What's up to my ergonomic ermines and perseverant parakeets! Welcome back to the BNP everyone and thank you for joining! To my patrons: you all are the hop of the antelope jackrabbit and the air vacuum in my water bottle- I wouldn't be spry enough to evade hawks nor would I be able to stay cold for a long time in the desert with you. You are appreciated. This episode is a throwback hodge-podge style ep. You already know I deliver those zany audio tidbits. They took me forever so hopefully you like them, and they include an original poem this week. In addition, I open up about the grieving process I am currently moving through, and discuss the nature of bereavement, as well as techniques for navigating these icy cold and treacherous waters. This discussion leads me into a primer on Sisu (literally: guts), the Finnish art of grit, tenacity, courage and stubborn determination, against any and all odds. Even when you know you will not succeed, sisu drives you forward cheerfully and with indomitable conviction. And sometimes, the magick and power of sisu makes the impossible possible. Stay tuned to the end because I include a recent Barbarian Yak Fest segment with the inimitable Dr. Sylvie Salinger where we discuss the implications of a vaccine-derived strain of polio being detected in a London sewer, as well as the dangers of having the gargantuan and predatory financial firms BlackRock and Vanguard in total control of the U.S. (and increasingly global) food supply.Quick note: unbeknownst to me, my good mic became unplugged for a couple of this week's segments. I did what I could with the audio but you'll notice a small difference in richness of tone. My apologies- hectic weekend. In Finland, "sisu" is a concept that, while it can't be strictly translated into English, roughly corresponds to a combination of bravery, resilience, grit, and determination. My guest today will help us unpack it further, and offers advice on how everyone can live life with more sisu. Her name is Joanna Nylund and she's the author of Sisu: The Finnish Art of Courage. Joanna explains what sisu is and how it was exemplified in the David and Goliath story of the Finns facing down the Russians during the Winter War. We then talk about what it is about Finland that birthed the quality of sisu and ways to develop it even if you're not Finnish, including embracing discomfort, getting out despite the weather, and seeking silence and solitude as a way to develop inner strength. We also talk about the Finnish practice of retreating to a rustic cabin in the summer to reacquaint oneself with simplicity, manual labor, and nature. We end our conversation with the sisu way of communication, and how to foster sisu in children. Get the show notes aom.is/sisu. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
"Resilience" means both grit & determination, as well as the ability to bounce back after loss, setbacks & disasters. Mexicans have a lot to teach the world with their concept of "Zozobra" as described by Mexican philosophers Emilio Uranga & Jorge Portilla. "Zozobra" in this COVID-19 pandemic, for example, is the suffering, the anxiety, the pain we all feel, the sense that our ship is about to capsize, the alienation & limbo. Facing this anxiety together, as the residents of Sante Fe, New Mexico, USA when they burn a huge monster effigy every year, can bring relief. The other nation we look to, Finland, has the concept of "Sisu", a second wind after suffering for a time, a discovery of inner strength to face our battles & challenges. "Sisu" is what we all need to face 2021 & an ongoing pandemic where death & destruction are everywhere. Forsaking superstition & conspiracy theories, we must unite against a common enemy, COVID-19, as well as other challenges like climate change, social unrest, authoritarianism, etc. Let us use these Mexican & Finnish concepts of resilience to fight the good fight and win! Have you ever faced an insurmountable barrier? If so, a Finnish idea may help you solve that problem. Sisu is a concept that means strength of will, determination, perseverance. It’s kind of like stoicism.Finnish author Joanna Nylund delves into this concept in her book Sisu: The Finish Art of Courage, which was published in 2018.I recently had the chance to catch up with Joanna and in this interview, she explains: What exactly Sisu is and why it's so useful How this Finish concept can help become a better entrepreneur, writer or author Her process for writing the book Sisu: The Finnish Art of Courage Why she uses so many visual elements in her book How photography informs her writing and creative workI started by asking Joanna how she went about explaining a finish concept outside of her native country.ResourcesSisuAttention writers:Would you like a discount for grammar checker? Sisu sorta means courage, determination, and integrity but it’s basically impossible to translate perfectly into English. In this episode Joanna Nylund shares some of the characteristics and behaviors of Finnish people. I hope you, like myself, find yourself wanting to develop and mimic these ideals in your own life. Plus, I’m like 90-something percent Finnish so I really found myself relating to a lot of the traits Finnish people seem to have! Take a listen to learn about sisu, saunas, ice swimming, the importance of the outdoors, and even why you don’t have to fill every minute of a social gathering with chit chat! This time, Very Finnish Problems creator Joel Willans is joined by Joanna Nylund, author of Sisu: The Finnish Art of Courage, to discuss, as the book title suggests, Finnish resilience. Is sisu somehow a Finnish cultural trait or do Finns mostly benefit from briefly defining a necessary universal way to stay sane while facing hardship? Co-host Thomas Nybergh returns to blame Joel for British imperialism and remains skeptical about how close to nature Finns really are. We all want to lead a life of greater purpose and happiness. Cultivating the Finnish quality of sisu might be the answer. My guest on the podcast today is Joanna Nylund. She was born and raised in Finland, where she started her writing career doing music reviews for a local magazine at age 15. After studying English literature at university and living in the UK for a few years, she has been working as a translator, journalist, copywriter and photographer. She now lives in Helsinki with her husband. Joanna's new book, the subject of our conversation today, is a comprehensive guide to the Finnish attitude of courage and determination in the face of adversity. The ancient Finnish word sisu describes an attitude of courage, resilience, grit, tenacity and perseverance. This key psychological competence enables extraordinary action in times of adversity. To have sisu confers a further dimension of doing so with honesty, integrity and humility. There's a personal finance aspect to sisu too, something we cover during our conversation. Here's my conversation with Joanna Nylund, author of Sisu: The Finnish Art of Courage, in episode 332 of Informed Choice Radio.
First there was hygge from Denmark, then came lagom from Sweden, but now the Finns are getting in on the act with their own wellbeing ethos – sisu. And they could be on to something, because Finland has just been named the happiest country in the world by the Happiness Research Institute. Joanna Nylund, author of Sisu: The Finnish Art of Courage, joined us as a guest on the latest In The Moment Magazine podcast to talk about her new book. You can read more about sisu in issue 10, which is on sale in the UK on 6th March.
