There is a divide among sustainability advocates concerning urban development. At a glance, it may seem that halting all development would be beneficial. However, John Olson urges us to look beyond the surface and consider the implications of how we develop our cities, as well as the potential consequences of stopping development altogether. He believes we need to shift the status quo mindset of development. Rapid urbanization, suburban sprawl, and the degradation of natural resources have strained infrastructure, exacerbated social inequalities, and threatened environmental sustainability. New urban planning approaches foster deeper human connections, mitigate climate change, and build communities that are resilient, equitable, and prosperous for future generations. John's passion and dedication is creating inspiring places that foster deeper connections with each other and our natural environment. With over two decades of experience integrating smart growth principles across various project types, his strength is creating innovative and sustainable solutions, engaging a wide variety of stakeholders, and leading projects from vision to implementation and beyond. John earned his Landscape Architecture degree from Kansas State University. He has a passion and vested interest in projects that enrich the Colorado Springs area in which he and his wife of over twenty years have lived and raised their family of five. His commitment extends to serving on multiple boards. Recognized for his impact, he currently serves as Chair of the Colorado Springs Urban Renewal Authority and Co-Chair of ULI Southern Colorado. He helped found the Colorado Chapter of the Congress for the New Urbanism, and Colorado Springs Urban Intervention. He is an Accredited New Urbanist, Registered Landscape Architect, and LEED Accredited Professional. In this episode of Better Buildings for Humans, host Joe Menchefski sits down with Liz McCormick, an assistant professor of architecture at UNC Charlotte, to explore the critical connection between human health and building design. Liz shares her fascinating journey from practicing architecture to becoming a professor, delving into her research on sustainable design and climate-resistant architecture. They discuss her book, Inside Out: Human Health and the Air-Conditioning Era, which questions the modern disconnect between buildings and nature, and makes a case for designing healthier environments. Liz also highlights her innovative malaria-resistant housing project in Tanzania, her forward-thinking courses at UNC Charlotte, and her approach to creating dynamic spaces that enhance occupant well-being. This episode is packed with insights on the future of building design and its impact on human health. About Liz McCormick  Assistant Professor of Architecture at UNC Charlotte, Liz McCormick is a licensed architect, educator, and researcher whose work explores healthy, climatically sensitive, and contextually appropriate building design strategies that connect occupants to the outdoors while also reducing the dependence on mechanical conditioning technologies. She is currently working on her first book, Inside OUT (Routledge), which brings together a multi-disciplinary group of experts of the indoors, including scientists, anthropologists, engineers and architects, to discuss the future of human habitation with a dominant focus on human health in a post-pandemic world. Inside OUT will share a rich story of both the social and technological drivers of the conditioned indoors while making an argument for thoughtful interventions in the built environment. This book was inspired by the Inside l OUT Symposium that McCormick organized and moderated in Charlotte in March 2022.   McCormick is also a LEED Accredited Professional and a Certified Passive House Consultant. With more than 10 years of experience as a practicing architect, she has worked on a variety of project scales from single-family passive houses to LEED-certified commercial office buildings and campuses. In addition to teaching, McCormick is also pursuing a PhD in Design at North Carolina State University. The crossover and current pathways to combine environmental performance and human performance.  Fundamental values and roles that keep us alive and keep us caring for our families. “We really need to kind of go back to our roots. We really need to focus on our local communities. A lot of what we do is try to get buy-in for why it's so important to care for the environment, care about the climate crisis and all these. When you kind of have an introspective and look at the community around everyone, we have to focus on the commonalities. What do we have in common? And I think we all care about our families. We all care about the food that we eat, the air that we breathe, the water that we drink. I think when you look at those fundamental values you can then start caring about why the environment plays a big role in those key things that keep us alive and keep us caring for our families. So then we can focus on helping our local communities and get that buy-in from people that may have different opinions from ourselves.” Nick Kassanis   “We've been tackling a lot of these myths and misconceptions, sort of debunking a lot of these LEED myths over the last several years. A lot of people think LEED is design driven, or maybe it's too rigid or it's only a coastal thing. It only shows up in New York and San Francisco. LEED takes too much time. We've even debunked the one about how a lot of people think LEED is only about earning a point for bike racks. An old misconception that's been around a long time. I particularly like the misconception that LEED costs too much. There's a whole lot of emphasis on and studies over many years about the cost of green building and what premiums exist through LEED and through green building projects. And that misconception, that myth just doesn't hold any water anymore.” -Asa Posner     Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES   GBES is excited our membership community is growing. In this upbeat #Nomad Futurist podcast, Ron Vokoun, Director of Critical Facilities for OAC Services, shares his dynamic story with Phil and Nabeel, shedding light on the world of data center construction — from construction management to finding the right skilled trades people, building teams, being an owner's rep, and advocating for the customer. After an initial attempt at engineering studies and a stint as a laborer on a construction crew, Vokoun obtained a degree in construction management at the University of Nebraska. After graduation he worked in Oklahoma and Texas on water treatment plants. His next opportunities took him to LA where he worked on local fiber loops, and then to Denver to work for SP Telecom, a builder of telecom networks that morphed into Quest Communications. Vokoun was tasked with putting together a staffing plan for Quest. Lacking extensive resources, he reached out to department heads he knew from university and to friends and friends of friends to build a team of forty-seven people. Vokoun speaks with pride about the team, many of whose members became lifelong friends. “It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences…the energy of that group was amazing. It was just so much fun to see people figuring things out and building at warp speed…It's guided so much of what I've done ever since in terms of how to look for the right mindset and the right culture.” Vokoun stresses the importance of diversity in terms of fostering an inclusive approach to problem solving that leads to better outcomes and a stronger design. “We had such a diverse group in terms of age…back in the late nineties, 30% of our group was female…. 35% would be defined as minority. We were diverse before it was really a thing.” Diversity includes bringing in people from other industries to get unique points of view. “I love when we bring someone in that's never worked in a data center and they'll start by saying, ‘this is probably a dumb question' and I would say at least half of those dumb questions lead to Aha moments!” Vokoun is a strong believer that curiosity and a learning mindset are important personal attributes and that if you give people a chance, they will find a way to succeed. He discusses the serious challenge facing the critical infrastructure industry in terms of securing adequate human resources as the older generation retires. “The issues we have now are going to be compounded because we're going to need to build more data centers…the labor issue, and not just in management, but in terms of craft and construction workers.” Vokoun points out that the trades are more respected in some other parts of the world and stresses the importance of emphasizing the incredible opportunities for skilled tradespeople in the data center space. “If you have data center experience, you have probably five job offers in the next month if you want them.” Ron Vokoun is a 34-year veteran of the construction industry with a primary focus on Digital Infrastructure. As Director of Critical Facilities for OAC Services, Vokoun leads a team of construction professionals representing multiple clients in the build out of their data centers. He focuses on scalable, energy efficient, water conscious, and sustainable data center solutions with the lowest Total Cost of Ownership. He is also an author and blogger writing about the intersection of data centers and sustainability. Vokoun has successfully managed large projects and programs globally and has lived and worked in Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, California, Colorado, Japan, Washington, Arizona, Minnesota, and South Carolina. He has a B.S. in Construction Management from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. That’s exactly what Mycocycle is planning to do, and we’ve got their CEO, Joanne Rodriguez, on the show to talk about it. After a decades-long career in construction, Joanne founded Mycocycle and with her team has been training fungi to eat construction trash, especially asphalt, and plan to sell that service to municipalities and landfills. Buildings and their construction produce 39% of global CO2 emissions according to the UN Environment Program. With humanity’s population rising, cities are becoming denser as demand for new property continues to grow. Now more than ever, greater building efficiency is necessary to minimise their carbon footprint. Keeping heating costs low through good isolation, making sure electricity usage is kept to a minimum by increasing the natural light that comes through, and even designing with natural catastrophes like hurricanes in mind are all practices that are part of a sustainable approach to construction. Planning for the future, to ensure buildings last as long as possible, avoids unnecessary costs down the road. Today’s guest is an expert on these ideas! In this Episode of the Sustainability Matters Today Podcast, I speak with Mike Brown, “Energy Engineer”, host of the 3P Theory Podcast, and Champion of Sustainable and High Performance Buildings. As an Energy Analyst & Energy Systems Design Engineer with HKS, Mike works alongside architects and engineers to assist building owners and developers create high performance buildings that save energy and are healthy for the environment. An Engineer in Training, LEED Accredited Professional, and Building Energy Modeling Professional, Mike has been in the green building industry for over seven years collaborating on a variety of projects all over the U.S.. Utilizing building energy modeling and other innovative sustainability tools, he has been able to help building owners save an estimated $7.2M in energy costs and over $1.3 M in water costs on both LEED and non-LEED projects. The Green Building Matters Podcast with Charlie Cichetti

Scott Bowman is passionate about high performance buildings and helping design teams succeed. Recently, Scott retired as Principal and Corporate Sustainability Leader with KJWW after 25 years with the firm to develop a consultancy related to early project development, sustainability, high performance, and to help the practice of integrated design to become the norm for the built environment. He represents over 30 years of extensive experience in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design and overall project management. His specialties include direct digital controls, energy efficiency, sustainable design, LEED, and systems commissioning, but he has also developed significant skills in engaging and leading teams…helping them reach higher performance within constraints of time, site and budget. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and LEED Accredited Professional. Scott has worked extensively with alternate delivery methods such as integrated, design/build, collaborative, negotiated, and fast-track. Scott Bowman - Exposed to Sustainability Scott grew up in Mason City, Iowa and graduated from a community college there in Pre-engineering, went to Iowa State University and earned a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering.  Started with a firm in Des Moines and spent rest of his career in Iowa.  That first job was with a smaller foundational firm. Scott retired from KJWW; was their first branch office and he started to  expand that organization with approximately 550 engineers and an extensive sustainability portfolio. Aha Moment Scott was fascinated by passive solar and read the book Passive House which really sparked his interest.  His aha moment came in high school in drafting class where they were designing a solar home using passive and active solar.  The 70's was the first energy crisis he went through and he eventually started designing energy efficient buildings. "I learned a lot from the idea of how can we use the environment, how can we use our buildings to power themselves, their own conditioning." – Scott Bowman Mentors Scott mentions Frank Pulley as his first mentor.  Frank taught Scott that everything had to have a basis and make sense technically.  Scott had an internal drive for efficiency and reducing the impact on the environment. "I had some good professors that showed me the holistic view of energy in buildings and looking at the bigger picture instead of what we are contracted for and just what we are suppose to design to." – Scott Bowman Proudest Achievements Being part of growing a firm is one of Scott's proudest achievements. The number of engineers he was able to mentor in those years and working with many quality engineers are included in his career achievements. The Iowa Utility Board Office of Consumer Advocate building in Des Moines. It is still the most efficient building in Iowa. “That whole process is what really got me into integrated design and why I think it is such an important part of sustainability and green buildings .” – Scott Bowman Book Suggestions: Consulting-Specifying Engineer: “Integrating a High Performance Building” article with Carey Nagle ASHRAE Journal: “Sustainable Stewardship” article with Carey Nagle High Performance Building: “From Darkness to Light” article with Carey Nagle Passivhaus ASHRAE Journal Building Green, Nadiv Malin To hear more about Scott's journey, download and listen to the episode! Healthcare Interior Design 2.0

Join in this intimate conversation with Jane Rohde, Principal and Founder of JSR Associates Inc.——an architecture and interior design firm, specializing (and known for) senior living. Jane believes in a global cultural shift toward de-institutionalized senior living facilities through research, advocacy, and humanistic approaches to care. She and her team are committed to supportive design that recognizes elders’ individuality and results in thriving, joyful environments. It was hard to choose a favorite part of the interview because the entire conversation was magical. If I had to choose a favorite part, it was how Jane refers to her years in this field as a “covert operation”——asking senior living residents the right questions and then listening attentively to their answers, sneaking into management and operations meetings to uncover the biggest challenges and then working tirelessly to solve them.  In 2015, Jane received the first Changemaker Award for Environments for Aging from The Center for Health Design and in 2018, she received the ASID Design for Humanity Award. In October 2018, she was a Women in Design honoree awarded by Healthcare Design Magazine. Jane has been recognized as an Honorary Alumni of Clemson University for her teaching contribution to the Architecture + Health program. Jane is certified by the American College of Healthcare Architects, the American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers, and is a LEED Accredited Professional. She sits on various senior living, healthcare, and sustainability committees to support the creation of a tipping point for person-centered care environments like The Research Advisory Council which is the research arm of The Center for Health Design, the 2010 Cycle of the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities, and the ASHRAE 189.2 High Performance Healthcare Facilities Committee. Her specialties include: Senior living consulting, healthcare consulting, architecture and interior design for senior living and healthcare projects, focus groups, facilitations and development consulting. Learn more about Jane Rohde and JSR by visiting: http://www.jsrassociates.net/ Here’s what you’ll learn in the interview:  Germany’s fascinating medieval era community — The Fuggerei—one of the earliest known retirement communities where widowers and widows when to live, eat and wander through gardens when they were no longer able to work. How Jane opened her business because she saw a wide gap between operations, user needs, and design. She set out to close that gap by designing fully functioning spaces to better serve residents and staff. The story of Jane’s friend and senior living resident Miriam who influenced Jane to become a leader in making changes to the senior living environment, and the table Jane designed to help wheelchair bound Miriam have more dignity in social situations. * How the most rewarding aspects of this work are when you see a resident’s life changed for the good. The first step to take when you’re a new healthcare interior designer just starting out. Why education is now playing an increasingly important role in bringing more people to this field. How millennials are inspiring new senior living models. When senior residents look at themselves in the mirror, they see their vital self, not their current situation regardless of their physical, emotional or mental challenges.  Visit us at  www.healthcareidpodcast.com  or email us at  info@healthcareidpodcast.com Featured Product: Porcelanosa has always kept the environment in mind when manufacturing and developing new products – including reducing any emissions and waste created during manufacturing, and introducing the use of recycled materials within the production chain. Buffaloe holds a BS in Environmental Design and a MS in Environment & Behavior from the University of Missouri. She has been a LEED Accredited Professional since 2004 and is a huge fan of breakfast tacos. Barbara Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Climate Action and Adaptation Planning in a red state Maintaining personal sustainability while working on behalf of global sustainability Working collaboratively with other institutions throughout the community Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Barbara's Final Five Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? Taking time for yourself, making sure that you're thinking about what sort of priority areas that you want to focus on and sticking with them as part of a plan will help you maintain your sanity as well as show the impact of the work that you're doing without getting distracted with all the other squirrels and balls running around. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I am most excited about the local action efforts I see among communities. After the president pulled out of Paris Agreement, seeing all these communities, even without sustainability staff members, signing on and saying, "We're still in and we're still committed to making a difference." What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? There's actually a good book written by a couple of former sustainability directors called The Guide to Greening Cities, and if you're in sustainability in local government, it has a lot of really good projects and ideas that can help you establish and make impact in your community. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? I must sound like a broken record and I should be getting royalties on this, but USDN, the Urban Sustainability Directors Network is a wealth of knowledge besides just the peer learning among your peers and other communities, but also their innovation projects have a lot of best practices that you can implement in your own community Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work you're leading at Columbia? You can google my name because there's not a lot of Barbara Buffaloe's out there. And our city website is Como.gov/sustainability or else you can find me at Twitter @BarbaraBuffaloe.

This podcast features two key members of the ANSI/ASHRAE/IES 90.1 Lighting Subcommittee that establishes lighting power density levels for this foundational standard.  The discussion reveals and explains to our lighting community a new project that is funded by ASHRAE, IALD, BC Hydro and the IES.  Project tasks will support the work of the 90.1 standard by providing AGI32 modeling runs by application.  These models will improve the accuracy of and strengthen the effectiveness of this and the other standards affected by 90.1.  It is a concern especially because LED luminaires are now being used as the primary baseline to establish LPD’s instead of traditional sources.  This has resulted in significant energy savings but there is an end game.  The partners want to verify that the quality of lighting is not impacted in future versions of 90.1 and the other standards that reference it. Michael Myer has been with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for 11 years. Prior to coming to PNNL Michael was a practicing lighting designer with Naomi Miller Lighting Design and before that Hayden McKay Lighting Design. Michael’s work at PNNL includes energy codes and appliance standards as well as market transformation related to parking and interior lighting. Michael has been an active member of the IES and is current co-chair working on the revised version of DG-18, a member of the Energy Management Committee, and has participated in a task group related to parking lighting. Marty Salzberg worked as an architectural lighting consultant for more than thirty years. Her work was honored with multiple industry awards for design and energy efficiency. As a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society, Marty has been a member of the Library Lighting Committee since 2003 and is currently the committee Chair. Marty is a Professional Member of the IALD, where she contributes to the work of the Energy & Sustainability Committee by serving as the IALD representative to the ASHRAE/IES 90.1 energy standard development committee. She recently served on the IALD committee to edit the Guidelines for Specification Integrity, teaches about the NYC Energy Code at BEEx and is teaching lighting design at the New York School of Interior Design. Kelly Seeger is Technical Policy Manager for Signify where she leads building codes and standards activities for North America, advising company business groups, market teams, and researchers on implications for products and systems from pre-development through installation. She serves as Lighting Subcommittee Chair of ASHRAE SSPC 90.1 and is also active in the development of CA T24 and IECC and is involved with key organizations relevant to building efficiency, green building standards & codes, energy rating and benchmarking, and smart buildings. Kelly has worked in lighting and energy efficiency in the U.S. for nearly twenty years; her experience includes lighting design and application, strategic planning, a voice of customer and market analysis, presentation and training, and energy efficiency & transformative market consulting. She holds M.S. Lighting and B.S. Building Sciences degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. She is Lighting Certified by the NCQLP, a LEED Accredited Professional, and is Past President of the New York City Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society.

My guest is author and leading green architect, David Bergman. An architect, ecodesigner and LEED Accredited Professional with more than 25 years of experience, Bergman has recently completed his first book, Sustainable Design: A Critical Guide, to rave reviews. Written for students and professionals as well as anyone looking to get an overall understanding of the general concepts of sustainable design, this book presents a concise and well-illustrated text of not just actionable advice for design implementation, but also a discourse on the discipline's ethical responsibility in the field. Each chapter takes on specific considerations such as rainwater harvesting, gray-water recycling, passive heating techniques, green roofs, wind energy, day-lighting, indoor air quality, material evaluation, and green building certification programs. During this show, David will discuss how we can come out the other side of our concurrent ECOlogical and ECOnomic crises in a better place than we started.
