The New Standards are a jazz-adjacent trio featuring John Munson (bass and vocals), Chan Poling (piano and vocals), and Steve Roehm (vibes). Though the group has plenty of rock'n'roll pedigrees on their resume, all the members have a deep love and knowledge of jazz. The New Standards rely on that love of jazz and the song suggestions they receive from their musical guests to craft a celebrated annual holiday show. This year the concerts are at the State Theatre on December 6 and 7th, including a matinee on the 7th.

“Closing time, you don't have to go home but you can't, stay, here!” Semisonic, they had one of the biggest songs of the 90's Closing Time. You know it, you've heard it in a half dozen movies and even in an episode of The Office. We can all sing it, and it has become the go-to song when bar owners are looking to send us on our way at the end of the night. Semisonic (which consists of Dan Wilson, John Munson and Jacob Slichter) hit the scene hard in 1998 with their album Feeling Strangely Fine, and this week we were honored to have the opportunity to sit and chat with Jacob Slichter about the band, the song, and what they are up to today! We recommend everyone checking these guys out! They are a great band, fantastic music and they are o tour this summer with the Barenaked Ladies! Come experience one of the greatest decades of all, the 90's and enjoy some great music with an iconic band! We are The Mix Tape Podcast! Please leave a review and share the show! Marc and Sam enjoy a free flowing conversation with John Munson. John has been a successful part of the Minnesota music scene for decades. He's played around the world and still makes our fair state his home. Listen and you will understand why he is so well liked and respected by so many people.
We kick off Season 3 with a very special guest, John Munson of Semisonic. (Also of Trip Shakespeare, The New Standards, Munson Hicks Party Supplies, The Twilight Hours). Instead of talking about one soundtrack, we talk about the different soundtracks that Semisonic has appeared in. While John doesn't have all the details about how the band ended up on every soundtrack, he shares some fun behind the scenes stories. We chat about the excitement of being placed on a soundtrack for the first time (The Long Kiss Goodnight), what soundtracks John regrets the band passing on, and his favorite placement of "Closing Time" in a film/tv show. We also talk about some film score related projects that John is working on outside of Semisonic and he shares about a soundtrack that has changed his life. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/soundtrackyourlife/support

Trip Shakespeare Podcast - the ORIGIN episode! Host Morgan Taylor and Trip Shakespeare bassist and singer, John Munson, begin discussions about the new archive site with a focus on one memorable show: Huntsville, Alabama in the Autumn of 1988.
During this time of isolation, art has become more important than ever. Music, movies and literature have provided more than just a distraction, they help us feel connected with each other. But what's it like for a musician during this time, when the curtains have been closed on all performances and there are few outlets for collaboration or creation? In this episode, Brian Lucas interviews John Munson, one of the most prolific and revered musicians in Minnesota. John first rose to prominence as the bass player in Trip Shakespeare and later in the band Semisonic. Today he is involved in numerous projects and collaborations, most notably as a member of the renowned jazz trio, the New Standards.
The song “Closing Time” by the American rock band Semisonic came out in March 1998. It hit #1 on the Alternative charts, and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Song. It gets played in stadiums, Weird Al covered it, and it’s the last song of the night in countless bars. Since then, Dan Wilson, the lead singer and songwriter of Semisonic, has become a powerhouse songwriter who has written or co-written for artists like John Legend and Taylor Swift. And he’s won Grammys for his songwriting with the Dixie Chicks and Adele. But over two decades ago, Dan and his bandmates John Munson and Jacob Slichter were in Minneapolis, getting ready to start work on their second album, Feeling Strangely Fine. In this episode of Song Exploder, Dan breaks down how that process led to "Closing Time." songexploder.net/semisonic

For the message, John Munson introduced Francisco Aquirre on behalf of the Peace Committee. Francisco spent 81 days in Portland’s Augustana Lutheran Church to avoid detention by I.C.E. To avoid the threat of detention, Francisco’s son returned to El Salvador — and was murdered. Francisco has been in the U.S. for 21 years, and his case is still pending. He fears for his life if he is forced to return. He told us, "Sanctuary is more than hiding; it is providing resources to those who need help. If you see I.C.E. agents, ask them, 'What are you doing?'"
John Munson is in Semisonic, and yes, you do know that one song they had. Yet his music career has spanned many more bands and eras, and he's become one of Minneapolis's most-connected and best-liked musicians. Hearing him spin yarns is a blast, as is his perspective on where the recording industry has been and where it's going, if anywhere! Most famous for his songwriting in the new wave band The Suburbs, Emmy-winning composer Chan Poling has gravitated lately to performing pop music from other iconic songwriters. His jazz trio, The New Standards, features Chan on piano, John Munson (of Semisonic fame) on bass, and Steve Roehm on vibes. In episode 26 of Composer Quest, Chan talks with me about his arranging, songwriting, and film scoring.
This week, host John Moe chats with songwriter John Roderick. He's the lead singer and guitarist in The Long Winters, and the co-host of the podcast Roderick on the Line. We also hear Roderick perform his song Not Moving to Portland with our music director John Munson in a Wits appearance. Plus, an interview with War Horse about how many horses and bayonets the American military really needs.
