Olympic middle-distance star and Massachusetts native Heather MacLean makes her debut on the show, ready to break down her latest success on the track.Heather, a Tokyo 2021 Olympic runner, started 2025 with a bang–winning the mile race at the Indoor Grand Prix in Boston in February, smashing a 4:23.32 while setting a meet record.Later that month, Heather ran at the Last Chance National Qualifier at BU, running a dazzling 4:17.01 mile, a new record for her. This makes her the fourth-fastest women indoor mile runner ever. Heather followed all of that up with a 1500m appearance at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, where she finished seventh with a time of 4:04.45.Heather's resume is sparkling to say the least: she came in third in the 2020 Trials to earn her spot in the 1,500m in Tokyo; she was a 2022 US Indoor 1,500m champion and 1,500m World Finalist; and has PRs of 3:58.3 in the outdoor 1,500m and 1:58.7 in the 800m. Heather, who is now a member of the New Balance Boston team run by coach Mark Coogan, grew up in Peabody, Massachusetts and ran for the University of Massachusetts. She holds the 800m, 1,000m, 1,500m women's records at the school, and became the first woman from UMass to earn NCAA D-1 All-American honors in cross country in 2017.In today's conversation, Heather walks me through her recent successful indoor season, how her self-awareness and self-belief have propelled her forward, what she wants to accomplish in the years to come, inside her training, and much more. I've looked up to Heather for years, so it was a pleasure to have the chance to speak with her and learn from her! “Overseeing your own health is so valuable – and we're at the cusp of it in America. We are giving people the information that can finally help themselves in a unique way.” - Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer   Did you know trillions of dollars are being poured into chronic conditions in America – and many of them are unknowingly rooted in glucose challenges or mismanagement? During today's show, Dr. Michelle Robin invites Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer to share his reasons for co-founding Signos – a CGM technology that shows how your body uniquely reacts to what you eat, plus other lifestyle factors such as stress patterns and sleep habits that are affecting your glucose levels. Sharam tells his personal journey of weight management issues growing up and why he finally figured out that glucose spikes and dips were causing more harm on the overall body than he realized. He explains how Signos technology works and some stories of people who have tried everything from diets to exercise, but the Signos CGM monitor is the first thing that has made them feel empowered to see what their bodies need on an individual level to reach their goals. Sharam also unpacks why glucose monitoring is not just for people who have diabetes, and why this can be a powerful tool in life to manage pain, weight management, increase energy, and even impact mental health. About Today's Guest:  Growing up in upstate New York, Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer fluctuated between obese, overweight, athletic, and back again before he founded Signos to tackle the obesity epidemic in America. Sharam is also the Board Director and Co-Founder at Onclusive, an Al software company to measure the impact of PR, as well as originally serving as the company's founding CEO. Prior to Onclusive, he was an entrepreneur in residence at Shasta Ventures focused on consumer internet and the social graph. Before joining Shasta, Sharam was a Venture Capitalist at Sierra Ventures and served on the Board at Makara (sold to RedHat) and TouchCommerce (sold to Nuance). Sharam began his career as an early employee at Appian (NASDAQ:APPN), a low-code software company. He graduated with honors with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Princeton University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He played NCAA D-1 ice hockey and lives with his family in California.   Mentioned in the Episode:  Signos website  What is Signos?  Dr. Georgia Nab's podcast  Signos is hiring

"Sara, would you be interested in playing NCAA D-1 basketball for us in NYC?" read an email I received one. My home was in a medieval town of 20,000 in Slovenia, I had just retired from playing basketball at the highest levels, and had no asporatins to ever live in the USA. I also could barely speak English at the time. 17 years later, I still live in New York where I now have my own family and my own business. So let's talk about how this almost did not happen! And, about leaps of faith, resistance, self-sabotage, struggle, and deep surrender.

One year after the immigration raids that shook Mississippi communities, the U.S. Attorney's Office issues indictments against processing plant management. Then, a Mississippi judge's opinion on qualified immunity scrutinizes a practice that has shielded law enforcement officers.Plus, member institutions of the NCAA's Division III won't be playing sports this fall. We talk to the A.D. of one of Mississippi's D-3 schools.Segment 1:One year ago today, agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided seven central Mississippi chicken processing plants, detaining over 600 undocumented workers. It was the largest single-state raid in American history. Now, the U.S. Attorney's office is holding management of those plants accountable through indictments against four plant executives. MPB's Desare Frazier talks with U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst.Segment 2:"Clarence Jamison wasn't jaywalking. He wasn't outside playing with a toy gun. He didn't look like a "suspicious person". He wasn't suspected of "selling loose, untaxed cigarettes". He wasn't suspected of passing a counterfeit $20 bill." Those are the first five lines of U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves' opinion upholding a claim of qualified immunity for officer Nick McClendon. Reeves gives 19 different examples of what Jamison, a Black man, wasn't doing when he was pulled over by McClendon - each example invoking the memory of other Black men and women whose lives were ended through excessive police force. Reeves further opined the "qualified immunity" doctrine operates like absolute immunity in real life. But based on legal precedent, Reeves was compelled to uphold the doctrine. Jarvis Dortch is the Executive Director of the Mississippi Chapter of the ACLU. He shares his thoughts on Reeve's opinion with our Kobee Vance.Segment 3:College sports in the NCAA's two lower levels won't take place this fall. On Wednesday the Presidents Councils for the governing body's Divisions II and III announced they would cancel fall championships for the 2020-2021 seasons. This decision means Mississippi's member schools like Mississippi College, Delta State, and Belhaven will have to re-imagine what their sports calendars will look like as they adjust plans to potentially play fall sports in the spring. Aaron Pelch is the Athletic Director of Millsaps College, a NCAA D-3 school. He says schools are awaiting guidance from the NCAA regarding what possibilities exist for fall sports. He shares his plans and reaction to the decision with us. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
