These days, large-scale high-production music festivals take over major cities and regularly attract crowds of every genre — including the current version of Lollapalooza that draws a casual 400,000 people to its resident Chicago stomping grounds. But kick it back a few decades and this kind of maximalist mega-show wasn't quite the norm it is now, especially for musical tastes outside of the mainstream. In their second collaborative book, Lollapalooza: The Uncensored Story of Alternative Rock's Wildest Festival, music journalists Richard Bienstock and Tom Beaujour flash back to when the Lollapalooza we know now was a new tour concept bringing 1990s alternative artists and ideas center stage. Lollapalooza first transports readers back to the festival's origins – a 20+ city summer sprawl highlighting alternative music, art, and counterculture, conceived by Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band Jane's Addiction. From 1991-1997, this breakthrough tour shifted the scope of live music experiences and helped forge a new path for the decade's subcultures to reach the masses and the media. Bienstock and Beaujour have compiled hundreds of new interviews to dig into the dirt of how the historic festival came into being at every level – from headlining artists and record label execs to tour organizers and promoters to freakshow performers, stage crews, and roadies. Lollapalooza is packed with gritty details of an era of shows that defied genres and drew crowds across style lines. Music, art, and politics drawing from alt-rock, goth, industrial, metal, punk, hip-hop, EDM, and avant-garde explorations – all coming together under one big tent. Featuring original interviews with iconic artists like Green Day, Patti Smith, Rage Against the Machine, Ice-T, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction, Tool, Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Metallica, and many more, this collection amplifies voices that helped shape generations of contemporary thinkers, creative activists, and live music audiences. Journeying through 90s nostalgia, uncensored first-hand accounts, and the long-term reverberations of a groundbreaking tour, Bienstock and Beaujour document a high-impact chapter of modern American music. A VIP pass to the action onstage and backstage, on the road and behind the scenes – Lollapalooza details the cultural shift of the alternative rock revolution and the echoes still heard through concert crowds today. Richard Bienstock is a journalist, musician, and author whose work has been featured in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Spin. He is the executive editor of Guitar Aficionado magazine and former senior editor of Guitar World and has authored and co-authored books including Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Slash: An Intimate Portrait.  Tom Beaujour is a journalist, music producer, and engineer who has been featured in television shows like Orange is the New Black, A Handmaid's Tale, and Criminal Minds. He is a co-founder and former editor-in-chief of Revolver and has contributed to Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Blender, and Billboard. He is the co-author of Nöthin' But a Good Time: The Uncensored History of the '80s Hard Rock Explosion, alongside Richard Bienstock. Mike Squires is a Seattle-based touring musician and the host of Couch Riffs Podcast since 2019. How do you stop winter blues from taking over your life? Rebecca and Seth Greene tackle winter survival mode in this fun episode of Whinypaluza on Wednesday! Rebecca dishes on her winter struggles (she's clearly not Buffalo's biggest fan this time of year) and shares all her personal hacks for making it through until spring. From cozy blanket nests to unexpected winter pick-me-ups, this conversation is packed with real-life ways to boost your mood when the cold weather's got you down. Key Takeaways: → Get cozy and embrace it! Wrap yourself in blankets with a hot drink, good book, or movie - Rebecca swears by this as her top winter survival strategy. → Move your body, even when it's freezing. Rebecca forces herself to walk outside, saying the fresh air and endorphins are worth bundling up for. → Change up your space! The Greenes repainted their walls from bold red/orange to calming blue/gray, and Rebecca says the peaceful vibes made a huge difference. → Cook up some comfort. Winter is prime time for kitchen therapy - the activity keeps you busy, and the delicious smells are instant mood boosters. → Light it up! Rebecca's all about brightness to beat the winter darkness - more lamps, twinkle lights, and even special light therapy can make a big difference. "I want you to get cozy, and think about it - what better time than winter to get cozy on your couch with a blanket, a hot coffee, and a good book or movie?" - Rebecca Greene "The cold therapy is actually a thing... going out in the cold and moving in the cold creates even more endorphins that make you happier." - Seth Greene Rebecca invites everyone to join the Whinypaluza Mom Facebook group for more support. She's also excited about Friday's podcast with Diane Sorenson on her "Beautiful Behavior Blueprint." It's that time of year! The cold weather, the snow, the inability to go outside to walk the dog or enjoy nature, the darkness that prevails morning and night, tax season, the election; it seems everything contributes to an ongoing sense of gloom and doom. While it's common to feel temporarily "blue," it's important to recognize when those feelings escalate into Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or clinical depression. For many, the winter months can be particularly challenging for mental health. Although we often hear the term "SAD," what are the actual diagnostic symptoms, and what effective remedies exist for managing this malady?Today's episode will take a deep dive into the mental health diagnosis of Seasonal Affective Disorder and explore the strategies that can help manage this condition. Our goal is to provide information that benefits not only those experiencing SAD, but also their friends and family who wish to offer support.Show Notes:https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/seasonal-affective-disorder.https://www.psychiatry.org/Patients-Families/Seasonal-Affective-Disorder.Https://Palousemindfulness.com.

The winter solstice was on June 20 and 21. The longest night and the shortest day, but wisdom tells us that the depths of winter does not fall until 6 weeks after the solstice. It takes a while for actions to provoke a reaction. So right now is the depths of winter and much is at the worst it has ever been and ever will be. The All Blacks lost. In front of a disappointing crowd. Many are saying the poor crowd was down to economic hardship in the capital as the Government wages war on the size of the public service. The public service in Wellington is being slashed to cut the government spending to help the economy. However, this is all happening just as the Reserve Bank tries to fix their Covid mistake. We're in a double squeeze.   In Covid, the Reserve Bank underestimated how well we'd operate under Covid lockdowns. With the benefit of hindsight, we know they splashed too much virtually free money. So now they have to strangle our economy after setting it on fire. It's debatable whether we needed a double squeeze. But here we are. Whipping ourselves big time for future good. Meanwhile, the country is low on power. A dry winter and our gas reserves running out means that energy-dependent industries are finding it hard to make a buck and some are now on hiatus.   Reality check. We need gas. A fossil fuel and we have no alternative. Labour had a policy but no alternative. But another reality check. From the discovery of gas to coming online takes at least 10 years, so today's shortage is on previous governments and gas companies. No matter what Simeon Brown says. We're still low on health workers and the cuts on government spending suggest we're not really going to splash cash on them. We're still importing 100,000 people every year and not increasing contingencies to cope with their demands, like housing and health. But we're more than happy to count whatever money they contribute to the economy. In John Key's years, they were called our rock star economy. To add to all of that we have one of the most negative governments I can remember who seem to enjoy telling us how bad we are and to blame it all on the past 6 years when the rot set in 30 years ago. They've followed a government that told us we had 9 years of neglect. No wonder we have a generation wanting to leave. Government after government promising the world and making no difference and telling us how rubbish we are. But then we watch our Olympians and their work ethic and we feel good. Then we discover that all regions are having an economic recovery. Except for Wellington for obvious reasons. And we have an OCR statement later this week. Could it be the long winter of discontent is finally over and we have green shoots and a good spring to come? New Zealand is where I want to be. We're not the cot case the Government portrays. We do need to rediscover our mojo. We need to stop saying no to good ideas. We need better public transport, we need more houses, we need more gas. We need to look after ourselves.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To say The Long Winters had some bad luck getting their music on vinyl would be an understatement: After a hurricane in the mid-2000's sent most copies of an exclusive box set into the Atlantic Ocean, the band struck a relationship last year with Bandbox -- an LP-subscription service doing limited, colored pressings of modern classics and out-of-print material -- only to have the company go suddenly belly-up, leaving the albums pressed, but under the ownership of Bandbox's investors, as collateral. Thankfully, Barsuk Records (the influential Seattle label which the band called home for their entire tenure) has come through with standard black pressings, allowing die-hard fans to finally add 2003's majestic and acclaimed When I Pretend to Fall and more of the catalog to their shelf. On today's show, Long Winters lead singer/guitarist and songwriter John Roderick dissects the Bandbox fiasco, his infatuation with acid rock at an early age, and how he recently ended up on a Las Vegas party bus with 90's rockers Ugly Kid Joe. Find more info on the Long Winters vinyl reissues at barsuk.com, check out the band's new rarities compilation So Good At Waiting wherever you stream music, and follow @johnroderick on Instagram and Threads.

On this week's show, we have a candid chat with Seattle indie rock musician-turned-podcaster (Roderick on the Line, Omnibus) John Roderick. The Long Winters frontman was an early Fretboard Journal subject and guest on our podcast. This time around, we talk about John's break from music-making, the new songs he's been writing, the perils of pedal collecting and so much more. We also reminisce about the PNW indie rock community of the late '90s when John often shared a bill with Death Cab for Cutie, discuss the challenges of getting the band together when you're all in your 50s, and learn about the hacks that may (or may not) overcome writer's block. Today I'm pleased to be joined by Evie Ladin, world-class banjo player and musician. Evie's coming to Peaks on March 29th as part of the Long Winter's Night Concert Series at the New Brackett Church at 7pm. In this interview, we talk about Evie's roots in music and movement and what folks can expect to hear at her performance. For details about Evie's latest album, check out evieladin.com I also want to update you on the results of the Spring Hop. If you went to the Hop, or listened to the last interview with Danielle and Sage, you know that they were raising funds for a community art event. Well, the Hop brought in approximately $750 - enough to host an Invitational Group Show at The Crow's Nest and Gathering Space. There are already 12 confirmed artists for the group show. It will run Friday May 24th starting with a reception that evening, and will be available weekends through Sunday June 2nd including Memorial Day hours on May 27th. Congrats to Danielle and Sage, and to everyone who participated in the fun night of dance. Hopefully there will be others to look forward to in the future! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/peaksislandradio/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/peaksislandradio/support

What to do about a world that's on fire all the time? Texas is facing the biggest wildfire in state history, Alberta has declared the start of wildfire season earlier than usual, and zombie fires are burning in B.C. John Vaillant has written about a future where "fire weather" is the only weather in a warming world; he says Canada needs to prepare. Then, we hear how Metis citizens and firefighters in Alberta are getting their communities and the forests ready for what this year's season could bring.

What makes a song a good road trip song? This is something Katy has been musing over for several years now.   What better person to ask than a musician who has crossed the country on tour numerous times?   This week, Katy sits down with musician and podcaster John Roderick to talk about the allure of the American road trip, as well as what you should listen to while you are doing it.   John talks about his experience hitchhiking across the US as a recent high school graduate, and even hopping on a freight train, and how it sparked a love for overland travel. Now that his band touring days are over, he has begun taking road trips again, this time with his 90-year-old mother and his 12-year-old daughter.   He also describes how, as a native Alaskan, the continental US often felt like a foreign country growing up and how that was one of the things that encouraged him to begin exploring the country. He also shares his simple strategy for introducing both order and randomness into a road trip, as well as taking you places you wouldn't otherwise go.   John Roderick is the co-host of Roderick on the Line and Omnibus with Ken Jennings. He is the lead singer and songwriter for The Long Winters and has also toured with the band Harvey Danger. Is this book really "timeless," or is it like old, outdated science? Also, what kind of person becomes an ancient philosophy student? Plus (in the full discussion), we talk more about Mounk, Presidential disqualification, and more.
