Gillian Bellinger is a beloved improviser, teacher and actor. She founded the now thriving Misfit Improv and Acting School in Asheville, N.C. which just celebrated its one year anniversary. I had met Gillian during the pandemic with our mutual friend, Jay Sukow. We reconnected recently at the Sketch School with Marc Warzecha in Sketch 101 and I knew I wanted to know more about this very funny lady. We talk about growing up in Texas and how the improv bug got her. Gillian's resume is amazing. She has performed as an improviser and taught at Second City Chicago, Second City Hollywood, Westside Comedy Theater in Mission IMPROVable, Comedy Sportz. She is a SAG voiceover actor and has appeared in numerous commercials, TV and film. When asked why she named her new theater “Mifit” she told us. “A bit of a misfit lies in each of us. That unique part of our spirit that delights in play. We strive at Misfit to create that same kind of place, a place to belong, to connect, to create and be a misfit.” Gillian is a generous and brilliant person and I for one am looking forward to visiting her in Asheville! https://www.misfitavl.com
Dr. Jeanne Leep – Improv Nerd Meet the brilliant author and professor, Dr. Jeanne Leep. Jeanne played improv in Grand Rapids, Michigan and went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Theatre. I had the good fortune to play with Jeanne recently and was awed by her spontaneity and joy. She went to high school with our mutual friend Jay Sukow and then went on to the University Of Michigan and Wayne State College. Her best-selling book, “Theatrical Improvisation: Short Form, Long Form, and Sketch-Based Improv” is a classic book on the history of improv and sketch comedy that gives a clear definition on this often ambiguous topic. The forward was written by Jeanne's friend, Keegan Michael Key. Her research is extensive and this is certainly a book to add to your Improv Library. Brimming with original interviews from leaders in the field such as Ron West, Charna Halpern, John Sweeny and Margaret Edwartowski, Theatrical Improvisation presents straightforward improvisational theory, history, and trends. She is a Professor of Theatre Arts at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin and her students are really fortunate to have her wisdom and humor. I had the good fortune to meet Tashika Campbell a few years ago when she was covering a class for Jay Sukow. I loved her energy, compassion and brilliance then and I still do today. In 2023 I studied with she and Steve Pilloff and it was fabulous. Tashika began improvising in 2027 in Baltimore, Maryland and was originally from Charlotte, North Carolina. We chatted about her first plays she wrote in elementary school that her younger sister would perform. She continued her love of theatre but didn't really see that could be a “career”. When she was introduced to improv, she knew she'd found her home. Tashika is a founding member of the award-winning independent troupe Cake Walk and where that term came from. Tashika has headlined festivals across the US and coordinated the first Improv festival dedicated to Black Improvisers in the DMV. She is a much sought-after. Coach, teacher and workshop facilitator. You can see her work in this 2021 YouTube video from Highwire Improv and the Black Improv Alliance showcasing Baltimore area Black improv and sketch comedy. https://youtu.be/M481elrUioM?si=lvKDll7edGF_NMbI I know you'll love learning more about Tashika! The finale of my conversation with Jay Sukow. I always like talking to Jay. He as experience, kindness and one thing I greatly value in friends - he is honest. I always aim to reward that economy of honesty. Highly recommend Jay Sukow as a teacher and to see his shows. He is commonly teaching in-person improv classes in Los Angeles. To stay upto date follow him at Today Improv, in fact he is teaching an improv intensive at the end of this year! (2023) https://www.facebook.com/todayimprov
We keep going about improv and it's community. I feel like Jay should be the AD at an improv school somewhere. LITERALLY, if he set up roots at an improv school somewhere I would consider moving my whole family there and helping him start up a school. I've taken Jay for two courses, and had him coach some teams. I believe he has such an amazing view on improv, that brings the best out in people. His teaching style is inspired by famous coaches and spiritual leaders ... but he is not lofty. He is grounded and real. He cusses, he loves the Beastie Boys and stands up for what's right. You can find out more about Jay here: https://www.jaysukow.com/
I love Jay Sukow. I had the opportunity to interview Jay about "control" in improv and more. I could talk to Jay forever. He has been one of the biggest inspirations in improv. He has such a soft touch when teaching. Jay says stuff so simple but also so profound - and I think that is genius. You can find out more about Jay at: https://todayimprov.com/ His goal is to have everyone take at least one improv class.
Liz Allen is truly an improv legend. She is a sought after improv coach. In fact, for several years I've wanted to study with her but whenever I tried to sign up for an online class - they were full! Learning about her improv journey, philosophy and insight into this art form was truly a gift! Liz is an improviser and teacher who, among other things, coached the improv team in Mike Birbiglia's film Don't Think Twice. She recently performed a solo piece, “I am my Mother” a dark comedy about her relationship with her southern mother who struggled with addiction, and how her family coped. We chatted about growing up in an addicted family and how that informed her comedy and love of theatre. We actually played a scene, and I'm so glad we did! I met Liz through Jay Sukow. They started improv classes together over 30 years ago and remain close friends. Liz is a charming, humble and amazing person and eventually I will take a class with her! Enjoy this podcast! Ted Waltmire was a librarian, pianist and community musical director until his life completely changed in 2009 when he suffered a stroke and lost the ability to play the piano with his left hand. After many years of rehab therapies his friend Dale Galiniak who worked for him at the library suggested Improv. He had an “aha” moment when he realized that despite his continued physical limitations, he could play improv games. He jumped in with both feet and pursued classes at Second City Chicago and landed in a writing class. When his teacher learned his story he suggested that Ted write his life story, which became a musical directed by Jay Sukow and musical direction by Stephanie McCullough. Stephanie said about Ted, “He is such an impressive person. His musical abilities are outstanding." His story is inspiring to anyone, but especially people who have had similar life changes. We laughed and cried and I know you will love Ted as much as I do. Visit my website where I speak to today's leading innovators of improv. “Your mind sometimes hijacks your emotions to think the worst-case scenario in order to protect yourself. You need to reclaim your mind in order to be in control.” Jay Sukow Jay began teaching for Second City in 2010 and teaches in both the Improv and Conservatory programs. He is also a facilitator with Second City Works, teaching improv to business professionals to drive behavior change. Previously, he was on faculty at The Second City Chicago, iO Chicago, and ComedySportz Chicago. He is the co-host of “Improvcast with Jay and Landon” and currently performs around town with the group Zer0 H0ur with Bill Chott and Jay Sukow, as well as the monthly show Improv Famous. He has over 25 years of experience as a leader. As an Improv leader and coach, Jay speaks about the dynamics of living the future and having a standard that we can never live up to instead of living in the moment and the “now.” A difference in how we look at the world shifts our focus from our failures into the zone of learning and growing. We will always have stressors in our lives, and instead of avoiding them, we need to learn how to deal with them because we all have seasons and ups and downs; just because it happens now doesn't mean that it will be the same forever. However, always having a positive mindset in all situations will lead you to a happy and more content life, both personally and professionally. He is the founder of Today Improv, who teaches improv to actors, businesses and everybody else. He has extensive experience helping businesses drive behavior change through improvisational philosophies and exercises. Jay teaches currently at MI's Westside Comedy Theater, and is a large fan of the Beastie Boys! He wants to share improv--and the Beasties--with people to show how they can benefit from knowing both. I took what scared me and listened to why - I realized it scared me because it was important to me not because the act itself was scary and I followed that fear home. Since then, my relationships with myself, others, and my passions have changed. I want you to take the amazing advice of Jay Sukow and follow your own fear. This week on Yes But Why, I talk to the “Mayor of Improv,” Mark Turpin. Mark Turpin is an improviser originally from Manchester and now based in Liverpool in the UK. Mark earned the moniker “Mayor of Improv” for the support he gives to his fellow improvisers in the global Improv Community. Mark has taken online workshops and courses with top improvisers from all over the world, such as Jay Sukow, David Escobedo, Michelle Gilliam, Will Hines and Stephanie Rae. At home in the UK, Mark is a member of Liverpool Comedy Improv. He performs with the Oickers Improv Comedy Troupe, a group that met online through Zoomprov at the suggestion of Liverpool Comedy Improv instructor, Emma Bird. Mark has also been a guest on the Liverpool Comedy ImprovCast with Iain Luke Jones. A self-professed introvert, Mark wasn't exactly looking to be a performer but with his “can do” attitude, he decided to try out an improv drop in class in Manchester. Swept away by the magic of creating things on the spot as well as the joy and the laughter, Mark decided improv was definitely something he wanted to do again and again. In our conversation, Mark tells me how improv has helped him to do better work presentations. We talk about the effort that goes into performing and how sometimes taking time away from improv is important selfcare. Mark tells me about his current improv home at Liverpool Comedy Improv and how much he has learned from his instructors as well as from fellow students. Mark has made some great friends from all over the world with improv. We talk about how great it is to make connections with other improvisers in the global Improv Community. Support Mark Turpin by following the Oickers Improv Comedy Troupe on Facebook and keeping an eye out for their online shows! For this episode, Whit has a conversation with Jay Sukow — a US improviser based in LA, but in New Zealand traveling for this recording. After catching up a bit, we jumped into an amazing conversation about his favorite (by far) of over 300 10-minute scenes that he's been doing since early on in the pandemic. This is all the more impressive given that his online series “10 Minutes with…” where he improvises a 10 minute scene with someone from anywhere on the planet, has over 100,000 views. Jay is very much about positivity towards improv and saying yes within your improv. This has led to a continued desire and enthusiasm for improv and improv community online – something that we also spend some time talking about in this episode. As far as Jay's background, he's been improvising for nearly 30 years. A few of those he has trained with include Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, David Razowsky, Keith Johnstone, Del Close, Charna Halpern, Jeff Michalski and Mick Napier. He is a graduate of training centers of The Second City, The Second City NW, iO Chicago, and ComedySportz Chicago and the founder of Today Improv. He also served as the Artistic Director/Head of Training at the Improv Comedy Copenhagen Theatre, where he taught improv and sketch comedy to expats from all around the world. He previously taught for Second City Chicago, Second City Hollywood, Westside Comedy Theater, iO Chicago (where he was also head of its artistic committee), iO West and ComedySportz Chicago, and has taught at many improv festivals around the world, including the Oslo Impro Festival, the Copenhagen International Improv Festival, the Barcelona Improv Festival and the Chicago Improv Festival. He is the winner of The Golden Pineapple, awarded to the best visiting teacher at Improv Comedy Copenhagen. At the Westside Comedy Theater, Jay is in the cast of Mission Improvable and Improv Famous, an Armando-style show featuring some of the best improvisors on the planet. He is also part of the duo Zer0 H0ur with Bill Chott and was an ensemble member of ComedySportz Chicago, several weekend “house” improv teams at iO Chicago and many other improv and sketch comedy groups. At least, that's the in person stuff! Also, Jay is the co-host of ImprovCast with Jay and Landon. Follow Jay and Jay-related stuff at: JaySukow.com Today Improv Facebook Twitter Instagram Jay also appeared as a panelist on the first session of the Covid-19 Improv Summit and both sessions related to online improv in the Summit.

Vishok Verma is a Professional Trainer of Communication Skills (Corporate, Social Enterprises, and Non-profits). He is the Founder & CEO of “Let's Express,” an organization that uses improvisational games and other performing arts exercises to boost the self-esteem and to improve the communication skills of young individuals from socio-economically disadvantaged areas of India. We talk about how Vishok connected his studies in social entrepreneurship to his work in improv. Listen to the journey of Miki Manting who created the first festival and workshops for folks over 50. She is truly a pioneer! Miki talks to us about how she became involved in improv and what inspired her to start this festival where improvisers who are fifty-years-old and over perform. At Improv theaters where casts are largely made up of improvisers in their 20’s and early 30’s vintage improvisers often experience the phenomenon of invisibility. Miki talks about how Vintage Improv changes that dynamic and about her upcoming 2020 Vintage Improv Festival (VIF) that runs September 10-14, 2020 https://www.vintageimprov.com/ In addition to the festival the VIF hosts several improv classes each week with improvisers that include Jay Sukow, David Razowski, Jill Bernard and Faustino Solis.

Would you believe that improv is used in the medical world? Margot Escott is a clinical social worker, licensed therapist, and professional speaker who has presented workshops and seminars on the therapeutic value of humor and play for over 30 years. She has studied and performed improv and was trained by some very well-known improvisers such as Gary Schwartz and friend-of-the-show Jay Sukow. In her practice, she uses improvisational theater exercises combined with cognitive behavior education to assist people suffering from anxiety disorders, Parkinson’s, and those recovering from addictions. Margot explains how this works, shares the story of how improv was never developed as a form of comedy, and much more. Join me and meet Peter Margaritis, CPA, CGMA, business coach, and author of Improv is No Joke, who uses applied improvisation to inspire people to achieve higher levels of success in their business. Through the improvisation tenets of Yes, And, keep it simple, collaborate and experience, Peter teaches his clients to embrace C.H.A.N.G.E. (Creative | Humor | Aspire | Navigate | Gracious | Ethical) and realize their visions and goals. I was lucky to meet Peter through my good friend and improv coach Jay Sukow, and I know you will be glad to get to know him too. When asked about why he uses applied improv in his work, Peter says “Applied improv is all about the ability to draw upon your experience, knowledge, and education to apply them in a way that meets the needs of the person you are talking to or working with – and it can be taught.” You can learn all about Peter at https://margotescott.com/podcast/peter-margaritis-the-accidental-accountant-and-applied-improv/ Learn more about Peter.

In this first of two episodes on online improv, the panel (Von Daniel, Amey Goerlich, Elana Fishbein, Roy Janik, Jules Munns, Jay Sukow, Paul Vaillancourt, with Whit Shiller as moderator) discuss the "why" behind doing online improv. We consider the community, performance and training aspects of putting improv and improv training online, and talk a little bit about how this medium might stay in play when we can return to on stage improv and training more fully.
This conversation hosted by Whit Shiller with Joe Bill, Holly Mandel, Ed Morgan, Rebecca Northan, David Razowsky, Patti Stiles, and Jay Sukow, is simply a conversation about how each is doing individually and how our improv communities and the global improv community are doing in the face of COVID-19.
We are all dealing with the stress of the unknown circumstances regarding the coronavirus pandemic. Improv has always been an incredibly impactful way to deal with the daily stressors of life and — in the midst of this global situation — is more useful than ever in helping to cope with overwhelming levels of stress. Jay Sukow joins us today to talk about how we can use the principles of improv to help make a difficult situation more bearable. Lukas Kirkby guest coached us, and then we had a rehearsal where I introduced the Mischief Managed format to the new players. I go over some incredible moves the players did in supporting one another. We did the warm up I learned from Jay Sukow which is called The Handshake where the team invents a handshake. Moves within that handshake have to be representative of the people who are doing the handshake, then they have to teach that handshake to everyone else. First of all, the moves made to emphasize the brilliance of another player’s moves were great! Second the ensemble of multiple people coming together to merge together to make one owl! AMAZING! And I loved how they re-used ideas from the beginning of the set so that everything had a purpose.
Jay Sukow is one of the best improvisers and teachers out there. He has taught at almost all of the Chicago intuitions and also served as the Artist Director at ICC Theater in Copenhagen. He now lives in Los Angeles and teaches and performs around the world. Jimmy caught up with him in Chicago at Green Shirt Studio to talk to him about why it's important to make positive choices in your scene work, why he uses anger in improv and how he is adapting his teaching as improv changes.
Jay Sukow believes that the world will be a better place if everyone takes just one improv class - and I agree! Jay is trying to make that world a reality as the founder of Today Improv, where he teaches improv to actors, businesses, and everyone else around the world. He is currently on faculty at The Second City Hollywood and former faculty member at The Second City Chicago. Two very different takes on what our default response to life's opportunities ought to be. Based on a pair of words that we all use every day. A pair of words with the power to change your life, alter the course of history, or simply stop you leaving the house. Those words, of course, are Yes and No.First we hear from Aalborg University psychology professor and bestselling author Svend Brinkmann about the importance of wearing "the No hat", the tyranny of positive thinking, and the "joy of missing out".Then we meet Jay Sukow, until recently the artistic director of Copenhagen's top improv school. He talks about the life-changing power of saying "Yes, and…", why mistakes should be seen as gifts, and why you should do one thing every week that scares you.

Laura Stoll is the Talent Development Consultant at Ernst & Young, and she has a fascinating perspective on how you can develop top talent within your organization that is influenced by her background in improv. Laura studied at Second City, iO, and ComedySportz Chicago. She even has the distinction of being the only student ever thrown out of previous guest (and current husband) Jay Sukow’s classroom! At EY, Laura strategizes, designs, and consults on large-scale programs designed to improve the value of the internal talent organization, which includes over 8,000 people. Their big focus right now is on the Career Journey. In every organization, people tend to resist change, especially the kind of large-scale change that Laura aims to create. So change management becomes critical, and that’s where the fundamentals of improv can really come into play. Improv isn’t about making things up––it’s about planning like mad, and then being prepared to throw your script away to meet the needs of the person you are talking to or working with. Learning improvisational skills inspires a more adaptable mindset, and you can’t approach change without that. Possibly the most exciting thing about Laura’s work at EY is that other people see the value of these skills, and the top leaders in the organization are getting excited about improv. There’s simply no way to effectively inspire a change in culture without buy-in from the top, so this is a huge step for a huge organization. And taking that step isn’t optional any more, for any organization. Global markets and whole industries are shifting rapidly – the organizations and individuals who resist change will be left behind. “If you’re not actively moving to shift your skill set so that you can be more in the moment, react, and respond – and ultimately be a trusted business advisor – you’re going to be left behind because that’s just the way things are evolving.” If you want to take your first step today, just practice awareness: When you feel yourself putting up a wall, saying no, or reacting negatively, pause and ask yourself, “How could it work?” It’s basic, but that little tweak will start you on the path to change. Jay Sukow believes that the world would be a better place if everyone took just one improv class – and I agree! Jay is trying to make that world a reality as the Founder of Today Improv, where he teaches improv to actors, businesses, and everyone else all over the world. Jay is also on faculty at M.i.’s Westside Comedy Theater and The Second City Hollywood, and co-host of the ImprovCast with Jay and Landon. In the 80’s and 90’s, there wasn’t a lot of understanding about what improv was. However, after years of people like Jay working with the public and businesses, people are starting to accept and understand why improv is so beneficial in both business and life. “Be the improviser that you want to play with; be the person in your business who you want to work with.” When Jay and his ensemble go to work with a business, they don’t claim to be business experts – but they are experts in communication, working together, being part of an ensemble, focusing on the team first, and using information. His goal is to get others to implement those skills within their business, or their lives, and make it a habit. And one of the most valuable skills and habits that you might learn in one of these Improv classes is Yes, And. Because in your professional world and your personal world, you will have to say Yes, and you will have to say yes to things that you don’t want to do or else you will lose something – so learning how to say yes, in a constructive manner, is a very valuable skill. Often times, we are struggling because we aren’t accepting something or making excuses. When we use Yes, And, we aren’t trying to find a quick way out of a problem or an acceptable way to make an excuse. We are saying before I shoot this idea down, how could it work? “You have to accept failure. Your failure is going to help us succeed in the long run, but we’re so focused on immediate results that we don’t allow ourselves that space.” Resources: Learn more about Today Improv Listen: ImprovCast with Jay and Landon -- Production & Development for Improv Is No Joke by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices. Jay Sukow came by to drop some firsthand knowledge on the use of improvisation in film. Jay and his production company, Group Mind Films, have made multiple features using [mostly] written scripts in conjunction with excellent improvisers to lead into and out of scenes, find unique, hilarious moments in scenes, and even at times improvise entire exchanges. Major themes include all of the creative and business prep involved in independent filmmaking, knowing when to strike out on your own away from established institutions and methods others have used in the past, and not hesitating to make a physical product or ask people to collaborate. Thanks to Know Your Company for sponsoring this episode and Chicago Podcast Cooperative for facilitating sponsors.
Jay Sukow, a fixture in the Chicago improv scene, has been improvising since 1992. He’s a wonderful teacher, director and faculty member at Second City, a co-founder of the production company Group Mind Films and has been a guest performer at Boom Chicago, the Second City, and “Messing with a Friend.” He spoke with Jimmy about their early days together in Chicago improv, how he got through the depression of his late 20s, his favorite parts of teaching, and why short-form shouldn't get the short end of the stick.
On today’s episode Dave interviews Director Jay Sukow. Jay is currently a faculty member of Second City Chicago and is director for Group Mind Films. A.D.D. Comedy welcomes Director Jay Sukow.
