On our podcast – At Home, On Air – we continue our mini-series, Changemaker Interviews, where we highlight the impact of changemakers on the quality of our lives. These individuals have challenged and changed systems, introduced new ways of thinking and told previously untold stories. In this second installment of the series, we welcome Valerie Fletcher, the Executive Director of the Institute for Human Centered Design and a true leader in the field of inclusive design. She inspires us as well as the next generation of changemakers by sharing insights from her years of expertise working with people to design with intention. Join us as we dive into a powerful discussion on the challenges to creating an inclusive world, one where everyone has the opportunity to thrive — regardless of ability, age, race, gender, or income. Valerie's energy and conviction are matched only by her deep belief in the power of design to change lives. We explore thought-provoking topics, including the value of interdependence and how people living with functional variations — whether related to mobility, neurodiversity, or aging — offer us important lessons about living with ambiguity and resilience. We also discuss how the shared experiences of the aging body and mind could motivate us all in the pursuit of an inclusive world — one that not only accommodates but empowers everyone. We hope Valerie's personal stories and insights will inspire you to make positive changes in your own home, life, and community! Send us a textIn this episode, host Andrea Atherton welcomes guest Egan Sanders to explore the fascinating realm of past and future lives. Reincarnation has long been a topic of intrigue, but beyond mere curiosity, it holds profound potential as a tool for self-discovery and healing. Egan shares insights into how our soul's journey extends beyond this lifetime, carrying lessons, patterns, and even unresolved emotions that shape our present experiences. By accessing past lives, we can gain a deeper understanding of who we are, why we face certain challenges, and how we can break free from cycles that no longer serve us.Andrea and Egan also discuss the powerful impact of past-life connections in relationships. Many of the people we encounter—whether friends, family, lovers or even adversaries—may have played significant roles in our previous incarnations. Recognizing these soul connections can bring clarity to unresolved tensions, unexplained attractions, or deep emotional bonds that defy logic. By exploring these dynamics, we can cultivate greater compassion, release karmic wounds, and create more conscious, fulfilling relationships in the present. Finally, the conversation delves into the concept of future lives and how glimpses into what's ahead can empower us to make choices aligned with our highest potential. Rather than seeing the future as fixed, Egan explains how it is shaped by our present actions and energetic frequency. Through practices such as past-life regression, meditation, or intuitive work, we can tap into these multidimensional aspects of our existence, allowing us to step into greater awareness, purpose, and healing. Tune in for a mind-expanding discussion on the eternal journey of the soul and how embracing reincarnation can transform the way we navigate our lives and relationships.Egan Sanders https://www.mytransformationcoach.nethttps://www.attractitgames.com30-minute Consultation with Andrea https://www.andreaatherton.com/booking-calendarAndrea Atherton Websitehttps://www.andreaatherton.com/Love Anarchy Websitehttps://www.andreaatherton.com/podcasthttps://loveanarchypodcast.buzzsprout.comLove Anarchy Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/loveanarchypodcast/Andrea Atherton Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/andreaatherton-17/

Have you ever wanted to travel through time and see what your life will be like in the future? While we want the best possible future for ourselves, we often fail to make decisions that would make that a reality. So why are so many of us so disconnected from our future selves? This week on The Evolving Leader, co-hosts Jean Gomes and Scott Allender talk to psychologist Professor Hal Hershfield. Hal is Professor of Marketing, Behavioural Decision Making, and Psychology at UCLA's Anderson School of Management and is committed to the work of helping people make better long-term decisions. In his 2023 book ‘Your Future Self: How to Make Tomorrow Better Today' Hal explains that in our minds, our future selves often look like strangers. Many of us view the future as incredibly distant, making us more likely to opt for immediate gratification that disregards the health and wellbeing of ourselves in the years to come. He says that people who are able to connect with their future selves, however, are better able to balance living for today and planning for tomorrow. This is a fascinating listen.Referenced during this episode:Your Future Self: How to Make Tomorrow Better TodayOther reading from Jean Gomes and Scott Allender:Leading In A Non-Linear World (J Gomes, 2023)The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence (S Allender, 2023)Social:Instagram           @evolvingleaderLinkedIn             The Evolving Leader PodcastTwitter               @Evolving_LeaderYouTube           @evolvingleader The Evolving Leader is researched, written and presented by Jean Gomes and Scott Allender with production by Phil Kerby. Religion has long helped people envision the future. The 2024-2025 program year will be one in which the congregation is oriented both its future and the futures of its members. Over the course of the year there will be a pivotal national election, the adoption of a congregational strategic plan, and a vote to elect a settled minister. Throughout the series questions about how the climate crisis, the global rise of right-wing populism and white supremacy, and escalating inequality will shape the coming years will form a backdrop. As we grapple with them, we will aspire to deepen the spiritual life of our community, and the spiritual lives of our members and friends, by offering a program devoted to exploring three aspects of the future—societal, personal, and planetary--from a variety of religious perspectives.

I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:46  Hi, Be It babe, how are you? Hi, I'm great. Happy FYF, Fuck Yeah Friday. This Friday, I am bringing this to you. Well, it's happening because of my amazing team, but I am in Los Angeles. If you're watching this, I am definitely on my home recording it, but when you're listening to this. I am in Los Angeles for the weekend, and that's me proud of my win. So I will save that information for you for a second. But if you are new here, hi, welcome to the Be It Pod. I am so grateful that you are here. This is podcast was a dream of mine for a long, long, long, long time. And what's so cool is that we are past three years, we're past 400 episodes. We've got amazing, amazing guests coming from you, and you make me a better person, you just do, because you challenged me to find really cool people that are helping you be it till you see it. So thank you so much. I hope you listened to this week's interview and our recap. If you haven't, make sure you listen to those, because it's important. There's some great stuff. There's some gems for someone. And if it's not for you, it'll be for someone you know in your life. And sometimes we're just listening to things like, oh my god, this is definitely for my friend, or this is definitely for my mom. This is for my sister. And like, how cool that you could be the messenger of the thing that they need? That's amazing. That's actually could be a win you celebrate. So FYFs, I celebrate. I win of yours and I win of mine. So this is from Jeanne Cho, she's an agency member, and she wrote, FYF I now have converted two out of my five work days to begin at my desired start time of 9 am. I truly believe this is a result of manifestation. I'm looking at a 10% drop in client retention due to a 20% price increase. I sign up three new clients this week, two which will become duets, which is where I needed this business to go. One of these new clients gave me a 30% tip on a five-pack at the new highest price in town rate. What? Just about my first international trip in three years, to take a week-long trip to Barcelona with my mom and my daughter. Oh, my god, three generations. That's amazing. Okay, so Jeanne, I just want to, like, shout you out. Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us. Can we just, go, I just want to do something. I'll highlight a couple things in here for anyone listening to this, she is going to have a 10% drop in client retention due to 20% price increase. Guess what? She's still making 10% more. That's how that works. So when you increase your prices 10% you can lose 10% of your clients and make the same amount of money in less time. She's actually going to be making 10% more money in less time. So way to freaking go. She also got people to be in duets which means she's making even more money on those. And somebody decided that her price is weren't even high enough, and they tipped her even more. So, like, just signs from the universe that you are doing an amazing job. Yes, money can be scary to charge for, but like you, obviously, are giving people the benefits that make them go this is worth it. So way to go. And so excited for you to have three generations on an international trip together. That sounds so amazing. Lesley Logan 3:17  All right, I'm gonna do one more. This one's from Brigid Pearse. She is out of Australia, a member of like, four years just doing great. FYF, new client coming today. Resonate with my marketing, is excited to work with me. My energy is low, lots of motions coming up about a lot of things. I'm being kind to myself and staying focused. Started booking a holiday for July. You know what? Good for you. Like, a holiday when you're feeling low, having something to look forward to is just like the right thing to do. And actually, the timing of that win, Brigid, couldn't be any better, because it's actually what I had to do. Lesley Logan 3:52  So my win is that I'm why I'm in Los Angeles. Is because months ago, I booked myself a little Pilates vacation for after my tour. I could have said let me think about it. Let me wait on it. I mean, like I could have signed up last minute. I'm sure could have gotten one or two days in, but I was like, no, I want all three days, and I want to lock my spot in five months early so that I have this to look forward to. So I have this thing and it's so easy for us to procrastinate on making a decision about something that can make our future self happy. We can procrastinate. We can talk ourselves out of it. We can say, oh, now's not the right time to spend that money. I'll just wait till three months before, when the spots are like, there's still a spot left, but like, you have to deal with your money how you want to deal with it, and that's fine. I'm not here to tell you what to do about your money here, but what I am saying is, like, do not put off making a decision that your future self is going to love just because your present self is low or tired or a little bit nervous about things. Because guess what you also do? If you remember Nikole Mitchell's episode, when we do things like that, when we book these trips, when we book these times when we kind of put ourselves outside of our comfort zone, it forces us to show up in a different way prior to the thing or after the thing. So that we actually can make up for the investment we made. We step up into a higher power. You would not step up to the person who would be able to plan that vacation if you didn't plan that vacation in the first place, just wouldn't. So sign yourself up for things that scare you a little bit, because it will force you to step up into that person. That's a great way to be it till you see it. I mean, don't just scare yourself all the time into being like till you see it, but it is an option. It's an option. So I'm super, super excited that I said that I, like, made sure that this happened, and I planned this as far in advance as I did. Because, trust me, there's a few times like, Oh, my god, am I doing the right thing, like, I'm gonna need more than one, two days at home before I leave again, and it's like, no, absolutely it's gonna be the right thing. It's gonna be the absolute right thing. And yes, there's all these reasons why it might not be the right thing, but I actually don't have to focus on those, because I can just trust that it's the right thing to do and I'm in the right place I need to be. Lesley Logan 5:44  So here is your mantra. Let's see. I just pull this out at random. So what do we have? I have everything I need to succeed. I have everything I need to succeed. My dear, you have everything you need to succeed. I have everything I need to succeed. Let's say it together. I have everything I need to succeed. Yeah, you do. Go have an amazing Fuck Yeah Friday. Make sure you celebrate your wins, if not with me, with someone that you know, and send this to them, let them know what's an FYF. Because what's so fun is when I know that people are doing FYFs all over the place. I know I have teachers who graduated from my programs who do with their clients on Fridays. Like, I absolutely love this. This is the best thing that can be contagious. So until next time you guys, Be It Till You See It. Lesley Logan 6:24  That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. I've long been curious about the difference in our immediate drive and our future drive. I often refer to it as our appetites. We have the appetite of what I want right now, and what I want in the future, and they don't often align. Right now I want to eat that donut. In the future I want to lose weight. And the conflict. We think it takes self discipline and drive to cater to the future need and we frustrate ourselves with succumbing to the right now appetite and we think we lack self-discipline and drive. We don't. We have all the self-discipline and drive we need. What we lack is clarity on our core motive. Our why. And find out why our long term desires aren't driving us more than our right now desires. I'm reminded of one of Jerry Seinfeld's bits that I want to break down for you. Drive with me a moment. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. Jane Rohde is affectionately known in FGI circles as “the mother of the Residential Guidelines.” Her passion for residential health care facility design and advocacy for the aging and vulnerable populations led to the inclusion of residential health, care, and support facilities in the Guidelines documents beginning with the 2018 edition. In this episode, Jane explains how nursing homes, initially intended for short-term care, evolved into a care model that often widens the gap between “those who have and those who have not.” Jane further emphasizes the need for community-centric design, pointing to common design mistakes including poor acoustics in large spaces, inappropriate lighting disrupting circadian rhythms, and lack of contrast in colors leading to falls. Jane also shares why a detailed functional programming process, engaging community stakeholders to identify service gaps and needs, is “the nitty gritty” that she loves the most.”    Sponsored by: The Facility Guidelines Institute: The keystone to health care planning, design, and construction    Link to show notes: https://fgiguidelines.org/podcast/e10-designing-care-spaces-with-our-future-selves-in-mind-jane-rohde/  Learn more about AIA self-reporting LUs: https://fgiguidelines.org/aia-self-reporting-lus/  Connect with us on LinkedIn and X (Twitter)

Have you ever felt like you're barely surviving your days, but there's this voice down deep telling you that there's more to life? A lot of times when it comes to dreaming bigger, we don't do it often enough because we get hung up in our current circumstances and are trying to solve the problems right in front of us. But what if we were able to view it from a different vantage point? It's like standing on top of the mountain and seeing the path clearly below vs being in the middle of the trees trying to see where you're going. When you start to tap into your future self and let her guide… that is where everything in your entire life begins to shift.   It's all about dreaming bigger and making decisions today that will serve your future self five years down the line. Let's not focus solely on short-term solutions or get caught up in our current circumstances. Let's look at any problems you might be facing now…. If you were the woman you desired to be + had the life you want to live, how would you show up in this situation?    The really cool thing is you can begin connecting with this future version of you now so that you feel more peace in your current circumstances. The end goal isn't the goal itself, but who you are becoming along the way because the thing in the end… money, bigger house, etc won't bring you happiness. You creating that feeling from within is what will bring that thing to you AND allow you to enjoy it when it does arrive. So what if you started creating from that space vs wanting out of the circumstances you have now? I teach you how to show up as YOUR best self now + create the feelings you desire so that you begin to call and openly receive the things you desire in your life to come to you. And because you've experienced your life through the lens of your highest self through The Breathwork Method, you are also able to hold it. This is where Mom Life Mastery Collective comes in. I teach you how to show up as her now and create a life you're obsessed with while raising kids!  It's time to stop living in fear of the unknown and start creating the future you desire.  Listen to the episode and Join Mom Life Mastery Collective so that in 6 months from now you are looking back and seeing how far you've come instead of wondering what if.

Hal Hershfield on How We Perceive Our Future Selves

Social Science Bites

On his institutional web homepage at the University of California-Los Angeles's Anderson School of Management, psychologist Hal Hershfield posts one statement in big italic type: “My research asks, ‘How can we help move people from who they are now to who they'll be in the future in a way that maximizes well-being?” In this Social Science Bites podcast, Hershfield and interviewer Dave Edmonds discuss what that means in practice, whether in our finances or our families, and how humans can make better decisions. Hershfield's new book, Your Future Self: How to Make Tomorrow Better Today, offers a popular synthesis of these same questions. Much of his research centers on this key observation: “humans have this unique ability to engage in what we call ‘mental time travel,' the ability to project ourselves ahead and look back on the past and even project ourselves ahead and look back on the past while we're doing so. But despite this ability to engage in mental time travel, we don't always do it in a way that affords us the types of benefits that it could.” Those benefits might include better health from future-looking medical decisions, better wealth thanks to future-looking spending and savings decisions, or greater contentment based on placing current events in a future-looking context. Which begs the question – when is the future?  “The people who think the future starts sooner,” Hershfield explains, “are the ones who are more likely to do things for that future, which in some ways makes sense. It's closer, it's a little more vivid. There's a sort of a clean break between now and it. That said, it is a pretty abstract question. And I think what you're asking about what counts in five years, 10 years, 20 years? That's a deeper question that also needs to be examined.” Regardless of when someone thinks the future kicks off, people remain acutely aware that time is passing even if for many their actions belie that. Proof of this comes from studies of how individual react when made acutely aware of the advance of time, Hershfield notes. “People place special value on these milestone birthdays and almost use them as an excuse to perform sort of a meaningfulness audit. of their lives, … This is a common finding, we've actually found this in our research, that people are more likely to do these sorts of meaning-making activities as they confront these big milestones. But it's also to some degree represents a break between who you are now and some future person who you will become.” Hershfield concludes the interview noting how his research has changed him, using the example of how he now makes time when he might be doing professional work to spend with his family. “I want my future self to look back and say, ‘You were there. You were present. You saw those things,' and not have looked up and said, ‘Shoot, I missed out on that.' I would say that's the main way that I've really started to shift my thinking from this work.”

David Edmonds is a philosopher, writer, podcaster and presenter. His most recent book is a biography of Derek Parfit. Parfit: A philosopher and his mission to save morality. “Derek was perhaps the most important philosopher of his era. This scintillating and insightful portrait of him is one of the best intellectual biographies I have read.” -Tyler Cowen Other books include: The Murder of Professor Schlick, Would You Kill the Fat Man? and (with John Eidinow) the international best-seller Wittgenstein's Poker.   He's a Distinguished Research Fellow at Oxford University's Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics. With Nigel Warburton he produces the popular podcast series Philosophy Bites. For three decades, he was a multi-award winning presenter/producer at the BBC.   We start off discussing “Trolley problems” and the ethical implications of choosing between lives now and in the future. Edmonds provides a nuanced perspective, discussing the argument that while a life in the future is (almost) as valuable as a life today, the decision to kill five lives today could potentially reduce future life. Would you kill five people today, or five people in 100 years? "I think I would choose five in a hundred years, but it would be a very marginal decision…on the whole, I agree with Parfit in I think that there should be no moral discounting in that I think a life in the future is as valuable as a life today. But presumably if you kill five lives today, you are affecting who gets born. So that's why I would kill five lives in the future because I might be also reducing future life as well if I take lives today." We chat about if thought experiments are even useful at all (contra, Diane Coyle, who dislikes them).   I then ask about real life challenges such as NHS budgets and potentially choosing between saving pre-term babies or diabetics. I ask David about his favorite paradox (think about God and a very large breakfast) and give him the St Petersburg paradox to answer. "Can God cook a breakfast so big that He can't eat it?"  We discuss the life of Derek Parfit, his personality and obsessions. Whether he might have been a good historian (vs philosopher), the pros and cons of All Souls College and if an autistic cognitive profile mattered. David gives his view on why Derek's second book was (and is) considered inferior to his first. We also touch on Effective Altruism (EA) and Derek's influence on longtermism and possible foundational philosophical roots to the EA movement. We end on what chess opening David would use against Magnus Carlson, what countries David would like to visit, current projects and life advice David has. Transcript and video available here.

Turns out we make demands on our future selves that our present selves would think are unrealistic or unreasonable. Your past experiences do not determine what you can accomplish in life moving forward.
