Gareth "Angel" Thompson is a pro wrestler with a mission. He holds Wrestling Church in Bradford, England."We do baptisms and body slams, sermons and suplexes. We've kind of brought these two worlds of professional wrestling and church together to tell Bible stories in a physical way, to unpack it in a language that people understand, to reach those normally not coming into church. We do that through the storytelling narrative of good versus evil, of David versus Goliath, of Andre the Giant and Hulk. And actually all these people are saying, 'Yes' to Jesus and they're stepping into the fight."In his powerful testimony, hear how as a child he was mistreated and even left for homeless until Christians came to his rescue. Now Thompson shares his unique message of hope all over England.Enjoy today's "wrestling match" as announcer Jacob York takes you through "The Smackdown with the Enemy" as Gareth fights his demons from the past.Helpful links:Gareth "Angel" Thompson, InstagramGareth, FacebookGareth's YouTube ChannelKingdom WrestlingFountains Church, Bradford, EnglandChristians Against PovertyCAP-USOne80, John Kirkby, CBE, Episode 43Let us know what you thought of the show!Follow One80 on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or our website.Never miss a One80. Taking an entrepreneur's approach, one man has been challenged by God to start sharing Jesus in his own life, and then expand it to the whole church. Can he do it? He's done before with poverty, so we are audaciously believing it can happen with evangelism!Check out the Isaiah 61 Movement website and search for "i61" for your mobile app store.Dr John Kirkby CBE (prefers 'Johnny Boy') is the founder of Isaiah 61 Movement (i61m) and Christians Against Poverty (CAP). John Kirkby, CBE, was raised in West Yorkshire, England and became orphaned at 18 years old. Anger and trouble followed and his career was a feared debt-collector. But soon, the tables were turned--John was the one in poverty and extreme debt. At the end of his rope and seemingly without hope, he found Jesus. As a result, John decided not just to quit his career, but to help those in extreme poverty find financial freedom, using his expertise to free them from their debt and point them to Jesus, the ONE who truly liberates us. Christians Against Poverty is now the pre-eminent Christian ministry in the UK and serves the poor in several other countries.Today's Sendoff features the two-minute testimony from One80 listener Desiree Davis. A podcast from one of our charity partners, debt counselling charity CAP (Christians Against Poverty). Joe Beardsall from CAP asks founder John Kirkby to share his story of finding a way out of debt, how he founded the charity, what it's been like helping people during this difficult year and includes a story of transformation from Joanne, a CAP client.
The whole episode is from a charity/ thrift shop haul. Some familiar artists amongst them- Georgia Gibbs, Mugsy Spanier, Eve Boswell, Billy Banks and Teresa Brewer. Otherwise some great discoveries. Shirley Abicair sings the title song from the 1956 film, 'Smiley.' She was Australian, played the zither and came to Britain in 1952. Still with us at the age of 92. Harry James is hardly forgotten but this is a pared back sound from the trumpeter and band leader, Feet dragging blues. Josh White, folk singer and political activist sings I'm gonna move to the outskirts of town. Another of the recordings in did in London in 1950. Tino Rossi, despite his Italian sounding name was a hugely successful French singer of the 1940s and 50s and sold 30 million records world wide. Roberto Murolo, champion high diver, sings La Mogliera. He specialised in Neopolitan songs. Love this one. The Four bright sparks sing about dreaming in 1930. Orchestras and bands next. John Kirkby with Fifi's Rhapsody from 1941. He was a double bass player and champion of the chamber jazz style. Early 1950s R&B big band sound from Earl Bostick, Lou Preager Orchestra, from the Hammersmith Palais. with The night the floor fell in. Vocals by Paul Rich. My record of the day is the Roy Fox band from The Kit Kat Restaurant, London in 1933. The Denver born bandleader directs Sid Buckman singing My Wild Oats and the vocals of Peggy Dell on We're all riding riding on a rainbow. Peggy Dell was born in Ireland as Margaret Tisdall. Its an unusual voice for a British big band of the time. Happy listening. Stay safe. Â

John Kirkby, Founder & International Director of CAP (Christians Against Poverty), joins us to celebrate the 20th birthday of CAP and the 10th birthday of the CAP Centre in Bracknell.More information about CAP can be found on their website at https://capuk.org plus their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CAPuk and their Twitter page at https://twitter.com/CAPuk.
John Kirkby, Founder Christians Against Poverty, speaks with passion and enthusiasm on evangelism, looking at the amazing work of the Kerith Centre in leading souls to Christ. In "Gone fishin"; John looks at how Jesus implored His disciples to go and become "Fishers of men". Jesus used an analogy that they would understand. He wanted to catch their attention and His heart was to impress on each of them, and all of us who follow, that seeing individuals come to know Christ as their personal saviour is a crucial or in fact the crucial element of all our reason for being here. John looks at some real fishermen in clips from "Tuna Wars" from Discovery Channel, and picks out their approach plus their reaction to getting a bite and then catching the fish. John compares, inspires and encourages us all that we too can be "fishers of men", that God is with us, and talks about the disappointments and opportunities we must take. Yet the joy of seeing one life changed is worth any and every effort we put in. John finishes with a look at the miraculous things that God is able to do when we do what only we can do and see some real life examples of Fish literally jumping into the boat, I kid you not!
John Kirkby is our guest speaker at both of our morning services today. John is the Founder and International Director of Christians against Poverty.
