The initial goal was to fund our 2025 Best of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast album. Happily that goal was reached within three days of the start of the campaign. Now we have a secondary stretch goal to fund the… IRISH & CELTIC MUSIC PODFEST AND ARTS MARKET This is a one - day music festival and arts market that will take place on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at The Lost Druid Brewery in Avondale Estates, GA, 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta. There are four bands performing at the festival. I am performing one show solo and one show with May Will Bloom, where my daughter takes the lead. Kinfolk will join us as well as I mentioned last week. But the final band performing at the festival is a 3 - piece version of The Muckers, our local Celtic punk band. That will complete our lineup. Follow our event page on Facebook for more details. Or Follow us for Free on our Patreon page. Now my next goal is to raise $3200 so that all of the bands are paid a decent wage and to promote our first - ever Celtic festival. To that end, I added three new rewards for Kickstarter. Each is a chance to sponsor individual bands at the festival. When you do, you'll get one of the first album pins from each of these amazing Celtic bands. That's because we are highlighting album pins at the festival as well, as another means to promote the music of bands. Our album pins are wooden lapel pins themed to a particular album released by a band. The buyer gets a digital download of the album, then they can wear their album! There's just 8 days left on this Kickstarter. So please make a pledge to support Celtic culture through music. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Donald Macleod explores Vienna in the company of Franz SchubertOf all Europe's major cities, perhaps Vienna is the one with the reputation as the most comfortable, the most sophisticated, and the most musical. In fact, has any other city been home to so many great composers as Vienna? Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, and Salieri all spent their best years working there. Yet none of those starry names was born in the city, none were true Viennese. This week, Donald Macleod explores Vienna through the lens of arguably the greatest home grown composer the city has ever produced – Franz Schubert – a man whose short life spanned a crucial period in Austrian history, a time of crisis and much change. In his company we'll explore Vienna's churches and theatres, its parks, coffee houses and taverns, and also glimpse the darker side of the city too – the excesses of Europe's aristocracy and the all seeing eyes of Vienna's secret police.Music Featured: “Kupelwieser” Waltz in G flat Major, D Anh I/14 Symphony No 9 in C Major “The Great”, D944 (3rd mvt, Scherzo) String Quintet in C Major, D 956 (2nd mvt, Adagio) Beitrag zur fünfzigjährigen Jubelfeier des Herrn von Salieri, D407 Marches Militaires, D733 (No 1 in D Major) Gretchen am Spinnrade, D118 6 Moment Musicaux, Op 94, D780 (No 3 in F min) Mass No 1 in F Major, D105 (Gloria) Grande Marche Funebre, D859 Symphony No 2 in B flat Major, D125 (4th mvt,Presto) Rosamunde, D797 (No 5 ,Entracte No 3 in B flat Major: Andantino) Licht und Liebe, D352 Quartettsatz Lazarus, Act 2 (unfinished) Schwanengesang, D744 4 Impromptus, D899, Op90 (No 3 in G Flat Major) Symphony No 8 in B minor, D759 “Unfinished” (1st mvt, Allegro moderato) Symphony No 5 in B flat Major, D485 (1st mvt, Allegro) Winterreise, D911 (No 24, Der Leiermann) Der Wanderer, D489 Piano Quintet in A Major, D667 “The Trout” (3rd mvt, Scherzo) 38 Waltzes, D145, Op 18 (Nos 6, 8 & 9 ) An Sylvia, D891, Op 6 (No 4) Fantasy in F minor, D940, Op 103 Ave Maria, D839, Op 52, No 6 Mass No 6 in E Flat Major, D950 (Credo) Rosemunde incidental music, D797 (Nos 7-9) Alfonso and Estrella, D732 (Act I, Aria “Sei mir gegrusst, o Sonne!”) An die MusikPresented by Donald Macleod Produced by Sam Phillips for BBC Audio Wales & WestFor full track listings, including artist and recording details, and to listen to the pieces featured in full (for 30 days after broadcast) head to the series page for Schubert and Vienna https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0026800 And you can delve into the A-Z of all the composers we've featured on Composer of the Week here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3cjHdZlXwL7W41XGB77X3S0/composers-a-to-z

In the mid-1930's, Alfred Hitchcock picks a rather unusual assignment: Waltzes from Vienna, an adaptation of an operatic musical about Johann Strauss Jr.'s composition of The Blue Danube. Although Hitch took out most of the play's music, it's still the closest we'll ever get to a Hitchcock musical. We watched this obscure film and actually have a pretty fun discussion about this movie we were both kinda dreading. The Details: Waltzes from Vienna, released 1934 by Tom Arnold Production. Produced by Tom Arnold, screenplay by Alma Reville and Guy Bolton, adapted from Bolton's play. Starring Esmond Knight, Jesse Matthews, Edmund Gwenn, Fay Compton, and Frank Vosper. Ranking: 51 out of 52. Ranking movies is a reductive parlor game. It's also fun. And it's a good way to frame a discussion. We aggregated over 70 ranking lists from critics, fans, and magazines, and will be going through Alfred Hitchcock's films from “worst” to “best.” Walzes from Vienna got 313 ranking points and is in second-to-last last place.

And now the polka, you worms. Hitchcock makes a musical! ...kinda. It's an operetta, which were very much in fashion at the time; a little music, a little dancing, and a love story at the center. This one centers around a highly-fictionalized version of how "The Blue Danube" was written in 19th-century Vienna. So, can Hitchcock do song and dance? We watch and find out!

At the age of 16, he played with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He went on to make landmark recordings with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. He's considered one of the most important drummers in history — and he would've turned 100 years old this week. Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes is a new film about the musician by award-winning filmmakers Sam Pollard and (our very own!) Ben Shapiro. Today on the podcast, we sat down with them to discuss the life and music of Max Roach, and the decades of work that went into creating the film. The pianist Karin Fernandes makes an invaluable contribution to Brazilian classical music: PERFUME, a project divided into two volumes, is the first complete recording of the waltzes by the composer and conductor from Rio de Janeiro, Chiquinha Gonzaga.  Awarded in 21 national competitions, including the "X Prêmio Eldorado de Música", Fernandes has stood out for her performance as a soloist, regularly performing with orchestras such as OSESP, Amazonas Philharmonic, and Ensemble Cairn in France.  In this second volume, the pianist presents 20 of the 41 waltzes written by Chiquinha, including the unreleased ones Perfume “Feno de Atkinsons”, Desalento, O Padre Amaro, Robertinha, Viver é Folgar (From "A Filha do Guedes"), Maria, Harmonia das Esferas and Aguará “Garça Vermelha”. Synopsis On today's date in 1911, the Independent Music Society of Paris sponsored “An Anonymous Concert” at which the audience was invited to guess the composers of a number of pieces presented without attribution. Professional music critics were also in attendance, although they prudently refused to reveal their guesses, fearing their professional reputations might suffer as a result. In the audience was the French composer Maurice Ravel, who had agreed to let some of his new piano pieces be performed as part of the experiment. “The title Valses nobles et sentimentales is a sufficient indication that my intention was to compose a chain of waltzes following the example of Schubert,” Ravel wrote. “They were performed for the first time, amidst protests and booing, at this concert.” Even more droll, recalled Ravel, were the reactions of some his most ardent admirers, who didn't know any of his own music would be played. They jeered at his waltzes, calling them “ridiculous” and ventured the guess the composer must be either Satie or Kodaly. Ravel accepted their comments in stoic silence. The audience proved more astute than Ravel's friends, however. “The paternity of the Waltzes was correctly attributed to me,” recalled Ravel, “but by a weak majority.” Music Played in Today's Program Maurice Ravel Valses nobles et sentimentales Minnesota Orchestra; Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, conductor.
