At the beginning of the year, a narrative of US exceptionalism was the consensus among many market participants. However, significant policy uncertainty emanating from the Trump administration has driven a significant rotation away from US risk assets and sent shockwaves around the global economy. What can investors conclude from the turbulence of the first quarter of 2025 - and what does this all mean for American fixed income? This week, we're doing a deep dive to answer these questions and more. This episode is hosted by Andrew Lowry in London; he is joined by Jason Shoup, CIO and Co-Head of Global Fixed Income, and Anthony Woodside, Head of Multi-Sector Fixed Income & Investment Strategy, both at the Chicago office of L&G's Asset Management division. Despite headlines that have dominated the news stating concerns about the stock market and its ability to keep thriving under a new political administration, Mick Heyman, founder of Heyman Investment Counseling, doesn't see the warning signs of a terrible market. "Close your eyes, it's fear of heights, and just let the long-term trend continue on," Heyman said. He is not the only one who sees little trouble evident on the horizon, as Vuk Vuković, chief investment officer at Oraclum Capital, sees the economy being able to avoid a recession throughout 2025. Ravi Chintapalli from the Global Fixed Income team at Nuveen, says in The NAVigator that structural changes have made the junk bond market stronger, while reducing default risk; as a result, yields of 7 percent should be normal and comfortable in 2025. Plus Mac Sykes, portfolio manager at Gabelli talks financial stocks in the Market Call.
Ravi Chintapalli, Client Portfolio Manager on the Global Fixed Income team at Nuveen, says that the bond market has seen a structural change in the market for below-investment grade or junk bonds. Chintapalli says investors think of junk bonds as it was in times like 2007, when nearly one-third of the paper was teetering on the edge of default; today, however, only 10 percent of the below-investment grade paper carries those same low ratings, and default risk is much lower than in the past. As a result, investors can expect high-yield bonds to live up to their promise, with 7 percent income levels moving forward, and some extra risk cushion in the many cases where the bonds are selling below par.

When we think of impactful investments, public fixed income probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, it's driving far more capital into climate finance than we see in private equity, venture capital, and public equities combined. It's not just statistics – it's proof of the powerful impact fixed income can achieve. To learn more about the role of fixed income in sustainable impact investing, I'm speaking with Steve Liberatore, Head of ESG and Impact for Global Fixed Income, at Nuveen, one of the world's largest asset managers. A true pioneer, Steve has spent nearly two decades defining what sustainable bonds can achieve, crafting innovative green, blue, and nature bond frameworks that have become blueprints for the industry. Under his leadership, Nuveen's impact fixed income strategy is tackling some of today's most urgent challenges through a carefully structured approach that prioritizes positive social and environmental outcomes without compromising returns.Steve's strategy centers on “ring-fencing” proceeds to fund projects in four critical areas: affordable housing, renewable energy and climate, community and economic development, and natural resources. His approach drives large-scale impact by lowering the cost of capital for issuers, making it more affordable to finance sustainable projects that deliver long-term value. In this interview, Steve breaks down how Nuveen's global ESG strategy leverages public fixed income to drive measurable impact. Tune in for a fresh perspective on how responsible fixed income's unmatched scale is redefining impact investing and driving real, measurable change.–About the SRI 360° Podcast: The SRI 360° Podcast is focused exclusively on sustainable & responsible investing. Today marks the end of COP16, the UN's biodiversity-focused Conference of the Parties in Cali, Colombia. The UN's climate change conference, COP29, is slated to begin Nov. 11 in Baku, Azerbaijan. One common thread in these events is the challenge of addressing the big financing gaps for a range of sustainability issues — including climate, nature, and social equity. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we explore how the fixed income market is evolving to help fill in some of those sustainable finance gaps. We talk with Stephen Liberatore, Head of ESG and Impact for Global Fixed Income at Nuveen. Nuveen is a global asset manager with about $1.2 dollars trillion in total assets under management. “One of the things that is really important to our investors is that we look for issuers and issues that have environmental benefit or environmental stewardship,” Stephen says. “The issues that they're trying to identify and invest in are longer-term issues. They're not things that are going to be resolved overnight.” This piece was published by S&P Global Sustainable1, a part of S&P Global. With a penchant for math and a degree in biology from Cornell, Dave Rogal landed at BlackRock in 2006. With the housing bubble in full sway, he was part of a group that provided asset liability management advice to large institutions. Three years later, as the dust settled from the financial crisis, he joined the fixed income division, mentored by industry experts, and quickly exposed to the world of pricing dislocations that populated the system well into 2009.Now the head of Total Return and Inflation Portfolios, Dave shares some of the lessons learned on risk management through crisis periods. Reflecting on vol events like the Covid market shock, he asserts that simplification of exposures is critical as correlations can become unstable and unreliable. We spend most of our time learning about Dave's framework for thinking about inflation, a variable he suggests must be approached with humility. On a forward-looking basis, he sees disinflation in autos, a component that was hot, but is now starting to feel the impact of higher rates. We also discuss rents, and here Dave is generally sanguine as well. All in all, there is scope to return to month-on-month CPI readings of 0.2 and 0.3, welcome developments. On the risk front, he sees some potential that the Fed overtightens, based on comments that appear to focus more on the strength of labor market and activity data rather than embracing the progress on inflation. Lastly, we talk about the back-end of the yield curve and what Dave suggests are “daunting” supply dynamics set against the Fed's QT program and less capacity for banks to absorb new paper.I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Dave Rogal.

Mark Dowding is Chief Investment Officer at BlueBay Asset Management. Mark is a macro fixed income specialist who meets regularly in that context with global policymakers and has been actively involved in sovereign ESG engagement. He began his career in 1993 as a fixed income portfolio manager, after earning his economics degree at the University of Warwick. In today's episode, Mark speaks about his early career, how he came to be the Head of Global Fixed Income at Invesco at only 28 years of age, his move to Frankfurt to work with Deutsche Asset Management and why he chose to move with his family back to the UK, where he joined BlueBay Asset Management in 2010.We discuss his time at the University of Warwick and whether Warwick lives up to its title of the happiest place to live in Britain! Mark tells us about his love of football and his support of Chelsea F.C. and then we move onto the more serious stuff, with an overview of BlueBay and Mark's role as Chief Investment Officer. We hear how BlueBay incorporates ESG criteria into all of their investment decisions, and how they have incorporated ESG analysis into their investment teams rather than structuring it as a separate research function. Mark shares real life examples of their engagement activities with sovereign issuers, how they have shorted bonds of issuers who they perceive as performing poorly from an ESG perspective and how their investing strategies in sovereign bonds have impacted government policy and behavior. No fixed income ESG discussion would be complete without talking about greenwashing, and we discuss to what extent this practice exists at the sovereign level. We speak about BlueBay's Impact Aligned Bond Fund and finally, I quiz Mark with some rapid fire questions such as the single most important challenge in the fixed income space, and his advice on how to get into the sustainable fixed income space.I thoroughly enjoyed this insightful discussion with Mark and I hope you will too!About the SRI 360° Podcast: The SRI 360° Podcast is focused exclusively on sustainable & responsible investing. As we conclude this season, which we entitled a Bond's Eye View of the world, a lot of core arguments for adding fixed income at the start of the year still remain in place. So far, the Fed has continued to hike rates but they may, finally, be at the end of their tightening regime, and if we are at peak rates, that means now is the time for investors to lock in yields before they fall. Bonds could also provide portfolios with important diversification properties as we eye this next downturn. So, as investors take a closer look at their cash and bond holdings, we hope this season has helped shed light on the different opportunities within bonds, and how to think about duration, credit and income within portfolios. To wrap up our last episode, Dr. David Kelly is joined by Bob Michele, CIO and Head of our Global Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities Group at JP Morgan Asset Management, for a conversation on his outlook for the economy, the Fed, and ultimately, bond markets.
Welcome back to another edition of the InsuranceAUM.com podcast. Today's topic is a good one, global fixed income, huge allocation by most any insurance company. Host Colbert Cannon sits down with Nicholas Gartside, Chief Investment Officer and member of the Board of Management at Munich RE. Then, we hear about Nicholas' transition to manage a €250 billion insurance portfolio at Munich RE. He shares how he maneuvers a multi-asset portfolio anchored heavily in long-duration fixed income assets through turbulent markets. So far this season, we've talked about the bond market from a number of different angles and in this episode we look at fixed income as a global asset class. In our recently launched 2Q23 Guide to the Markets, we have a chart that shows that the majority of global debt is international, with the U.S. share accounting for less than 40% today. Moreover, divergent central banks and brighter growth prospects overseas paint a different fundamental landscape than that of U.S. fixed income assets. On today's episode, Dr. David Kelly is joined by Iain Stealey, International Chief Investment Officer within the Global Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities (GFICC) group, to dive into the outlook for global monetary policy and what this means for opportunities in international bonds. Access the Guide to the Markets here. For more resources visit the On the Minds of Investors webpage.

Stronger economic data has recently raised concerns that inflation is likely to remain stickier than expected. In the latest episode of Exchanges at Goldman Sachs, Rick Rieder, chief investment officer of Global Fixed Income at BlackRock, and Praveen Korapaty, chief interest rates strategist at Goldman Sachs Research, say interest rates have somewhat further to climb and are likely to stay at higher levels for longer. Rieder and Korapaty also share their views on the global outlook for bonds across Europe and Japan, as well as the implications for investors. This episode is based on Goldman Sachs' most recent Top of Mind report, (Japanese) Bonds, Bonds, Bonds.
As we wrap up on the past year, many would agree that the predominant market trend that impacted investors would have to be inflation. In 2022, inflation levels rose to the highest we have seen in four decades. How did we get here? Looking ahead to 2023, we evaluate how today's inflation story could play out. When might we expect this principle of gravity to come to fruition? Or is this a new normal that the investment world needs to acclimate to? On this episode of Disruptive Forces, host Anu Rajakumar is joined by Olumide Owolabi, Portfolio Manager for Global Fixed Income, and Raheel Siddiqui, Senior Investment Strategist for Global Equities where they break down the dynamics of today's inflationary environment and opine on how investors could navigate the market.
