This show covers the new college football head coaches for the 2010 season. This was the year that Florida State finally pushed out Bobby Bowden, Notre Dame fired Charlie Weis, and USC watched Pete Carroll walk out the door to the Seahawks. What happened after that?* A messy “coach-in-waiting” situation in Tallahassee, as Bobby Bowden is finally pushed away and Jimbo Fisher steps up* Notre Dame goes for Brian Kelly after squandering a "decided schematic advantage” and firing Charlie Weis* Charlie Strong gets a new job at Louisville* Vanderbilt lives through one of the stranger mid-offseason changes in a while* Lane Kiffin arrives in Southern California, and Derek Dooley replaces him in Knoxville in a search that sure could have gone differently* A future senator heads to Siberia, err, Lubbock* Butch Jones takes on one of the hardest jobs in college football: living up to a high bar set by a string of his predecessorsThen it's CLASS SUPERLATIVES time, with the boys each naming their pick for the Ellis Johnson/Southern Miss Award, the Coaching Carousel Global Impact Award, and Hire of the Year.Scroll down in your feed to February 18, 2025 for the first episode in this series. Listen in NOW!
On this edition of the Mangia Cast, Bob Papa and Chris Bisignano have former NFL coach, Charlie Weis on and talk about the QB's that are expected to be in the NFL Draft. Why is coach Weis all in on Jaxson Dart? Should Shedeur Sanders be taken less serious because of his pro day tape? All of that and the special dish of the week on this edition of the Mangia Cast!
In Hour 2… (6:05) ESPN's Dalen Cuff joined to kick off Hour 2 with a preview of the 2025 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The guys and Dalen hit on some of the biggest names to watch for in this year's tournament, such as Duke, Florida and Houston, as well as hitting on Rick Pitino and his current St. John's squad after winning their first Big East title in over 25 years. (15:20) Mike Golic Jr's old collegiate coach, Charlie Weis, stopped by to talk through a few different things with the guys. First, they discussed some of his time coaching the Fighting Irish, as well as coaching Mike Jr himself, but then transitioned into what his son, Charlie Weis Jr is up to these days. Charlie Jr. currently serves as OC and QBs coach of Ole Miss, and Charlie Sr. had strong opinions on the rise of Jaxson Dart during the 2025 Draft Process. Charlie didn't have a bad thing to say about Dart, and understands why he continues to climb draft boards, such as Mel Kiper Jr's third mock draft of the season. (30:18) We've got a source off! In Hour 1, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network discussed how the Minnesota Vikings were effectively out on QB Aaron Rodgers after informing teams they're not trading QB J.J. McCarthy. During the second hour, The Athletic's Diana Russini tweeted “There's no ‘in' or ‘out' on Aaron Rodgers from Minnesota—they're simply not making a decision at this time.” The guys discuss if there's still a chance Rodgers ends up following in Brett Favre's footsteps and ends up in Minneapolis, as well as continuing the convo from Hour 1 on what they're expecting, if anything, from Rodgers' free agency process. (44:20) This, That and The Third THIS: Astronauts return to Earth THAT: Ja'Marr Chase takes a shot at Cincinati Cuisine THE THIRD: EA ups the College Football Video Game Payout Click here to subscribe, rate, and review the newest episodes of GoJo and Golic! No. 19 Ole Miss improved to 7-2 (3-2 SEC) on the season with a 63-31 shellacking of Arkansas (5-4, 3-3) on Saturday. The Rebels claimed just their third win all-time in Fayetteville and first since 2008.History was made everywhere. Third-year Rebel quarterback Jaxson Dart was 25 for 31 for 515 yards (a single-game school record), six touchdowns and no interceptions. His 562 yards of total offense are a national record. Dart passed Ole Miss legend Archie Manning, who'd held it for 40 years.“A really good performance,” Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said. “Obviously there's a couple individuals with record-breaking performances, but I thought the team played really well.“I'd like to single-out (Ole Miss offensive coordinator) Charlie Weis. He's taken a lot of criticism. I thought he had a great game plan today. You saw guys not just making plays but wide open. A lot of credit to the players and offensive coaches.”Senior wide receiver Jordan Watkins set new Ole Miss records for receiving yards (254) and receiving touchdowns (5). The Rebel defense had eight sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Up next is Georgia in a showdown that could determine Ole Miss' College Football Playoff fate. Hear from Nick Saban, Pat McAfee, Pete Golding and Charlie Weis, Jr.
“The only thing that is guaranteed in college is that your career will NOT go exactly as you imagined.”A year ago, the legendary coach, Chris Petersen shared that line with the best high school quarterbacks in the nation at the Elite 11 Finals in Los Angeles and I watched it land like a Simone Biles gold medal routine. As I criss-cross the nation and watch QBs like Oregon's Dillon Gabriel, Penn State's Drew Allar and today, Will Howard at Ohio State compete in training camp, I keep thinking about that line and as each QB drops back to pass I can't help but recognize that each of these signal callers have met their fair share of adversity.Like Coach Petersen said: it's not IF, but WHEN adversity hits.We are in a different era in college football, as 46 projected starters in Power 4 football are transfers. Each of those quarterbacks comes with a story of adversity, and how they had to meet it and compete to work through it. If I'm honest, I think the majority of transfers are leaving their college of choice too soon and robbing themselves of staring those hard times in the eye. If I were to offer advice, I'd urge QBs to make a contract with themselves and to commit to at least 2 years at their initial school, pending a coaching change, and regardless of their place on the depth chart, to compete and lean into the joy of the work. Then take stock of what they learned about themselves on the other side of adversity. One quarterback who transferred and met that adversity is Jake Heaps, who has seen it in numerous unexpected styles of his quarterback life. He shared his lessons learned in our latest conversation, presented by our founding partner 76.Y-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. In my football life, I've learned that it's rare to be able to see life through the lens of a quarterback. It's even rarer to see it through the lens of a 5-Star QB, Elite 11 MVP, freshman starter, two-time transfer, NFL QB, media personality, NFL QB trainer and entrepreneur. But for those that can, there are lessons to be learned. And for those that can't, today's conversation is for you.Jake left Skyline High School in Seattle, WA as an 18-year-old with huge dreams. In 2009, Jake was the Elite 11 MVP and crowned the top quarterback in high school football. He arrived at BYU as a heralded recruit and backed up the hype, starting as a true freshman and even beating the school's freshman record for TDs held by Ty Detmer. But after that first year, his path began to meet adversity and Jake began to learn about himself in the most unexpected and powerful way.He would transfer to Kansas under Charlie Weis, and eventually Miami under Al Golden before starting his professional playing career with the New York Jets, signing as an undrafted free agent. We met in 2009 during the Elite 11 Finals and over the past decade have worked together with that organization, coaching the next generation of QBs. Jake is a product of his experiences and has chosen to pour into quarterbacks across the globe. We discussed what matters most to be an elite QB, advice to parents of recruits and that to be a special player only one thing can cut through, regardless of craft. The work, or as Jake says, “You can't cheat the grind.”Hope you enjoy our conversation and be sure to give Y-Option a follow on Twitter and Instagram for today's report from Columbus, as we get to see one of the most talented teams in recent college football history as part of our Big Ten Network Training Camp Tour.Much love,YogiThis episode is produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Jessica Altman. This podcast is a Best Coast Media production.Y-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. RotoViz co-owner and co-host Dave Caban (RotoViz Fantasy Football Show) travels to the turn of the century when Boston sports was in a very different place. Tom Brady went down, Drew Bledsoe went in, and Troy Brown got creative. Charlie Weis was getting receivers matched up against the Steelers star edge rusher. Bill Belichick makes a shrewd bet on Ty Law and Otis Smith. Pittsburgh's defense does keep them in it long enough for Kordell Stewart and Co. (and Amos Zereoue!) to put together an amazingly swift rally setting up a real white-knuckle fourth quarter. This is Remember That Game, the podcast about sporting events that take you on a journey and maybe chart the path of the zeitgeist. I'm your host Thomas Emerick, enjoy the show.
