Searching the way we think with Jesse Clark, co-founder of Marqo ✅Lessons from working at Stitch Fix and Amazon ✅What it means to be truly “developer first” ✅The decision to make Marqo open source ✅Who will be the winners and losers of the AI revolution   Marqo is building a revolutionary framework that provides search functionality to developers, allowing their applications to search anything - text, images, video, audio - with human-like understanding. Marqo makes it possible to do things that were hard or impossible with keyword search, and is poised to completely reshape how we search. Episode Highlights from Jesse: “The amount of data is increasing exponentially. A lot of it is unstructured, it's messy. We're going to need to be able to search this data, machines will need to be able to search it.” “We've got this tagline: search the way you think. You're able to communicate very fluently, have it understand, and retrieve really relevant results.” “Nothing exists today without open source. There's certainly that somewhat altruistic motivation to give something back after being such a beneficiary. But it's also just a very good way to get feedback and iterate very fast.” “We've already seen the commoditisation of a lot of these technologies around LLMs. We've been very cautious about where we invest on that, because a lot of it is very hard to defend, it becomes commoditised. It's a race to the bottom and the companies just become marketing companies basically. That's fine, but that's not necessarily what we want to do.” Contact Mason here.

Jesse Clark (@jn2clark) is a co-founder of Marqo, the end-to-end, multimodal vector search engine. Vector search has exploded along with the rise of generative AI models, so Marqo's arrival has had excellent timing. The project has quickly grown to almost 3000 GitHub stars, despite being less than a year old. Jesse and his team weren't exactly expecting this level of immediate success, but they are well-positioned to continue developing Marqo as a fixture in the worlds of information retrieval and machine learning.  Subscribe to Contributor on Substack for email notifications, and join our Slack community! This past year, Cherry Creek was more of a respite than ever. It's the place to see world-class murals, walk with friends, and go for bike rides, but it's a heckuva lot more important to Denver than just recreation. When City Cast Denver producer Paul Karolyi stumbled on a massive new creek renovation project last year, he uncovered a fascinating history of creek management (and mismanagement). Today on the show, Paul explores that history with Jesse Clark, a landscape architect the Mile High Flood District contracted to help reimagine our urban waterways and facilitate a healthier relationship between us humans and our beloved Cherry Creek.  To see what this stretch of Cherry Creek between Quebec and Iliff is supposed to look like in a few years, here's a mockup flyover Jesse shared with us: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErfDZs0N2qU For even more on our urban waterways, past City Cast Denver guest Michael Booth has a great story this week in the Colorado Sun about a proposed rule change that would affect how much pollution gets into our water. We discussed how evenly matched these teams are despite their record. However, the confidence is lacking for Jesse and his team until we see Trevor Bauer on Sunday. Nicholas Castellanos kills the Sox dating back to his time with the Detroit Tigers so we'll likely see a big series from him. Eugenio Suarez is swinging it well for the “Buds” as well. Jesse is confident that this series will be 2-1 in favor of somebody, but no one is getting swept this weekend.
