Jane Morris is the queen of improv comedy! Her story is as unique as she is!. Co-founder at Second City ETC, she has done more to advance the art of Improv than anyone else in the universe - and that's not hyperbole! She has performed and taught all over the world and currently teaches at The Fanatic Salon Theater in Culver City, California. The Fanatic has hosted many comic legends such as Conan O'Brien and Wayne Brady. Jane is a writer, director and a beloved member of the Improv community. Jane has so many movie and TV credits as an actor I can't possibly list them all. Her first film was "Nothing in Common" with Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason. And in 2019 she was in "The Laundromat" with Meryl Streep and her husband, Jeff Michalski, who made a guest appearance on this show. She had a recurring role on "The Drew Carey Show". I was so fortunate to meet Jane in person this year and she is a warm and generous person. I know you'll enjoy getting to know here in this podcast. For over 30 years the Second City ETC (Experimental Theater Company) has been pumping out hilarious shows in Pipers Alley, right next door to its older sibling, the Chicago mainstage. In that time the ETC has produced as much quality comedy as any Second City stage. Today we are delighted to have the three actors who were the driving force behind the creation of the ETC. Jane Morris, Jeff Michalski, and Bill Applebaum were members of the touring company who wanted to put up an original show in the empty theater behind the Main Stage. The obstacles they had to overcome and the pushback the received from ownership made the eventual success of their show that much sweeter. These Second Citizens join us to tell their own personal stories and for the first time, they share their collective memories about the creation of the ETC theater. As you might guess, there are some memories that it takes all three plus our host to put together. After all it was a looooooong time ago. This is a must listen for comedy history buffs! Other buffs too!Don't forget how much we love it when you Subscribe, Rate & Review!
Hosted by Ralph Weichselbaum, MD, Chair of the Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology, University of Chicago, this episode tackles the burgeoning world of radiopharmaceuticals and features two radiation oncologists: Jeff Michalski, MD, MBA, Washington University in St. Louis and president of ASTRO, and Freddy Escorcia, MD, PhD, National Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health. They kick it off by giving background context on isotope therapy and the current data for these therapies in different malignancies, including an update into peptides and SBRT; provide commentary on how randomized controlled trials account for the complexities of radiopharmaceuticals in their design (especially pertaining to selection criteria and dosage); and share how a radiation department is structured and staffed to account for all patient needs, including a push for a novel patient-centered approach that involves the nuclear medicine department. Emma is one of the leading teachers of comedy improvisation in Liverpool and the North West. Emma's approach to teaching improv is grounded in her 30 year professional experience as an actor and theatre director. In my conversation with the very impressive Emma Bird, she told me how, onstage, she plays cheeky, silly, and “a bit bonkers.” Emma spoke to me about finding her people when she joined a youth theater group at the age of 7. She talked about creating that same kind of community with Liverpool Comedy Improv (LCI). We chatted about tapping into imaginative play as a kid and connecting with your own playful spirit as an adult. We spent time going over what we learned from the pandemic. We both agreed that, for us personally, live theater feels more life affirming that zoomprov. (Though we do both love the opportunity we had to meet and connect through this medium!) We talked about the benefits of being a go getter with your own creative projects. “Make it and they will come,” she says. We discuss the importance of saying YES. Getting either Jane or Jeff on individually would have been incredible (and will eventually have to be done) but to get them both on at the same time was an unbelievable treat and a fascinating trip through their history in comedy/improv and the acting world. Almost all of late 20th century comedy came through them. And to say they've worked with everyone is an understatement. Al Pacino, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Jackie Gleason, Amy Sedaris, Chris Farley, Stephen Colbert, Drew Carey, Gary Marshall - I'll stop there because it is harder to find someone in comedy who isn't connected to Jeff ands Jane and I'm truly happy to call them friends and to have had them on my show. Enjoy!
For this episode, Whit has a conversation with Jay Sukow — a US improviser based in LA, but in New Zealand traveling for this recording. After catching up a bit, we jumped into an amazing conversation about his favorite (by far) of over 300 10-minute scenes that he's been doing since early on in the pandemic. This is all the more impressive given that his online series “10 Minutes with…” where he improvises a 10 minute scene with someone from anywhere on the planet, has over 100,000 views. Jay is very much about positivity towards improv and saying yes within your improv. This has led to a continued desire and enthusiasm for improv and improv community online – something that we also spend some time talking about in this episode. As far as Jay's background, he's been improvising for nearly 30 years. A few of those he has trained with include Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, David Razowsky, Keith Johnstone, Del Close, Charna Halpern, Jeff Michalski and Mick Napier. He is a graduate of training centers of The Second City, The Second City NW, iO Chicago, and ComedySportz Chicago and the founder of Today Improv. He also served as the Artistic Director/Head of Training at the Improv Comedy Copenhagen Theatre, where he taught improv and sketch comedy to expats from all around the world. He previously taught for Second City Chicago, Second City Hollywood, Westside Comedy Theater, iO Chicago (where he was also head of its artistic committee), iO West and ComedySportz Chicago, and has taught at many improv festivals around the world, including the Oslo Impro Festival, the Copenhagen International Improv Festival, the Barcelona Improv Festival and the Chicago Improv Festival. He is the winner of The Golden Pineapple, awarded to the best visiting teacher at Improv Comedy Copenhagen. At the Westside Comedy Theater, Jay is in the cast of Mission Improvable and Improv Famous, an Armando-style show featuring some of the best improvisors on the planet. He is also part of the duo Zer0 H0ur with Bill Chott and was an ensemble member of ComedySportz Chicago, several weekend “house” improv teams at iO Chicago and many other improv and sketch comedy groups. At least, that's the in person stuff! Also, Jay is the co-host of ImprovCast with Jay and Landon. Follow Jay and Jay-related stuff at: JaySukow.com Today Improv Facebook Twitter Instagram Jay also appeared as a panelist on the first session of the Covid-19 Improv Summit and both sessions related to online improv in the Summit.
Practical Radiation Oncology executive editor Jeff Michalski, MD, hosts a conversation on the recently published ASTRO clinical practice guideline on radiation therapy for soft tissue sarcoma. Two of the authors of the guideline, Ashleigh Guadagnolo, MD, MPH of MD Anderson Cancer Center and Kilian Salerno, MD, of the National Cancer Institute, discuss the development process of the guideline and the evidence for the recommendations included. Matthew Spraker, MD, PhD of Washington University in St. Louis leads the discussion, asking the authors of the guideline about the use of bolus, pre-operative vs. post-operative radiation therapy, and the importance of multi-disciplinary collaborative decision making.

Jeff Michalski is an actor, director, improvisor, teacher, mentor and so much more. He worked in comedy clubs across the country with the Original Comedy Ranger and was a member of the Groundling in Los Angeles before settling with the Chicago Second City in 1980. During his years with the Second City, Jeff studied with Paul Sills and his historic Story Theatre. While traveling the country with Second City’s National Touring Company he continued training with Second City founder Paul Sills, and artistic directors Del Close, Fred Kaz and Bernie Sahlins. In 1984 Michalski and his wife, Jane Morris, founded theSecond City ETC. His directorial debut , “Cows on Ice” made the ETC an instant hit and was followed by the even larger success of “Mirrors at the Border”. His achievements brought him to the Second City Toronto where he was nominated for a Dora Award for his direction of “Who’s Tory Now?” Michalski continued as director and Artistic Director of the ETC until 1988 when his success in Chicago led him to be chosen as director of the premiere production of the Second City in Santa Monica, also a critical success. While still in Chicago with the ETC, Michalski also helped found the Second City Training Center, a comprehensive training program from which the next generation of Second City players are chosen. He also founded the Second City Training Program in Santa Monica. Mr. Michalski and Ms. Morris founded the Upfront Comedy Showcase in 1990, and The Comedy Underground in Santa Monica in 1998. He is currently teaching people from all walks of life to improvise at the fanaticSalon in Culver City. As a producer, director and performer, he has worked with Dan Castellaneta, Chris Farley, Amy Sedaris, Mike Meyer, Steven Colbert, Ryan Stiles, and many more. Jeff can be seen in the upcoming film The Laundromat with Meryl Streep.
Ever wondered who helped actors like Stephen Colbert, Chris Farley, Amy Sedaris, and Paul Dinello to hone their comedy chops when they were starting their careers? Our guests, Jeff Michalski and Jane Morris, have directed, taught, and worked with these and countless other improvisers and writers, encouraging their originality and unique comedy voices. Through their theater, Fanatic Salon in Culver City, CA, Jeff and Jane bring the skills they developed at Second City in Chicago to new generations of improvisers and writers in Los Angeles and beyond. Jeff and Jane discuss working with and learning from improv legends Del Close and Paul Sills, taking acting classes from fellow Chicagoan David Mamet, watching Chris Farley audition for Second City by performing a belly flop on stage, and getting serious with Jim Jeffries. They also discuss their monthly improv performances with the Immediate Theater, led by Dan Castellaneta (aka the voice of Homer Simpson and Krusty the Klown), staged at the Fanatic Salon. Jeff and Jane provide invaluable insights into all aspects of performance and writing.
Jane Morris has improvised, written, performed, and directed shows around the world. Beginning in Chicago, where she helped found the Second City ETC with her husband Jeff Michalski, and later from her own theaters in Los Angeles, no one has done more to advance the art of improvisation than Jane. As an actress with over 58 credits to her name she is best known for her roles in Raising Helen, True Lies, Frankie and Johnny and recently in Veep. As a director Jane was nominated for a 1988 Joseph Jefferson Award for Director of a Revue for "Channel This" at the Second City Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. Jane conducts a solo performance workshop that takes original work from idea to staging, to performing. The class works with actors and writers at any level of the process, whether they are just getting started, or almost ready to mount a whole solo show. Her workshop has produced 9 original shows and every participant has finished work. http://scholarsy.blogspot.com/2017/04/jane-morris-explains-improvisation-and.html https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0606623/ http://janemorriswritework.blogspot.com/
Jeff Michalski is an improv legend. He is a teacher, director, an improviser who was a founding member of Second City's ETC Theater back in the '80s and now teaches in Los Angeles.
