank our sponsors, Athletic Greens - redeem an exclusive offer here: athleticgreens.com/stephanieLMNT Electrolytes - A FREE 7-flavor sample pack! - https://www.drinklmnt.com/DrEstimaOrion Red Light Therapy - get 10% off your order with Promo Code “STEPHANIE10” https://www.orionrlt.ca/?ref=StephanieLumen - get $25 off your order with Promo Code “DRSTEPHANIE25” https://www.lumen.me/?fid=1799Ancestral Supplements - Use Promo Code “ASA10” for 10% off any purchase https://shop.ancestralsupplements.com/discount/Tribe10?rfsn=5900205.652074&utm_source=refersion&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=5900205.652074PRIMEADINE - get 10% Off your Order with Promo Code “DRSTEPHANIE10” - https://oxfordhealthspan.com/products/best-spermidine-supplement And follow me on social:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr.stephanie.estimaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/betterwithdrstephanie Join the Hello Betty Community here - https://hellobetty.club/membership/ Episode Overview: 6:20 Introduction9:42 Welcoming Ryan14:56 Wrong Place Can Take Decades Off Your Life18:45 Loneliness Vs. That year off has now turned into a decade of BREAKING NORMAL adventures throughout all 50 states and 20+ countries. He travels the world as a keynote speaker and facilitator of Breaking Normal Experiences, radical retreats and workshops (though he likes to call them playshops, as what's more pure than play?) based on the principles of raw honesty and emotional freedom. He found that the common theme through his journey and experiences was that so many people seemed to be trapped in self-imposed prisons, keeping a lid on their genius, joy, & growth. Thus Breaking Normal was birthed (right after seeing the birth of his Daughter in his living room) as a way for people to free themselves from this self-imposed prison.   Join The Brotherhood Join the Front Row Dads private Facebook community so you can ask questions, share ideas, and be part of a supportive group of incredible brothers who help one another navigate the role of marriage and fatherhood. Resilience, civic infrastructure, participatory design — these topics and more play important roles in the work of Taryn Sabia. Taryn is the director of the Florida Center for Community Design and Research at the University of South Florida's School of Architecture and Community Design, where she's also a research associate professor. In a wide-ranging conversation with host Courtney Kashima, AICP, she talks about why planners must encourage the development of a civic infrastructure in their communities — and how they can do that. Taryn discusses the Mayors' Institute on City Design, which she hosted in 2014 and 2017 and gives city officials the opportunity to work with planners, architects, and designers on tough development challenges in their cities. In reflecting on the interdisciplinary nature of her work, she underscores the need for allied professions to come together on resiliency issues — such as building erosion due to saltwater inundation — as many Florida communities grapple with these realities on a daily basis.

Residents and business owners worry about how best to protect their homes and buildings. City planners want to know how to preserve vibrant neighborhoods in coastal communities, and elected officials seek sustainable approaches to guide future growth. The Center for Urban and Community Design at the University of Miami’s School of Architecture is on the front lines responding to the urgent needs of South Florida by collecting data on housing stock, creating guides for residents to explain options for protecting their homes, and working with cities and national foundations to develop new standards and guidelines for preserving South Florida’s architectural history.

https://entrearchitect.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/ScreenShot2016-12-08at10.40.28AM.png ()Public Interest Design Firms At EntreArchitect, we’re learning that we need to build a better business so we can be better architects. We want to make the work a better place. That’s why we became architects in the first place. We want to provide a positive social impact. What if by building better businesses we built a better world? What if a part of what we do benefits the public in an impactful way? Stay tuned as we share a new online resource to learn more on this idea. This week at EntreArchitect Podcast, Public Interest Design Firms with Mia Scharphie and Gilad Meron of Proactive Practices. Mia’s Origin Story Mia has a masters in landscape architecture but feels that she’s secretly a social worker with designer skills. She’s always been interested in people who get left out and how to bring them back in for most of her life. She worked at a nonprofit in San Fransisco, http://www.publicarchitecture.org/ (Public Architecture), that takes on design challenges that the private market doesn’t have an incentive to be involved in. Today she runs http://creativeagencyco.com (Creative Agency), a research and design consulting practice that works with affordable housing and arts organizations focusing on projects that use creative tools to make change and http://buildyourselfworkshop.com (Build Yourself Workshop), an empowerment workshop for women in creative fields teaching women how to negotiate, be an advocate, and be proactive. Gilad’s Origin Story Gilad has a background in design from a program called Design and Environmental Analysis, an interesting mix of social science research and architecture and design. He got involved in participatory planning and design as a method to shake the environments we live in. That led to public design or community design, as some like to call it. Currently he’s on the board at http://www.communitydesign.org (The Association for Community Design) doing research writing with nonprofits and foundations who do different types of community development work. Living in New Orleans, he started a small coworking space and design collective, https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiwh-qNiOXQAhUmw1QKHQXrCUMQFggeMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fthebluehousenola.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNFa29xyUzZONItIhbOBlDxYtHRdVQ&sig2=QCA_95l_rLBgQFXvqeMcvQ (The Blue House), where others can come and have dialogue about civil issues. What is Proactive Practices? Proactive Practices is a web publication that collects case studies on socially impactful design firms. They’re mostly looking at the different ways that designers design for social impact and find ways to do that within their business models. They aren’t just telling the stories and the beauty of the project, but to look at the organizations that make these projects possible. They want to know how you can build a business where you can create social impact over and over again. What inspired you to do this? Mia, Gilad and Nick, their third teammate, had all previously worked or interned at Public Architecture in San Fransisco. At the time, with a limited amount of experience, they had to figure out what pieces were relevant for them to begin the work. Through that organization, they were connected with many people in the growing field of public interest design. There were a public interest projects in that area, but no examinations of the practices behind those projects. They wanted to understand how firms were being built to sustain practices that focused on this kind of work instead of doing just one random project. When they dove in further, they realized the complexity of research they needed to build an understanding. Over the last few years, they’ve gathered lots of insights as to what would be needed

We wanted to be sure that our name was unique and would clearly separate our studio from the many other residential architects in our region. We wanted a name that would be easy to remember, endure and outlive the firm's founders when the next generation might take the lead. We wanted a name that would not burden us as principals, forcing us to be the only people that prospects would want to meet when developing new business and interacting with clients. If our names were on the door, would we be the only people qualified to represent the firm? We wanted a name on which we could build a brand. We named our firm, http://www.fivecat.com (Fivecat Studio) and succeeded in building a successful brand of high-end residential architecture in the lower Hudson Valley of New York State. This week on the Entrepreneur Architect Podcast, I am speaking with a person who understands the how important proper branding is to the success of every architect.
