During a press conference today, President Donald Trump, with balls of steel, confronted South African President Ramaphosa about the alleged white genocide taking place against white farmers. Trump played a nearly six-minute-long video that detailed South African politicians calling for the death of white farmers, as well as going through numerous articles detailing targeted murders. The South African president remained firm, stating there is no genocide in South Africa. What's the truth? We'll be answering that question today! Next, huge technological advancements are rolling out in the United States. Trump plans to begin the development and deployment of the “Golden Dome,” a highly sophisticated missile defense system that will protect the United States from sea to sea. But that's not all—Elon Musk's robotaxis will be rolling out in June of this year, meaning more AI eyes and more autonomy. Finally, we've got lots of big news stories to react to, so don't miss it. Behind the scenes at Serial Knitters with Debie Frable in Bootie and Bossy's Episode 42!Ever wonder what goes into hand-dyed yarn? The short answer is A LOT, as we learned from Debie Frable, owner of Serial Knitters Dye House. First there's the prepping of the yarn—teasing out each tie on the skein so that the dye can fully penetrate the fiber (unless you want something that looks like tie-dye). There are 3 ties on a skein, so let's do the math: if she makes 300 skeins of her top-selling yarn, Cherry Creek sock, she is teasing out 900 ties for just that colorway in one base, not to mention the new ties she is attaching so she can manipulate it and hang it up. Then she has to wash it because dirt and fat on the yarn will resist the dye. Then there's the soaking in an acid bath (not the kind of acid used for dissolving dead bodies, in case you were wondering). Tired yet? You have not even started the dyeing, you slacker! Maybe that's multiple dips in a single color to get just the right depth of red for her “Drac Snack” (are you picking up a bit of a Goth theme yet?). Or Debie's favorite speckled yarns where she sprinkles on powdered dyes. She then “cooks” the yarn in a warming oven to set the color. Now more washing, and finally hanging the skeins up to dry. As Debie says,"Nothing about my dye process is glamorous. I consider myself a glorified washer woman, except for the fact that I am dealing with color, and I am in love with color--it inspires me and keeps me going. But it's a heavy job in that you are dealing with wet skeins of yarn, big pots of water, heavy pans of wet yarn. Then you're hunched over a sink washing out yarn. Sometimes knitters think it's so expensive, but you need to understand how much work goes into it."Debie Frable, Serial KnittersThere's a lot of work, but there's also artistry in her colorways, and some quirky creativity, like her colorway named for her favorite cat, Ted, and the adventures they have together in her dreams (look for “Snorkel Ted”). And there are the sweaters she makes for skeletons too--they are clearly having a blast! We learned so much from Debie, not just about dyeing and selling, but also some tips about knitting with hand-dyed yarn. And did we mention her “Killer Sangria” recipe? Because you are going to need a drink after all that work!

Ask anyone in the circle of baseball about Marc Johnson and chances are they either have a tie to him or know someone who does. That's because for more than 50 years, Coach Johnson led one of the best baseball programs in the state of Colorado. A program that produced more than 50 professional players and several that became household names. He grew up in Nebraska and followed his father's passion for the diamond. He played baseball throughout high school and found himself becoming more enamored with how the game was played. After getting his degree from the then Colorado State College (now University of Northern Colorado), he got a job teaching in the Cherry Creek School District. He wasn't there long before he was drafted… into the Army and he was set to head to Vietnam. Until he got a phone call asking if he'd rather go to Vietnam or coach baseball on a base in Texas. He chose the latter. After leaving the Army, and with some coaching under his belt, he came back to Cherry Creek and started to teach again and coach. In the spring of 1973, he took over as the head coach for the Bruins and stayed there until he won his 9th State Title in June of 2024. Now it's time for retirement.

Over the weekend, Colorado Sun politics reporter Sandra Fish was asked to leave the Colorado GOP's big assembly in Pueblo after party chair Dave “Let's Go Brandon” Williams deemed her reporting “unfair.” But is it fair to boot a journalist from an event just because you don't like their reporting? Then, the downtown doldrums saga continues as Cherry Creek's real estate attracts national attention. How can two areas of the same city less than five miles from each other have be experiencing such drastically different economic outlooks? Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi tackle these questions and take a moment to reflect on a long-running pizza beef that may have finally come to an end. State transportation officials for years have been using humor to spice up their safety messaging (e.g., “camp in the mountains, not in the left lane"), but now the Federal Highway Administration says CDOT is too funny. Or maybe not funny enough? Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are talking about the crackdown on humorous safety slogans. Plus, we're hashing out the new historic preservation fight brewing in Park Hill and responding to your comments and recommendations about our episode on Denver's best meat-free eats. Paul talked about the failed preservation push we covered around the Richard Crowther house in Cherry Creek, mentioned the data on traffic fatalities statewide, and quoted from this Washington Post story on the funny safety signage. Bree talked about the time someone hacked a safety sign in Denver. What do you think about the funny safety signs? Should they stay or go? We want to hear from you! It's Thursday, and we are so ready for the weekend. So as usual, newsletter editor and our resident foodie Peyton Garcia joins to talk through Denver's hottest food news: first, a Japanese restaurant that claims to be the oldest in the state is closing in Cherry Creek, while a hot new Japanese place called Kumoya is promising to change the game in Highland. And speaking of everything old being new again, we dig into the recent explosion of interest in neighborhood markets, aka bodegas, and ask: can they thrive in car-centric Denver? Finally, we share our picks for your weekend. Bree mentioned past guest Gil Asakawa's excellent book “Tabemasho! Let's Eat! A Tasty History of Japanese in America” and DeVotchka's upcoming shows at The Stanley Hotel. Paul mentioned Rhein Haus (downtown) and Ay Papi (Cherry Creek). Peyton recommended this event for Native American Heritage Month. For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. CHERRY CREEK SCHOOLS MUST BE STOPPED There is a point when offering "help" to a student is not helpful at all and we've reached that point with Cherry Creek Schools. Kids are now being urged to call a "help" line where they can talk to a rando mental health counselor who promises to keep everything they say confidential. In the case of one "nine year old girl" they also promised to get her help exploring her gender identity. I've got Lori Gimelshteyn from the Colorado Parent Action Network on today and you should watch this video to get the full picture. She joins me at 1.
SCOTT GRAVES WANTS TO SERVE CHERRY CREEK SCHOOLS And you find out more about him here.
THE CHERRY CREEK SCHOOL BOARD IS A WOKE MESS They believe your kids are really their kids and that they should keep things from you. They need fresh blood and I've got candidate Steve McKenna on the show today at 12:30 to talk about why he wants to be on the school board. Find a questionnaire he filled out here.
U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert had a big night out at the theater in Denver this past weekend, complete with vaping, loud singing, and being escorted out. But is this just a case of Big Divorced Energy from the MAGA darling? Or a sign of something bigger? The story (and the surveillance tapes) exploded this week, just as Boebert was attempting to roll out a new image, so we're breaking it all down. Newly elected state representative Tim Hernández joins our state politics and green chile correspondent, Justine Sandoval, to discuss the congresswoman's night out in Denver with producer Paul Karolyi. Plus, all the other local stories that mattered this week and this week's Rocky Mountain Highs and Lows. Do you want to be a founding member of City Cast Denver? In this special edition of the Peristyle Podcast host Ryan Abraham is joined by Shotgun Spratling to give their initial reaction to the newly released Big Ten football schedule for the 2024/2025 football seasons. The Big Ten announced the removal of divisions and the introduction of the Flex Protect Plus scheduling model that will allow every Big Ten team to play a home and road game against all 15 other conference opponents in a four year period. For the Trojans their protected rival (program you will play every season) is UCLA and in year one USC welcomes Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois to the Coliseum with UCLA, Penn State, Maryland, Northwestern and Purdue on the road (to go along with Notre Dame at home and LSU in Las Vegas). In 2025 USC has Indiana, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and UCLA at home and Ohio State, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Rutgers on the road. Initially Ryan and Chris Trevino were scheduled to discuss the massive USC recruiting weekend on Tuesday, but Ryan got ill and we had to postpone the show. So now the guys will spend the latter part of the show talking about how USC hosted more than a dozen class of 2024 official visitors to campus, a well attended USC Elite Camp and what seemed like a constant stream of Fight On! emojis signifying player commitments. The list of scholarship pledges included Modesto (Calif.) Central Catholic four-star offensive lineman Manasse Itete, Clearwater (Fla.) High's 247Sports Composite four-star safety Jarvis Boatwright, Englewood (Colo.) Cherry Creek offensive tackle Hayden Treter, Gardena (Calif.) Serra four-star defensive back Dakoda Fields and Atlanta (Ga.) Booker T. Washington Top247 edge Kameryn Fountain. USC moved up from No. 57 all the way up to No. 21 in the country and No. 2 in the Pac-12. They did so by adding players that should help balance out the class, not only positionally but also geographically.
