On today's episode, we discuss the final ruling from the NFL that Deshaun Watson will be suspended 11 games and fined $5 million for sexually assaulting and harassing 30+ women. We discuss how this will be the final measure of accountability for Watson, legally or from the NFL. We also revisit stories from victims of Watson's sexually predatory behavior, as detailed in reporting by Jenny Vrentas of Sports Illustrated and the New York Times, HBO Real Sports, Court Depositions, and the verdict by Sue L Robinson. Finally, how will a sports story of a generation impact the next generation's fight for women's rights. Conor and Gary welcome back Jenny Vrentas of the New York Times to delve into all things Deshaun Watson once again. A discussion of why Sue Robinson's factual determinations in her ruling are much more significant than the number of games she suggested for a suspension, how the door was flung open for the NFL to determine its own punishment, and how all of it should force the NFL to confront some of its outdated stances (and terminology) regarding sexual violence. Plus, what's next as the NFL moves forward with its appeal and Watson continues to show no remorse for his actions. Then, a look at the relatively light punishment for owner Stephen Ross and the Dolphins as the NFL gets them on tampering charges—and, in a way, gets them on tanking charges but decides Ross was just joking. Richie McCormack was joined by the New York Times' Jenny Vrentas to discuss Deshaun Watson on Thursday's Off The Ball. The Cleveland Browns QB was alleged to have engaged in sexually coercive and lewd behavior toward women he hired for massages and was this week given recently a six-game ban from the NFL.
On today's episode, we discuss Deshaun Watson's settlement of 3 more civil lawsuits, and revisit the accusations brought about against him by the victims of his sexually predatory behavior. Then, we discuss the NFL's decision to only use 4 cases of Watson's assault in their arbitration, and the Deshaun Watson Suspension Ruling by Sue L Robinson to give Watson a 6 game suspension based on those 4 cases. Also, the NFL could've let Watson and the Browns get away with all their behavior, and it feels like they did. We detail new reporting done in the Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel Episode this week, and the stories of Ashley Solis and Kyla Hayes that were detailed in this story. We also talk about new information presented to me about the nature of some of these women's lawsuits, and the trauma and fear of having to engage with a powerful person again after they exhibit sexually predatory behavior. We also discuss the NFL acting as an accountability measure for powerful people, and the fact they can either let Watson and the Browns get away with their behavior or not. In a very special episode of The MMQB NFL Podcast, Conor and Gary welcome Jenny Vrentas back to the show to cover a number of topics, starting with the investigation into the Raiders by Jenny and the team at the New York Times. Why is that franchise seemingly run like a disorganized mom-and-pop store rather than a billion-dollar enterprise? Why has there been so much turnover among their front-office leadership? And what would you do if Jon Gruden burst into your office to tell you you're doing a great job via football metaphors? Then, a discussion of tanking in the NFL in light of Conor and Gary's recent piece into the NFL's investigation into the Browns and their—to put it kindly—unique approach to the 2016 and '17 seasons. Plus, Jenny takes on the hit sensation, More Than Four But Fewer Than Six Questions… is she up to the task? (Of course she is.) Have a comment, critique or question for a future mailbag? We're doing another Deshaun Watson episode because it's an incredibly important story that goes beyond football. And, we're doing it now because, on Friday, Watson was formally introduced as the Browns' new quarterback, in a press conference that provided few direct answers. That made this show the perfect time to bring New York Times reporter, former MMQB podcaster and all-around wonderful person Jenny Vrentas back for a guest appearance, seeing as she has led the way on Watson reporting throughout the last year. First, a discussion of what was—and, in some cases, wasn't—said in Friday's press conference. And, in light of the fact that Watson repeatedly proclaimed that he had never disrespected a woman, a look back at the independently reported information in Jenny's work over the past year, which suggests otherwise. Plus, what it means that Watson was not indicted by a second grand jury in Texas, and a larger discussion of cases of sexaul violence in the criminal justice system. The penultimate Sunday of the NFL regular season was the strangest Sunday of the NFL regular season, and nothing was more unusual than Antonio Brown walking out of MetLife Stadium during the third quarter of the Bucs-Jets game. Jenny, Conor and Gary discuss how we arrived at this point with Brown, how the Bucs could possibly justify bringing him in, defending some of his indefensible actions, then cutting him loose after what was a relatively minor incident compared to the rest of his history. What all of it says about Brown, the Bucs' organization and the way the NFL handles players. There was also plenty to talk about on the field, including Joe Burrow's heroic performance in the Bengals' division-clinching win over the Chiefs, the Cardinals defense rekindling concerns over Dak Prescott's late-season performance, the Rams' uneven win in Baltimore, the Raiders' persistence in Indy, the Dolphins' meltdown in Nashville, and the good and bad of Trey Lance's second career start.
