Green Left's Suzanne James talks to president of Dying With Dignity Victoria, Jane Morris about defending the important human right of end-of-life choice through Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) now legal Australia wide except in the Northern Territory. They discuss the October 2024 international Right To Die Societies conference in Dublin, November's Australia New Zealand VAD conference in Brisbane and the recent vote in the UK in favour of VAD by a traditionally conservative Westminster Parliament. It also covers the 50th Birthday of Dying With Dignity NSW and their first year of the legislation's operation, the five year VAD review in Victoria, and the renewed push to restore VAD rights in the Northern Territory. VAD is restricted worldwide to terminally ill people who have a medically certified diagnosis of imminent death. Advocates and activists continue to fight to protect the right to medical autonomy and to campaign against those who seek to undo it for political and religious gain. We are back in Venice for the latest edition of the biggest biennial in the world of art. The 60th Venice Biennale comprises an international exhibition featuring more than 300 artists, dozens of national pavilions in the Giardini—the gardens at the eastern end of the city—and the Arsenale—the historic shipyards of the Venetian Republic—and host of official collateral exhibitions and other shows and interventions across Venice. The Art Newspaper's contemporary art correspondent, Louisa Buck, editor-at-large Jane Morris and host Ben Luke review the international exhibition, Foreigners Everywhere/Stranieri Ovunque, curated by the Brazilian artistic director, Adriano Pedrosa. We talk to artists and curators behind five national pavilions—Jeffrey Gibson in the US pavilion, John Akomfrah in the British pavilion, Romuald Hazoumè in the Benin pavilion, Gustavo Caboco Wapichana, the curator of the Hãhãwpuá or Brazilian pavilion, and Valeria Montii Colque in the Chilean pavilion—about their presentations. And we like to end our Venice specials by responding to an example of the historic work that made la Serenissima one of the world's great centres for art. So for this episode's Work of the Week, Ben Luke gained exclusive access to one of the most significant paintings in Venetian history: the Assunta or Assumption of the Virgin made between 1516 and 1518 by Titian. Since the last Biennale in 2022, the Assunta has been unveiled after a four-year conservation project, funded by the charity Save Venice. We spoke to the man who restored this incomparable masterpiece, Giulio Bono, right beneath Titian's painting. The Venice Biennale, 20 April-24 November. Listen to the interview with Adriano Pedrosa in the episode of this podcast from 2 February. The website that Giulio Bono mentions, which will present the findings of the conservation of Titian's Assunta in detail, will go online later this year.Save Venice, savevenice.org.Subscription offer: subscribe to The Art Newspaper for as little as 50p per week for digital and £1 per week for print or the equivalent in your currency. A note from Amy Sailer for MQR's Fall 2023 issue "Transversions": I started writing about William and Jane Morris just before getting engaged. Their marriage has given me a rich vocabulary to imagine my own. They built a beautiful home together, Red House, which they intended as an artist's utopia, where they, their family, and their community of friends could create the home's medieval-inspired interior decoration, but the experiment fell apart within a few years, in part because Jane fell in love with their friend and fellow Pre-Raphaelite, Dante Gabriel Rossetti. When I visited Red House, the tour guide called it “a house of indecision.” They had so many unfulfilled projects—I could feel their high expectations and the stress it must have caused them. I had the opportunity to work on the project at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, where I learned that Morris & Company revolutionized nineteenth-century embroidery. The first half of the century was dominated by Berlin crewel work, a style that employs cross-stitch to fill out predetermined grid patterns. Morris & Company popularized “art embroidery,” a more creative technique, using a variety of stitches to create more organic designs. Both styles of embroidery lead to repetition and redundancy, but to my eyes, repetitive cross-stitches look monotonous and mechanical, while the repetitive patterns in a piece of art embroidery like Jane and Jenny Morris's “Honeysuckle” look joyful. John Ruskin argues in his essay “The Nature of the Gothic” that redundancy is a sign of pleasure—when we enjoy our work, we keep making more of it. Although we don't know the names of the women who created so much embroidery, I like to think that redundancy serves as a kind of signature.

For over 30 years the Second City ETC (Experimental Theater Company) has been pumping out hilarious shows in Pipers Alley, right next door to its older sibling, the Chicago mainstage. In that time the ETC has produced as much quality comedy as any Second City stage. Today we are delighted to have the three actors who were the driving force behind the creation of the ETC. Jane Morris, Jeff Michalski, and Bill Applebaum were members of the touring company who wanted to put up an original show in the empty theater behind the Main Stage. The obstacles they had to overcome and the pushback the received from ownership made the eventual success of their show that much sweeter. These Second Citizens join us to tell their own personal stories and for the first time, they share their collective memories about the creation of the ETC theater. As you might guess, there are some memories that it takes all three plus our host to put together. After all it was a looooooong time ago. This is a must listen for comedy history buffs! Other buffs too!Don't forget how much we love it when you Subscribe, Rate & Review!

The case will be heard in the US Supreme Court this autumn and has potentially huge implications for artistic freedom. 6% of today's corporations have complete supply chain visibility, making it nearly impossible for enterprise companies to source ethical manufacturers and ensure retail sustainability. To The Market is providing an incredible untapped production capacity around the world, particularly in the artisan industry. It's the second-largest economy in the developing world, behind agriculture, but is largely disconnected from the supply chains of traditional retailers and corporations. Through To The Market's work with consumers and makers, they take steps toward protecting our planet, empowering people through the dignity of work via sustainable, transparent, and ethical production. In addition, their proprietary data and inventory of suppliers ensure big players can provide a more sustainable supply chain. In this episode, Jane Morris, Founder, and CEO of To The Market shares how their clients like Bloomingdales, Target, Macy's, and Mastercard have bought into the mission of a sustainable supply chain. A Venice Biennale special: we give you a flavour of the 59th edition of the Biennale which, as ever, brings a deluge of contemporary art to the historic Italian city. We talk to four artists in the national pavilions – Francis Alÿs in the Belgian Pavilion, Sonia Boyce in the British pavilion, Shubigi Rao in the Singapore pavilion and Na Chainkua Reindorf in the Ghana pavilion – about their presentations and how, if at all, they relate to the idea of nationhood. Louisa Buck and Jane Morris join host Ben Luke to review the main exhibition, The Milk of Dreams, curated by Cecilia Alemani, and pick their highlights of the Biennale so far. And while most visitors to Venice this week are immersed in contemporary art, for this episode's Work of the Week, we take a look at a masterpiece that remains exactly where it was intended to hang. The art historian Ben Street joins Ben Luke in San Giovanni Crisostomo, a church near Venice's Rialto bridge, to look at Saints Christopher, Jerome and Louis of Toulouse, a late painting by the Venetian Renaissance artist Giovanni Bellini.Venice Biennale, 23 April-27 November.Ben Street, How to Enjoy Art: A Guide for Everyone, Yale University Press, £14.99/$20.  “Buying art is a little bit like buying property in Knightsbridge…if you buy a blue-chip artist who's dead and sit on it long enough then you probably will make money, but that means you need to be able to afford to sit on it for something like 30 or 40 years.“Art is a very difficult asset class generally, it's felt that if you have a wide portfolio then art is something interesting to put your money into, but you certainly wouldn't do it as your primary source of investment. It's also very easy to lose money.”Jane Morris is the editor-at-large of CultureShock Media, an arts and culture content agency that delivers print, digital, film and social media strategies for leading arts businesses, museums and galleries. Jane went to Central St Martins, where she studied fine art before studying journalism and has managed to establish a career which combines her fascination with both. She has written for The Art Newspaper, Monocle, the Economist, Artnet and the Guardian and has built teams of international writers covering news, investigative, data-driven reporting, analysis and long form features about the art world. We talk about investing in art, how to spot a trend (as well as what's best to avoid), THAT famous Banksy shredding moment and Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs). “There has been a view, I would say coming more from the investment world, that one of the reasons people don't buy digital art is because it's easily copied. I suspect that it's because it's not seen as as attractive as a painting on the wall.” We also talk about: The challenges and continuing effect of coronavirus on the art worldCurrent trends and ones to watch in the market Ring bidding in the upper echelons of the art worldThe risky game of trading art as an investmentThe lack of diversity in the art world and what museums are doing to rectify itYou can follow Jane on Twitter @MaryJaneMorris. About The Nicole Bremner Podcast: Nicole Bremner is an investor, speaker, writer, and podcaster. At the heart of the political debate around voluntary assisted dying lies palliative care. On one side sits the argument that it can effectively deal with all pain and suffering, and that it should be made available to everyone before Assisted Dying is made legal. On the other, a recognition that – for all its benefits – palliative care cannot help everyone, and that those beyond its help should not be left to suffer, or – as some do – take their own lives. But beyond the political debate, within palliative care lies a much deeper argument. One about values. Palliative care’s background is as a provider of Christian care; more than half of Australia’s palliative care is supplied by The Catholic Church. According to The Vatican, assisting someone to die is ‘intrinsically evil.’ By papal decree, any request by a person for help to end their life is not to be taken as genuine, but is to be understood instead as ‘an anguished plea for help and love.’ But some palliative care clinicians have a different set of values. They see that their primary purpose is to act in response to what their patient wants and needs.  It’s called person-centred care, a way of practising medicine that has been thrown into the sharpest focus imaginable by a law allowing doctors to help their patients to die. Palliative care clinician, and death and dying expert Molly Carlile AM. Our guests, Jeff Michalski and Jane Morris, have directed, taught, and worked with these and countless other improvisers and writers, encouraging their originality and unique comedy voices. Jeff and Jane discuss working with and learning from improv legends Del Close and Paul Sills, taking acting classes from fellow Chicagoan David Mamet, watching Chris Farley audition for Second City by performing a belly flop on stage, and getting serious with Jim Jeffries. They also discuss their monthly improv performances with the Immediate Theater, led by Dan Castellaneta (aka the voice of Homer Simpson and Krusty the Klown), staged at the Fanatic Salon.
