We discuss what it means to be prideful and why that's bad through the characters in our chosen movies Kalyug (1981) and Raincoat (2004). Both films are film adaptations of literary source material. Kalyug is based on the mighty epic Mahabharata and Raincoat is based on O Henry's short story The Gift Of The Magi. While Kalyug has giant egos, warring families and machinations, Raincoat explores the softer side of a bruised ego and the little fibs and lies we tell to soothe ourselves and others. Merlin is pretty proud of his dinner, but John has questions about the dressing situation. Merlin may not understand how skiing works. In Follow-Up, John shares more voices from the past, and your hosts confront an escalating international rift about the existence of a facial expression. Finally, it's time for Holiday Results, which somehow includes strong opinions on labeling leftovers, preparing strawberries, and sweating _le mot juste_. Also, ponies are considered.
To celebrate the end of the Christmas season and the start of a New Year, we bring you this classic short story, 'The Gift of the Magi', by O. Henry. It is his first appearance on The Well Told Tale, but will not be his last - he is the veritable master of the short story, and this example is no exception. Traditionally, the Magi reached the baby Jesus 12 days after Christmas to bestow their gifts, bringing the Christmas season to a close. While this story is set at Christmas, it is a message that resonates all year round.Books - (buying books from our Bookshop.org shop helps support this channel while also supporting local bookshops, at no cost to you):Books by our favourite authors - https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/the-well-told-taleChristmas with O. What's up, dudes? I've got Joe the Christmas Aficionado here to talk about the quasi-Gift of the Magi episode of the 1988 spinoff “Just the Ten of Us!” Coach buys Elizabeth an organ then tries to sell his broken down car not knowing the girls are working to fix the situation. This one's got it all! Large Catholic family? Check. Catchy ‘80s theme song? Yep. Tons of innuendo? Well, they fix the transmission…if you know what I mean!
