The conflict in Ukraine is moving markets worldwide, driving the oil price to its highest level in more than seven years. But what does this mean for investors, and how might it impact inflation globally, when the cost of living is already rising? In this episode, we explain why it is dangerous to get caught up in any particular inflation story, and why we believe that global inflation – led by the US – is much more systemically important for the fate of risk assets. Our expert panel includes: •            Tim Drayson, Head of Economics •            Colin Reedie, Head of Active Strategies •            John Roe, Head of Multi-Asset Funds •            Chris Jeffery, Head of Inflation and Rates Strategy •            Laura Brown, Head of Client Solutions

Jonathan Keehner and John Roe, partners at strategic communications and investor relations firm Joele Frank, were guests on the latest edition of the Nareit REIT Report podcast. Nareit has worked with Joele Frank to create a Communications Toolkit with a framework for developing an effective communications strategy for generalist investors. It was recently distributed to Nareit members. Keehner described what he sees as a “real disparity between the dedicated investor group and the generalist group.” To help alleviate that gap, he suggests REITs “hit the reset button” and really focus on communicating what makes their company unique. “It’s about introducing the story and making it compelling, it’s about leveraging the exciting aspects of a portfolio to draw in a new audience,” Keehner said. At the same time, he recommends that REITs take a fresh look at their IR exposure: “It’s [about] doubling down on the existing investor base and then thinking creatively about ways to engage with a new investor base.”

In an episode earlier this year, Howie Li and John Roe discussed (https://protect-eu.mimecast.com/s/-hvkCgLGqTWPXVhKZjwM?domain=embeds.audioboom.com) what separates long-term investment themes from fads. As Howie explains, the enduring themes are those that are changing the foundations of how we live and work – from disruptive technology to the energy revolution and demographic shifts. Yet capturing these themes in an investment strategy is not easy, so in this episode Howie addresses some recurring questions we’ve received from listeners and clients. How do we avoid companies exploiting thematic buzzwords for their own marketing purposes rather than genuinely innovating? What is the difference between a thematic and a sector-based investment strategy? How can investors integrate themes into their portfolios? Is it possible to time exposure to themes? Howie covers all these challenging topics and more in this conversation, while also sharing practical examples of how we can put the theory of thematic investing into practice. On the Relationship between Ketones and Pediatric Oncology—Adrienne Scheck, PhD—Phoenix Children's Research Institute, Arizona College of Medicine, Cancer Biology Program at the University of Arizona

For nearly a decade now, Adrienne Scheck, Ph.D. has focused her research on the effect of ketones and the ketogenic diet on brain tumors. As the author of Cancer and the Ketogenic Diet, senior research scientist at the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Phoenix Children's Research Institute, research associate professor at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, adjunct professor at Arizona State University, and associate investigator in the cancer biology program at the University of Arizona, she brings an impressive amount of experience and knowledge to the discussion today. Her research on the effect of ketones on cancerous tumors began in collaboration with Dr. John Roe, a clinician, scientist, and expert in the field who at the time had only applied the use to ketones to the treatment of epilepsy. When they studied the effects of adding ketones to an aggressive brain cancer cell line, the results were surprisingly positive: significant enhancement of the effectiveness of chemotherapy. This opened the door to many other questions yet to be investigated, such as the role of ketones as epigenetic modifiers, the confirmation of DNA within cells and how it dictates susceptibility to damage, whether or not cancer cells can use ketones as an energy source, phenotypic differences between different types of tumors, and the coming advances in technology that will lead to better data and analyses in this area. Press play for all the details and search for Adrienne Scheck online to stay up to date with her latest research.
