The Hong Kong History Podcast

It must be obvious from what we've looked at so far that because of its importance to sea trade – then as now ninety per cent and more of international flows of goods – and to the economies of Britain's empire, coal stores mattered. It is easy to see why. Until the early twentieth century, and not always even then, no ship could carry enough coal to fuel it from its starting point to wherever it was bound and then back home again. Until perhaps 1900, any ship – merchantman or warship – would need to take on coal three or four times on its way from Europe to Hong Kong and as many times on the way back. Having access to, but much more important firm control over, what were called coaling stations – fuel stops – really mattered. Hong Kong, it soon turned out, was the British Empire's most important coaling station – called a First Class Coaling Station – in East Asia. The important point is that no other Western power at the time had any equivalent until the late 1890s, and that's ignoring two other things. The British merchant fleet was half or more of all ships afloat so it tended to carry disproportionate amounts of everyone else's cargoes, coal included. Second, because Britain was the world's largest producer of coal until the late 19th century a lot of other nation's coal at ‘their' coaling stations – there were lots all over the world with 50% or so not British controlled – tended to come from British coalfields. Given frequent 19th century big power rivalry as western empires aggressively expanded, stopping others grabbing ‘your' coal mattered. That's why, from the 1880s through to the early 1900s, as worries about imperial rivalries in the China Seas escalated, Hong Kong suddenly started acquiring all those huge gun batteries you can see on Mount Davis, at Pinewood Battery above HKU, at Lei Yue Mun, at Stonecutters Island, on Devil's Peak and so on. Their function was to prevent any foreign naval power from stomping into Hong Kong and taking control of its coal and coaling facilities.

Rouwdouwers gaat over zinken of zwemmen, buigen of barsten.

Ep #58 with Huy Nguyen TrieuHuy Nguyen Trieu is the author of the new book The AI-fication of Jobs. He is the co-founder along with Ms. Tram Anh Nguyen of the London-headquartered Centre for Finance, Technology and Entrepreneurship (or CFTE). As a global FinTech knowledge platform, CFTE opened its Abu Dhabi office earlier this year, in addition to its Singapore office.  A leading voice in the world of AI, Huy's book is the product of 10 months of effort and debuted at the recent Singapore FinTech Festival in early-November 2024. It explores how AI is reshaping the workforce. It moves beyond the common question of “Will AI take my job?” Huy shares with Regulatory Ramblings host Ajay Shamdasani how his book provides a structured framework for understanding AI's impact from displacement to augmentation and how such changes and trends can be leveraged for future success and insights. It is an accessible, future-focused guide and a must-read for anyone interested in AI's role in shaping careers, industries, and society. As Huy puts it: “AI is a complex, personal topic – 85 percent of workers believe it will significantly impact their jobs. But understanding what that means is often confusing.” Huy goes on to describe his professional background, being an engineer by training and an entrepreneur by nature. As a "big picture" person, he's interested in the revolution in technology that is transforming finance – what he calls Disruptive Finance. His passion, he says, is for building and growing businesses – especially in changing environments. It led him from being a tech CEO in New York to being managing director at an investment bank in London to being a founding partner at a Hong Kong-based accelerator in Hong Kong and now, as co-founder of the CFTE.  Having previously, been a managing director at Citi, Huy grew a business that helped Europe's largest insurance companies, major pension funds and international banks to adapt to an increasingly complex environment. He also adores teaching at scale, having co-created some of the largest FinTech courses in the world at Oxford University's Said Business School, the University of Hong Kong University, Imperial College and now CFTE.  As CEO of The Disruptive Group, he's developing a firm that builds innovative finance businesses which leverage technology and advises CEOs of large organizations. One of TDG's projects is the CFTE – and it is one that is dear to Huy's heart, as he explains the impetus for the body's creation.  “CFTE is the answer to a very simple question: as a professional in financial services, how do I acquire the skills to be future-proof?” Huy says. “We have created a platform that helps the industry acquire this knowledge quickly, from FinTech to artificial intelligence to open banking,” he concluded. A key observation of the book is that AI and its massive impact on careers portends a shift that will give rise to a class of “supercharged professionals” – those who combine their skills with tech to thrive like never before. And then there are the “creative disruptors”; a select few poised to build entirely new industries from scratch. Huy urges us all to embrace this future, not just for ourselves, but to ensure the potential benefits of AI for everyone.

Regulatory Ramblings
Generation Z has little say in the financial infrastructure that will govern future generations

Regulatory Ramblings

At the heart of Dr. Bryane Michael's conversation with Regulatory Ramblings host Ajay Shamdasani is whether FinTech can help solve the social, financial, and economic problems previous generations like the Baby Boomers contributed to. They discuss whether Gen-Z's potentially decentralized world of finance will look radically different from ours. Gen-Zers and now Gen Alpha will grow up in a world designed and run almost exclusively by baby boomers. The DBS power outage was supposedly partly caused by a 'missing generation' unable to take charge during the crisis. Why have huge, octogenarian, organizational men-created lumbering bureaucracies that FinTech has been having problems shaping? Economists have struggled to understand why organizations exist for almost a century. Massive central banks, financial supervisors, regulators and now new stability boards pile on to gigantic financial services firms like Blackrock, Visa, and Allianz. Most of us distrust them. Scale has financial benefits even outside the financial sector – as Google and YouTube show. And there are no signs to show this trend abating. Pay apps on our mobile phones must still go through the same old architectures – using the same old rules. When you turn on MetaMask and use Ethereum, you get a whole different feeling of the Internet. Thousands of decentralized autonomous organizations, or DAOs, are creating tokens that can be almost anything you want them to be. Bryane shares an alternative view of finance and the economy in a decentralized finance (DeFi) world. All too often, we only hear the conservative viewpoints about FinTech. Yet, the law and economics of DeFi could look very different from what's currently envisaged. The discussion centers around the, broadly speaking, two schools of thought on FinTech regulation – namely, the conservative (IMF/BIS) perspective versus the Web3/evangelistic viewpoints. This conversation also covers whether DeFi can solve the “public goods” (missing regulators) problem and create trustless local financial markets, as well as what will FinTech and RegTech mean for traditional property rights and the implications of computer code as law. The two also discuss who the winners of the brave new world of FinTech in the mid-21st century will be and what it might mean for Generation Z/the Zoomers. Bryane stresses that there is a better way to implement FinTech than to just computerize legacy financial institutions. However, he also shares his concerns about young people's lack of say in shaping the financial architecture that will govern their generation “because the current approach simply shoves existing law onto digital markets instead of creating digitally native finance.” The chat concludes with a discussion about what four decades of debate have meant for cross-border payments as the issue remains a challenge in much of the world. About the Guest: Dr. Bryane Michael is a senior research fellow at HKU's Faculty of Law. He also taught at Oxford University's Said Business School. An economist and jurist by training, Bryane has been in finance most of his life. In recent times, his focus has been on trying to understand how Web3-based FinTech can help push sustainable development. Please read more at: www.hkufintech.com/regulatoryramblings HKU FinTech is the leading fintech research and education in Asia. What are the biggest trends that affect the future of agency recruitment? Are you positioned for success in the rapidly evolving world of work?    With advances in Open AI and the growing popularity of remote work and the gig economy, the recruitment industry is set for a major transformation in the next 5-10 years. This shift might cause fear and uncertainty among recruiters, however if you're aware of the trends, remain agile and are willing to adapt, you can capitalize on the tremendous new opportunities that will be created.   Join us in this episode with special guest, Rob Green, as we explore the future of agency recruitment amidst the rapidly changing technological landscape. Rob reveals his insights based on extensive research and shares the specific steps his company is taking to stay relevant.  Rob Green is the CEO and Founder of The GRM Group, a holding company that combines leading recruitment, research, recruitment tech, and management consulting brands, all servicing the global legal industry. With 20 years of experience in the recruitment industry and having placed lawyers in 40 countries, Rob brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussion. Episode Outline and Highlights [03:05] Why and how Rob's business model has evolved since we last spoke. [08:00] How skill matching platforms will change the recruitment industry. [14:57] Why Rob created a research company, GRM Intelligence. [26:45] The future of the recruitment industry.  [29:40] Core trends that are changing the way that we work.  [40:30] How should you adapt your recruitment business to stay relevant? [47:33] Preparing for the future; why Rob is investing in Umbiie.   The Three Meta Trends That Are Changing the Recruitment Industry   Recruiters and recruitment business owners are always interested to know how technology such as Opan AI will affect the industry. You'll enjoy hearing Rob's fascinating insights about the future of work, based on the research report that he commissioned.  His research team identified three trends that will transform the way people work and how companies recruit:    The Sharing Economy / Gig Economy Global Talent Pools / Distributed Teams The Skillset Revolution   Rob urged the listeners to zoom out from the world of recruitment for a minute and realize how the world is changing based on the above three meta trends. We also discussed the growing “gig economy,” and how talents prefer to work from anywhere in the world and would prefer project-based instead of full-time. If you fear that AI will take a majority of jobs in the future, that is not the crazy part. Rob cited a report by Dell Technologies which it states that “80% of all the jobs in the next decade that we'll all be working in haven't even been invented yet.”   What does it mean for you as a recruiter or a recruitment business owner? As Rob very well puts it, “There's going to be a whole new way of recruiting, a whole new skill set of recruiting. And we can prepare for this.”   Leveraging Skill-Matching Platforms for Recruitment   Rob dived into how they are adapting to the trends of the shared economy and shared data by means of technology. They are using the platform StiiNT.iT (Stint It) - to simplify their process and maximize potential. The platform is a private-labelled recruitment technology where “Professionals across the world are vetted and skills verified creating anonymous profiles. These profiles will be searchable and accessible, whether it sits on someone else's platform or your own – building a collaborative talent pool, ensuring 100% matches, and removing unconscious biases.”   Rob's team has white-labeled the Stint It platform to create Umbiie (umbiie.com), a global skills-matching platform for legal professionals. It's not a perfect comparison, but this is the equivalent of Bumble for recruiting - the idea is that candidates choose which employers can unlock their profile.    Rob shared how they deal with data privacy and how the platform can be monetized. As he stated, “This is really not a pitch because I don't get anything out of this. This is just, do you wanna prepare for the future? Do you believe that there's going to be pressure on contingency recruitment? If you do, there is a solution out there.”   Our Sponsors   This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro and Recruitment Entrepreneur.   i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform. Boekentips In this landmark work, four of the world's leading scholar-activists issue an urgent call for a truly intersectional, internationalist, abolitionist feminism. As a politics and as a practice, abolitionism has increasingly shaped our political moment, amplified through the worldwide protests following the 2020 murder of George Floyd by a uniformed police officer. It is at the heart of the Black Lives Matter movement, in its demands for police defunding and demilitarisation, and a halt to prison construction. And it is there in the outrage which greeted the brutal treatment of women by police at the 2021 Clapham Common vigil for Sarah Everard. As this book shows, abolitionism and feminism stand shoulder-to-shoulder in fighting a common cause: the end of the carceral state, with its key role in perpetuating violence, both public and private, in prisons, in police forces, and in people's homes. Abolitionist theories and practices are at their most compelling when they are feminist; and a feminism that is also abolitionist is the most inclusive and persuasive version of feminism for these times. Vind het boek hier in de webshop. Now, Darren Harbutt is not new to the teachers‘ Lift. Back in 2020, he featured in one of our early episodes when HKU hosts, Phil Smythe and Aditi Jhaveri, where he shared his expertise on blended learning with a focus on e-assessment. Now it's the turn of Dawn Gillis and Eric Tindall asking the questions, as we take a look in the rear view mirror of the last two years and ask whether there have been any silver-linings to all the hurdles we've faced since the days when zooming required a telephoto lens. In this illuminating discussion, Darren introduces us to the exciting new world of HyFlex, where in-class instruction meets on- and off-line learning, and leaves us asking the question, will this become the new normal.

Bilingualism in Hong Kong is often the product of learning English as a second language (L2) after Cantonese has been acquired as the first language (L1). Issues of code-switching (speakers alternating between two or more languages), interference (use of elements of one language while speaking or writing another) and translanguaging (with an emphasis on the interconnectedness of languages allowing learners to use the full range of their linguistic repertoire) often come up in most discussions pertaining to teaching English to bilingual learners. Yet, when confronted with these issues, many teachers express ambiguity, and anecdotal evidence suggests that language educators feel unsure about which side of the debate they are on. In this episode, Professor Stephen Matthews from the Department of Linguistics at HKU, clarifies some of our common misunderstandings and responds to certain criticisms and confusions surrounding bilingualism.
