Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #596 was recorded live at Singing Brook Studio in Worthington Massachusetts in late October of 2024 and is an hour of visionary acoustic improvised music played by the Gaea Star Band featuring Mariam Massaro on vocals, Native flute, ukuleles, steel and nylon string acoustic guitars and electric guitar, Bob Sherwood on piano and bass guitar and Craig Harris on Native drum and congas. Today's show begins with the beautiful, pastoral “Like A Brand New Day”, a pretty, light song with a classical Neopolitan feel before we move to the “Gaea Star Goddesses” album's “Isis”, a reverent, celestial prayer with a fine vocal from Mariam. “Pacha Mama” and “Amaru Machay” follow, both tracks from the “Gaea Star Goddesses” album, the first a bright celebration with a classic folk feel, the second beginning as a solemn, reverent psalm before lifting off to Dionysian abandon with powerful work from the band. “Oya Thunderqueen” from the same album is a rocking, New Orleans-flavored rocker with tight electric rhythm guitar work from Mariam over Bob's barrel role piano and “Heights Of Love” comes from the “Gaea Star Crystal” album with the band taking it up yet another notch with this powerful rocker. “Queen Of Heaven”, also from today's featured LP “Gaea Star Goddesses”, is a rich, complex anthem performed flawlessly by the band and featuring overdubs of bass guitar, Native drum and vocals and flute from Mariam. “We Call In The Wind” is a powerful, fundamental medicine song with a beautiful, jazzy refrain and a driving performance from the band propelled by Craig's powerful conga groove. “Pele” is a sunny Hawaiian reggae workout played drum-tight by the ensemble led by Mariam's tiny soprano ukulele and wide, leaping melody and “I Am The Mother Earth” closes today's show with a powerful, mystical musical journey accompanying a fundamental, powerful prayer from Mariam in conversation with her Native flute. Whether it's vanilla, strawberry or Neopolitan between two chocolate wafers, the dessert sure will hit the spot on a hot summer day. The original ice cream sandwich sold for a penny in 1900 from a pushcart in the Bowery neighborhood of New York. Newspapers never identified the name of the vendor in articles that appeared across the country. However, the ice cream sandwiched between milk biscuits became a hit. Soon, pushcarts popped up around the city and country during the summer months selling the portable treats. Early pictures show beachgoers at Atlantic City getting their ice cream sandwiches for 1¢ each.
35 Let your loins be girt, and lamps burning in your hands.Sint lumbi vestri praecincti, et lucernae ardentes in manibus vestris, 36 And you yourselves like to men who wait for their lord, when he shall return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately.et vos similes hominibus exspectantibus dominum suum quando revertatur a nuptiis : ut, cum venerit et pulsaverit, confestim aperiant ei. 37 Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when he cometh, shall find watching. Amen I say to you, that he will gird himself, and make them sit down to meat, and passing will minister unto them.Beati servi illi quos, cum venerit dominus, invenerit vigilantes : amen dico vobis, quod praecinget se, et faciet illos discumbere, et transiens ministrabit illis. 38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.Et si venerit in secunda vigilia, et si in tertia vigilia venerit, et ita invenerit, beati sunt servi illi. 39 But this know ye, that if the householder did know at what hour the thief would come, he would surely watch, and would not suffer his house to be broken open.Hoc autem scitote, quoniam si sciret paterfamilias, qua hora fur veniret, vigilaret utique, et non sineret perfodi domum suam. 40 Be you then also ready: for at what hour you think not, the Son of man will come.Et vos estote parati : quia qua hora non putatis, Filius hominis veniet Three things made Francis of Caracciolo stand out from his wealthy Neopolitan friends: he was powerfully drawn to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, he fasted every Saturday, in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and he had a generous love for the poor. When he was seriously ill at the age of twenty-two, he vowed that if he were cured he would devote himself to the service of God and to his fellow men. He became a priest and was the founder of the Order of Minor Clerks Regular. Francis instituted perpetual adoration as one of the works of his order. He died A.D. 1608.

Craig Northey, lead singer of Odds, joined Gregg Tilston and Karim Kanji on the show earlier this year. Canadian rock band Odds released their seventh studio album, "Crash the Time Machine," co-produced by Steven Page earlier this year. The album explores themes of struggle and community, showcasing the band's evolution into new musical directions while maintaining their dark ironic signature. The first track, "Staring at a Blank Page," is described as defiantly joyful, offering a perspective on overcoming immovable obstacles by altering one's own outlook. Singer and guitarist Craig Northey emphasizes the significance of friendship as a form of immortality, acknowledging the collaborative influence of friends, including the late John Mann of Spirit of the West, on the album. The band, consisting of Northey, bassist Doug Elliott, drummer Pat Steward, and guitarist Murray Atkinson, reflects on their musical journey, rooted in the present but informed by a rich past dating back to their founding in 1987. Odds gained recognition with their 1991 debut, "Neopolitan," and continued to achieve success with Gold-selling releases like "Bedbugs" in 1993 and Platinum-selling "Good Weird Feeling" in 1995. After a hiatus in 1999, they regrouped in 2007 to embark on the second chapter of their recording career with the release of "Cheerleader" in 2008.

Conor is the founder of Lala's Neopolitan-ish Pizza, first as a mobile, pop-up pizza food truck to his first brick and mortar establishment. “It was really just a hobby for me at the beginning…it never seemed like…a stable way to make a living. The Ojai Music Festival's Artistic Director Ara Guzelimian was well situated to lead the festival through the tumult of the past three years. He's certainly looking forward to the June 8-11 festival this year and a return to something more closely resembling normal and worrying more about the music and less about the logistics of managing this premier festival of modern contemporary music through a global pandemic. He will be helped this year by returning guest Rhiannon Giddens (ep. 70), as Music Director. Giddens, a generational talent whose broad interests are well-suited to Ojai's spirit of musical adventure and exploration, was so charmed by Ojai in 2020 (the festival was held in September that covid-19 year) that she was eager to return. Ara didn't have to ask her twice to partner with him on programming. Among the audience offerings this year will be a chamber and voice ensemble performing Giddens' "Omar's Journey," from her opera about the Islamic scholar who was sold into bondage in the 19th century and continued his scholarly pursuits despite the horrors of slavery. Of course, there will also be the wide range of pieces performed which characterize the festival, from Bach to John Adams to ancient Chinese music to folk ballads to rapper DJ Flying Lotus. Guzelimian was formerly the artistic director in the 1990s, and recently retired as Dean of The Julliard School, perhaps the most prestigious music school in the country. He has conducted the popular "chalk talks" before the performances for decades. We talked about his journey to Ojai, his brilliant career and Ojai's mystical nature. We also talked about John Luther Adams, Harry Partsch and why Ojai remains so important to global culture. We did not talk about FDR's campaign against Alf Landon, Neopolitan pizza culture or sportfishing for Nile perch on Lake Tanganyika. Check out this year's schedule at ... https://www.ojaifestival.org/2023-festival-schedule/
It's the holiday season, so we decided to kick back, let loose and we definitely went all over the place! Todd discusses his Neopolitan-like build and Brett chats about the new rocks and progress on the Terminal area of the layout where he's adding a gulley/storm water runoff area. We also talked about some more affordable plaster that a long-time listener and original guest of the show, Steve had recommended to us. The details on it, directly from an email to us from him are below: "This is from AGES ago, but I use Durobond 45 for all my rockwork - it is a fraction of the cost of plaster in hobby stores. Here's an old blog post on it: https://rgsrr.blogspot.com/2013/11/enterprise-and-hesperus-scenery-update.html For example - here's 25lbs for it - $10 at Menard's: https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/drywall/joint-compound/sheetrock-reg-durabond-reg-45-pre-mixed-setting-type-joint-compound/381110/p-1444445395321-c-13060.htm?tid=-6689639879862189084&ipos=2" Enjoy!

4 ripe hosts are on display this week to unpack celebrity meat, Jamie Spears's TV pilot, hentai Zoombombing, and the admiration of "shapely pudenda." Plus, Joss Whedon's haunted, annoying past, a heartfelt message of support for our Neopolitan-dicked Kings, and so much more!
“I am supposed to be here, I belong here. I'm doing the right things, I'm there, it just takes time.” This week, I speak with the artist who designed the tie I wore to my wedding, Marcel P. Ames, the owner of X of Pentacles (@xofpentacles), a bespoke Neopolitan clothing company (https://xofpentacles.com/). During our first live conversation together, we swap experiences with anxiety and our fear of failure. I reveal my childhood fear of buttons, whereas Marcel was a button collector, the King of Buttons. Marcel talks about the hardships that helped him kick imposter syndrome and his fear of failure. We both discuss the illusion of stability, fashion's role in self-discovery and how we can go from being passive dreamers to lucid dreamers. Andy reveals his therapy origin story. Like Batman, we work through the pain together, while glimpsing each other's artistic processes. We strive not to be trash but compost. We become friends. Today I feature as part of my summer series on Great Baritones, one of the greatest Broadway baritones of all time, John Raitt (1917-2005). Wait: did I say one of the greatest? Make that possibly the greatest! Along with Alfred Drake and a handful of others, John Raitt completely redefined the Broadway leading man: strapping, robust, virile, handsome, with an operatic caliber voice and splendid acting chops to match. His creation of the role of Billy Bigelow in Rodgers and Hammerstein's magnum opus, Carousel, turned a deeply problematic character into a sympathetic one. In this episode we hear excerpts from this role, as well as some of Raitt's other hits (and non-hits), both on—and away from—Broadway: The Pajama Game, Oklahoma!, Annie Get Your Gun, Three Wishes for Jamie, Show Boat, and others, as well as a bit of opera! I also feature tracks from four of his solo records, recorded and released between 1955 and 1970, which include Neopolitan songs, folk songs, and pure late 60s pop as well as Broadway standards not normally associated with him. Some of his duet partners include Barbara Cook, Rosemary Clooney, Florence Henderson, Doretta Morrow, Anne Jeffreys, as well as his daughter Bonnie, herself one of the great blues singers and guitarists of the late 20th century. We also hear Bonnie's deeply personal song “Circle Dance,” which concerns their sometimes fraught—but eventually fully reconciled—relationship. Was he really a baritone, was he a tenor masquerading as a baritone, or was he a true “baritenor”? I consider all these possibilities but leave it to my listeners to draw their own conclusions. No matter how you assess John Raitt's voice, in the end, it sustained him through a career that lasted seven decades; it is a thrill to present him to my listeners in his full baritenorial splendor. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. The future finally arrived yesterday when Domino’s announced it’s going to start delivering pizza with driverless cars. --Left-Left-Left Right Left— Pizza wasn’t even a thing til after World War II. Long before that.. in the 1700’s… the first pizza came out an oven in Naples Italty smothered in oil and tomato. It’d be a long time before they’d top it with cheese. Or Pineapple. On these shores Italian immigrants first served pizza in 1895 in big cities. But it only bubbled across the country after World War II … when troops stationed in Italy got to enjoy real Neopolitan pizza. After that… its popularity exploded. And yesterday’s announcement by Dominos… could be one of the most important in pizza history. They’re testing pizza delivery in a driverless car… at one Dominos in Houston. You prepay on the app… and you check a box if you want driverless delivery. You track the pizza’s trip on GPS… and then a Nuro R2 autonomous car pulls into the driveway. It’s a 4 foot tall white push-me pull you. It’s 8 feet long and you can barely tell which is the front and which is the back. You have to go get the pizza from the Nuro. When you order they give you a pin number. Enter it on the side of the car and a door gently swings upward revealing your hot delicious pizza… hopefully without pineapples. And as the door gently closes… you can smile …realizing that you didn’t have to tip a pizza guy. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode we talk food with cultural historian Dr Melissa Calaresu. The need to nourish ourselves is an eternal, daily preoccupation for all of us, but what we eat, and why, is an altogether meatier subject. Food is pleasure, performance, politics and even panic. Which fruit was a full-blown fashion craze in the 1600s? What did an undergraduate Isaac Newton feel guilty about buying? And why are our own early food memories so powerful? In Episode 6 of Sacred & Profane Love, Professor Jennifer A. Frey (University of South Carolina) has a conversation with Zena Hitz (St. John’s College) about friendship, the intellectual life, and the virtue of seriousness in Elena Ferrante’s Neopolitan novels. This episode explores how the cultivation of an inner life through contemplation–i.e., seeing, understanding, and savoring things as they are–allows us to enter into a deep and meaningful communion with other human persons.

Fanfics read: Gurren Jesus (by Jasonbobdude) Enjoy Your Strap-On, Sir (by jen0va99) The Finer Points of Carrots (by Decadent Meerkat) Readers: Stevo, Logan, Shawn Only a week between recording this and the first episode, yet somehow took two months to edit. Damn, our crew really needs to unionize to justify such selfish and entitled behavior! Also, I’m starting to notice a trend with Season 11 thus far: there’s a lot of talk about nuclear stuff. No real reason, just…nuclear stuff. Stevo, Shawn and Logan read a few stories: one about Gurren Lagan (featuring Jesus), one about some lawyers that star in a Capcom game, and one about a Disney property that was inexplicably popular for some reason or another. Also features a small cameo from then two-month-old Xavier! Already making his daddy proud, that boy was. The whole episode is from a charity/ thrift shop haul. Some familiar artists amongst them- Georgia Gibbs, Mugsy Spanier, Eve Boswell, Billy Banks and Teresa Brewer. Otherwise some great discoveries. Shirley Abicair sings the title song from the 1956 film, 'Smiley.' She was Australian, played the zither and came to Britain in 1952. Still with us at the age of 92. Harry James is hardly forgotten but this is a pared back sound from the trumpeter and band leader, Feet dragging blues. Josh White, folk singer and political activist sings I'm gonna move to the outskirts of town. Another of the recordings in did in London in 1950. Tino Rossi, despite his Italian sounding name was a hugely successful French singer of the 1940s and 50s and sold 30 million records world wide. Roberto Murolo, champion high diver, sings La Mogliera. He specialised in Neopolitan songs. Love this one. The Four bright sparks sing about dreaming in 1930. Orchestras and bands next. John Kirkby with Fifi's Rhapsody from 1941. He was a double bass player and champion of the chamber jazz style. Early 1950s R&B big band sound from Earl Bostick, Lou Preager Orchestra, from the Hammersmith Palais. with The night the floor fell in. Vocals by Paul Rich. My record of the day is the Roy Fox band from The Kit Kat Restaurant, London in 1933. The Denver born bandleader directs Sid Buckman singing My Wild Oats and the vocals of Peggy Dell on We're all riding riding on a rainbow. Peggy Dell was born in Ireland as Margaret Tisdall. Its an unusual voice for a British big band of the time. Happy listening. Stay safe.

This week we cover "All Hallows Eve" 1 and 2 as well as "Terrifier". The first two movies are anthologies while the last is a straight up slasher. While the quality is a bit iffy at times the best thing about this series is that it gave us Art The Clown. This homicidal mime with his tiny hat and trashbag of implements is the stuff of nightmares. He's well on his way to becoming one of the icons of horror-- along with Freddie, jason, and Michael. I cant wait for "Terrifier 2" which is due out in October. Also check out the top 8 pizza styles. Do you prefer the original Neopolitan, Chicago deep dish or St Louis' cracker like crush? Boniface is our first Neopolitan pope, but he is certainly the vanilla. In his episode, we'll discuss the origin of church sanctuary and its first universal implementation, a rebellion in the exarchate that put Rome under direct threat, and the continued expansion of English evangelization.

"We're not saying people have to stop: we just wish they would." As the Christmas season approaches, we're thinking about our Christmas dinner: a roasted Gregg Wallace, too much sriracha sauce and Neopolitan layered Angel's Delight pudding in an ornate crystal bowl. This week, we get into TV cooks who use too many utensils and the differences in portion control between gourmet cooking and cooking at home, cover versions versus originals and those slow piano covers for John Lewis ads, inventive ways of eating Angel's Delight, and calling people cockwombles, wankspatulas, twunts, and the like.

Join Caroline Wilson and Corrie Perkin for Ep 54. We kick off the show with a healthy dose of housekeeping this week and touch on week one of the AFL Finals and the experience of watching the footy with politicians. Is sexism at play as candidates jostle for position in the seat of Wentworth? How will the new Morrison government deal with their first big challenge? And how do we feel about positive discrimination? Caro and Corrie have some strong views on Serena Williams and her outburst at the US Open and we discuss the furore surrounding Mark Knight’s controversial cartoon depicting the dummy spit. Seventeen years on from the September 11 terrorist attacks we reflect on the day that changed the world, plus Caro shares her thoughts on the twin towers memorial. Caro’s “Crush of the Week” is Bob Woodward thanks to The Interchange Bench - recruit the best staff with The Interchange Bench. Call 1800 i BENCH to get in touch with them today or check out their website HERE. In “BSF” - Caro’s hooked on Elena Ferrante’s Neopolitan novel having just read ‘The Story of a New Name’, Corrie’s got family viewing in mind as she recommends ‘Queer Eye’ on Netflix and take a sneak peak of Yotam Ottolenghi’s new cook book ‘Simple’ and share a delicious asparagus recipe (see recipe below). 'Simple' is available now at all good bookstores or you can purchase it from Corrie's store HERE. The anonymous op-ed in the New York times by a Trump insider is making Corrie grumpy this week and in “Six Quick Questions” we talk political sprays, annoying food terms, impactful issues-based advertising, the best Sam Neil films and Theresa May’s daggy dancing. Corrie also shares a “GLT” podcast tip that’s a must for book lovers - 'The High Low' podcast. Don't Shoot The Messenger is produced, engineered and edited by Jane Nield for Crocmedia. Email the show feedback@dontshootpod.com.au Roasted Asparagus with almonds, capers and dill From Yotam Ottolenghi ‘Simple’ Serves four as a side 600g asparagus, woody ends trimmed (400g) 3 tbsp olive oil 30g unsalted butter 20g flaked almonds 30g baby capers (or regular) pat-dried on kitchen paper 10g dill, roughly chopped Salt and black pepper Preheat the oven to 200C (fan forced) 1. Mix the asparagus with 1 tablespoon of oil, a generous pinch of salt and a good grin of pepper. Arrange on a large parchment-lined baking tray, spaced well apart, and roast for 8-12 minutes (timing will vary depending on the thickness of the stalks), until the asparagus is soft and starting to brown in places. Transfer to a large serving plate and set aside. 2. Put butter into a small saucepan and place on a medium high heat. Once melted, add the almonds and fry for 1-2 minutes, stirring frequently until the almonds are golden-brown. Pour almonds and butter evenly over the asparagus. 3. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil to the saucepan and place on a high heat. Once hot, add the capers and fry for 1-2 minutes, stirring continuously, until they have opened up and become crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove the capers from the oil and sprinkle over the asparagus, along with the dill. Discard the oil and serve warm.
Can tech entrepreneurs revitalise Southern Italy's failing economy? Manuela Saragosa visits Naples – which has seen a huge exodus of its talented young people – to explore if a change of direction might be possible. She meets Neapolitans starting up high-tech businesses against the odds and explores why, rather surprisingly, in recent years the city has attracted significant foreign investment from big tech firms. What has been the city's appeal? She also asks what the business reasons are for building a company in Naples rather than elsewhere. Can the benefits outweigh all the myriad problems? Producer: Rosamund Jones

Welcome to Episode 47 of Teaching Your Brain to Knit Brainy thing: 11:29 Behind the Redwood Curtain 21:56 What We’re Learning from Our Knitting Margaret has been looking for modifications of the Afterthought Heel to prevent (or reduce) those strained stitches in the corner. She found Afterthought Heels Revisited (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/afterthought-heels-revisited) by Laura Linneman of the Kinitgirlllls (yes, three “l”s) Podcast fame and the Knit Better Socks blog by RMD (http://knitbettersocks.blogspot.com/2011/12/improving-afterthought-or-forethought.html). She used Vesper yarn in a color way she calls “Neopolitan ice cream with blueberries”— pink, blue white and blue. Catherine finished up her Double Lattice Dishcloths by SmarieK (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/double-lattice-cloth). She used various leftovers from Knit Picks and Peaches and Cream The Brainy Thing: Breathing and the Brain Margaret was inspired by this topic by Memletics writer Sean Whitely which unfortunately had no references. So she looked for some research the (self evident) idea that breathing would help your brain function. At Villa Cappelli, we often surround ourselves with stereotypical Italian music like pizzica or Neopolitan classics, but when guest Michael Hynes visited, we were entertained with the likes of Elton John, Billy Joel and more! It was another magical moment with our guests, and hopefully, the podcast captures even just a little bit of that. Topics we cover: How guests surprise us with their talents here at Villa Cappelli, including our latest guest from Australia, Michael Hynes How Steven has never tried Vegemite What Vegemite is actually like How we "discovered" Michael talent at the piano How Michael can easily memorize the songs, but is slower in memorizing the lyrics Paul's favorite song from his Catholic Confirmation (and yes, he really does sing in during the episode) Michael is a human jukebox, knowing over 500 songs!!! How Steven couldn't memorize a song for the life of him during high school band Michael doesn't consider himself a genius, but the writers of the songs are the geniuses How we got our piano at Villa Cappelli, especially since neither Paul nor Steven play Other guests have also just sat down at the piano and started playing Mike plays Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen Here is Leonard's version, but dare I say I like Michael's better? Here are the lyrics for those die-hard fans: "Hallelujah" Now I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah You say I took the name in vain I don't even know the name But if I did, well really, what's it to you? There's a blaze of light In every word It doesn't matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you And even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah The pianos that Michael has at home Michael's whole family is musically inclined The amazing organ in the Terlizzi cathedral The day of shopping Paul and Michael did Steven's theory on why some Italian Americans call pasta sauce "gravy" How the Italians and Irish never got along, until.... Some Australian slang A little about the cockney rhyming slang Michael sings a bit of "I get no kick from champagne" A bit about songwriters and how songwriters and lyrists work together The mural discovered in Terlizzi showing the story of Joseph and his multi-colored coat Paul's experience seeing an Elton John concert Michael sings "Candle in the wind" Goodbye Norma Jean Though I never knew you at all You had the grace to hold yourself While those around you crawled They crawled out of the woodwork And they whispered into your brain They set you on the treadmill And they made you change your name And it seems to me you lived your life Like a candle in the wind Never knowing who to cling to When the rain set in And I would have liked to have known you But I was just a kid Your candle burned out long before Your legend ever did Loneliness was tough The toughest role you ever played Hollywood created a superstar And pain was the price you paid Even when you died Oh the press still hounded you All the papers had to say Was that Marilyn was found in the nude Goodbye Norma Jean From the young man in the 22nd row Who sees you as something as more than sexual More than just our Marilyn Monroe Written by Bernie Taupin, Elton John • Copyright © Universal Music Publishing Group Why Paul believes that song has done more for Marilyn's legend than anything else The famous castrato from Terlizzi Three of Paul's most memorable concerts 1. Three Dog Night And Michael sings a bit of "Joy to the World (Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog)" 2. Watkins Glen Racetrack with 700,000 people Billy Joel at Carnegie Hall A Michael sings "New York State of Mind" Some folks like to get away Take a holiday from the neighborhood Hop a flight to Miami Beach Or to Hollywood But I'm taking a Greyhound On the Hudson River Line I'm in a New York state of mind I've seen all the movie stars In their fancy cars and their limousines Been high in the Rockies under the evergreens But I know what I'm needing And I don't want to waste more time I'm in a New York state of mind It was so easy living day by day Out of touch with the rhythm and blues But now I need a little give and take The New York Times, The Daily News It comes down to reality And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide Don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside I don't have any reasons I've left them all behind I'm in a New York state of mind It was so easy living day by day Out of touch with the rhythm and blues But now I need a little give and take The New York Times, The Daily News It comes down to reality And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide Don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside I don't have any reasons I've left them all behind I'm in a New York state of mind I'm just taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River Line 'Cause I'm in a New York state of mind And finally, Michaels sings us out with "Somebody to love" Can anybody find me somebody to love? Each morning I get up I die a little Can barely stand on my feet (take a look at yourself) Take a look in the mirror and cry Lord, what you're doing to me I have spent all my years in believing you But I just can't get no relief, Lord! Somebody, somebody Can anybody find me somebody to love? I work hard (he works hard) every day of my life I work 'til I ache my bones At the end (at the end of the day) I take home my hard-earned pay all on my own I get down (down) on my knees (knees) And I start to pray (praise the Lord) 'Til the tears run down from my eyes Lord, somebody, somebody (please) Can anybody find me somebody to love? (he works hard) everyday (everyday) I try, and I try, and I try But everybody wants to put me down They say I'm goin' crazy They say I got a lot of water in my brain I got no common sense I got nobody left to believe in Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Oh, Lord Somebody, somebody Can anybody find me somebody to love? (Can anybody find me someone to love) Got no feel, I got no rhythm I just keep losing my beat (you just keep losing and losing) I'm OK, I'm alright (he's alright, he's alright) I ain't gonna face no defeat I just gotta get out of this prison cell One day (someday) I'm gonna be free, Lord! Find me somebody to love [repeat] Can anybody find me somebody to love? Some pics of Michael and Tanya during their stay with us: What did you think of our non stereotypical Italian music? This episode's guest, Will, chose a Neopolitan milkshake from In N Out. He maybe had one of the (literal) shittiest job in high school and he has me to thank for playing matchmaker. We also get #real and talk about #oscarssowhite. More importantly, you'll find out which GOP presidential candidate he'd smooch.

The 37th Avenue Red Podcast comes from Force Placement (real name Jason James) from the West side of Los Angeles in California, USA. Jason has been DJ'ing regularly around his massive metropolitan hometown since his late teens over a decade ago. He sent us this mix and we liked the selection and felt it added something unique to the series, a vinyl-only mix fusing House & Techno that is deep, rhythmic and strange with lots of spacey melodic tracks scattered throughout. We took out some time to have a brief Q & A with Jason about the mix, how's tricks and what's been happening in the music world over in Los Angeles! Q. Hi Jason! What is the music scene like in LA for Electronica/House/Techno at the moment? It's a massive city so you'd imagine there to be a lot going on? A. The scene is pretty vibrant right now, lots of great underground events and solid bookings every weekend. Recent events that come to mind have had Bok Bok, Jacques Renault, Untold, Max Graef, Gerry Read etc. For a while it was mostly illicit warehouse parties but the cops started busting them more so it's died down a bit in that respect, but still lots of great events at bars/clubs to check out. Q. I read that in LA, the clubs closed at 2am which gave rise to a culture of illegal warehouse parties. Is that what you are referring to that "died down"? A. Yea clubs close at 2. It's state law in California so people threw illegal parties but the LAPD started cracking down on them hard. Resident Advisor did an article about it (http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=25170). They talk about the Omar-S party that got busted, I was there! There were like 20 cop cars and helicopters flying around, shit was crazy! Q. So, have you played at any gigs that got busted? A. Never. But it would be seriously frustrating! I know that it can be pretty devastating for the promoters here too. However, we have a deal worked out with the venue for our Black Lodge parties so we can go past 2. Q. So does this early closure time encourage an after-party culture that spills out into house parties? Does this help relatively unknown DJ's get noticed at after-parties where DJ's/promoters end up after a 2am close? A. Yeah definitely, there is a massive after-hours culture! I suppose it can actually help DJ's to get that initial exposure, more visibility/recognition in the underground scene. Q. Could you say a couple of words about your Black Lodge party you mentioned and how it started? What's the format and music policy? A. Black Lodge was my buddy Vikas Malhotra's (aka Kosmik) concept and he asked me to help out. He's a good friend of mine from when I lived in Santa Barbara. The music format is primarily underground house/techno music. We try to emphasize playing vinyl there too. The venue is a very unique one-of-a-kind space, it looks like a haunted library or something! It can only fit like 50 people max, a very intimate space ideal for what we are trying to do. Q. To you personally, is the vinyl format important? Do you think that vinyl DJ'ing is getting more popular in LA like it certainly is over here in Europe, or is it in decline maybe? A. I enjoy the challenge of playing vinyl, but the format isn't important. The selection is more important than what you use in my view. There are some cool record stores here but I'm not sure if I'd say it's getting more popular. Sadly a few established stores have closed here in recent years but a few new ones have emerged too, however few of them specialize in dance music. Q. I noticed that you play regularly at that venue called Complex in LA and have a gig there tonight, right? A. Yea I've been getting some cool gigs there recently! I'm opening for Ital (Planet Mu) and Aurora Halal (Mutual Dreaming) tonight. I'm also playing a party at Complex on 30th April for an event called "That's Deck", opening for Stefan Ringer (NDATL, CGI Recordings), Cromie (Peach) and An Expresso (L2S Recordings) (info on that here: http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=28935). April's shaped up to be a busy month for sure! Q. Have you ventured into production works at all? A. Sure have, I have been experimenting with making music since I was 16 but only recently started taking it more seriously. I have just put a track out called Neopolitan on this LP that is available to download here: https://la909.bandcamp.com/album/l-a-909-friends-vol-1 Q. Thanks for the mix, the track (which is ace!) and the chat, hope tonight goes well bro! Any final words about the mix? A. Thanks! Right now I've got my decks set up in my kitchen and I recorded this mix while sipping tea and baking some tilapia. Vinyl-only. Please enjoy, thanks! Jason James, April 2015 @forceplacement ===== Full tracklist for this mix coming soon, but do feel free to ask for track ID's in the comments in the meantime.

In 1702, the 19-year-old Philip V of Spain came from his native France to Naples for a month. For this occasion, the Neopolitan based composer Alessandro Scarlatti was joined by the other great Italian composer of the day, Arcangelo Corelli, with mixed results! On the 350th anniversary of Scarlatti's birth, Catherine Bott explores the stories that surround the music and entertainments put on for this occasion.
Kelli O'Hara, Broadway star of The Bridges of Madison County joins host Robin Milling backstage at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York City. Kelli tells Robin her dressing room is decorated with photographic inspirations to put her into the mindset of Francesca like a map of Italy, an 18th century Italian sketch, as well as a picture of the actual Rosamund Bridge in Iowa where Robert (played by Steven Pasquale) and Francesa meet. Born in Oklahoma on a farm where she chopped cotton and was the 'official lawn girl'; she and her sister would harmonize through the aisles of the cotton fields ironically singing 'Love Could Build A Bridge.' Kelli could tap into Francesca's farm life, but slipping into her lilting Neopolitan accent combined with a bit of Americana happens when she says 'Francesa,' puts on a brown wig over her blonde locks, darkens her eyebrows and wears a farmwife's dress. She also has a ritual on her walk to the stage of reading all the signs on the wall in her accent like, 'stage right,' or 'no toaster ovens please!' Having a new addition to the family and loving relationship with her husband, Greg Naughton enriches her with love and emotion which she brings into the role of Francesca. She says, “I don't think I could've played this role without having what's going on in my personal life right now. You come to a place in your life where everything is just at the right time.” Click here for your free audiobook www.audibletrial.com/millingabout Photos courtesy of Joan Marcus

Italian love songs by Donizetti, Tosti, and Gastaldon Mozart: Divertimento in D Major for horns and stringsMusic is often written in celebration—of an emotion, an event, a rite of passage—and today we’ll listen to pieces written to celebrate these occasions. When you talk about Italian vocal music, you are almost always dealing with love. The first song in the set, “Me voglio fa’ ‘na casa” by Donizetti, captures the free spirit of a sailor’s love. The poetry, written in the Neopolitan dialect, adds a folk sensibility to this as well as the next song, “A’ Vucchella” by Tosti. In the last song in the set, “Musica Proibita” by Stanislao Gastaldon, we get perhaps the lustiest declarations, in words so provocative that a mother forbids her young daughter to sing them! After that, a celebration of a very different sort. Mozart wrote this Divertimento in D Major for horns and strings, in part, to mark the graduation of his friend Sigmund Robinig from law school, according to the All Music Guide. The work’s substantial instrumentation—with bass in addition to cello—and its larger-than-average proportions for a divertimento make it a particularly satisfying sample of Mozart’s work in this genre.
