There's something special about a snow day… unexpected, memorable, and a break from routine. In this episode, Mark borrows a few classic snow-day moments to explain what a strong financial plan really provides. When your plan is solid, you can handle the hard parts, enjoy the good ones, and stay steady when conditions change. Snow days don't last forever, but the freedom they create is worth planning for. Here's some of what we discuss in this episode: ❄️ Financial Foundations: How preparation creates flexibility

What do snowstorms, canceled services, and accidental “rapture livestreams” have to do with spiritual rest? Quite a bit, actually. In this episode of Chasing the Rabbit, the pastors of First Baptist Church of the Islands reflect on an unexpected snowy weekend in Savannah and let the conversation drift (as it always does) into something deeper: the urgent need for rest, rhythms, and refueling—especially for those in ministry. As the team looks ahead to a local ministry conference, they talk candidly about burnout, busyness, Sabbath principles, and the difference between physical rest and soul rest. Along the way, they wrestle with questions many leaders feel but don't always voice:How do you know when your tank is running empty? Why does busyness feel like success in our culture? What does biblical rest actually look like under the New Covenant? And how do we create healthy rhythms that sustain us for the long haul? The conversation is grounded in Scripture and shaped by insights from several influential books, including:Leading On Empty by Wayne CordeiroThe Wisdom Pyramid by Brett McCrackenThe Common Rule by Justin Whitmel EarleyWhether you're a pastor, ministry leader, volunteer, or just someone feeling stretched thin, this episode is an encouraging reminder that rest is not weakness—it's wisdom. God doesn't just command rest; He invites us into it.So slow down, take a breath, and chase this rabbit with us.

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, we're talking about a little bit of everything. We start with Austin's first real snow day (at least since we've lived here lol) and how snow days feel wildly different as a kid vs. as a parent. We talk Dry January, whether it's rude to ask someone why they don't drink, and a truly wild babysitting story involving lime-a-ritas (the liability alone???). Then it's parenting and pregnancy updates: how every family develops its own language (how Tate became “BUBBERS”), why we're capping naps at 16 months, the “unzipping the sleep sack” phase, what's helped vs. not helped with pregnancy restless leg, and the differences between boy vs. girl pregnancies (cravings, skin, fatigue, emotions, pregnancy brain). We wrap with the fun stuff as always: Harrison's cookbook era, a great welcome-to-the-neighborhood gift idea, our ongoing couch and dining table saga, Dad's first attempt at pigtails, Bicker of the Week, and two Things We DMed Each Other that left us speechless. It's a snow day, Slackers! This episode is all about some of the wildest weather moments the U.S. has seen from 1965 right up to now. The standout blizzards, hurricanes, and tornado outbreaks that have hit hard, shut down cities, reshaped coastlines, and left people talking about them for decades. These storms actually changed lives and showed just how powerful nature can get, especially in places you wouldn't always expect.Take the Great Blizzard of 1978—snow piled so high (I took a sled out a second story bedroom window), screaming winds, and basically ground the entire region to a halt for days. Or jump ahead to Hurricane Gloria in '85, which rolled up the coast and knocked out power across a big chunk of New England, including right here in Massachusetts. And then there's the 2011 Springfield tornado, a rare beast for this part of the country that tore straight through towns and downtown areas, reminding everyone that even the Northeast isn't immune to serious twisters. The takeaway is simple: these events keep teaching us tough lessons about staying ready. Weather doesn't mess around, and the more we remember the big ones, the better we can handle whatever comes next. It's a mix of respect for the Old Mother Earth and a little hope that we're getting smarter about facing it.

In a recent episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael welcomes Elise Stine Dolinar, the driving force behind Bright Futures Frederick/Winchester. Their conversation, happening against the backdrop of the annual "Camping for Hunger" week, delves into the heart of a community initiative that goes far beyond simply filling backpacks with food. Bright Futures, as Elise passionately explains, is dedicated to ensuring that every student—regardless of circumstance—has access to the essentials they need to succeed in school and in life. The Weekend Food Pack Program: Logistics and Love At the core of Bright Futures' efforts is the weekend food pack program. Each week, volunteers assemble over a thousand bags of shelf-stable, allergy-conscious food items. These bags are discreetly placed in students' backpacks, ensuring that children who might otherwise go hungry have enough to eat until school resumes. Elise describes the logistical ballet required to coordinate donations, manage inventory, and accommodate special dietary needs. The program's success hinges on the generosity of local donors and the tireless work of school staff and volunteers. Beyond Hunger: Clothing, Hygiene, and Dignity However, Bright Futures' mission doesn't stop at food. Elise and her team respond to a wide range of student needs, from winter coats and shoes to hygiene products and even sleeping bags for homeless youth. The organization works closely with school counselors, who act as the eyes and ears on the ground, identifying students in need and maintaining their privacy. This system ensures that help is delivered quickly and discreetly, preserving the dignity of every child. Community Collaboration: Volunteers and Donors Step Up Transitioning from logistics to community impact, Janet and Elise highlight the crucial role of volunteers and donors. Whether it's a church group packing food bags, individuals donating new coats or clearing out store shelves during sales, the community's involvement is the lifeblood of Bright Futures. Elise shares stories of last-minute shopping trips for shoes and the creative ways the team stretches every dollar, often leveraging partnerships with organizations like the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to maximize the impact of cash donations. Facing Challenges: Holidays, Snow Days, and the Unexpected The conversation also addresses the unique challenges posed by school breaks and unexpected closures. Elise explains how Bright Futures prepares special food boxes for holidays and adapts quickly when snow days disrupt their carefully planned schedules. Flexibility and foresight are essential, as is the unwavering commitment to never turn away a child in need. Empowering Students and Staff As the conversation wraps up, Elise emphasizes the importance of empowering both students and school staff. In-school food pantries allow older students to access food independently, while donations help relieve the financial burden on teachers and counselors who often dip into their own pockets to help students. The organization's work, Elise notes, is only possible thanks to the "angels in the schools" and the broader community that believes in supporting every child. A Call to Action Ultimately, this conversation shines a light on the power of community action. Bright Futures stands as a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with compassion, creativity, and a shared vision. As Janet and Elise urge, whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, everyone has a role to play in ensuring that no child is left behind.
