Today the BLS reported payroll employment rose by only 22,000 in August. Analysts had forecast that the economy would add 75,000 jobs during the month. According to the agency, gains made in health care were offset by losses in federal government employment, as well as mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction. While July's figures were revised up to 79,000 from 73,000, June's numbers were revised down by 27,000, dropping from 14,000 to minus-13,000. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate edged up to 4.3 percent from 4.2 percent. Nearly eight years ago, journalist Shoshana Walter followed a lead on a drug and alcohol rehab program that put patients to work at a chicken plant. What she found was one of many programs that boasted treatment and recovery, but actually profited off the unpaid labor of people struggling with addiction. In her new book, “Rehab: An American Scandal”, Walter continues to interrogate America's drug treatment system by following four people navigating an industry that not only kept patients stuck in a cycle of addiction and relapse, but that actually stymied their recovery. We'll talk through the dark side of the rehab industry, what this book reveals about the ways patients are exploited for profit, and who actually has a chance at recovery in America. Greetings from the East,Awaited still, eagerness persists causing the winter as an endless pursuit, humanity suffers in anticipation & want of new possibilities of nature's renewal. Such was a dream of a fellow Freemason Alessandro Volta, an Italian physicist who invented the battery in the year 1800. We are looking at a finer measure of using bio-degradable electrodes in modern battery and mobile charging methods not limited to the piezoelectric effect where energy is produced just by mechanical pressure on elements which we were studying in the 1900s. Dismal is the fortune of our generations that we look for a higher conduit after sunset to renew our digital lives, and charge our device battery; oh so essential. Freemasons are seekers who spread the findings for everyone's use free of cost. The phenomenon of sending a packet of electric charge as a wifi or LED-based LIFI signal must be one of such freebies that humans can use to free themselves. Wires or no wires, nomads will turn into decent travelers where there will be no crime or theft. Eagerness persists, while it is still awaited. In the long run, the sword is always beaten by the mind - Napoleon Bonaparte (a Freemason)With the budget already presented, the accounting books are being delved into for taxes and general upkeep of the official matters in full swing. What do we do without Brother Secretary & Treasure is all we judge ourselves against. No wonder they are gearing ahead for their retreat before we plan to settle for youth orders month of March. We have already started practicing for degrees and our brothers are wholeheartedly joining in full swing by pleasuring the food prepared by our chef Ali every Thursday who is a prospect and helping around where he can. The monthly checks on brothers accepting new roles in the future are going on along with their proficiency & certifications for the next degrees and roles. However most couldn't make it but so far about 4 brothers might be going to our masonic cruise scheduled for a Mexican getaway on the 26th of Jan, 2024. Once we are back in time for the next stated meeting in February, gearing ahead for at least 3 proficiencies and an influx of degrees our hearts and minds will Masonically say in unison, is it spring already?Shivam Sharma, HA2024 Master

Tulsa, Okla. Mayor Monroe Nichols is championing a $105 million reparations package for the survivors and families of his city's 1921 Race Massacre. It's a philanthropy-driven city and housing rejuvenation project to offset the continuing repercussions from the coordinated attack more than a century ago. At the time, thousands of white residents besieged what was among the most successful and affluent Black communities in the early 20th century. Three hundred Black people died and more than a thousand homes and businesses were destroyed. Years of efforts to compensate descendants for the violence have failed. We'll get perspectives from Freedmen descendants about the importance of this ambitious effort to set things right. Also, we'll learn about a swamp with connections to Indigenous people going back thousands of years. On the homelands of the Nansemond Indian Nation in Virginia, the Great Dismal Swamp was a safe space for tribes. It also became a refuge for Black freedom seekers escaping slavery. Federal officials are exploring it as a new National Heritage Area. GUESTS Hannibal B. Johnson, author, attorney, and consultant Saché Primeaux-Shaw (Ponca, Yankton Dakota, Seminole, and Chickasaw Freedman), historian and genealogist Sam Bass (Nansemond Indian Nation), Chief Emeritus of the Nansemond Indian Nation Alexandra Sutton (African American and Yesàh), co-founder of the Great Dismal Swamp Stakeholder Collaborative and executive director of Indigenous East Eric "Mubita" Sheppard, co-founder of Mubita LLC

Since Ubisoft won't release official sales data for Assassin's Creed Shadows, internet sleuths have put together their best guess, and it's not good. We discuss the lackluster sales along with fan reactions to Ciri being the protagonist and a witcher in the upcoming Witcher IV, author Brandon Sanderson showing an example of how Hollywood purposefully butchers TV and movie versions of beloved IPs, Take Two's removal of queer-focused efforts from its annual report, Nintendo's removal of gender from Miis, and Debra Wilson voice acting as someone who actually doesn't look like her for once.
The spring home selling season has disappointed. Brad Hunter covers builders losing confidence, falling prices, and the “dismal” drop in buyers. The “lock-in effect” of lower mortgages is holding strong, and he doesn't expect rates to fall substantially in the near future. Florida and Texas “have seen the worst of it,” he adds, with buyers aged 55+ nervous about the stock market, but thinks they can bounce back.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Anna Bower, Eugenia Lostri, and Roger Parloff to discuss the week's big national security news, including:“Putting the Dismal in Dismissal.” Donald Trump's election as president for a second time puts the state and federal criminal charges against him—and potentially some of his supporters and co-conspirators—in unprecedented historical territory. Where do these cases seem to be headed? And what will it mean for the broader effort at accountability, especially around Jan. 6?“Taking Bytes Out of Crime.” As one of its last acts in power, the Biden administration seems poised to support a forthcoming U.N. convention on cybercrime, despite reservations among some observers that it may be abused by autocratic regimes and strategic rivals. Why is the Biden administration tempted by the treaty? And what will its support at this late hour mean in practice?“Meme of Rivals.” Donald Trump is only one week in as president-elect but has already released a flurry of appointments and rumored appointments for senior positions in his forthcoming administration. And those appointed range from established Republicans like Sen. Marco Rubio, who is rumored to be Trump's pick for Secretary of State, to iconoclasts like billionaire Elon Musk, who is co-heading a “Department of Government Efficiency” (or “DOGE”). What should we make of these selections thus far—and the process behind them?To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare.
