3 Things you NEED In Your Pole Practice Sign up for Rekindle by the 18th for two FREE extra no-equipment pole conditioning classes (including recordings!): https://www.slinkthroughstrength.com/rekindle-your-passion-for-pole Welcome to this week's episode of The Evidence Based Pole Podcast through Slink Through Strength. This week we will be discussing the 3 essential aspects of pole growth. The 3 things you need are conditioning, challenge, and PLAY. We will explore what to explore on and off the pole and how these 3 pieces come together. Conditioning is essential to pole, I offer these classes if you'd like to explore this together! Conditioning is: Strength, off the pole, Flexability, off the pole, Power/agility, off the pole, Speed, Coordination on the pole, Endurance, on the pole! (but not your hardest possible tricks), Cardio, on the pole, Balance on the pole/heels Challenge gives us the space for growth through exploration! One component of challenge is Technical exploration. Technical exploration is NOT synonymous with conditioning; it *should* be separate, this exploration is Learning new pole moves, Refining existing moves, and Learning transitions This is the point of Pole Pathways classes; my structure means you don't need a super well-conditioned baseline to work on something challenging for you Another component of Challenge is Artistic exploration. This includes Freestyle, Learning choreography, Dancing to different music, and Embody different characters (This is the point of Freestyle Flow characters) Play is essential not only to your pole practice but also your life! Challenge is *not* the point of play time, play is! Play helps us build emotional resilience and helps to cope with stress; Social play in particular may be beneficial for adults with mental illness. Play is also linked to greater life satisfaction, physical fitness, creativity, and happiness Find more play in Pole by Poling with friends, Putting aside the need to be good, not giving yourself limitations or rules, and Taking my Freestyle Flow classes! Meet Kyle Poling, Field Botanist at The Understory Initiative and owner of Dry Earth Nursery. He is a self-taught botanist, passionate conservationist, and avid gardener. He volunteers with the Pollinator Project Rogue Valley and Southern Oregon Monarch Advocates. Upcoming Events: The PPRV Native Plant Sale, Sunday May 7th 10-4pm at our office in Phoenix. It's a “farmers market” style plant sale for small, local, native plant nurseries to sell their plants. Kyle will be there! FYI: I'm a fairly introverted lover of plants (like most plant people!) but put myself “out there” because of the importance of teaching people about native plants and how they benefit the local ecosystem. Even in a small backyard garden. This is probably the topic I would be most interested in talking about. I could also talk about my side-hustle nursery DEN and the work that TUI is doing locally to restore the land. Outside of just business, I'm a crazy gardener with over 1000 plants of all different types, cold-hardy cacti, carnivorous species, natives, edibles, houseplants, a little of everything... I'm also an animal lover with lots of pets and a history of working on farms. Lastly, I'm fascinated with native pollinators (not invasive European honeybees although at one point, before I knew what I do now about how they compete with the native species, I did keep a backyard hive but sold it for mason bee boxes). If anyone wants to volunteer with TUI they can sign up to be on the email list through the TUI website. It may just be a smattering of insignificant rocks and reefs along the Nine-dash line between the Philippines and China, but in recent years this area has become the focus of the world's most complex and dangerous maritime dispute. China's growing influence and willingness to project its will against smaller neighbors and US allies has drawn Washington into a set of intersecting disputes, while placing significant pressure on America's commitment to established international law regarding open seas. This week on Departures we are pleased to feature Gregory Poling, the Southeast Asia Program and Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. Poling is the author of the new book, "On Dangerous Ground: America's Century in the South China Sea," which offers a detailed and highly engaging history of Washington's involvement in this part of the world and how the current tensions evolved from past unsettled issues. Poling's book takes issue with the China-centric narrative which has become embedded in the global conversation about these territorial claims, and puts the focus on strategic decisionmaking happening not just in Beijing and Washington, but also among many other smaller neighboring Southeast Asian countries with interests at play.
A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - Pope Francis and local Church leaders on Monday reacted with dismay and calls for prayer following a devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. According to Reuters, the series of earthquakes — up to 7.8 magnitude — killed about 5,400 people and injured thousands more, with many people still trapped under the rubble. A “deeply saddened” Pope Francis sent “heartfelt condolences to those who mourn their loss” in telegrams addressed to the apostolic nuncios of Turkey and Syria. Among the many victims, the body of Father Imad Daher, a priest of the Greek Melkite Catholic Parish of Our Lady, was found under the rubble — after many hours of searching for the priest. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253564/pope-francis-syriac-patriarch-call-for-prayers-after-devastating-earthquakes-in-turkey-and-syria A crowd of military veterans, their families, and Boy Scouts filled a New Jersey parish church on Sunday to honor the “Four Chaplains” — a band of men of different faiths who all sacrificed their lives to save others on the torpedoed USAT Dorchester 80 years ago. The Four Chaplains — Father John P Washington, a Catholic priest; Reverend George L Fox, a Methodist minister; Rabbi Alexander D Goode; and Reverend Clark V Poling, a Reformed Church in America minister — gave their life jackets to save others when their ship was torpedoed in the frigid North Atlantic in 1943. The Mass commemorating the 80th anniversary of the chaplains' sacrifice took place at St. Stephen's Church in Kearney, New Jersey — the last parish where Washington served before being dispatched for war. Washington, Fox, Goode, and Poling, all first lieutenants, met in 1942, having been inspired to sign up as military chaplains after Pearl Harbor. Their vessel, the Dorchester, a troop ship bound for a US military base in Greenland, was struck by a U-boat torpedo in the early morning hours of February 3, 1943. Washington had celebrated Mass just hours before the hit and began to offer absolution. The chaplains calmly assisted and encouraged numerous civilians and soldiers, offering them their own life jackets as the terrified crowd sped to the lifeboats. In 1944, all four men posthumously received the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253569/the-four-chaplains-selfless-heroes-of-wwii-honored-for-sacrifice-80-years-ago Today, the Church celebrates Saint Richard, the father of Saints Willibald, Winnebald, and Walburga. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-richard-140

We're talking with two pastors who are experimenting with VR at their church. First up is Gerald Faulkner, who has just started to implement VR at his church in North Carolina. And then we chat with with Jason Poling. Jason is the Lead Pastor at Cornerstone Yuba City, in Yuba City, CA. They both have a full VR campus and are staffing the campus just like they would a physical campus. At both of these churches, these pastors believe the Church can be anywhere at anytime with anyone - even in the MetaVerse. These are pastors that are reaching people for Jesus in a VR world. We're excited to have them on the show! SHOW NOTES --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/makingsundayhappen/support
