Gareth "Angel" Thompson is a pro wrestler with a mission. He holds Wrestling Church in Bradford, England."We do baptisms and body slams, sermons and suplexes. We've kind of brought these two worlds of professional wrestling and church together to tell Bible stories in a physical way, to unpack it in a language that people understand, to reach those normally not coming into church. We do that through the storytelling narrative of good versus evil, of David versus Goliath, of Andre the Giant and Hulk. And actually all these people are saying, 'Yes' to Jesus and they're stepping into the fight."In his powerful testimony, hear how as a child he was mistreated and even left for homeless until Christians came to his rescue. We have a strategic partnership with Christians Against Poverty. Hew comes and shares with us the biblical wisdom beneath being wise and generous.
Stewart McCulloch joined Christians Against Poverty (CAP) at the start of the year as its new chief executive. He previously led the charity Stewardship. CAP's latest report says that 46 per cent of its clients have considered taking their own life as a way out of their debt, and nine out of ten have reported having sleepless nights from financial anxiety (News, 24 May). On the podcast this week, Francis Martin interviews Mr McCulloch about the findings of the report, as well as how the cost-of-living crisis is affecting CAP's clients. He also explains how CAP works with churches, why the charity is unapologetically Christian in its approach, offering clients prayer and invitations to church, and he calls for politicians to do more to tackle debt. “Our clients are our neighbours, they are friends of friends, they are the people amongst us, and so it's a really transformative ministry in so many different ways,” he says. “It's never just about the finances, because it's about the social isolation, it's about the anxiety, it's about the spiritual poverty as well as the material poverty.” Try 10 issues of the Church Times for £10 or get two months access to our website and apps, also for £10. ABOUT FR ALEX Father Alex Frost was not always a man of the cloth. He found his calling while running an Argos store in his native Burnley, moonlighting as a stand-up comedian and die-hard fan of The Clarets and Depeche Mode. But having achieved his profession, Fr Alex quickly recognised the 17,000 inhabitants of his new parish were in dire need of help. Burnley is typical of many towns across Britain: a place of run-down council estates, severe poverty litter, crime and drugs, but also a place where the sacred sits alongside the secular in an intimate and personal way. And so it was that he found himself running a food bank from a car park, helping the desperate amid his flock as the pandemic raged. Fr Alex's down-to-earth style of ministry struck a chord with people of all faiths, cultures and class at a time when the divide between rich and poor is widening cataclysmic-ally. But amid the tragedy, addiction, appalling loss, illness and neglect, there also lies hope, joy and moments of comedy. Our Daily Bread is as much the story of the rich cast of characters that cross the threshold of any church as it is our vicar's. Through them it shows the continued relevance of the church for those in peril: the poor and the marginalised. This heartfelt and moving book seeks to give a voice to the voiceless, charting the tragedy and pain, humour and hope which are ever-present in his community. It is ultimately about modern poverty – and how we all can, and should, espouse Christian virtues of love, kindness, tolerance. ABOUT CHINE I have loved seeing my words on the page since I got my first byline in the school magazine, aged six years old. Born in Nigeria, I moved to the UK at the age of four. I read theology & religious studies at Cambridge University before training as a newspaper journalist and over the years have written for several regional and national publications. I'm a regular contributor to BBC Religion & Ethics programmes, including Thought for the Day on Radio 4's Today programme, the Daily Service, and Prayer for the Day. My first book ‘Am I Beautiful?' – explored body image among women of faith. In my spare time, I sit on a number of charity boards, including Greenbelt Festival, Christians in Media and Christians Against Poverty; and regularly speak and write on issues of race and faith. I'm lucky enough to say my day job is also a dream job - I'm director of Theos, the religion and society think tank. Previously, I headed up community fundraising and public engagement at international development charity Christian Aid. I live in south-east London and am wife to Mark and mum to an energetic toddler. My second book God Is Not a White Man? was published by Hodder & Stoughton in May 2021.

Lucinda talks to Phill Holdsworth of Aurun Gold Ltd, who are dedicated to taking the anxiety out of money, about financial wellbeing - how it's becoming even more of a concern with the recent rise is the cost of living, and what we can do to improve things for our people so as to best ensure that they do not have to bring their anxieties to the workplace. KEY TAKEAWAYS Wellbeing is the holistic view of a person, including physical, mental and financial. One always affects the other, and so if something is wrong it can lead to a downturn in productivity and engagement. If you do support your workforce with issues surrounding wellbeing, you can increase engagement and loyalty by caring for financial wellbeing. This also prevents the revolving door syndrome. If people aren't facing up to their financial obligations or struggling against the rising costs, we can't take the attitude that it's necessarily their fault, or that they are lacking in some way. People simply become overwhelmed. Simply raising salaries so as to provide more income does not solve people's anxieties around money. If they have more money, they will still worry. We need to understand the root psychological cause behind this. BEST MOMENTS 'If you think about true wellbeing, then you're thinking about the whole person' 'We are responsible for reward' 'People think that money will solve all their problems' 'Why is it that somebody who doesn't need to worry about money, worries?' Have you ever gotten to a place in life where you've had a moment to reflect on your journey and the decisions you made, or didn't make, to get you to where you are today? Oftentimes, when having conversations with others who have been walking in faith for more than a few years, they can point back to pivotal moments where they saw God divinely orchestrate the details as they took steps forward. Even getting to pause to look back and see the ways things pieced together can be eye opening and hopefully life-giving when you see that truly every step of your journey got you to where you are now. And even the moments you wish you could unwrite, were pivotal in bringing you to this present moment in time. In today's conversation I get to dive into the seemingly unlikely ways God would move and have favor over a ministry, that started simply through a prayer and a desire to bring the loving and life saving message of Jesus to others through a life surrendered to what God could do. Today I have the honor and privilege of connecting with a gentleman I had the chance to work for years and years ago but also thrilled to share more about the ministry He is leading as President and CEO. Kevin Palau is President and CEO of the Luis Palau Association. Kevin joined LPA in 1985 and began directing the day-to-day operation of the ministry in the late 1990s. Under his leadership, LPA has united tens of thousands of churches in hundreds of cities to love and serve their communities and clearly share the Good News of Jesus. During Kevin's time at LPA he has also helped develop a global network of hundreds of partner evangelists and launched a City Gospel Movements effort that helps unite churches to serve their city and proclaim the Good News on an ongoing basis. Kevin helps lead TogetherPDX, a sustainable, united movement of churches in Portland, Oregon. His book, Unlikely: Setting Aside Our Differences to Live Out the Gospel describes the ongoing impact of the movement. He lives in Beaverton, Oregon with his wife, Michelle, and enjoys serving on the boards of Alpha USA, Christians Against Poverty, and Transforming the Bay with Christ.) Looking back over the years of incredible moments that God has showed his unrelenting favor and has pieced so many things together; Im sure has been a sweet reminder of God's intricate hand at work through the many years of ministry with Luis Palau Association. As you listen today, I hope you're not only inspired and encouraged by the incredible work and ministry of LPA, and stories Kevin has to share. Dr Ciara Fitzpatrick reflects on the Crushed by the Cost of Living event held at Stormont. Attendees heard people from all over Northern Ireland describing how the crisis is affecting them, while experts outlined their demands on politicians to provide more help. While that event was happening, Westminster announced its programme of support measures to help people with increasing fuel costs. The Consumer Council's energy expert, Raymond Gormley, explains what helps available and how much we know about how people can access it. Linda visits a Life Skills course run by Christians Against Poverty to find out what practical advice is available for people of all faiths and none.
In this long-form conversation Kevin Palau, president and CEO of the Luis Palau Association, reflects on the historic ministry of his Argentinian-born father, who trained and participated in Billy Graham crusades, and led similar crusades throughout Latin America. He talks about new ways of telling the story of Jesus in a modern society, and how today that mission is just as much about transforming the individual as it is about “the desire for social justice and to see institutions and structures transformed.” Kevin also tells the origin story of TogetherPDX, a collaboration of churches he founded 15 years ago to meet the needs of the citizens of Portland, Oregon, where the Luis Palau Association is based. He discusses how that has been a catalyst for City Gospel Movements across the U.S., which helps churches in the same city join together to be an essential part of making a difference in things like public education, foster care, refugee communities, and people living with homelessness. Kevin Palau is President and CEO of the Luis Palau Association, which unites tens of thousands of churches in hundreds of cities to love and serve their communities and clearly share the Good News of Jesus.
