An unpleasant mental state that is characterized by irritation and distraction

13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.151 We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. 3 For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.8 For I tell you that Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to the patriarchs, 9 and in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. 1."Annoyance is the price you pay for community." Do you think that's an accurate statement? How do you personally navigate that tension? 2.Paul tells the strong to restrain their freedom for the sake of a tender brother or sister, even when they're right. Is there an area where you've had to hold a freedom loosely for someone else's sake? What did that cost you? 3.RC Sproul called it "the tyranny of the weaker brother" when someone tries to make their personal conviction everyone else's law. Have you seen that happen — or done it yourself? What does it look like when a disputable matter gets treated as indisputable? 4.It seems there can be a tension between living out the kingdom of God vs having the modern optimized, maximized life. Do you see that tension in your life and if so, where?5.Mrs. Leonard's whisper — "I wish you were my little girl" — is offered as a picture of what it feels like to really be welcomed by Jesus. Have you experienced Jesus' welcome? When/how?6.How can the gospel make you and our community more welcoming?
Today's Bible Verse: "Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you—for you know in your heart that many times you yourself have cursed others." - Ecclesiastes 7:21–22 Ecclesiastes 7:21–22 offers practical wisdom for navigating relationships and protecting our peace. Solomon recognizes a reality that is just as true today as it was in ancient times: if we listen closely enough, we will eventually hear something that hurts, offends, or disappoints us. Episode 3010: Hannah Brooks explores why highly sensitive people can become disproportionately irritated by their partners during stressful or overstimulating periods. By examining the deeper causes behind her frustration, challenging fearful thoughts, and prioritizing self-care, she found her feelings of annoyance replaced by affection and appreciation. Her insights offer a reassuring perspective for sensitive people who worry that temporary irritation means something is wrong in their relationship. Diana guides a meditation practice focused on increasing capacity to be with silence and open awareness. The practice emphasizes noticing the mind's urge to comment or problem-solve, then letting go, leaning back, and relaxing into the silence and space around noise—like a “permanent layover” with nowhere to go and nothing to do—while adding warmth and kindness. Do little annoyances keep piling up until you feel overwhelmed and reactive? In this episode, Diana Hill explores why annoyance isn't just about what's happening—it's shaped by your capacity (stress, heat, hunger, sleep) and the story you tell about the incident. Diana shares how noticing her own story with an airline agent, Wade, helped her soften, connect, and respond differently—ultimately increasing her ability to be with what is.Listen and learn:How stressors like heat, hunger, and poor sleep reduce your capacity and increase irritationWhy the “story” you tell can turn a small incident into a bigger threat. How separating from others fuels annoyance—and connection can shift itSuggested Next Episode:You can also enjoy Diana's related Bonus Meditation: AnnoyanceRelated ResourcesGet enhanced show notes for this episodeOrder my book, Wise Effort: How to Focus Your Genius Energy on What Matters Most, and receive special bonus gifts.Want to become more psychologically flexible? In this eye‑opening episode of the 247 Real Talk Podcast, your host dives into Steven Furtick's powerful reminder: “Sometimes what we call interruptions are really invitations.” In a world addicted to hustle, productivity, and packed schedules, we'll explore how easily we label people, problems, and unexpected moments as “in the way”—when they might actually be the very moments that could change our lives. We'll talk about:How our obsession with control and efficiency makes us miss emotional, spiritual, and relational invitations hiding inside “inconveniences”Real‑life examples of interruptions that became invitations to grow, to help, to heal, or to shift directionPractical ways to pause in the moment and ask, “What might I be invited into here?” instead of just trying to get back to your planIf you're tired, easily irritated, or feel like life keeps “getting in the way,” this conversation will challenge the way you see your day, your relationships, and even your setbacks. We all have stories worth telling. Yet most of us decide ours aren’t interesting enough, important enough, or universal enough to share. In this episode, I’m joined by Daniel Coyle to explore why that instinct is usually wrong. Daniel is the bestselling author of The Talent Code, The Culture Code, and his latest book Flourish. Together, we unpack how Daniel finds and constructs stories that truly pull people in, including the ingredients that make a story compelling and the simple techniques anyone can use to tell better stories. We also dive into the small, powerful questions that move conversations beyond surface-level small talk, how to build genuine local community through what Daniel calls “yellow doors”, what leaders can learn from a makeshift building at MIT that became an innovation hotspot, and why change so often feels slow before it suddenly blooms. If you care about deeper connection, stronger culture, and asking better questions, this conversation will give you plenty to think about. Daniel and I discuss: The simple structure behind every compelling story Why great stories begin with a question and how to construct tension and mystery How to “sandpaper” your stories by removing everything that isn’t essential The reflective practice Daniel uses to zoom out and see the shape of his life The specific questions that deepen connection How to build local community through small habits, daily encounters, and noticing “yellow doors” Why annoyance is the price of community The difference between complicated and complex systems, and why that matters for navigating change What leaders can learn from Building 20 at MIT about agency and the “rule of the beautiful mess” Why change often happens slowly, then in a surprising bloom A simple 30-second “council” exercise to reconnect with meaning Key quotes “Annoyance is the price of community.” “Life is not a productivity contest. It’s a moments thing.” Connect with Daniel Coyle on X (Twitter), and LinkedIn and his website, and check out his latest book Flourish. My latest book The Health Habit is out now. In this compelling episode, Dr. David Puder sits down with New York Times bestselling author and psychotherapist Daniel Smith to explore his latest book, Hard Feelings: Finding the Wisdom in Our Darkest Emotions. They dive deep into the often-avoided world of "negative" emotions like shame, envy, and annoyance, revealing how these hard feelings carry profound wisdom rather than being obstacles to banish. Drawing from Smith's personal experiences, they discuss double binds, screen memories, dissociation, and the freezing response that shame can trigger. The conversation also covers annoyance as a temperament trait tied to highly sensitive, hyperpermeable nervous systems, noise sensitivity struggles, links to traits like idealization/devaluation in borderline patterns, and much more. Send us a textGrief doesn't start with a story—it starts as a feeling that we rush to explain. From three quiet days of no notifications to a New Year's dance-floor synchronicity, we unpack how loss, sweetness, envy, and scarcity rise first, and how the mind stitches them to convenient narratives. When we flip that script and simply watch, patterns surface on their own: resistance to being seen, the tug of fantasy, the fear of not-enough. The relief isn't in fixing feelings—it's in relaxed, honest attention. We go deep on relationships as living mirrors. Instead of making a confession to the person we think caused our pain, we explore a gentler path: stop, look, listen. Choose who you're looking with—ego or Spirit—and let the next step reveal itself. Money becomes a neutral symbol, not a verdict. Scarcity loosens when trust grows. Timelines and choices feel less linear and more like threads you can stop gripping. And yes, we talk sex: why fantasy numbs presence, how grasping narrows awareness, and how real connection expands when we drop performance and return to the senses. Annoyance, “robotic” moments, missed strokes—all become invitations to laugh, breathe, and reconnect. This isn't bypass. It's practical forgiveness that you can use anywhere: at a coffee shop when the machine breaks, in bed when the mind chases an outcome, or when envy whispers that someone else got the life you wanted. We share the “succubus” dynamic that often hijacks fresh openings, and how remembering a single purpose—letting Spirit repurpose everything—keeps you anchored. The takeaway is simple and bold: every upset is a doorway. Relax, notice, forgive, and let joy return. If this lands, subscribe, share with a friend who needs it, and leave a review telling us which pattern you're ready to retire.Support the show

This week, we are revisiting a previously aired episode. Scott recently had a situation where he lost his cool with his toddler. In this episode, Jess and Scott unpack what happened and how he could do things differently next time by setting himself up for success as a highly sensitive person. They discuss what it means to be highly sensitive, from noticing subtle textures and needing things a certain way to being more emotionally attuned. Scott shares his own challenges staying calm as a highly sensitive parent, especially when his sensory cup is full.Jess offers practical tips for coping as a highly sensitive parent, like taking sensory breaks, setting boundaries, and having compassion for your unique needs. She emphasizes that there's nothing wrong with being a sensitive person, and learning to work with your sensitivity (or your partner's or child's sensitivity) comes with many beautiful gifts. Through a thoughtful and, at times, humorous discussion, Scott and Jess model how partners can talk through triggering parenting moments to problem-solve together. Listeners will gain insights into the highly sensitive parent experience and leave with new strategies to try. This episode was originally released on 7/8/2024.Get 10% OFF parenting courses and kids' printable activities at Nurtured First using the code ROBOTUNICORN.We'd love to hear from you! It might be December, but it's wedding season on Charm Scene! Charming guest Carlos Rivera helps us plan the perfect wedding in this week's fully improvised musical, with brooding brides, massive monologues, and aunt-ish ants! Will anyone find love?
