NOTE: Todd has left JLL since recording this episode. In this episode, Doug sits down with Todd Edstrom—formerly of JLL. Todd provides insights into why technology is transforming the commercial real estate (CRE) industry—an industry that has been slow to leverage technology. The industry is "curious but skeptical" excited to try new things, but slow to shake the industry. So, what technology is beneficial to the commercial real estate industry? A major theme is the importance of data. How can data be used to inform better decision-making? While data sets such as survey's and utilization/badge data are necessary, Todd argues that productivity data is most important right now to understand exactly how spaces are being used. There's even new technology emerging that uses sensors to capture data and give researchers insight into how a spaces are actually used.Looking into the future, Todd is encouraged by technologies like virtual construction site scans to automatically track progress and tools that use AI to instantly generate 3D space plans from PDFs. It's important to note that these technologies shouldn't replace human relationships and expertise in CRE deals, but should compliment them.Follow Todd Edstrom on LinkedIn.Follow Doug on LinkedIn.Click here to get your copy of Doug's children's book—Design Your World.Follow Imagine a Place on LinkedIn.

One of our listeners asked us a few questions on this issue and said “I don't think you can name names when it comes to appliances, but I'm wondering if you could touch on general considerations like how do I know what size range to buy?” We discuss different brands and answer another question about kitchen sink size and what to buy. We had a lot of fun with this one, so we hope you guys listen and enjoy! What range to buy 1:25The Cafe Stove from GE 10:15Buying a kitchen sink 12:40Counter depth or standard refrigerators? 15:00Splurging on an appliance like an ice maker, steam oven, or in-wall coffee machine 18:20Microwave placement and matching 23:40Hood size vs range size 30:00“I think you know when you're in a home, I'm in a small kitchen, I call it my camper kitchen because we haven't done anything to this house, because I wanna tear it down and I wanna build my dream kitchen, so right now I have a small kitchen, so anything larger than a 30” range wouldn't make sense in my kitchen. It wouldn't fit, so if you know you're a small kitchen, you know you're gonna be a 30 inch range, 36 range, probably not a 48 inch. If you're getting to a moderate sized kitchen, you can tease with 48 inches.” 1:43https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/https://alicelanehome.com/https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHomehttps://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecityNews Letter: https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5

Even if you haven't started building your house yet, you should start thinking about your furniture layout.  Furniture placement is important because it will dictate how good a room looks, how well it functions, and how easily you can move in and through the space.   If your rooms have beautiful furniture pieces, but they're arranged awkwardly, it will take away from the overall stylishness and functionality of your home.    Developing a good furniture layout early on will help you come up with a more accurate electrical plan where you can specify where electrical outlets for lamps, TVs, and other electronics—  an electrical plan that makes the most sense as it relates to the furniture that will be in the room.  So let's discuss some furniture placement/layout rules of thumb that you should consider way before you buy your furniture.  Show notes at BYHYU.com

In this episode we define and describe. space planning and give some examples of how to arrange your space to inspire conversation. Space planning is a critical part of the design process and we find that often architects don’t create the right amount of space for your furniture because they use generalized sizes, not specific to your furniture selections. You’ll want to work with the architects and figure out how much space you'll actually need for your style so that your home can tell your personal story. We talk about how to situate your room depending on what you want your focus to be. A reoccurring piece of advice is to not let your room get to “leggy,” otherwise everything looks too tall and like it’s about to tip over. To be successful, make sure you are considering the different vantage points in the room and how you want to build the social interactions in the space.https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5 What is space planning? 1:54 Fireplace and rugs 8:04Chairs 11:26Space planning for a room with a corner fireplace 19:13How important are sectionals 24:57Indoor trees 29:50“I just wanted to give you guys the permission to not have to have every single thing in a room be comfortable. It doesn’t have to be. There are certain pieces in a room, and this one is probably not the perfect space plan to talk about that, but sometimes you have a little chair by a fireplace and that chair’s job is to be sculptural and beautiful and just fun to look at. Maybe on occasions somebody’s going to go perch there because they’re completing the conversation circle, but it’s really just a perch and its silhouette is just doing its job. Not everything has to sit like a lazy boy. Not everything has to sit like a sectional.” 14:53https://www.instagram.com/alicelaneinteriors/https://www.instagram.com/alicelanehome/https://alicelanehome.com/https://www.facebook.com/AliceLaneHomehttps://www.pinterest.com/alicelanehome/https://www.youtube.com/alicelanehomecollectionsaltlakecityNews Letter:https://manage.kmail-lists.com/subscriptions/subscribe?a=HZENWY&g=PFcqV5

I am hoping we will not be forced to stay safe at home again, but I want us to be prepared. As women, we often feel like when people come into our homes that we are being judged and graded. Most women I have spoken with have felt this way at some point in their lives. We take pride in having a clean and hospitable home, but we are often short in time and money to make that a reality. I want to help you make some mindset shifts for living in this pandemic. Walk through your house with index cards or a note pad. Stop in each zone and make notes about what worked and what did not. I share with you some of the thinking I did about my own house and family.  Walk through your house with index cards or a note pad. Stop in each zone and make notes about what worked and what did not. I share with you some of the thinking I did about my own house and family. For example, everyone in the home needs a place to work, alone space, passion projects, and adequate technology. I also share some changes you can consider making to the spaces in your home. You can make new rules. You can change how you are using your spaces. I'd love to hear from you in our Facebook community if you are using spaces in new or unusual ways.  Mentioned in the podcast: Kids Program & Planner Getting Ready for the New School Year Blitz

Bill Beekman, Michigan State University vice president and director of athletics, welcomes Barb Kranz to MSU Today. Kranz is the director of Facilities Planning and Space Management at MSU and a person who many people at outside the university may not be familiar with. “But I can assure you that everybody inside the university knows Barb's name because she's the point person on all issues related to space, and space is a very critical issue at a university,” Beekman says. Facilities Planning & Space Management is responsible for Capital and Space Planning and Space Administration for the university, aligning space and physical resources with strategic vision to support MSU's core mission of teaching/learning, research, and outreach. “People need places to work, says Kranz. “We need to make sure we have classrooms for our students and other instructional spaces. We collaborate with Residential and Hospitality Services and Athletics. We look for ways to coordinate and leverage our space, financial and human resources. As we bring people together with our facility resources, we have policies, protocols, and procedures that we develop to help ensure our space resources are used the best they can be.” Kranz talks about the depth and breadth of research MSU faculty are involved in and what goes into finding faculty appropriate research space. She describes the new STEM building under construction on campus, too. Kranz has quite possibly set foot in every room on campus during her career and says her favorite locations are the lobbies at the Auditorium Building, both on the main auditorium side and on the Fairchild Theater side. “The North Kedzie lobby is also very beautiful as well. I would say those are three of my favorite spots of all of our spaces on campus.”MSU Today airs every Sunday morning at 9:00 on 105.1 FM, AM 870, and your smart speaker.
