Thomas J. Slater talks about the subject of his new book, silent era screenwriter June Mathis, who didn't let her gender stop her from becoming one of the most influential people working in the movies in the 1920s. Her affiliation with Rudolph Valentino boosted him to super stardom. Serial expert Bob Bloom offers a spotlight on Walter Miller who hailed from Dayton, Ohio.
In 1927, the Hollywood stars (and spouses), Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr stood outside their California home, arms raised in fascist salute. The photo's caption, referencing the couple's trip to Rome the previous year, informs fans that the couple “greet guests at their beach camp in true Italian style.” How did “America's sweetheart” and her husband, a swashbuckler on and off screen, both patriots who had promoted Liberty bonds following the United States' entry into World War I, come to normalize something like Italian Fascism in its first decade? How did the Italian-born divo, or star, of Hollywood's silent cinema, Rudolph Valentino come to function as foil and counterpart to Benito Mussolini's, the duce, in public opinion in American culture in the 1920s? Winner of the 2019 award for best book in film/media from the American Association for Italian Studies, The Divo and the Duce: Promoting Film Stardom and the Political Leadership in 1920s America (University of California Press, 2019) tells the story of the relationship between celebrity culture, charismatic leadership and national sovereignty as it plays out on both sides of the Atlantic from roughly 1917 to the end of 1933. Giorgio Bertellini asks how two racially othered foreigners, Valentino and Mussolini, became leading figures in America and how these two icons of chauvinist Latin masculinity became public opinion leaders in a nation undergoing a major democratic expansion in terms of gender, equality, social mobility, and political representation. In the post-WWI American climate of nativism, isolationism, consumerism, and the democratic expansion of civic rights and women's suffrage, the divo and the duce became surprising paragons of both authoritarian male power as well as mass appeal. Bringing together star studies, screen studies, political science, Italian Studies, and American Studies Bertellini's study teaches us to think in new ways about cinema, political authority, masculinity, and race in Italian cinema and beyond. Meticulously archived, the author pays especial attention to the mediators between screens and the polity, a vast cast of players including journalists, photographers, ambassadors and other functionaries of state, advertisers, sponsors, and publicity agents, all of whom, on concert, work to promote the “ballyhoo” of the day. Thanks to the efforts of TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem), a collaboration of the Association of American Universities, the Association of University Presses, and the Association of Research Libraries, The Divo and the Duce: Promoting Film Stardom and the Political Leadership in 1920s America is available free in an open access edition. Author Paul Koudounaris explored the profound emotional and cultural significance of pet death and animal memorials, emphasizing their purity and directness compared to traditional human death rituals. He highlighted how grieving for pets often feels more personal and intimate, as the bond between humans and their pets is deeply private and reflective. Pets, Koudounaris argued, become mirrors of their owners, and their passing can feel like losing a part of oneself. This unique grief is compounded by societal norms that downplay the mourning of animals, even though most people experience the loss of a pet, he added.Koudounaris detailed the diverse global practices surrounding pet death, from elaborate Asian rituals conducted by Buddhist monks to specialized cemeteries in the United States, such as those exclusively for bird dogs or coon dogs. He underscored the rich cultural variations in honoring animals, from handcrafted wooden memorials in Finland to glass doghouses in South America. In the U.S., pet cemeteries are particularly abundant, reflecting a vast infrastructure of love and remembrance for pets, Koudounaris said. He shared touching and eccentric stories, such as the controversy over Rin Tin Tin's burial and the elaborate rituals some owners perform for their beloved animal companions.Koudounaris spoke about the spiritual and theological dimensions of pet death. He critiqued the historical belief that animals lack souls and celebrated concepts like the Rainbow Bridge, which provides hope of reuniting pets in the afterlife. Koudounaris tied this to the broader theme of the innocence of animals, asserting that their death feels unjust due to their purity. He also shared stories of paranormal activity linked to pet cemeteries, such as the ghost of Rudolph Valentino's dog, which continues to search for its owner.------------------------------------------Open Lines followed in the latter half of the program. Don in Alberta, Canada, discussed the impressive abilities of dogs, particularly their capacity to detect diseases, including cancer, seizures, and other conditions, often before symptoms become apparent. According to Don, different breeds have varying levels of olfactory sensitivity and he recounted examples of dogs detecting drugs, explosives, and even predators from great distances. Done advocated for the broader use of trained dogs in hospitals and medical settings, suggesting that dogs are more effective and cost-efficient than advanced medical equipment for certain diagnostic tasks.AC in Cleveland shared insights about the Pearl Harbor attack, highlighting lesser-known details. He recounted the story of an Army mobile radar unit at Kahu Point in Oahu, which detected incoming Japanese squadrons early on December 7, 1941. However, their warning to Hickam Field was dismissed, missing the opportunity to scramble planes and potentially mitigate the attack. He also noted the U.S. had broken Japanese codes months prior, which later contributed to victories like the Battle of Midway. The final half our featured a replay of the late author Hal Lindsey discussing biblical prophecy.

It seems like a cut and dry case, and it is, but there's a great deal of drama between her arrest and the somewhat anti-climactic trial. By the way, the sheiks referred to in the story are not from the Middle East, but because of the popularity of popularity of the Rudolph Valentino film, “sheik” became jazz slang for good-looking playboy types.Ad Free EditionMore Femmes FataleBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.
Born a heterochromatic baby (put down the medical reference book - it means she's got two different colored eyes) with the last name "Bible" on Halloween night, Karie was destined to be nothing if not unique. It wasn't long after movies became ubiquitous in America that movie fan magazine appeared. Eventually there would be more than 20 of them. Gladys Hall had a stellar reputation as a “safe” interviewer who could be depended on to tell a good story without any scandal. Her interview with Hungarian actor Bela Lugosi is one of the strangest things you could imagine. She was married to glamour photographer Russell Ball, remembered today for his classic portraits of Louise Brooks, Rudolph Valentino, Greta Garbo, and Gloria Swanson, who used Ball as her private photographer. Gladys Hall and Russell Ball are interred in an unmarked grave in the Lansdowne Section of Laurel Hill East. If you like watching movies, you'll love this podcast about their early days – the mid-April 2024 edition of Biographical Bytes from Bala: Laurel Hill West Stories #031 – Glamourizing Early Hollywood.

Who better to have on the show to discuss scary wrestlers for Halloween than the man who wrote a book about maybe the scariest of them all, The Sheik (Edward Farhat)? I'm happy to welcome for the first time on the show, author, historian and podcaster Brian R Solomon (@BrianRSolomon). Brian's biography of the Sheik, Blood and Fire, tells the story of how the boy fascinated by Middle Eastern culture in things like Rudolph Valentino's The Sheik and Michael Powell's The Thief of Bagdad, would provide the basis for his wrestling persona. We talk about his amateur wrestlingcredentials garnered during World War II and how they were part of his initial pro wrestling career, before he eventually became the Madman from the Middle East. We go over most of his career, both in the US, including his promotion Big Time Wrestling in Detroit and his phenomenal success in Japan, first with All Japan and then a decade later in FMW. Since Brian is currently working on a book about Gorilla Monsoon, we talk about the similarities, at least being amateur wrestlers who ended up with “foreign heel” gimmicks. We also have a fascinating conversation about early 20th American attitudes toward “exotic” cultures, like the Middle East and the Far East and how that shaped their gimmicks. We also look at how The Sheik, one of the biggest heels in the 1970s, never portayed the kind of anti-American character we associated with people like the Iron Sheik, Adnan Al-Kaissie or Scandar Akbar. From there, we have a long chat about the candidates for this year's Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame. Since we both have votes, we go over who we think the strongest candidates should be, even if there's no guarantee they'll be elected. We also discuss of the flaws in the system and ways it could be improved. We also have some chat about wrestling's place in popular culture in the 1970s and how the bloody wrestling magazine covers played into the seediness of the sport, before it became more sanitized in the 1980s. Finally, there's some comics chat, where I recommend some current books Brian might enjoy as a lapsed comics reader. This was a great show and I hope to have Brian back on the future to discuss some of the things we only briefly mention. Make sure to check out Brian's books and his podcast, Shut Up and Wrestle, part of the Arcadian-Vanguard network.
Snicker if you must, because that's an understandable reaction to an annual tradition in Northwest Indiana. At the Pierogi Drop every New Year's Eve in the city of Whiting, a 10-foot tall version of the dumpling associated with Polish cuisine is dropped into a boiling cooking pot at the stroke of midnight. And in the summer, the Pierogi Fest in Whiting sometimes draws more than 350,000 enthusiasts. Also in Lake County, a historic former courthouse in Crown Point was known for decades as a "marriage mill". Hollywood celebrities like silent movie star Rudolph Valentino, sports icons such as Muhammad Ali and Joe DiMaggio and other notables trekked to Crown Point for speedy weddings. No waiting periods, residency requirements or blood tests were required then. Now known as the Old Lake County Courthouse, the former "marriage mill" structure, which was built in 1878, is a tourist destination that houses a museum and distinctive retailers, including antique shops as well as merchants who sell vinyl records and vintage clothes. The clothes won't be needed at two rival clubs, one of which dates to the 1930s in the city of Roselawn. The Sun Aura Club (which has had several names during its colorful history) and the Ponderosa Sun Club are nudist colonies. A third such club also flourishes in Northwest Indiana: The Lake O' The Woods Nudist Colony can be found in Valparaiso.

For this month's vintage case, we look at another untimely death of one of Hollywood's earliest stars, Ramon Novarro. A Mexican immigrant, Novarro rose to stardom in the silent film era and then transitioned to talking films at a time when the audience was hungry for "Latin lovers" like Rudolph Valentino. His journey to megastardom was deceptively meteoric and required him to hide his sexuality due to the era and the strict studio system. His tragic death came at age 69, at the hands of Paul Ferguson; a murderer who went on to create a post-prison alternative history of the event. You won't want to miss this fascinating book and conversation.
A new year and a "staggering" group of Wampas Baby Stars, The Old Movie Lady tells you all about how audiences laughed upon hearing the voice of a goddess, a 175-grand win-fall, an infuriating way to hire someone, and a good girl who no one believed could be bad! All this and more, featuring John Barrymore, Cecil B. DeMille, and a Rudolph Valentino quote. This episode contains mention of an unconfirmed suicide attempt, alcohol abuse, and brief mention of domestic abuse, as well as (mild) language that may be inappropriate for some listeners. Like the sexually-liberated Tiger Queen from her scandalous bestselling 1907 novel Three Weeks, Elinor Glyn was bold, provocative and glamourous, with a magnetism that endeared her to international readers and Hollywood celebrities alike. (She counted Mary Pickford, Gloria Swanson, Rudolph Valentino, and Charlie Chaplin among her personal friends.) After introducing the concept of the steamy “romance novel” to the staid Victorian world, Glyn became a pioneer of the Hollywood movie industry and shaped how romance was, and still is, portrayed on the silver screen. Carla's 2020 book, "This Was Hollywood: Forgotten Stars and Stories" takes a look at personalities and events that have been, mostly, lost to history. Brandon and Carla discuss such wide-ranging events as the first Oscars ceremony and the death of Rudolph Valentino. Personalities such as Gracie Allen and Vera-Ellen are also covered. The interview concludes with the heart-wrenching story of John Garfield and the House Un-American Activities Committee. Carla's passion for classic Hollywood is infectious and we look forward to our listeners hearing these stories. "This Was Hollywood: Forgotten Stars and Stories" is available wherever books are sold from Turner Classic Movies and Running Press. Carla Valderrama is an author, Hollywood historian, and the creator of the Instagram accounts @thiswashollywood and @thiswasfashion. "This Was Hollywood" is her first book. The frenzy Rudolph Valentino caused in life was matched only by the pandemonium unleashed when he died at age 31. With his brooding good looks and vulnerability, he and the other "Latin Lovers" that followed redefined the leading man. Mo also recounts the triumphant and tragic story of superstar Ramon Novarro and talks with TV star Lorenzo Lamas about his father, the debonair Fernando Lamas.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
As Hollywood found its footing at the turn of the 20th century, so did a handsome young artist who'd soon be known around the world as Ramon Novarro. In his heyday, the Mexican-born actor was mentioned alongside leading men like Rudolph Valentino. But with the discovery of his battered body decades after his star had faded, Novarro became better known for the personal life he'd spent his whole life trying to keep private. "Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from the Obsessed Network exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. This is the first episode of a new Broadway Nation mini-series that explores what I am calling, “The Other Broadway”. Today when we see or hear the word “Broadway”, we most likely think of New York's Theater District and it's 41 active theaters nestled in and around Times Square (where today 36 plays and musicals have thankfully returned to the stage!) Or that word evokes the legendary cannon of shows that have played in those theaters, most especially those great, glorious Broadway musicals that up until now have been the principal subject of this podcast. That, however, is really only part of what “Broadway” has meant to most people during the first half of the 20th Century – when Broadway was at the center of American culture. For more than 5 decades the word “Broadway” meant not just the performances in the legitimate theaters – those Plays, Musicals, and Revues. But also, or even more so, it meant the Nightlife that surrounded them. From the 1910s through the 1950s there were hundreds of cabarets, speakeasys and nightclubs crammed into the Theater District. And they epitomized “Broadway” just as much as what was happening in the theaters, In fact, the most famous songs about Broadway – those anthemic tributes that you hear on every Tony Awards show and every Broadway themed occasion such as “Give My Regards To Broadway”, “Lullaby Of Broadway” and “On Broadway” – all have lyrics that are much more about the nightlife than they are about the shows. During this series I will lead my listeners on a late night tour of Broadway's most famous hot spots including Rector's, Reisenweber's, The El Fay Club, Club Durant, Club Richman, The Hotsy Totsy Club, Club Alabam, The Silver Slipper, The Pansy Club, The Stork Club, Casa Lopez, La Conga, 21, The Parody Club, The Rainbow Room, The Latin Quarter, El Morocco, The Astor Roof, The Cotton Club (it was in Times Square for a while), Billy Rose's Diamond Horseshoe, The Copacabana and many more. There you will rub elbows with such stars as Vernon & Irene Castle, James Reese Europe, Sophie Tucker, Clifton Webb, George Raft, Rudolph Valentino, Gilda Gray, Texas Guinan, Ethel Waters, Florence Mills, Helen Morgan, Harry Richman, Bill Robinson, Cab Calloway, Desi Arnaz, Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Fats Waller, and Clayton, Jackson, & Durante to name only a few. However, before we venture out into the night, we need to look back to the origins of this other side of Broadway, so in this first episode I explore exactly where New York nightlife began. I hope that you enjoy it. I am now entirely obsessed and fascinated by this subject! Please let me know what you think! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
