Deshaun Watson spoke for the first time since returning from his 11-game suspension on Thursday. However, the Browns quarterback kept all of his responses focused on the field and not on the last three months. “First off, I just want to say I am excited to be back," Watson said in his first public comments since Aug. 18. "I am excited to be back around my teammates. I also want to thank the Browns organization, the ownership, my teammates in that locker room and all of the coaching staff for all of the support that they had for me, especially my time away. … I also want to thank all of the Cleveland fans and the City of Cleveland for embracing me but also helping me adapt to the community. It has been awesome and it has been great being out, going to dinners and to social places being able to hang out with some of the fans and interact with them. "I also just want to thank everyone that has been sending out some positive energy towards my way. I understand you guys have a lot of questions, but with my legal team and my clinical team, there is only football questions that I can really address at this time."The personal conduct policy suspension stemmed from allegations through the legal system by more than two dozen women of sexual assault and sexual misconduct during massage appointments. A total of 26 lawsuits — 23 of which have been settled — were filed against Watson, all of them involving incidents that occurred in 2020 and early 2021 while he was still the quarterback of the Houston Texans. One lawsuit was dropped shortly after being filed in March 2021. Watson last talked to the media on the same day he and the NFL reached a settlement on his suspension length. Part of that agreement included going through a clinical evaluation, and then to follow any advised treatment. Watson would not answer the question when he was asked what he learned about himself through the treatment process. He also dodged a question about his message to those who don't believe he should be the face of a franchise in light of the allegations against him.Watson was originally handed a six-game suspension on Aug. 1 by disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson. That suspension would've made his return to the field the Browns' Oct. 23 trip to Baltimore. The NFL appealed that suspension to commissioner Roger Goodell, who appointed former New Jersey attorney general Peter C. Harvey to hear the appeal. Before Harvey issued a ruling, though, the two sides came to a settlement of 11 games. The fact the settlement made Watson's return to Houston also his return to the field has been something that many have found odd. He reiterated what he had said at the time of the settlement, which is that he left the process in the hands of his advisers and didn't have a specific date or opponent in mind for his comeback. Now, the offense that Brissett led to those heights is handed over to a player who, when he last played nearly two years ago, was considered among the game's best quarterbacks. However, it'll be exactly 700 days since the last time Watson played a regular-season game, meaning there's been plenty of time for rust to accumulate. The only game action of any kind Watson has had since Jan. 3, 2021, was in the Browns' preseason opener at Jacksonville on Aug. 12. He played three series that night, completing 1 of 5 passes for 7 yards. Watson has been practicing with the Browns since Nov. 16. That's not the same, though, as playing in games, which is why he knows questions about rust are inevitable. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

NCAA – Big Ten – AP sources: ESPN out of Big Ten TV rights negotiations The Big Ten’s next television contracts will not include a deal with ESPN. Two people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press that the Big Ten was looking for a seven-year deal worth $380 million per year from ESPN, and the network declined. The people spoke to The AP on condition of anonymity because the negotiations were not being made public. Sports Business Journal first reported that ESPN was out of the Big Ten negotiations and CBS and NBC were likely to land pieces of the conference’s rights. ESPN has held television rights for the Big Ten since the mid-1980s. The network has shared Big Ten rights with Fox in the latest contract. Fox will remain the primary rights holder. He was put on the 10-day injured list between games of the twinbill. Anderson was injured on a check swing during his last at-bat on Saturday night at Texas. He will have surgery on Thursday in Chicago. The 29-year-old Anderson is hitting .301 for the playoff-contending White Sox. He missed the opener while finishing up a two-game suspension for making contact with an umpire. Nationals 6, Cubs 5 – Meneses hits 2-run HR in 8th as Nationals beat Cubs 6-5 Joey Meneses hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning, Keibert Ruiz went deep twice and the Washington Nationals regrouped after blowing a three-run lead, beating the Chicago Cubs 6-5 to snap a six-game losing streak. The Nationals were rolling along with a 4-1 lead, thanks to Ruiz’s solo drive in the second and three-run shot in the fourth against Marcus Stroman. Chicago scored four in the seventh to go up 5-4, capped by RBI singles by newcomer Franmil Reyes and Nico Hoerner against Kyle Finnegan. But the Nationals regrouped. Meneses came through against Mark Leiter Jr. in the eighth, after Maikel Franco singled with one out and Yadiel Hernandez struck out. Jury selection begins in U.S. District Court on Wednesday in the invasion of privacy case. The county has argued that the photos, which were ordered deleted, have never been in the media, on the internet or otherwise publicly disseminated. Bryant is seeking unspecified millions because she fears the photos may eventually surface. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Seattle Storm 111, Chicago Sky 100 Storms 111, Sky 100 – Storm set WNBA record with 37 assists, beat Sky 111-100 Breanna Stewart had 25 points and nine rebounds, Gabby Williams added 21 points and seven assists, and the Seattle Storm set a WNBA record with 37 assists in a 111-100 victory over the Chicago Sky. Seattle also set a franchise record for scoring in any half with 66 first-half points, but the Storm only led by 11 points after Chicago closed on a 13-4 run. The 121 combined first-half points were the most in a first half this season in the WNBA. Seattle led by as many as 22 points in the second half and hit the century mark with 4:50 left in the fourth. Despite the loss, Chicago is still in the driver’s seat to earn the No. 1 seed in the playoff. WNBA – Veteran emissary Richardson hopeful for Griner, Whelan swap Bill Richardson, the former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a frequent emissary in hostage negotiations, says he’s hopeful about the chances of a two-for-two prisoner swap that could result in the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan. Richardson said in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday that in cases like this it’s “proportional.” Richardson traveled to Russia ahead of the release by Moscow of Marine veteran Trevor Reed in an April prisoner swap. He declined to discuss the current status of negotiations over Griner or Whelan or to explain what role he may be playing in the talks. NFL – Bears star LB Smith requests trade after breakdown in talks Chicago Bears star linebacker Roquan Smith is requesting a trade, saying the team hasn’t negotiated in good faith for a contract extension. Smith doesn’t have an agent. He wrote Tuesday in a statement that he has “officially” asked to be dealt and that it was “deeply painful.” He said he has been trying to negotiate an extension since April and accused the team of trying to take advantage of him. Smith was second-team All-Pro in 2020 and 2021. He is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie contract. General manager Ryan Poles says he will not honor the request and will try to negotiate a deal with him. NFL – Goodell: NFL appeal of Watson suspension ‘right thing to do’ NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says he feels the league needed to keep pushing for a year-long suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson because of his “egregious” and “predatory behavior” toward women. Goodell was addressing the league’s decision to appeal a six-game suspension given to Watson by Sue L. Robinson, a former federal judge appointed by the NFL and NFL Players Association as an independent league disciplinary officer. Robinson found Watson violated the league’s conduct policy after he was accused by two dozen women of sexual assault or harassment while he played for Houston. NFL/USFL – NFL teams tapping USFL veterans for help in training camp Terrell Bonds owes his latest NFL opportunity to the revived USFL where he played 10 games this spring. He’s got lots of company as the NFL starts its first week of preseason games Thursday night. Bonds is among at least 41 players from the USFL’s inaugural season signed by 26 of the NFL’s 32 teams. Wide receiver has been the most popular position followed by cornerback as NFL teams look for help during training camps. Bonds is with the Tennessee Titans after playing in college at Tennessee State. He used to talk of playing for the Titans. Bonds says he’s thankful to see it actually come true. Golf – PGA/LIV – Federal judge denies LIV golfers bid for PGA Tour postseason A federal judge in California has ruled three golfers who joined Saudi-backed LIV Golf will not be able to compete in the PGA Tour’s postseason. U.S. District Judge Beth Labson Freeman made her decision in San Jose after attorneys for the sides each spoke about an hour. The golfers were seeking a temporary restraining order, which Freeman denied. Talor Gooch, Matt Jones and Hudson Swafford claimed they should be able to play where they want to. They are among 10 players who filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour last week — including Phil Mickelson. NHL – Rangers name defenseman Jacob Trouba captain The New York Rangers have named defenseman and former Michigan Wolverine Jacob Trouba captain. Rangers president and general manager Chris Drury announced the selection in a news release and the team later held a news conference with Drury, Trouba and coach Gerard Gallant at their practice facility in Greenburgh, New York. Trouba has totaled 20 goals and 58 assists in 189 games over the last three seasons with the Rangers. The 28-year-old, an alternate captain the last two seasons, is the 28th captain in franchise history, and the first since Ryan McDonagh was traded in 2018. Trouba is one of three defensemen currently serving as captain in the NHL, joining Jared Spurgeon (Minnesota) and Roman Josi (Nashville). Tennis – Serena Williams says ‘countdown has begun’ to retirement Serena Williams says she is preparing to step away from tennis after winning 23 Grand Slam titles, turning her focus to having another child and her business interests. “I’m turning 41 this month, and something’s got to give,” Williams wrote in an essay released Tuesday by Vogue magazine. Williams said she does not like the word retirement and prefers to think of this stage of her life as “evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.” Williams is playing this week in Toronto, at a hard-court tournament that leads into the U.S. Open. The year’s last Grand Slam event begins in New York on Aug. 29. Tennis – Serena Williams’ legacy involves plenty of wins, plenty else Serena Williams is famous for her 23 Grand Slam singles titles. That is more than any other tennis player accumulated in the sport’s professional era. But mere numbers can’t capture everything Williams has represented during a distinguished career that began when she was a teenager in the 1990s and is remarkable for not just the successes but also the longevity, including a record 10 major championships after turning 30. What Williams has done without a racket in her hand is also rather noteworthy, whether it was her off-court interests or her stands on key issues in tennis and society at large. LLWS – Beaned Little League batter rises to console upset pitcher A Little League batter rose from a beaning to console the upset pitcher in a dramatic scene at a Little League regional tournament game in Waco, Texas. Pearland, Texas, righthander Kaiden Shelton was facing Tulsa, Oklahoma, batter Isaiah Jarvis Tuesday when an 0-2 pitch got away from him, striking Jarvis in the helmet. The league says the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs will play a two-game series on June 24 and 25, 2023, at London Stadium. The NL Central rivals were supposed to play in London in 2020, but the games were canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. MLB last played in London in 2019, when the New York Yankees swept a two-game set against the Boston Red Sox in June at London Stadium. Those were also MLB’s first regular-season games played in Europe. MLB – Miguel Cabrera says he’s uncertain about playing in 2023 Miguel Cabrera says he may end his likely Hall of Fame career at the end of this season. The 39-year-old Detroit Tigers star mused on the subject Thursday amid a slump through the dog days of summer. Cabrera joined the 3,000-hit/500-homer club earlier in the season, and was hitting .308 as recently as July 8. Plagued by lower-body problems that have been a constant issue in recent seasons, he entered Thursday hitting .132 with three extra-base hits in his last 20 games. The Tigers came into the season as fringe contenders after a strong finish in 2021, but they have staggered to a 42-65 record with the worst offense in baseball. NFL – National Football League Preseason – Hall of Fame Game Last Night Las Vegas Raiders 28, Jacksonville Jaguars 11 Raiders 28, Jaguars 11 – Raiders give McDaniels happy homecoming, beat Jaguars 27-11 Josh Jacobs and rookie Zamir White ran well on a rain-soaked field and the Raiders routed Jacksonville 27-11 in the Hall of Fame game Thursday night, spoiling coach Doug Pederson’s first game with the Jaguars. Derek Carr, the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, and Davante Adams, the All-Pro receiver acquired in blockbuster trade with Green Bay, were among many starters who sat out for both teams. Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence wore a backward cap on the sideline while third-string quarterback Jake Luton was started. NFL – Former attorney general to hear appeal of Watson suspension NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has chosen former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey to hear the appeal of the six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson has been suspended by independent disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson, who concluded he violated the league’s personal conduct policy after being accused of sexual misconduct by two dozen women in Texas. The league wants further discipline and appealed Robinson’s ruling. The appeal gave the power back to Goodell to hand down punishment but he instead chose Harvey to hear the appeal. NFL – Attorney urges Goodell to ‘do the right thing’ on Watson A lawyer representing two dozen women who have accused Deshaun Watson of sexual assault or harassment says NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has a chance to “do the right thing” now that the league has appealed a six-game suspension for the quarterback. Attorney Tony Buzbee says “Every victim of sexual assault is watching Roger Goodell and the NFL right now.” The NFL’s appeal of an independent disciplinary officer’s decision gives Goodell or someone he designates the authority to increase Watson’s penalty. Goodell has named former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey as his designee to hear the appeal. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Washington Mystics at Chicago Sky, 8:00 p.m. WNBA – WNBA’s Griner convicted at drug trial, sentenced to 9 years A judge in Russia convicted American basketball star Brittney Griner of drug possession and smuggling. She was sentenced to nine years in prison in a politically charged case that could lead to a high-stakes prisoner exchange between Washington and Moscow. Griner showed little emotion to the sentence but her lawyers said later she was “very upset, very stressed.” U.S. President Joe Biden denounced as “unacceptable” the verdict and sentence, which came amid soaring tensions between the U.S. and Russia over Ukraine. Griner had told the court she had no intention to break the law by bringing vape cartridges with cannabis oil when she flew to Moscow to play basketball in the city of Yekaterinburg. WNBA – Brittney Griner recognized with WNBA moment of silence Following Brittney Griner’s sentencing in Russia to nine years in prison Thursday, WNBA players, coaches and fans locked arms and tried to send the American basketball star strength during a moment of silence. Before the Connecticut Sun beat the Phoenix Mercury 77-64, players from both teams met at midcourt and silently bowed their heads for 42 seconds — a nod to Griner’s jersey number with the Mercury. Robinson's decision on Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson; why the decision seems wholly inconsistent with Robinson's own findings; the narrow definition of "violent" as defined in the decision; Manza Young's argument that the decision “underscores to many of us, once again, how some people, even other women, perceive women as disposable, especially if they're Black or brown or work in the service industry”; Watson being cheered at Browns camp; the NFL's decision on the discipline imposed to the Dolphins for violations of NFL policies relating to the integrity of the game, and more. Finn and Deitsch discusses the coverage Bill Russell's passing; the powerful words of Karen Russell, Bill's daughter; Charles Barkley's flirtation with LIV Golf; Amazon hiring Dude Perfect for an alternate telecast; whether there is a definitive NFL program or pregame show; how the league-owned networks cover challenging stories and more. Jose Miranda had three RBIs for the Twins, who maintained their one-game lead in the AL Central over Cleveland. Miranda hit a tying, two-run single in the eighth. He added an RBI single in the 10th before Urshela’s big hit. Tigers starter Tarik Skubal was pulled following five scoreless innings with left arm fatigue. Royals 2, White Sox 1 – Perez, Merrifield homer, Royals edge White Sox 2-1 Salvador Perez and Whit Merrifield hit solo home runs, Daniel Lynch took a shutout into the sixth inning in his return from the injured list and the Kansas City Royals edged the Chicago White Sox 2-1 for their second straight win. Perez launched a monster blast for the second straight game and his third homer in four contests after missing 31 games with a left thumb injury and surgery. Merrifield’s drive into the left-field bullpen off Michael Kopech in the sixth might have been his last with Kansas City. A two-time All Star in seven seasons with the Royals, the second baseman has been the subject of trade rumors heading into Tuesday’s deadline. The 32-year-old Grossman is making $5 million this year and can become a free agent after the season. He has struggled for the out-of-contention Tigers with a .205 batting average, 13 doubles, two home runs and 23 RBIs in 83 games. The switch-hitter has started 43 games in left field and 31 games in right. Grossman set career highs in 2021 in his Tigers debut with 23 home runs and 156 games. MLB – White Sox acquire lefty reliever Diekman from Red Sox The Chicago White Sox have acquired left-handed reliever Jake Diekman from the Boston Red Sox for catcher Reese McGuire and a player to be named or cash. Later Monday, the Red Sox acquired left fielder Tommy Pham in a trade with Cincinnati in exchange for a player to be named later or cash. The 35-year-old Diekman is 5-1 with a 4.23 ERA in 44 appearances this season. The 6-foot-4 Diekman is particularly tough on left-handed batters, holding them to a .188 average this season. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Dallas Wings at Chicago Sky, 9:00 p.m. WNBA – Brittney Griner’s trial resumes amid intensified diplomacy Since Brittney Griner last appeared in her trial for cannabis possession, the question of her fate has expanded from a cramped courtroom on Moscow’s outskirts to the highest level of Russia-U.S. diplomacy. The WNBA star and two-time Olympic gold medalist is to return to court on Tuesday. That is a month after the beginning of the trial in which she could face 10 years in prison if convicted. As the trial has progressed, the Biden administration has faced rising calls for action to win her release. In an extraordinary move, Secretary of State Antony Blinken last week spoke to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, urging him to accept a deal under which Griner and Paul Whelan, an American imprisoned in Russia on an espionage conviction, would go free. NFL – Browns QB Watson suspended 6 games, NFL weighs appeal Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was suspended for six games after being accused by two dozen women in Texas of sexual misconduct during massage treatments, in what a disciplinary officer said was behavior “more egregious than any before reviewed by the NFL.” The punishment handed out by the game’s disciplinary officer, former federal judge Sue L. Robinson, fell well short of what the NFL had asked for: an open-ended suspension of at least a year for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. Watson, who played for four seasons with Houston before being traded to Cleveland in March, recently settled 23 of 24 lawsuits filed by women alleging sexual harassment and assault during the treatments in 2020 and 2021. NFL – Watson discipline didn’t require legal charges Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns found out the severity of the quarterback’s punishment when he was suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson made the decision after the NFL pushed for an indefinite suspension of at least one year and Watson’s legal team argued for no suspension during a three-day hearing. A player doesn’t have to be convicted or even charged with a crime to be disciplined for conduct detrimental to the league, per the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Players’ Association. Ezekiel Elliott, Ben Roethlisberger, Jameis Winston and Kareem Hunt are among players who have received suspensions despite not being charged criminally. NFL – Fans debate Watson’s 6-game suspension for assault claims Football fans are debating the six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. The reaction was mixed even among Browns fans who hope Watson can be a franchise quarterback. Touchdown Browns Backers Club President Rhonda Whitelock says some club members have told her they won’t watch the Browns anymore. She says other members don’t believe the women who have accused Watson of sexual misconduct during massage treatments. NFL – Lions giving Harris chance to earn starting cornerback spot Under a previous head coach and front office, Detroit drafted Will Harris in 2019 to play safety. Now, the Lions are giving him a chance to be a much-needed cornerback in coach Dan Campbell’s second season. Harris’ move to cornerback started in the middle of last season, when injuries at the position forced Lions coaches to adjust on the fly. In an effort to narrow his focus, the Lions are making Harris a full-time outside cornerback this year, and they’re giving him a shot at the starting job opposite Amani Orurwariye. NFL – Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Arizona QB Kyler Murray test positive for COVID-19 Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has tested positive for COVID-19, the team announced. The Seahawks issued a statement about an hour before their fifth training camp practice started. The team said Carroll — who is fully vaccinated — tested positive on Sunday and is experiencing mild symptoms and is remaining at home. Carroll intends on participating in team meetings virtually until he is cleared to rejoin the team. Carroll is the oldest coach in the league and will turn 71 in mid-September.  Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray has tested positive for COVID-19. The two-time Pro Bowl selection tested positive on Sunday. Coach Kliff Kingsbury said on Monday that Murray was experiencing “minor” symptoms. Tim Anderson and Andrew Vaughn each had two hits off Lynch, but the White Sox slipped back to .500 (51-51). The coach added that Murray will miss a minimum of five days. Murray also sat out Saturday’s practice with a sore right wrist. Kingsbury said that injury was “getting better.” Golf – LIV – Norman says Tiger Woods turned down $700-800M Saudi offer Tiger Woods turned down a Saudi offer Greg Norman says was in the neighborhood of $700 million to $800 million. Norman confirmed a figure he previously told the Washington Post. Norman was speaking to Fox News’ Tucker Carlson for an interview aired Monday night. The interview took place Sunday at Trump National in Bedminster, New Jersey. That’s where the third LIV Golf Invitational was held. Norman says he wasn’t the CEO of LIV Golf when Woods got the offer. Woods has spoken out against the Saudi-funded league. He says players who sign are turning their backs on the PGA Tour. The decision about discipline for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson decision is in, with former federal judge Sue L. Robinson issuing a six-game suspension. Robinson found that Watson committed sexual assault against multiple victims, but didn't go as far as issuing an indefinite suspension based on what she called the "nonviolent" nature of the conduct, the NFL's history of less severe penalties, and what she determined to be a lack of notice for departing from that precedent to issue a harsher penalty. 3News digital anchor Stephanie Haney and 3News sports analyst Ben Axelrod break down the news in a special edition of 3News Now and also talk about what comes next for Watson, including the potential appeal process. NFL – AP sources: Decision in Watson discipline case coming Monday A decision on discipline for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson following accusations of sexual misconduct is coming Monday. Two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that retired judge Sue L. Robinson has informed the NFL and the NFL Players’ Association she’s ready to issue a ruling on Watson’s disciplinary hearing that concluded a month ago. They spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the discussions are private. Four lawsuits remain pending and the attorney representing the women has said he hopes to take them to trial sometime next spring. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday San Diego Padres 6, Detroit Tigers 4 – 10 Innings Chicago White Sox 2, Colorado Rockies 1 Chicago Cubs 4, Pittsburgh Pirates 2 Padres 6, Tigers 4 – F/10 – Alfaro gets key 10th-inning hit as Padres beat Tigers 6-4 Jorge Alfaro capped San Diego’s three-run 10th inning with a two-run single, and the Padres beat the Detroit Tigers 6-4. Luke Voit finished with three RBIs for San Diego after he was hit by a bases-loaded pitch from All-Star Gregory Soto in the 10th. After Matthew Batten struck out swinging for the second out, Alfaro drove in Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado with a single to right. Detroit got one back on Jeimer Candelario’s RBI double in the bottom half. But Nick Martinez retired Willi Castro on a fly ball to center, earning his fourth save. White Sox 2, Rockies 1 – Kopech stars as Chicago White Sox top Colorado Rockies 2-1 Michael Kopech pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, and the Chicago White Sox topped the Colorado Rockies 2-1. Yasmani Grandal had three hits in Chicago’s third straight win. Yoán Moncada doubled home Adam Engel in the seventh. All-Star closer Liam Hendriks worked a rocky ninth for his 19th save, surrendering Ryan McMahon’s leadoff homer. Colorado wasted a stellar performance by Germán Márquez, who permitted one run and seven hits in six innings. Cubs 4, Pirates 2 – Contreras salutes fans, helps Cubs win 6th in row, top Bucs Willson Contreras drew a standing ovation in perhaps his last home game at Wrigley Field, then keyed an early burst as the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 for their season-high sixth straight win. Contreras, one of three members left from the 2016 World Series title team, tipped his cap after being cheered at the plate his first time up. He hit a soft single in a three-run first inning. Contreras, an All-Star catcher who can become a free agent after this season, has acknowledged this might be his last homestand as a member of the Cubs before the Aug. 2 trade deadline. He saluted the fans with a fist in his last at-bat in the seventh. Representatives from the Blue Jays and White Sox were in attendance. Today San Diego (Darvish 9-4) at Detroit (Skubal 7-8), 1:10 p.m.                   WSJM/WCSY 12:50 Chicago White Sox (Giolito 6-6) at Colorado (Senzatela 3-5), 3:10 p.m. Cubs are off WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Las Vegas Aces 93, Chicago Sky 83 Aces 93, Sky 83 – Plum’s 3’s lead Aces over Sky in WNBA Commissioner’s Cup. Kelsey Plum scored 12 of her 24 points in the first quarter as the Las Vegas Aces raced to an early 23-point lead, then held on for a 93-83 victory over the Chicago Sky to win the second WNBA Commissioner’s Cup championship mid-season tournament. Plum, who won the All-Star MVP in Chicago a few weeks ago, hit six of her nine 3-point attempts. Chelsea Gray had 19 points — including nine pivotal ones in the third quarter — and earned MVP of the game. A’ja Wilson had 17 points, 17 rebounds and six blocks as the Aces dominated early, then repelled several Sky runs in the second half. Jackie Young had 18 points. Candace Parker led Chicago with 20 points and Kahleah Copper and Emma Meesseman each added 18. WNBA – Russian expert at Griner’s trial discusses medical cannabis The latest Russian court hearing in the drug trial of American basketball star Brittney Griner has focused on testimony about countries that regard cannabis as having legitimate medicinal uses. Griner has acknowledged she was carrying vape canisters containing cannabis oil when she was arrested in February at a Moscow airport. But she contends she had no criminal intent and that the canisters ended up in her luggage inadvertently because of hasty packing. Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who plays for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of transporting drugs. Griner’s trial began July 1. Tuesday’s session lasted about 90 minutes before the case was adjourned until Wednesday. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Bold, aggressive Big Ten leaves door open for more expansion Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren says the conference will be bold and aggressive as college sports goes through a period of sweeping change. He left the door open for more expansion after the league added Southern California and UCLA for the 2024 season. Warren says the future could involve more expansion. He says the Big Ten will be strategic and look for schools that add value to the conference. The Big Ten’s big moves came less than a year after Texas and Oklahoma announced plans to leave the Big 12 for the SEC. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten coaches relying heavily on revamped defenses Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has a new defensive coordinator for the second straight year. Ohio State coach Ryan Day also made a coaching change. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz and seemingly everyone else in the Big Ten need to plug defensive holes, too. Relying on revamped defenses has become a trend in the traditionally rough-and-tumble Big Ten. It often becomes the definitive line between success or failure. NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten’s expansion further damages Rose Bowl’s status Former Wisconsin football coach Barry Alvarez says the Rose Bowl will always be important to the Big Ten, but making the College Football Playoff is the priority for today’s players. The future of the Rose Bowl as a showcase game, mostly featuring teams from Big Ten and Pac-12 on New Year’s Day, was already murky as the College Football Playoff creeps toward expansion. Now that the Big Ten has poached Southern California and UCLA from the Pac-12, it remains to be seen if the West Coast’s Power Five conference will still be an important part of the Rose Bowl. NCAAFB – Lakeshore grad suits up for Crimson Tide Athletes in Southwest Michigan are no strangers to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level, but it’s rare that they continue on at a Division 1 university, and even more rare when a local football player suits up for one of the top football teams in the nation.  Lakeshore’s Logan Mooney earned one of 16 preferred walk-on roster spots for the Alabama Crimson Tide.  Mooney, who just graduated from Lakeshore High School, played as a middle linebacker and quarterback for the Lancers team that went 7-4 last season. Mooney was named SMAC All-Conference as a linebacker with 73 tackles, 10 for loss, and 2 sacks.  Mooney is learning a new defensive position for Nick Saban’s squad, as Mooney is moving over to the strong safety position.  Alabama finished last season at 13-2 and lost to Georgia in the college football playoff championship game.  The Crimson Tide are currently ranked number 2 in the preseason AP college football poll and will open the season on Saturday September 3rd at home against Utah State.  Mooney’s Lakeshore Lancers open up the season on Thursday, August 25th at home against Zeeland West, which will be heard live on 97.5 Y-Country. NFL – NFL teams open camp with biggest question still unanswered Training camps opened across the NFL and the biggest offseason question remains unanswered. The Cleveland Browns still don’t know how many games they’ll be without Deshaun Watson, who is still waiting for retired judge Sue L. Robinson to issue a ruling following his disciplinary hearing that concluded nearly four weeks ago. The league and the NFL Players’ Association requested a decision by the start of training camp, according to a person familiar with the process who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the discussions are private. Robinson, who was jointly appointed by the league and the union, had no obligation to meet that deadline. Representatives are hopeful a decision comes this week. Bears’ Smith, Quinn report, unclear if they’ll practice Star linebacker Roquan Smith and defensive end Robert Quinn are on time for the Chicago Bears’ first training camp under general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. Whether they’ll choose to participate when practices begin Wednesday remains to be seen. The Bears could have a big issue on their hands if two of their best defensive players decide not to practice. Smith and Quinn could opt instead to “hold in” by simply attending meetings while not participating in on-field activities. Smith wants an extension as he enters the fifth and final season of his rookie deal, while the 32-year-old Quinn’s future with a rebuilding team is unclear. Poles said he hadn’t seen either player. But he was told they had reported. NASCAR – NASCAR slams McDowell and team for illegally modified part NASCAR has levied another round of massive penalties, this time against Michael McDowell and Front Row Motorsports, for illegal modifications discovered after McDowell’s sixth-place finish at Pocono Raceway. NASCAR fined crew chief Blake Harris $100,000 and suspended him for four races. McDowell was docked 100 driver points, and Front Row docked 100 owner points. If the No. 34 team wins one of the five remaining regular-season races to qualify for the playoffs, McDowell will be docked 10 playoff points. The penalty was issued for an illegal modification of a single source supplied part. Golf – LIV in New Jersey, PGA has more top-20 players in Detroit The Saudi-funded LIV Golf series is back in action in the United States, this time on a New Jersey course owned by former President Donald Trump. The rival league has added three more players in their 40s with Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson and Charles Howell III. The PGA Tour is holding its own this week. The Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit has Patrick Cantlay at No. 4 in the world. He’s among five players from the top 20 in the world at Detroit Golf Club. The LPGA Tour goes to Scotland for the first of two weeks. Jackie Robinson Museum opens after 14 years of planning The Jackie Robinson Museum has opened in Manhattan with a gala ceremony attended by the 100-year-old widow of the barrier-breaking ballplayer and two of his children. Rachel Robinson watched the half-hour outdoor ceremony from a wheelchair in the 80-degree heat, then cut a ribbon to cap a project launched in 2008. Her 72-year-old daughter, Sharon, also watched from a wheelchair and 70-year-old son David spoke to the crowd of about 200 sitting on folding chairs arrayed on a closed-off section of the major New York thoroughfare where the museum is located. It opens to the public on Sept. 5. Men abused by Ohio State doctor ask court to revive lawsuits Attorneys for some of the men who sued Ohio State University over decades-old sexual abuse by team doctor Richard Strauss argue a federal appeals court should overturn a judge’s dismissal and let the lawsuits continue. A three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments Tuesday. Ohio State’s lawyers contend the claims were years too late. They argue that the students knew enough that, legally speaking, they should have started looking into further recourse back then if the late doctor’s behavior and Ohio State’s inaction were as egregious as alleged. The plaintiffs argue the clock didn’t start until allegations came to light in 2018. Judge halts horse racing authority enforcement in La., W.Va. A federal judge says a national horse racing authority cannot enforce its rules in Louisiana and West Virginia while a lawsuit challenging the organization is in court. Western District of Louisiana Judge Terry Doughty in granting a preliminary injunction said the Horseracing Integrity & Safety Authority likely went beyond its bounds on three rules that went into place July 1. State and racing officials in those jurisdictions sued to prevent the new federal authority’s regulations from going into effect. HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus says the judge’s ruling does not question the organization’s constitutionality or validity. NFL will argue for ‘significant' suspension of Deshaun Watson? ImChrisDaDon1 ep136

The NFL will argue that Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson should receive a “significant” suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy, multiple people familiar with the case said Friday. The league “probably” will seek a suspension of one full season for Watson, a person on Watson's side of the case said Friday. A person familiar with the league's view of the case cautioned to be “careful” about specifying a precise length at this point for the suspension the NFL will seek. But that person also said: “Significant would be the proper term.” Watson faces 24 active civil lawsuits by women accusing him of sexual misconduct. The allegations include making inappropriate comments, exposing himself and forcing his penis on women's hands during massage therapy sessions. Watson and his attorney, Rusty Hardin, have denied the allegations. Two grand juries in Texas declined to charge Watson with a crime. The NFL is preparing to present the findings of its investigation to Sue L. Robinson, the former U.S. district judge who is the disciplinary officer jointly appointed by the league and the NFL Players Association under the conduct policy.
