Today most of us don't know the name Marion Harris, but Grandma probably did when she was a teen-ager listening to that new-fangled radio in the parlor.Songs that summed up the transition from the stodgy, gaudy Gilded Age to the brave new world of The Jazz Age were often the recordings of Marion Harris. Her tunes like “Jazz Baby” and “They Go Wild, Simply Wild, Over Me,” “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and “Take Me to the Land of Jazz” were a soundtrack of the changing times. Her most enduring legacy? It was a 22-year-old Marion Harris who introduced the world to “After You've Gone,” 1919's bestselling American tune, written by the African-American vaudeville duo of Turner Layton and Henry Creamer. The pair wrote the song to bring some life to a failing road show called “So Long, Letty.” The road show continued to fail, but the song hooked audiences, taking off with a life of its own. Their HitsOne of the most frequently recorded pre-1920s jazz standards, “After You've Gone” appeared on the Top 20 charts on at least nine different occasions between 1919 and 1937. Highlighting them all were the 1927 recordings by Sophie Tucker and by Bessie Smith. And Layton and Creamer weren't finished. Three years later, they penned another beloved early-jazz standard, “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans,” which they advertised as "A Southern Song, without A Mammy, A Mule, Or A Moon." (What a dandy dig at some of the Tin Pan Alley clichés of the era!) One of that song's earliest recordings was 1927's signature rendition by Bix Beiderbecke and Frank Trumbauer. The Turner Layton OdysseyTurner Layton worked as a singer and dancer in vaudeville using original material. A Washington D.C. native, he received musical training from his father, a bass singer, music educator and hymn composer. The young man attended Howard University Dental School, then moved to New York, where he met Henry Creamer, with whom he wrote several Broadway musicals, the most successful being something called “Strut Miss Lizzie” in 1922.That same year, Layton left his partnership with Creamer to form a high-rolling cabaret act with Clarence “Tandy” Johnstone, performing in Harlem and at private parties for monied patrons like the Astor and Vanderbilt families. The pair followed their ritzy clientele from Newport in the summer to Palm Beach in the winter. It was in Florida in 1924 that the two met Lord and Lady Mountbatton, who persuaded them to move to England, where Edward, Prince of Wales, became one of their fans. Layton and Johnstone sold more than 10 million records between 1924 and 1935. Layton stayed in England until his death in 1978.Meanwhile, Marion….Marion Harris also moved to England, and the Prince of Wales became one of her fans too, especially enjoying her sets at the Café de Paris. But tragedy loomed. During World War II, the home she shared with her third husband was destroyed in 1944 by a German V1 rocket, a disaster that triggered in her a neurological disorder. Later that year while in New York to seek treatment, Harris died in a hotel room fire. She had fallen asleep while holding a lit cigarette. She was 48.Meanwhile, the song that linked their lives lives on. It became so popular, in fact, that years after its composition, the sheet music for “After You've Gone” was decorated with tiny photographs of the 45 performers who made the song famous, everyone from Paul Whiteman and Rudy Valle to Guy Lombardo and Louis Armstrong. Our Take on the TuneThis is a tune that our Flood brother Danny Cox brought to the mix. In fact, with a chuckle, he said, “I can't believe y'all weren't already doing this one.” True enough. “After You've Gone” was one that got away … until recently, when Danny corralled it and brought it to the table. Audio Branding
Jingles All The Way

Audio Branding

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 23, 2020 5:10

The holidays are just around the corner, and we all know what that means: Christmas songs on the radio and holiday jingles in just about every store. But there's one kind of traditional jingle we aren't as likely to hear these days: the commercial jingle. If you used to wish you were an Oscar Mayer wiener, if the best part of waking up was Folgers in your cup, if you were ever stuck on Band-Aid brands because Band-Aid's stuck on you, then you probably grew up in the heyday of advertising jingles. So, whatever happened to those jingles? Do they still have a place in audio branding, or have the Toys R Us kids all grown up? In many ways, jingles were the first step in the history of audio branding, and they're much older than you might think. If you know the Muffin Man or can sing along to Hot Cross Buns, then you're already familiar with the jingles of the colonial era. Those rhymes started with vendors in the Middle Ages who had to find ways to make their street cries stand out and get people's attention. That meant short, simple phrases often set to music, and the fact that we can still recite some of those rhymes today shows just how well they worked. With the invention of radio came the modern jingle. Now vendors had to grab and hold the attention of millions of people, and General Mills did just that in 1926 with a barbershop song called "Have you Tried Wheaties." That one commercial turned Wheaties sales completely around in the Twin Cities market, and when the company aired the song nationwide the following year, Wheaties went from a failing brand to a household name. Want to hear the jingle that started it all? Here's a link to the original ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLy5tANvXhY Other companies quickly caught on and started coming up with their own musical numbers, and the jingle era was born. From radio to television to the internet, jingles became pretty much synonymous with audio branding. Promoting a brand meant giving it a jingle, whether it's the Chiquita banana song, the singing Meow Mix cats or Coca Cola teaching the world to sing. But things began to change around the turn of the millennium. Those catchy earworm jingles started to disappear. In 1998, 12% of television ads featured jingles; by 2011 it was just 2.5%. But if commercials weren't using jingles, what were they using? For the most part, they were now using licensed songs. This wasn't a completely new development; those medieval street cries were often set to popular folk songs of the era, and the "Have You Tried Wheaties" jingle borrowed its tune from the 1919 song "Jazz Baby." Michael Jackson ushered in a whole new era of melding pop music and advertising with his "Pepsi Generation" commercials set to the tune of "Billy Jean," and ten years later Microsoft borrowed the Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" as its anthem for Windows 95. What did change is that advertisers were no longer relying on famous musicians and recognizable songs. More and more often, the commercials featured smaller artists and songs that many viewers hadn't heard before. With DVR and streaming content rendering the old 30-second TV spots obsolete, the focus shifted to simply engaging the viewers and convincing them to keep watching the ad. Without a captive TV audience, advertisers needed those viewers to like and share their commercials. One way to do that is by promoting new music that might get people talking and, more importantly, watching. For a great discussion of the rise and fall of jingles, check out this Cheddar Explains video "The Unexpected Death of the Ad Jingle": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUhJ3f72PRc But as new media continues to evolve, jingles are making a surprising comeback. Online ads, often just a few seconds long, have allowed companies to create musical brands that immediately stand out despite their length. Just think of McDonald's and its wildly successful "I'm Lovin' It" theme, or how State Farm's "Like a Good Neighbor" jingle has...

Stories From The Eastern West

Hear all about a brave bear named Wojtek who came to join the army in a time of war. After being released from Soviet prison camps, exiled Polish soldiers reunited under General Władysław Anders and were informally dubbed ‘Anders Army’.  This army, after evacuating the Soviet Union, traveled to the Middle East to join Allied forces. While in Iran, the Anders’ Army added an unlikely member to their ranks who played an important role in the company as he helped to boost morale, carry ammunition, and perform guard duties.  Though this soldier may appear to be rather typical, he was far from it. He was, after all, a Syrian brown bear. In this episode, our hosts John and Nitzan discuss the unbelievable story of Wojtek the bear and his legendary role in the 22nd Company of Anders’ Army. How did the army find this bear and why did they keep it, even incorporate it? How did Wojtek contribute to the military efforts? And what became of him after the war was over?
