Join Murray Robinson and Shane Gibson in a conversation with Jason Yip about Spotify. The Spotify approach works for Spotify, but it might not work for you. Develop your product strategy first, and then design your organisation to support it using team topologies. To succeed, you need unity of purpose, trust in people and playful growth. When you have alignment, you can give people autonomy and trust them to do the right thing. Design your architecture to enable autonomous teams. Define golden paths for teams and encourage them to experiment. Play drives innovation and growth.  Don't outsource your strategic capabilities. Today's Podcast is with Jason Yip, community Director at MWYO a Think and do tank in Hong Kong. Previously he was Regional Head of Market at the government affairs and donor relations division of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). During his time at the ICRC, Jason has worked at the Geneva headquarters to develop dialogue and mobilize resources with member states in accordance with the Geneva Convention, and has been stationed in Palestine, Afghanistan and Myanmar as an ICRC Delegate. Jason has been responsible for developing and implementing ICRC’s humanitarian initiatives in the battlefield and engaged in emergency relief. Born and raised in Hong Kong, he began his career as an analyst at Goldman Sachs, and speaks fluent English, Mandarin, French, Japanese and Cantonese. In 2018, Jason was awarded a Medal of Honour by the Hong Kong SAR Government and selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons by JCI HK. Like many youngsters in Hong Kong, Jason Yip grew up in public housing estates more interested in hanging out with friends than studying. With a late burst of effort from Form Six onwards, he was accepted by HKU, and upon graduation landed a job with an investment bank in New York providing financial security and achieving the “Hong Kong dream” of property ownership. However, four years later he made a life-changing decision that parents and friends thought insane. He changed career, moving into humanitarian aid. Jason Yip is the one of the very first Hong Kongers at the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross to be hired as an on-the-ground delegate and has been dispatched to conflict zones including Palestine, Afghanistan, Jordan, Syria and Myanmar. There he upholds the ICRC mission - protecting civilians during fighting, helping locate those separated from families, and assisting in rebuilding a post-war infrastructure. Jason has been involved in numerous life-threatening scenarios including negotiating with the Taliban in Afghanistan for the release of 33 kidnapped schoolchildren and their teachers and delivering letters from prisoners in the mountains of Myanmar to their families. Join Jason Yip on how he went from being a lackadaisical, fun-loving kid to an adult filled with unswerving belief in the value of humanitarian work in a world full of tension, and why Hong Kongers should get more involved in international organizations.

Alexis Hiniker and Jason Yip research the relationships people have with technology, and they have a program where they work alongside children to come up with new designs. They noticed that the kids described lot of technology as "creepy." But what exactly does "creepy" mean? Hiniker and Yip interviewed them about it, and found fascinating answers about what makes kids uncertain or concerned about artificial intelligence and smart home devices. As this technology becomes more deeply integrated into all of our lives and also increasingly complex, how do we make sure it's not, well ... creepy? Hiniker and Yip are both assistant professors at The University of Washington's Information School.

In this podcast Shane Hastie, Lead Editor for Culture & Methods, spoke to Jason Yip about removing friction in the developer experience and DevOps at Spotify Why listen to this podcast: • Friction is the feeling that your environment is fighting you – examples include poorly named variables in code, editors configured incorrectly, access to environments etc • These things often seem small individually, but together they significantly and slow down development activities • Cultivate refined annoyance; not tolerating these issues but actively resolving them • Challenges often come mainly from rapid growth – every design will fail if you just try to scale it larger and larger, you need to redesign for larger contexts, what worked yesterday may not work tomorrow and needs to be adapted • Be careful not to locally optimize one part of the system at the expense of the overall throughput More on this: Quick scan our curated show notes on InfoQ http://bit.ly/2hVBH9A You can also subscribe to the InfoQ newsletter to receive weekly updates on the hottest topics from professional software development. bit.ly/24x3IVq Subscribe: www.youtube.com/infoq Like InfoQ on Facebook: bit.ly/2jmlyG8 Follow on Twitter: twitter.com/InfoQ Follow on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/infoq

Welcome to the Software Process and Measurement Cast 204!   Software Process and Measurement Cast 204 features my interview with Jason Yip.  We visited the edges of lean and agile ideas.  During the visit we explored how we can all push our knowledge of how work is done! Jason Yip first encountered Extreme Programming in 1999 through discussions on comp.object, comp.software-engineering and Ward's wiki, http://c2.com.  He's been with ThoughtWorks since early 2001, experiencing engagements in operations, setting up builds and continuous integration, custom application development, Agile coaching, process improvement, and is currently a Principal Consultant focusing on organisation-level application of Agile, Lean, and Kanban. The best way to understand Jason's thoughts is to check out his blog (http://jchyip.blogspot.com), follow his Twitter feed (@jchyip), and browse his Slideshare presentations (http://www.slideshare.net/jchyip) The SPaMCAST 204 is sponsored by LeanKit Kanban.  By now, most of you in the Lean-Agile community have heard of LeanKit, recognized by community leaders and practitioners alike as the most flexible and powerful tool available for implementing visual management. Since their launch in 2009, LeanKit has helped hundreds of companies around the world to quickly and easily model even very complex processes as vertical and horizontal lanes on a virtual whiteboard with cards representing work flowing from step to step.  LeanKit has recently the launched groundbreaking new features that allow even the largest enterprise portfolio and projects to be managed using multiple levels of drill-down Kanban boards, detailed sub-taskboards, and roll-up Lean metrics - as well as a complete overhaul of their user interface that makes LeanKit more attractive, more intuitive, and easier to manage.
