The Zodiac's true motives remain unknown, but the study of his crimes reveals his signature. While some murderers may vary their methods of operation, a killer's choices, actions, and words reflect his needs– even when he attempts to deceive and even when he does not realize that he is doing so. In this sense, the killer's crimes will reveal his psychological fingerprint. Decades after he terrified citizens with his shocking crimes and bizarre letters, the Zodiac is known as one of the most enigmatic serial killers in modern history. His motives are unknown, although many people have offered various theories to explain his behavior. Attempts to create a psychological profile often rely on speculation based on our knowledge of other killers, and experts struggle to comprehend the mind of the Zodiac. This episode examines various theories about the killer's motives and personality. The varying descriptions of the Zodiac have created confusion and fueled debate. Some eyewitnesses described the killer as short as 5'8" tall while others said he was approximately 6' tall. One witness thought the Zodiac weighed approximately 180 lbs. while another said he may have been as heavy as 250 lbs. Some estimates of the killer's age ranged from mid-thirties to late-forties. The now-infamous sketch produced by the San Francisco Police Department remains the only representation of the Zodiac's face, although some people question the accuracy of that depiction. The issue was further complicated by theorists who claimed that their suspects matched the physical description of the killer. This episode examines the eyewitness descriptions and the efforts to create a portrait of the Zodiac. The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, and other news outlets ran stories about a French engineer who claims that he has solved the Zodiac's remaining ciphers, known as the Z13 and the Z32. The newly-proposed solutions point to long-time suspect Larry Kane and indicate a connection to a suspected Zodiac postcard and a possible victim who disappeared in 1970. These claims may seem compelling but the facts reveal many problems with the methods used to produce these solutions. A surviving victim and two police dispatchers who talked with the real Zodiac all agreed that the caller known as "Sam" was an impostor, but decades of confusion and popular myths in the books written by Robert Graysmith and the film adaptation by director David Fincher left some people convinced that the real Zodiac was responsible for the telephone calls to the TV show as well as later calls to Belli's home. On October 22, 1969, the Oakland police department received a telephone call from a man who claimed to be the Zodiac. He demanded that famed attorney F. Hours later, Belli and TV host Jim Dunbar spoke by telephone with a man called "Sam" who claimed to be the Zodiac in a televised spectacle. A surviving victim and two police dispatchers who talked with the real Zodiac all agreed that "Sam" was an impostor, but decades of confusion and popular myths left some people convinced that the real Zodiac was responsible for the telephone calls to the Dunbar show as well as later calls to the home of Melvin Belli. The Zodiac claimed that he left the scene of his last known murder and encountered two police officers who asked if he had seen anyone acting "suspicious or strange." According to the killer's version of events, he replied that he had seen a man running by waving a gun and then directed the officers in search of the phantom gunman. The Zodiac's story is often repeated as fact, yet this account only raised many more troubling questions which cast serious doubt on the killer's claims. Facts, common sense, and logic demonstrate that the Zodiac's story is, at best, suspicious and strange.Watch a video of the Zodiac's possible escape route: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L8PSWjvEh4 Written and produced by Michael Butterfield for ZodiacKillerFacts.com / Copyright 2019All music licensed and used by permission. “Frozen Orb” composed and produced by Jens Kiilstofte. “Ghost” and “Creepy Piano Loop” composed and produced by JM Scherf.

Hi there, this is Graham Rowat, voice actor with The Grey Rooms. We are immensely thrilled to be nominated for this year's Audioverse awards. Let me tell you a little about our show. The Grey Rooms is an anthology horror podcast with a narrative wrapper. Each episode you'll hear a standalone tale of terror, but as you listen to the whole season, you'll be told a larger story of The Grey Rooms themselves. The Rooms are a place of torment, and the occupant is trying to discover why they're there, and why they're being thrust, Quantum Leap-style, into these shocking stories where they are a first person witness to a character's gruesome demise. We'd like to present for you now our debut episode; season 1, episode 1. You'll meet our first prisoner of the Grey Rooms and listen as he experiences author Brian Black's, “The Great War.” With respect to our Audioverse nominations, you'll not only be hearing the writing of Brian Black, you'll also hear the audio production of Jason Wilson, the music of JM Scherf, and I, Graham Rowat, play the lead character and narrator of the Great War. Last but not least, as we are a horror podcast, some of the imagery and themes can be disturbing to listeners. Please take appropriate precautions if you feel that group may include you. We hope you enjoy the episode, and thank you for your support. https://thegreyrooms.com

The Grey Rooms Presents: Room #630 - Sanctuary   INTRO - SEASON 1 BONUS 2 Some time ago Jason and I wanted to produce a story from an author that has never been published, never produced, or maybe hasn't even written a story before.  It was decided that we would take time out for each off season to release one of these stories, and today we are happy to do so.  This falls in line with the fact that some listeners tell us how inspired they are by the show, and that they are starting to write their own horror stories because of how embracing our community is to their brand of art.  You can probably imagine the feeling of pride, and the rush that this gives us.  We're so proud to be able to produce new works of audio horror, but also in being able to encourage others to do so.  This year we wanted to start with Christina Wilson. While it's clear that she has supported and sacrificed her share for our podcast, and also had a wonderful voice acting debut as Lucy in our first season, she never really considered herself a fiction writer.  Feeling inspired by the talented writers in our first season, she sat down and hammered out "Sanctuary," the story that you are about to enjoy.   Your first story is always something special.  It's also a very nervous experience.  Many of us still feel the anxiety of waiting to hear how people feel about the story.  It's these very real moments that strike us far more than any monster or evil deed that you might hear about in The Grey Rooms.  Why not take the time to reach out to Christina or any of our authors, really, and let them know what you think about their stories. The authors don't bite, and no doubt they love to hear your thoughts on their work.  And, for that matter, so do Jason and I.  Please don't forget to send us all a review or even hit us up on social media and let us know what you think.  We can't do this all without you. Oh! And as for a story summary:  It's hard being a parent.  You always want to do the right thing, but the challenges are never what you'd expect.  One man's attempt at reaching his son, and creating something great reaches devastating results when he finds himself in...The Grey Rooms.    Written by: Christina Wilson Engineered by: Jason Wilson Music by: JM Scherf   Performances: Father - Warren Richardson Carter - Patrick Mealey   Episode Artwork by: Cassie Pertiet  Social Media Artwork by: Brooks Bigley    Season 2 of The Grey Rooms premieres November 2019.   EXTRA STUFF Visit our website at http://www.thegreyrooms.com Like what we're doing? For Raymond Alexander Greene, this really could be where "Everything Ends."   Written by: Brian Black (He's really nervous right now) Engineered by: Jason Wilson (He's glad it's done right now) Music by: JM Scherf (He hopes he has more time for next season's finale right now) Voiced by: Raymond - Jason Wilson Bob - Graham Rowat The Prison Warden - Warren Richardson Father Tucker - Justinthulu Officer Giving Blindfold - David Cummings Lucy - Christina Wilson Raymond / Lucy's Son - Jason Wilson Jr.  Man Bumped Into - David O'Steele Seated Woman - Charlotte Norup Seated Woman w/ Coffee - Victoria Juan Girl in Princess Dress - Erin Lillis Teddy - Sarah Ruth Thomas Elderly Store Owner - Margaret Ashley Reckless Driver - Alistair Mackey Young Man w/ Hockey Jersey - Patrick Mealey Middle Aged Woman - Holly Lindin Indian Man - Michael Rigg Randall Wolfe - Brian Black Townsfolk - Michael Rigg Erin Lillis Michelle Black Bo Chappell Erin King Augie Peterson Gabe Templin Lindsey Kelly   (So pretty much everyone who has ever existed)   Episode Artwork by - Cassie Pertiet (Isn't this episode art gorgeous?) Social Media Artwork by - Brooks Bigley &  Graham Rowat  (These guys have done such a great job setting up the hype for our episodes, haven't they?)   Thank you all so much for listening to our season finale.  It has been both a wonderful experience, and privilege as we meticulously designed each and every episode for you. We couldn't have done it without all of the wonderful authors that took a chance with us.  We told them our big ideas, and some of them probably didn't quite understand what we were going on about, but they entrusted us to do their stories right.  We're proud of your stories and we hope that you're proud of our efforts to dramatize them as well.  We couldn't have it without the wonderful voice talent that has brought the characters in these stories to life.  From parachute instructors to Teddy Bears,  from English soldiers to Russian priests, we have found such a wide variety of wonderful people to draw out the emotions of each story.  We are so happy that you chose to work with us, and make our show stand out.  We hope that this experience has brought you as much enjoyment as your work has for us.  We couldn't have done it without the music.  JM Scherf crafted our theme song, and then he started crafting the music for some of our episodes.  It's music that we have constantly heard stands out.  Thank you so much for dedicating the time and effort to composing the music for us, JM.  Especially the music required for the finale.  It's fantastic.  We couldn't have done it without our Behind the Door hosts. It started out with Graham Rowat and Brooks Bigley and went on to include people like Sarah Werner, Jon Grilz, Toni Miller, Bo Chappell, Augie Peterson, Dustin Schyler Yoak, Jesse Dedman, and Michael Rigg.  You all took a strange idea to have guest hosts interview everyone for a behind the scenes look of the show, and you knocked it out of the park.  Thank you for all of the wonderful conversations and topics that we were able to enjoy with your help.  We wouldn't have done it without our amazing artists.  We started out with Mediogre producing some of the early art and soon there was Cassie Pertiet coming up to the plate with her distinct vision of each anthology story.  Soon Brooks Bigley and Graham Rowat jumped into the mix and started crafting all of the ads on social media.  These are all such a wonderful and talented team of artists.  We hope that we have provided you a great challenge, and while it took us awhile to get the art to show up, we're so happy that you have given the audience such terrifying and wonderful candies for the eye.  We wouldn't have been able to do anything without our patrons.  We're handing you out keys, stickers, early access, and bonus episodes, but you are giving us so much more.  We're in your debt and everything from the Libsyn hosting, website, sound effects...it's happening because of your generous support. And finally we wouldn't have been able to do it without you listeners.  You jump in every week and download our episodes and tell us how much you enjoy them.  You like our social media posts and tweets.  You recommend us constantly to other listeners looking for something new.  We love you.  All of you.  And we think about you all the time when we're considering things like new stories and whether or not we need to include disclaimers.  We really, really hope that you enjoyed this finale.  We did this for you.  And we're going to continue to do it for you.  Whether you are an author, an actor, a composer, an artist, a host, a patron, a listener, or even The Warden, at the end of the day, we want to tell a great story that is going to fulfill that urge to figure out what is going on.  We know the stories are dark and tragic.  We know that they can be incredibly gory or play on your phobias.  But... We do this to you out of love.  So please subscribe if you haven't already.  Please tell the world about us.  Please continue to tell us how you feel about the show, and what sort of changes or suggestions you have for us.  We want to continue to grow and get better.  Help us to be better.  And, I feel like I haven't said this in awhile, help us to scare your pants off!    EXTRA STUFF Visit our website at http://www.thegreyrooms.com Like what we're doing? Thank you all so much for listening to our penultimate episode. We really hope you've enjoyed episodes 1-12 and we are all currently working hard on finishing up our season finale.  Brian Black lovingly calls Episode 13  "Grey Rooms: The Movie" and it is certainly earning that title.  It's huge.  Hugely huge.  We hope we can say that and still remain respectable adults.  But it's also true.  It's a giant who's who of voice talent that we've been using in every episode.  It's fully scored by JM Scherf.  It's got the longest Raymond and Bob story that we've done to date. It's full of all sorts of mysteries and dark secrets.  And it'll probably spoil Avengers: End Game if you let it (just kidding.) We cannot wait for you to listen to this.  But due to the size of our movie length finale, we might also be a week late in what we normally promise as a bi-weekly podcast.  We've been so good at keeping up with our promises though that we have something else in store for you.  We decided to compile all of the Raymond and Bob intros together into one episode so that everyone can prepare themselves for what is to come.  If you don't feel like relistening to the intros, it's totally fine, and most likely won't hurt Bob's feelings.  At least we think it won't.  He's got layers.  Stay tuned for the compilation episode and the finale! We can't wait to end the season with a bang and we look forward to hearing your thoughts when we bring Episode 13 - Everything Ends to podcatchers everywhere.    EXTRA STUFF Visit our website at http://www.thegreyrooms.com Like what we're doing?
