Meg is an individual who uniquely blends engineering and design, having started her journey in engineering before pursuing art and design. This shift towards experience design has lasted throughout her career, and you'll hear how profoundly it has impacted her work.Evidation leverages health data from wearables and smartphones to impact healthcare decisions, setting the stage for objective, data-informed discussions between patients and doctors. With Data Privacy Day on the horizon (January 28th!), Meg emphasizes the importance of data transparency in crafting a delightful consumer-grade healthcare experience.Meg offers valuable insights throughout the conversation. She advocates how she and her team have found success in designing for the 'off moments', allowing their users to disengage when they need to and re-engage easily on their own terms. She also emphasizes the importance of allowing users to switch their focus, whether it's from activity level to sleep patterns. These strategies maintain long-term engagement.Meg also shares advice for listeners who aim to improve their own practices. Intensive user involvement, maintaining a beginner's mindset, and practicing patience forms the crux of successful design. Meg insists on going beyond the present app scope and envisioning the future experience based on deep qualitative research, ensuring that the product is tailored to meet both the obvious and unspoken needs of the users.—Guest BioMeg Dryer is the General Manager of Consumer at Evidation, where she is responsible for Evidation's presence in the market. Prior to Evidation, Meg was VP of Consumer Experience at Cambia Health Solutions. Before moving into healthcare, Meg led teams at Nike where she worked on projects such as the Rio Olympics and at IDEO, where she did venture and business design. Her work is deeply human-centric: she cares deeply about understanding customer needs and crafting solutions and stories to meet these needs. Meg has a BS in Interaction Design from Stanford University and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.—Guest Quote"If you are trying to force someone in your app or your experience to maintain that high level of engagement, they drop off. But if you craft an experience designed for the off moments, where it's okay for it to take a back seat for a while, people can re-engage when they're ready. Find the transcript, show notes, and more on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/barry-katz We bet you don't know where the term “interaction design” comes from, but Barry Katz does. Katz's book, Make It New, captures the lost history of digital design that should be required reading for all in the software design industry. Eli first got to know Barry Katz as a professor at Stanford during his undergrad education in product design, where Barry taught one of his favorite classes: The History and Philosophy of Design. Typically, Eli was drawn toward the more project-based classes where he got to spend late nights in the machine shop making things, but Barry's humor and knowledge of the depths of design history brought the academic side of design to life for him. In our conversation with Barry we learned when exactly design became an essential part of technology businesses, and the origin story behind some of the challenges designers commonly have with engineering teams. This is an eye opening episode. Bio Barry M. Katz is Professor of Industrial and Interaction Design at California College of the Arts, Consulting Professor in the Design Group, Department of Mechancial Engineering, at Stanford University, and Fellow at IDEO, Inc. You really changed my life over the last few years and I take my red pill everyday by listening to your content. Keep up the good work. A buddy of mine met a Russian woman who migrated to our country a few years ago and has now become Muslim, claiming faith gives her direction in life because she was a model among other things, then deleted her social media accounts so that random men don't text her anymore. My buddy was also fully into MGTOW before, didn't care much for marriage, having kids, and women in general, but now has made a complete turnaround and wants all the things he never wanted. I still haven't given up my hopes and pray that he wakes up and separates at some point before he puts himself through all this. Anyway, they "recommended" me an acquaintance of his girlfriend, who is also of Muslim faith and doesn't want Arab men anymore because they have worse values than western men. I then got her number and texted her, now comes the interesting part of the story. She fled to Europe 8 years ago from Syria with her family and learned the language here and started to study Interaction Design. She separated from her husband - with whom she has a 5 year old son - because he beat and oppressed her. Since then she is looking for a western man, but she wants to keep her Muslim faith, that her new husband converts, accepts the existing child and fathers 2 or 3 more with her. Furthermore, one is not allowed to touch her, see her without hijab etc. before marrying her. The marriage must happen within one year and must take place both according to Muslim "law" and your countries law. She rejects a prenup because it would be "too complicated". I am self-employed and for me it would never come into question to marry without a prenup or to marry at all. According to Muslim tradition, you agree on an amount, e.g. $20,000 or a certain amount of gold that the wife gets when you divorce - unless she cheated. So you get double fed: First you have to give her all this staged money and then you have to pay alimony as well. I told this story to several friends, all of them had the same opinion as me, that it is absolute scam and even more absurd than a normal western woman. All the women I told this to were clearly more restrained and did not really support me. They rather joked that it would be funny if you got involved in this bad deal and that you just had to respect their beliefs. Now imagine that you would demand all that from a woman, because you find Muslim women visually and in terms of values pretty nice, force her to become Christian, to adopt your culture and faith completely, to align her whole life according to your standards and also to give you money for the marriage and to sign contracts that would be at a disadvantage for her. The media would tear you apart for that.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/mgtow/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

California's Silicon Valley is home to the greatest concentration of designers in the world: corporate design offices at flagship technology companies and volunteers at nonprofit NGOs; global design consultancies and boutique studios; research laboratories and academic design programs. Together they form the interconnected network that is Silicon Valley. Apple products are famously “Designed in California,” but, as Barry Katz shows in this first-ever, extensively illustrated history, the role of design in Silicon Valley began decades before Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak dreamed up Apple in a garage. In Make it New, Katz tells how design helped transform Silicon Valley into the most powerful engine of innovation in the world. From Hewlett-Packard and Ampex in the 1950s to Google and Facebook today, design has provided the bridge between research and development, art and engineering, technical performance and human behavior. Katz traces the origins of all of the leading consultancies—including IDEO, frog, and Lunar—and shows the process by which some of the world's most influential companies came to place design at the center of their business strategies. At the same time, universities, foundations, and even governments have learned to apply “design thinking” to their missions. Drawing on unprecedented access to a vast array of primary sources and interviews with nearly every influential design leader—including Douglas Engelbart, Steve Jobs, and Don Norman—Katz reveals design to be the missing link in Silicon Valley's ecosystem of innovation. Barry M. Katz is Professor of Industrial and Interaction Design at California College of the Arts, Consulting Professor in the Design Group at Stanford University, and Fellow at IDEO, Inc. He is coauthor of Change by Design, with Tim Brown, and NONOBJECT, with Branko Lukić (MIT Press). Learn more about your ad choices. Hallie Ayres talks to Miriam Hillawi Abraham and Nasra Abdullahi about their text, “The Afro-Cosmologist's Treatise on the Astrolabe,” published in the Cosmic Bulletin 2021.  Miriam Hillawi Abraham is a multi-disciplinary designer from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With a background in Architecture, she works with digital media and spatial design to interrogate themes of equitable futurism and intersectionality. She holds an MFA in Interaction Design from the California College of the Arts and a BArch in Architecture from the Glasgow School of Art. She is a CCA-Mellon researcher for the Digital Now multidisciplinary project, a 2020 fellow of Gray Area's Zachary Watson Education Fund and a Graham Foundation 2020 grantee. Nasra Abdullahi is a designer, writer, and editor based in London. She is currently a junior writer at Wallpaper* magazine, the 2021 guest editor of The Avery Review and a member of the second cohort of New Architecture Writers. A student at the Bartlett School of Architecture, she is interested in ways we can seek equitable futures through material cultures away from projected architectural and urban desires. Seeking a multiplicity in spatial practice, she is interested in what modern architectural technology can look like when innovated and reappropriated through and in relation with various knowledge systems. Currently her work is centered around exploring the possibilities of using analytical tools from black and indigenous radical traditions to inform us about design and technological practice.
