Leslie is joined by Jen Schmidt of Balancing Beauty and Bedlam. They talk about hospitable homeschooling, which in a time where gathering in groups is so limited, I think you will be encouraged and challenged as you look at how God wants to use you and your family to bless others and show them God's great love through the ministry of hospitality.  Transcript Leslie (00:03): Hey there and welcome to the Homeschooling Family Podcast by Teach Them Diligently. Here we discuss just about everything that comes into play. When you're a Christian homeschooling family, I'm Leslie Nunnery, and on today's podcast, I'm joined by Jen Schmidt of Balancing Beauty and Bedlam together. We're going to discuss hospitable homeschooling, which in a time when getting together in big groups is so limited, I think you're going to be encouraged and challenged as you look at how God wants to use you and your family to bless others and show them. God's great love for them through the ministry of hospitality. Jen shares specific ways her family has done this as we chat about a subject that you're going to see is pretty near and dear to both of our hearts. This was originally recorded as part of a series we did in teach them diligently 365 about living boldly. I invite you to check out that whole series as a TTD365 member for today, though. Let's dive right in and talk about hospitable homeschooling together. Leslie (01:24): We are back this week to talk once again about how living boldly looks in our daily lives and in our families. And I want to tell you about... Actually, I want to kick it off by telling you about a book that I read. It's called "just open the door". It's by Jen Schmidt. And it just so beautifully encapsulated what my heart has been in talking about hospitable homeschooling and hospitable living that I immediately reached out to Jen and begged her to come on and do this video with me, because I think that you can benefit so much by hearing her heart in this and her story. So, Jen, I want to welcome you to Teach Them Diligently. And just, can you tell us a little bit about yourself, maybe a little bit behind the heart of why you wrote this beautiful book on hospitality? Jen (02:15): Thank you, Leslie. It's such an honor to be here and oh, that's such a loaded question because when I think of the book "Just Open the Door", it really is a legacy of hospitality and lifestyle that we've lived. And I call myself an accidental author because I've been a homeschool mom for 20 years. I can barely even believe I'm saying that our eldest son is 24 and we homeschooled him all the way through. And so in the middle of the, you know, the day to day life, I started realizing, Lord, how can we best in the midst of raising five children and homeschooling and wanting to live boldly for the gospel? I just prayed and asked him, how can you make my time filled with as much kingdom purpose as possible? And he began revealing over and over and over how opening my door and inviting others to do life together, whether that's in a mentorship role, whether that's in an evangelistic role or whether it's just, you know, encouraging each other on that mission of motherhood. Jen (03:25): Um, and so when I was approached about writing this book, initially I had said, no, I just didn't think I had it in me. And then as the Lord just prompted my heart to say, Jen, your parents model this open door living for you. And you have the opportunity to look back on decades from when I was, you know, small young child. And they opened the door to me through adoption, which is the greatest act of hospitality, um, and how their ministry of open door living impacted mine. And so just open the doors a little different than your typical hospitality book. In fact, the, um, tagline is “how one invitation can change a generation”. And when we were talking about the title, I even said, I don't want hospitality in the word at all in the title, because as women,

Remember that goal I set in 2018 to open our home every single week? Well, it was hard and scary at first, but the more we did it, the more it's become second nature to use! Last week alone, we opened up our home all week to host three college girls who are volunteering at Pine Cove Camp in the City, we hosted the Girls' Bible Study for the teen girls at church (I think maybe 20 girls came?), we had multiple teens over, we had two couples over for dinner, and we had a family over for dinner. And I loved it! In this week's episode, Jesse and I open the show by talking more about the lessons we've learned on hospitality and how it has changed our lives to re-define what true hospitality is. (Want to hear more encouragement for practicing hospitality, even if it scares you? Be sure to check out the episode devoted to this topic with Jen Schmidt, author of Just Open the Door. We also dive into the topic of Habit Trackers and how both of us are using them this summer -- me for a specific goal and Jesse to help the kids stay on track and be more productive. I share how I've been making huge progress toward a goal with just a simple change in my perspective and by putting some accountability in place. And Jesse shares how this printable habit lists he put together for the kids have made a big difference in encouraging the kids to work hard, play hard, and spend less time on electronics!   Instead of an interview, Jesse and I answer a follower's questions on what it's really like to work together as a married couple. We discuss decision making, how we handle conflict and disagreement, who decides how the money is spent, how we make decisions on what risks to take, and how we balance being a spender and a saver who are also married and in business together. Whether you are a couple who works together or you are just curious to hear more of the behind-the-scenes of our business operations or you just want to know how we've stayed friends and business partners who are also married, you won't want to miss this episode! In This Episode: [00:51] - So many people have been in and out of our house lately that we joke that we're past the "Just Open the Door" stage and have moved onto "Just Leave the Door Open" stage! [05:46] - In addition to sharing important lessons we've learned from our commitment to open up our home every week, we also chat about how we encourage the kids to practice hospitality when inviting their friends over. [07:01] - Have you ever used a habit tracker? I just started using one to better prioritize my time and it’s working! (so far…) You can check it out here, I snagged it from Abby Lawson. [13:30] - Jesse has been using a habit tracker with the kids to keep them busy and engaged! They are working toward a big “end of summer” surprise!  [16:26] - Over the next few weeks, Jesse and I will be tackling some of the most-asked questions and topics you all have submitted as podcast episode suggestions. [17:06] - This week, we're having a very honest conversation about what it's like to be married and business partners -- and how we make it work all while staying best friends. [19:32] - How do we make big business decisions -- does one person have more say than another? We share more on our roles and how they play out. [24:09] - What if we don't agree? We chat about what we do when we don't agree and agreeing often involves waiting or compromising. [28:12] - One of us is a spender and the other is a saver (can you guess who is who?) How does this work in our business? Okay, so it's hard for me to pick favorite episodes of my podcast... because that kind of feels like picking a favorite child. BUT, I have to say that this week's episode is probably going to be one of my very favorites. Because the message of this episode is one that has personally transformed my life in such a big way. You see, I used to be so scared to invite people into my home. Hospitality felt like something I just wasn’t good at. In fact, I told myself for a long time that I’m an introverted person who is a homebody and who doesn’t host things or initiate. And by telling myself this, I had convinced myself that hosting and initiating weren’t my gifts or my personality. It was safer to wait to let other people do the inviting. It was safer to convince myself I wasn’t the type to step out, step up, initiate, or lead. But all that changed when I read Just Open the Door by Jen Schmidt. It’s a book written specifically for people like me who feel so awkward about the whole hospitality thing. Jen sent me a pre-release copy of her book in December of 2017. I remember getting that copy and planning to just quickly read it while we were driving to Kansas to visit family for Christmas. She had asked me to endorse it and I had said yes just because Jen is a longtime friend and I wanted to support her. But as I read the book, I felt like I was being called to do much more than just write an endorsement for the book — I felt stirred to step way outside my comfort zone and commit to opening up our home every single week in 2018. I had no idea how that was going to transform my life! Listen to today's podcast to hear the whole story...   In This Episode: [02:04] - Why we let our daughter get a phone when she was 12... and why we might not let our other kids get one until they are older. [04:53] - I share about my very favorite mascara! [08:18] - I talk about my book pick for this week, and share my experience with it and why it was so powerful for me (as well as a few critiques of it -- because you know I can't help but be honest!). [09:42] - Hospitality used to feel like something that I just wasn’t good at. That changed when I read Just Open the Door by today’s guest, Jen Schmidt! [12:11] - What motivated Jen to write a book on the topic of opening one’s door? [16:14] - Jen gives some ideas and suggestions for people who feel like they can’t afford to host, their house isn’t big enough or clean enough, or they don’t cook well enough. [21:01] - Jen shares her words of wisdom for a woman who wants to open her door but doesn’t even know where to start. [24:47] - This time, I’m going to change things up a bit and close the show by telling you about the commitment I made for 2018 to open our door every single week and give you a challenge, if you're brave enough to accept it (and I hope you are!) You just go to their site, pick your phone plan and either switch your current phone over or get a new phone, and they get it all set up for you. My favorite part about their service (in addition to their great prices!) is that they offer plan flexibility with the ability to change plans or phones at any time for free. You’re not locked into an expensive contract that has activation and termination fees. Coffee Talk Topic: Open Door Living Open Door Living means to live in a posture of Hospitality as an act of service, to glorify God everywhere you are. Host Brandee Nielsen says: “In Romans 12:13 Paul teaches us to “always be eager to practice hospitality. The definition of the word hospitality means the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. I bet the first thing that comes to mind is about hosting guests in your home. This is one way to do it, but it’s not the only way. Paul was talking about hospitality as exemplified in Christ.” Featured Guest: Jen Schmidt Jen Schmidt is a popular speaker, worship leader and founder of the annual Becoming Conference. Balancing Beauty and Bedlam is a blog Jen created to encourage and challenge women to embrace both the beauty and bedlam of their everyday lives. In her latest book, Just Open the Door, Jen tackles hospitality as an act of Worship. Jen says “worship is any act that brings pleasure to God. It’s any act aimed at His glory. Hospitality, in the true sense of service, is an act of worship and surrender. It’s an opportunity we have for Christian discipleship and evangelism. I look at Jesus as the hospitality guru. He is the Master of all things welcome. Jesus walked a road of welcome and invited people wherever He was at.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Connect with Jen at www.beautyandbedlam.com Get a copy of Jen’s book, Just Open The Door, at on Amazon! https://www.amazon.com/Just-Open-Door-Invitation-Generation/dp/1433643073 Subscribe to the Christian Coffee Talk Podcast on iTunes Podcast, Google Play Podcast, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and Stitcher. For many of us, inviting people into our lives and homes feels more like inviting judgment on our entertaining skills and stress on our already maxed-out schedules. But what if you knew that opening your front door had the power to radically change the world? To make an impact and leave a legacy with everyday invitations? Jen Schmidt has set out to reframe how we think about hospitality and to equip us to walk a road of welcome in our daily lives. Jen knows that every time we choose open-door living—whether in our homes or by taking hospitality on the road just like Jesus—those we invite in get to experience the lived-out Gospel, our kids grow up in a life-lab of generosity, and we trade insecurity for connection. Do you enjoy being hospitable or is it more effort than it’s worth?  Do you struggle with insecurity over an undecorated house or lack of confidence in your cooking skills? You are not alone, sister! But it’s important to move past those roadblocks #sothat you can experience and share the blessing of being hospitable.  Let’s Just Open the Door together, women! { Read the Companion Blog Post Here } For the last decade, Jen Schmidt has been encouraging, challenging, and cheering on women to embrace both the beauty and bedlam of their everyday lives on her popular lifestyle blog, Balancing Beauty and Bedlam. Just Open the Door , by Jen Schmidt For many of us, inviting people into our lives and homes feels more like inviting judgment on our entertaining skills and stress on our already maxed-out schedules. But what if you knew that opening your front door had the power to radically change the world? To make an impact and leave a legacy with everyday invitations? Jen Schmidt has set out to reframe how we think about hospitality and to equip us to walk a road of welcome in our daily lives. Jen knows that every time we choose open-door living—whether in our homes or by taking hospitality on the road just like Jesus—those we invite in get to experience the lived-out Gospel, our kids grow up in a life-lab of generosity, and we trade insecurity for connection. a Rafflecopter giveaway --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heidistjohn/support

How To Heat The Heart Of A Holy Hottie 1 Peter 3:7 (NIV) “Husbands, in the same way BE CONSIDERATE as you LIVE WITH your wives, and TREAT THEM WITH RESPECT as the weaker partner, and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.” According to 1 Peter 3:7, three things will warm the heart of a Godly woman toward her man. 1. Understand my wife! Hard Because of the way we’re made so different… Starts - “BE CONSIDERATE” Difficulty in Communication is Hard Wired (Illus. Communication 3) Woman 25,000 words – Man 10,000 words… Wife 45 Min to 1 Hour a day – Husband 15-20 Min. Once, Twice Week My Wife: Deep Yearning to Know – I want to Know Her – NOT JUST FIX HER… Understanding is the FIX!!! Definition: Thoughtful of the needs and feelings of another. Be in tune with her feelings. We need to be able to discern our wives feelings and respond to them accordingly. Don't ignore, belittle, or get angry at your wife's feelings. Know her desires. - Concerning herself. - Concerning your family Understand her moods. Some days she'll be blue a need an extra dose of tenderness. Some days she'll be fed up with the kids and need you to give her some relief. Some days she'll feel lonely, and need a little extra time. Some days she'll feel unlovely, and may need a new dress or a hairdo to make her feel attractive. There's No System. Sensitivity grows out of communication. More than just talking. It is LOOKING, LISTENING, and LEARNING. Many wives Say, Husbands are BLIND and DEAF Understanding their needs and desires. So Busy trying to fix it – Never Understand Her – Understanding is the REAL FIX! Requires Attention - Every part of the human body communicates: The eyes - show anger, disinterest, Happiness. The body - It shows when it's tired, depressed, bored. The tone of voice often reveals the truth behind our words. Just - Open our EYES and EARS - Wives are saying (to us and to others), we would learn how to RESPOND TO THEIR EMOTIONS and MEET THEIR NEEDS. Ask Yourself Does she need COMFORT? Does she need ENCOURAGEMENT? Does she need HELP? Does she need LEFT ALONE? 2. Spend time with my wife! “LIVE WITH” Most Modern Marriages – Suffer from a Simple lack of Togetherness…! Careers have Destroyed Relationships… Outside Interests have destroyed Relationships – No Automatic Pilot… Lack of time together - Opens up room for a deep soul loneliness – Vulnerable! Definition: Share my life … do things together… be companions. (Illus.) Sharing Life is Not – Pack Mule, Mouse, Lion, Worker Bee “What Women Want”… (Illus. Dishes with me 8) 3. Honor my wife! Value of a Wife: Proverbs 31:10 An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. Prov 12:4 An excellent wife is the crown of her husband Prov 18:22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord. Guy who didn’t do understand this (Illus. Undertaker 9) “TREAT THEM WITH RESPECT” Guy Really tried to Change (Illus. Come Home Drunk 7) Definition: Show that I put her needs and desires ahead of my own by my words, attitudes, and actions. (Illus.) GOLD Practical ways to assign honor: 1) Tell her you love her and appreciate her…When we got Married… 2) Tell others that you love her and appreciate her (especially in her presence) 3) Treat her “Heir of the Gracious Gift of Life… Before God” --- CROSS Frustration builds up - Shown that she is Special “What’s Wrong?” -- “Why Frustrated?” “TREAT THEM WITH RESPECT – AS THE WEAKER PARTNER” Explain: “Weaker – Caution: HANDLE WITH CARE” HOW? --- 3 Ways… Pamper Her. By doing so, you let her know that you want her to dress and smell like a
