Today's guest is my improv hero, David Razowsky. Dave has performed in 10 revues at Chicago's Second City performing with the likes of Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, and Rachel Dratch. He also served as Artistic Director of The Second City Hollywood, and has conducted countless worldwide workshops and performances. Dave's approach to improv is simple: Your present awareness is the only thing you need to create compelling, smart, truthful, and surprising scenes. Period. No games, no preconceived premises, no ideas, no ego. All that matters is now. Dave also did a TEDx Talk which he titled “Life: The Product is the Process". This year, he released his long awaited book titled "A Subversive's Guide to Improvisation: Moving Beyond Yes, And", which is currently available on paperback at Amazon.com. This man has been a huge source of inspiration to me, mainly because his methodology reiterates what I firmly believe: Improv is Acting. An alum of both the Reduced Shakespeare Company and Chicago's famed Second City (where he worked with Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert),  Dave discusses his own journey as an artist; from his roots as a young actor to a teacher with students all over the world; his book's unique structure; how actors must and can develop their own self-awareness; the importance of bringing one's authentic self to every scene; the joy of creating more monsters; and the rewards of improvising with Dee Ryan. (Length 23:14)

Improv Comedy Connection

For this episode, Whit has a conversation with Jay Sukow — a US improviser based in LA, but in New Zealand traveling for this recording. After catching up a bit, we jumped into an amazing conversation about his favorite (by far) of over 300 10-minute scenes that he's been doing since early on in the pandemic. This is all the more impressive given that his online series “10 Minutes with…” where he improvises a 10 minute scene with someone from anywhere on the planet, has over 100,000 views. Jay is very much about positivity towards improv and saying yes within your improv. This has led to a continued desire and enthusiasm for improv and improv community online – something that we also spend some time talking about in this episode. As far as Jay's background, he's been improvising for nearly 30 years. A few of those he has trained with include Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, David Razowsky, Keith Johnstone, Del Close, Charna Halpern, Jeff Michalski and Mick Napier. He is a graduate of training centers of The Second City, The Second City NW, iO Chicago, and ComedySportz Chicago and the founder of Today Improv. He also served as the Artistic Director/Head of Training at the Improv Comedy Copenhagen Theatre, where he taught improv and sketch comedy to expats from all around the world. He previously taught for Second City Chicago, Second City Hollywood, Westside Comedy Theater, iO Chicago (where he was also head of its artistic committee), iO West and ComedySportz Chicago, and has taught at many improv festivals around the world, including the Oslo Impro Festival, the Copenhagen International Improv Festival, the Barcelona Improv Festival and the Chicago Improv Festival. He is the winner of The Golden Pineapple, awarded to the best visiting teacher at Improv Comedy Copenhagen. At the Westside Comedy Theater, Jay is in the cast of Mission Improvable and Improv Famous, an Armando-style show featuring some of the best improvisors on the planet. He is also part of the duo Zer0 H0ur with Bill Chott and was an ensemble member of ComedySportz Chicago, several weekend “house” improv teams at iO Chicago and many other improv and sketch comedy groups. At least, that's the in person stuff! Also, Jay is the co-host of ImprovCast with Jay and Landon. Follow Jay and Jay-related stuff at: JaySukow.com Today Improv Facebook Twitter Instagram Jay also appeared as a panelist on the first session of the Covid-19 Improv Summit and both sessions related to online improv in the Summit.

David Razowsky is a effervescent ball of personality AND just so happens to be one of the top Improv Coaches in the world. If you're anything like me you'll be googling 'what the hell is improv'. It's acting.. improvisation (obviously). We talk about like on and off the stage, we talk about the twists and turns of life and what whisks us away and lands us where we land. I ended up loving the idea of improv acting and see it as an insightful platform from which to view ones self, much like the boxing ring was for me. Dave teaches me what makes a good improv performer, how many Laura's he dated and how be knows me (which happed to be a story all the way from 1960's) Enjoy! David Razowsky is one of the best improv coaches on the planet, has worked with actors all over the world and this conversation was not your typical TYP experience. But I loved it. And him. He's a gifted, creative, funny, fast-talking maniac. If my talking speed is 1.0, Dave's is 1.5. At times, 2.0. His insight into the human condition, his understanding of artistic performance and creativity, and his ability to empower people to ‘be someone else' (for a moment), is quite spectacular. He also called me on my self-deprecating ‘bullshit' about five times during this chat. I love a good reprimand! Enjoy.

This week on Yes But Why Podcast, I talk to improviser Siddharth Venkatesh. Siddharth Venkatesh is an improv performer with Improv Comedy Bangalore. In early September 2020, he co-created the ICB's Facebook Community Group. It has since become a central hub through which improvisers all over the world connect! Outside of Improv, Siddharth is an engineer and he loves to play Indian classical percussion. In our conversation, Siddharth tells me about the television show he was in as a kid and how that experience shaped his artistic aspirations as an adult. What a wild experience to have as a child! We gab about music, both playing it and enjoying it. We discuss the idea of finding a balance between structure and chaos in both our creativity and our lives. Siddharth expresses to me how he loves the current "globalization" of improv and how amazing it is that he gets to improvise with and learn from amazing performers from all over the world. Siddharth gushes about the great courses he has taken lately from improv greats such as Mandy Butler, Stephen Davidson, and David Razowsky. Jessie Gray, the visionary of Flying Pig Improv in Wichita, Kansas, loves working and playing with people who want to soar. To do that in improv, she creates a safe and fun environment where teachers, attorneys, artists, film-makers, restaurant servers, entrepreneurs, caregivers, performers - literally, everyone, can take risks, explore their own genius, and literally celebrate “mistakes” as they make them. Every game, every scene is an opportunity for gold. And each person in the room makes a huge impact on the experience.Jessie has more than 40 years of stage experience from coast to coast as an actor, director, producer and choreographer.A few years ago, she became fascinated with the spontaneous and unscripted world of improv. After intensive study in the San Francisco Bay Area (where she lived for almost 30 years), she began to perform, and then to teach classes, and then to direct and coach improv troupes weekly. She was a regular performing troupe member of Awkward Face at Pan Theater in Oakland, CA, and Flash Mob Musical Improv in San Francisco. She also teaches an annual workshop at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico as part of the summer Creative Arts Festival as well as other improv workshops around the country by request.A theater alumnae from Wichita State University, she learned from the best: Dr. Richard Welsbacher, Joyce Cavarozzi, Mary Jane Teall, Audrey Needles, and Gina Austin-Fresh among others. She also was a student of improv notables in California’s Bay Area, which include David Alger, David Razowsky, Rachael Hamilton, Tracy Burns, Mick Laugs, and Los Angeles-based Meisner coach, Matt Chait. And now she has brought her vast experience and deep knowledge back to her hometown of Wichita, Kansas, where she has built a new improv home at Flying Pig Improv.Check out Flying Pig Improv’s classes, workshops, and performance schedule at https://www.flyingpigimprov.com.For more information about Radiate Wellness, our practitioners, services, classes, and events, visit us at radiatewellnesscommunity.com, “Like” us on Facebook as Radiate Wellness, LLC; and follow us on Twitter @RadiateKC.If you enjoy this podcast, please subscribe, rate, and review wherever you are listening. From his 10 revues at Chicago's Second City performing with the likes of Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris, and Rachel Dratch, to the 10 years he spent as Artistic Director of The Second City Hollywood, to the countless worldwide workshops and performances he's engaged in, to his TEDx Talk, “Life: The Product is the Process,” David Razowsky has developed a simple approach to improvising: Your present awareness is the only thing you need to create compelling, smart, truthful, and surprising scenes. Period. No games, no preconceived premises, no ideas, no ego. All that matters is now. David joins Stephen, Eric, and Kam to talk about: -how David realized what he wanted to do in life through answering why he feels he’s on this planet: to help people. -the uncanny similarities between improv and buddhism. -David’s TEDx talk about the value of living in the moment. -the importance of giving yourself a round of applause once in a while. Then the quartet somersaults gracefully into some self-help, including interpreting a quote from Inspirobot, what to do about a "sloppy" tattoo, advice for Channing Tatum now that his new children's book is out, and so much more. We are in the midst of a global shattering, and improv director/teacher/actor David Razowsky is here to help us through it.  You may recall a few episodes ago when I was talking with Kim Farris-Luke about the global grieving process that I mentioned feeling the feelings we're feeling the moment we feel the feelings. That was channeled directly from David.  From his time on stage at The Second City in Chicago with the likes of Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert to his time as artistic director of The Second City Hollywood, David has developed an improv style of elegant simplicity, where the only thing you need is the person on stage with you.  In this week's podcast, we talk about getting comfortable with the unknown, how much of the big picture we (as mission-driven leaders) are actually responsible for, and how to reconnect with the things that make us who we are (among many other helpful topics). We also dive into personal growth and acceptance, the difference between having an emotion and being the emotion, and how to ground yourself when you feel un-tethered.  David offers rich insight into how to BE right now in the middle of a pandemic, which will help you become the leader that your team and your business needs.  Resources and links: David's website: https://www.davidrazowsky.com/ David's TEDx talk: https://youtu.be/Jp2EcuMbAmY Jill Bolte Tayler's TED talk, "My Stroke of Insight": https://youtu.be/UyyjU8fzEYU "A Brief History of the Dead" by Kevin Brockmeier: https://amzn.to/2W8FyBk Email Becky@virtualexecutivedirector.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/beckybrettcaldwell/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/BeckyBrett Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/virtual_exec/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/VirtualExecDirector

Mark Larson discusses his wonderful new book Ensemble: An Oral History of Chicago Theater, a magnificent (and massive!) collection of first-person narratives from such theatre legends as Alan Arkin, Brian Dennehy, Andre DeShields, Laurie Metcalf, Mary Zimmerman, Michael Shannon, Regina Taylor, RSC alum David Razowsky, David Schwimmer, and literally hundreds more, all explaining both the history and the unique nature of Chicago theatre as they lived and created it. Featuring gratitude to those who came before us; the concept of the Chicago theatre community itself as a massive ensemble; theatre as a civic point of pride; eliminating unnecessary characters (like the author); answering the question of why the concept of ensemble developed such strong roots in this particular city; the biggest surprises from this four-and-a-half year process (and how it relates to podcasting); similarities to Studs Terkel and Tom Wolfe; tales of enormous will and enormous generosity; great white whales who got away; the benefits of being an outsider at the edge of the story; making the reader feel part of the Chicago theatre community; how individuals and institutions assist and mentor others; and ultimately the freedom — the ability, the need — to take risks. She has been fortunate enough to perform all over New York, as well as in exotic towns like Detroit, Phoenix, Rochester, Seattle, and Prague, Czech Republic. She feels incredibly lucky to have studied with such amazing people as (in alphabetical order by last name) Rick Andrews, Russ Armstrong, Armando Diaz, Megan Gray, Ed Herbstman, Louis Kornfeld, Alex Marino, Peter McNerney, Lennon Parham, David Razowsky, Ari Voukydis, and Zach Woods.
