What does it take to revolutionize the dining experience for a generation that holds $7.6 trillion in annual spending power? As America's largest contingent of Baby Boomers approaches retirement, the demand for elevated dining in senior living communities has never been higher. In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I'm joined by Joseph Cuticelli, CEO of Restaura, a company poised to disrupt the $45.1 billion foodservice contracting industry. Restaura is not just changing what's on the menu—it's redefining how technology, data science, and hospitality converge to create personalized dining experiences that cater to the evolving expectations of the Longevity Economy. During our conversation, Joseph shares how Restaura is setting new industry standards by leveraging artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and real-time data to gather resident feedback, optimize operations, and reduce food waste. With dining costs representing up to 20% of a senior living community's operating expenses, Restaura's tech-driven insights provide clients with smart dashboards offering real-time KPIs and sentiment analysis, ensuring that resident satisfaction and operational efficiency go hand in hand. But how does one balance cutting-edge technology with the compassionate care and culinary artistry that residents expect? Joseph explains how Restaura brings together nutrition science and personalized service to address not only the health but also the emotional well-being of residents. We also explore the growing need for tech-enabled responsiveness in senior living, where dining quality is key to attracting and retaining residents. As the conversation unfolds, we discuss the broader impact of the Longevity Economy and how senior living communities can stay ahead by blending technology with human connection. Is the future of senior dining about more than just food? Could AI and data science pave the way for a more sustainable, personalized approach to care? Tune in and join the discussion. How do you see technology transforming the way we approach aging and hospitality? Share your thoughts—this is a conversation worth continuing.

What she discovered is, that issues on the surface are masking deeper problems of communication with family systems in a senior's transition of care from home to senior living. Unmet needs and expectations, combined with a lack of information creates the perfect storm. She presents a case study that sounds very familiar and represents so many of our families. Rebecca, determined to provide solutions, created the Guide Path Certification Program for Senior Living Communities to help educate and support teams and families in order to prevent things from escalating to the point of a lawsuit. With aging comes many difficult decisions. One of those is determining the best living situation for your later years, specifically, choosing a senior living community. In fact, the US Department of Health and Human Services estimates that the number of adults 65 and older who will need to move into senior living communities is expected to reach 27 million by 2050. That's a lot of people! While many options are available, ranging from independent living and assisted living to memory care and boarding, it's easy to become overwhelmed. So, whether you're looking for opportunities for a loved one or are interested in your future, this podcast will provide clarity and deep insights. Join us as we sit down with Bryan Riddle, Owner of Care Placement Advisors, to discuss senior communities, resources, guidance, and more. Bryan has over 20 years of experience as a care placement specialist, making him the perfect person to answer all our questions. He and his team work hard to find the best options for each family's unique situation while working to educate, empower, and go the extra mile to meet a loved one's preferences, needs, and goals. “Sometimes the children want to push mom or dad into a community because they feel guilty. They're worried and wonder - ‘Is mom okay?' ‘Is she taking her medications?' I love how much the children love mom or dad. However, if placement is to work, we want mom or dad to have buy-in. They must have some say in the process.” In this episode of A Place of Possibility, we'll be discussing: The variety of senior living options available for older adults and how to determine the right choice for your needs. We'll do a brief overview of pricing, but it's hard to pinpoint because costs do vary. The little-known fact that Medi-Cal doesn't cover costs associated with a senior living community. Why you should consider working with a care placement specialist. An in-depth look into the process of working with a care placement specialist. And more. The decision to transition a loved one to a senior community isn't easy and, as Bryan points out, often comes after a crisis, such as a sudden fall. It can be a scary and stressful time for the whole family. However, it's not something that has to be faced alone and should be thought about outside of crises, too. Join us as we travel this journey of senior living possibilities together, uncovering new insights, opportunities, resources, and more!

In this week's episode we are going to talk about how to find the right retirement home in Maine. Downsizing and moving into a retirement home can be a difficult and emotional process, but with proper planning and organization, it can also be a positive experience. Here are some tips to help make the transition as smooth as possible. When it comes to finding the right retirement home, it's important to take the time to research and visit different options. Here are some steps to take to ensure you find the perfect place for your retirement:1.Determine your needs and wants. Before you start looking for a retirement home, make a list of what you need and want in a living situation. Consider the cost. Retirement homes can vary greatly in cost, so it's important to consider your budget and compare costs before making a decision. Consider things like location, amenities, and services offered. when touring, look at cleanliness, friendliness, and trust yourself. 2.Research different options. Look into different types of retirement homes, such as independent living communities, assisted living facilities, and continuing care retirement communities. Research the pros and cons of each option to help you make a decision.3.Visit potential homes. Once you've narrowed down your list of options, schedule tours of the homes that interest you. Take note of the overall atmosphere, the cleanliness of the facility, and the friendliness of the staff.4.Focus on the positives, better quality of life – leaving behind the yardwork, home maintenance, cooking, and cleaning. Adventure is waiting, you just need to take the first step.5.Get organized and pack with a purpose: Once you've sorted through your belongings, it's important to get organized before you move. Pack your items carefully, label boxes, and make sure you have a plan for where everything will go in your new home. Sort through your belongings: Go through your belongings room by room and decide what to keep, what to sell, and what to give away. Consider hiring a professional organizer to help with this process.6.Plan your move. Start planning the logistics of your move, such as hiring movers, packing, and arranging for transportation of your belongings.7.Start planning early: Don't wait until the last minute to start thinking about downsizing. Give yourself plenty of time to sort through your belongings and make decisions about what to keep and what to get rid of. Donate or sell items you no longer need: Instead of throwing away items you no longer need, consider donating them to a local charity or selling them at a garage sale or online. This will help you declutter your home and also give back to your community.8.Get support: Downsizing and moving can be a lot to handle, so don't be afraid to ask for help. Consider hiring a moving company, or ask family and friends to assist with the process.9.Schedule a move-in date. Once you've chosen a retirement home, schedule a move-in date with the facility.10. Are all senior living communities nursing homes? No, there are many senior living options beyond just nursing homes."All senior living communities are nursing homes" is a common myth. Perhaps you've spoken to your loved one about senior living, and they shut it down, saying, “I can't go to a nursing home!” You may have the mental image of depressing facilities from the 1970s with low ceilings and few windows. Thankfully, we've come a long way since then!Senior living is an umbrella term for many types of senior communities. There's senior apartments, which offer community activities and recreation. There's independent living, which offers 3 meals a day and is nothing like the stereotypical nursing home. In fact, it's more like a cruise ship on land. There's assisted living, which provides your own apartment plus additional help if you need it. Then of course there's memory care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia. Residential care homes are another type of senior living offered in a normal home in a neighborhood and can accommodate a variety of needs. So what are nursing homes? Nursing homes actually have 2 different sides: short-term care and long-term care.Long-term care might seem more like the nursing home you have in mind. However, the other wing is for people who need rehabilitation from something like a surgery or illness. So nursing homes aren't always a life sentence!Ultimately, knowledge is power. Hopefully, with the right senior living knowledge, you'll understand the best placement for you or your loved one and can feel at ease about the decision you make.Topics discussed:- Nursing homes- Senior living myths- Types of senior living- Assisted living- Memory care- Independent living- Senior apartments- Short-term vs. long-term careTakeaways from this episode:- People may envision nursing homes when they hear about senior living. However, senior living is an umbrella term for many types of communities for those with different needs.-Different options cater to different needs and include senior apartments, independent living, assisted living, memory care, and residential care homes.-A nursing home may not be required if for example you simply need assistance with bathing.. You can always go to assisted living or even an independent care home and have a caregiver come in just for that purpose.-The short-term care side of the nursing home is covered by Medicare or health insurance. For long-term care, many nursing homes take Medicaid.Resources mentioned in this episode:Senior Living explained:https://www.loriwilliams-seniorservices.com/aging-in-style-podcast/episode/2dd082bc/053-replay-senior-housing-101True or false: Pets are not allowed in senior living communitieshttps://www.loriwilliams-seniorservices.com/aging-in-style-podcast/episode/2d503110/109-true-or-false-pets-are-not-allowed-in-senior-living-communitiesTo suggest a topic, be a guest or to support the podcast, please email Lori@Loriwilliams-seniorservices.com For more senior resources and to sign up to the newsletter, please visit:

Tips from Trestle: The Senior Living Food & Hospitality Podcast
Senior living food service is a unique operation. It's not exactly a restaurant or country club, but it's also not healthcare. It is a delicate blend of managing both while balancing the vision of full-service hospitality in the homes of our residents. And as dedicated professionals in this immense sector, we know that our professional networks are invaluable to our growth, development, and even our sanity. But when you are a dining & hospitality professional in senior living, your options seem limited. What should you do? That where the Senior Dining Association comes in to fill this void. Started in 2018 by founder & CEO Harris Ader, the Senior Dining Association was started to provide foodservice professionals something much needed for our industry - a place where we could come together with other professionals that specialize in senior living. Ien this episode of TFT, Aaron talks with Harris about the origins of the SDA, how it evolved and grew throughout the pandemic, and what he has on the horizon for senior living food service professionals heading into 2023. Harris Ader has more than 20 years of operational experience in the senior living industry. His extensive background also includes experience in contract foodservice management, the national school lunch program, hotels and restaurants. Prior to founding the Senior Dining Association, Harris was the Vice President of Dining Service at Senior Living Communities, based in Charlotte, NC. What's it like working as a hairdresser at a senior living community? Margo Brooks would tell you it's been the best 9 years of her life, full of nonstop laughs, fun and fulfillment. Not only does she cut and style hair for senior men and women, but she uses her beauty school training for grooming and applying makeup to help seniors feel their best. Margo tells Seniors Living Expert Lori Williams how she started working at the onsite senior living salon and the joys of the job. She'll also discuss the seniors that inspire her and how (in the words of one of her clients) feeling good is “better than medicine.” Topics discussed:- Life at senior living and memory care communities- Cutting hair for memory care patients- Caring for loved ones with dementia- Beauty and grooming for seniors- Hairstyling and makeup for funerals Takeaways from this episode:- Hair appointments give seniors something to look forward to if they're lonely or in need of self-care. They often share information with hairdressers they wouldn't tell anyone else.- Seniors feel better if they look better. It's been said, “When I come in here, it's better than medicine.”- Seniors with memory issues often love getting their hair done just as much as anybody else, but one important tip is to take a slower approach, be patient with them, and explain what you're doing each step of the way.- One service some hairdressers perform is styling hair or applying makeup for the funeral of the deceased. This is a gift to family and to honor their loved one by ensuring they look like they did in life. Tips from Trestle: The Senior Living Food & Hospitality Podcast
Cultivating and educating the next generation of the hospitality workforce about the benefits and unique opportunities in senior living is something that I truly enjoy and embrace as a responsibility. We have to show the next generation of hospitality leaders that they can and should find their calling in the senior living industry - the only place where they can truly provide #HospitalityWithAPurpose. That's why this episode of Tips from Trestle is so important. It's the recording of the dining & hospitality panel that I recently put together the White Lodging-J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Purdue University. I was joined on the panel by a couple of the best in the business: Matthew J. Perez of MBK Senior Living & Charles Andrew Moret from Oakmont Senior Living. We shared our senior living "origin stories", what are focsu and passions are for the industry, where we want to push the industry, and answered a few questions from the students. TFT also sends a big thank you to Karen Byrd for inviting me to lead the discussion for their Management of Senior Living Communities class - one of many of it's kind that we are beginning to see across college campuses as the industry sees the need for these leaders in our ranks. #seniorliving #hospitality #foodandbeverage #thoughtleaders #education Tips From Trestle is a podcast focused on discussion about senior living food & hospitality. You may believe that you can't bring pets to senior living – and you wouldn't be alone in that assumption – but fortunately that's not always the case! Cats as well as small dogs between 20-25 pounds are often allowed in senior living. If you're unsure whether the community will allow you to bring your pet, it's important to first understand the different types of senior living. There's independent living for those age 55 and over, assisted living for those who need more assistance, memory care communities, residential care homes, and nursing homes. Pets typically aren't allowed in nursing homes, care homes or memory cares. However, senior apartments, independent living, and assisted living usually allow animals, although with certain breed and size restrictions. It's important to learn the rules for your specific community. Pets are an important page of life for many older adults. They provide companionship, love, and even purpose for the seniors that care for them. These are just a few of the reasons why many senior living communities are in support of dogs and cats coming to senior living. Don't let concern about pets prevent you from making a good decision for yourself, and be sure to do your research so you can find a great living situation for you and your furry friend to stay together. Topics discussed: Senior living communities Bringing pets to senior living Dogs and cats Nursing homes and memory care Assisted living Senior apartments and pets Senior living fact vs myth Takeaways from this episode: - Pets are often allowed in senior living, but there may be size / breed restrictions. - Dogs are allowed, but on average they need to be smaller – around 20-25 pounds. - Communities may “interview” the pet to make sure it's a good fit. For instance, larger dogs may be allowed if they have a calm temperament and don't jump. - Senior apartments, independent living, and assisted living are often the communities that allow pets. - Some senior living communities may have a little yard attached if you're in a first-floor apartment. A professional salon has become a must-have amenity for senior living communities from active living through skilled nursing and memory care. However, many properties miss the boat with poorly designed facilities and unlicensed contractors. Learn how PS Salon & Spa has become the market leader in salon and spa services with more than 1,000 locations in 37 states. About John John Polatz is the CEO and Co-Founder of PS Salon & Spa, the leading national senior community salon and spa provider. As a values-based organization with over 1,000 professional locations in 37 states, PS takes great pride in cultivating a strong culture in support of its 1,500+ team members. Prior to PS, as the Chief Financial Officer of two multi-national and publicly traded companies, John was a leader in the development of financial, administrative and technology support solutions for global businesses with multiple locations, currencies, and lines of operation. John has lived and worked in many cities throughout the U.S. and abroad in Italy, Switzerland, and New Zealand. Key Takeaways There is no standardization within salon operators in senior living communities, and many facilities are not licensed with the State Board of Cosmetology. Communities need a structure appropriate for their populations. Adoption of virtual communication is at an all-time high. Pre Covid, only 20% families in PS Salon partner communities communicated through technology, now it is more like 90-100%. When adult children are more invested in the relationships with residents, everybody wins. The Senior Living can do a better job bringing a consumer-friendly message to the masses that living in these communities is a fun, engaging, and enriching experience. A 1-2% increase in resident population would lead to an estimated 100% occupancy of existing inventory of senior living communities.
