Key Takeaways: Why Lisa left her life as a Harvard trained PhD in Neuroscience to become a fiction writer, with no prior writing experience Why her grandmother having alzheimer's triggered her desire to write How & why she became an "empathy warrior" for people with neurological disorders How acting classes helped her become a better writer We dig into her creative process – how she crafts her books Why all of her books cover a neurological disorder and how they connect to life themes How she kept up her motivation when her future was uncertain.  Her book was originally rejected by 100 agents yet she was determined to get her book out in the world and it paid off. How her self-published book eventually secured her an agent and ended up on the New York Times Best-sellers list for 59 weeks! How she trusted that fiction was the way to tell her stories to create empathy with the reader. Why she loves the concept of duality and how our decisions create the reality we are living today vs the path not taken. How her book "Still Alice" became a major motion picture starring Julianne Moore and Alec Baldwin.   We go into how it felt to be at the Oscar's and seeing her work on the big screen. Why her latest book, "Every Note Played" deals with ALS. Lisa shares the questions we need to ask ourselves to discover our own life purpose Why you should never make decisions out of fear The books she used to learn the craft of writing 3 key tips for all women out there who want to pursue their dreams....and so much more... She supports women to not be afraid of selling and teaches them how to achieve the financial success they envision for themselves. We discuss her interesting journey into the world of sales without speaking a word of English and what you need to know in order to enjoy the sales process as a female entrepreneur, and more. The show notes are at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/045   WE DISCUSS: How she got into sales selling high end knives when she didn't speak English Why she considers Sales to be her second language instead of English How necessity to help her single mother gave her the courage and resilience to earn an income and master the art of sales The fundamental sales techniques she learned selling knives, including not to take “no” personally and why you need to sell to “qualified buyers”. How seeing someone else achieve success shows you what is possible for yourself. Julia's definition of sales “How can I be a conduit for someone to help them elevate their life in anyway you can.” Selling is about helping the people who gravitates towards you and listening well to helping them along the way.  It isn't about convincing someone. How you need to have a serving heart and to figure out if there is the right fit. Your mind will give you what you want.  If you want to focus on all of the negatives your mind will give you that.  If you want something to work, it will come to you.  Look at obstacles as  way to course correct. Follow-up is key – 50% of the sales are done in the follow-up. Women don't charge enough because of shame and guilt of asking for more money.  Feeling like I'm “not enough” may prevent you to charge for your value. The book is about figuring out who you are again. Planning your time and being organized is essential. Be the architect of your life. Tamsen decluttered her apartment.  She didn't leave her home – so she re-did the bedroom, kitchen, and closets.  Repainted furniture.  She got rid of anything that didn't serve her or reminded her of him. She made the space feel like her instead. She ended up in $100,000 worth of debt and we discuss how she got out. How to stop looking for “the one more thing”.  Looking for closure.  One more sentence.  One more question. The importance of talking with friends and finding support through a therapist and other resources. She's been a business anchor for major networks for the last 15 years, delivering live hourly reports from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange for Bloomberg, CNN, ABC, CBS, and NY1 News. Joya is currently using her 20 years in television to build programming for her global women's initiative. LadyDrinks is a networking platform cultivating the ultimate South Asian female leader. We discuss Joya's troubled childhood witnessing the domestic abuse of her mother and how she was determined from a young age to create a better life for herself. A life she created and continues to evolve to empower other women! The show notes are at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/041   WE DISCUSS: How she was raised in a home of domestic violence. She knew she would have a better life as soon as she could leave. How she knew she wanted to be a TV anchor at a young age. At 18 she left for college, and her parents hadn't saved for school.  So she put herself through school and is very thankful to the strong men and women around her that helped her along the way. We talk about her Ted Talk “Re-thinking Failure” We discuss her latest venture – LadyDrinks  When Joya launched LadyDrinks — 300 SouthEast Asian women showed up because they too were looking for support. Today we talk about specific strategies to position yourself in a noisy market to best lead and serve in your unique way, while making a profit. The show notes are at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/038  Key Takeaways: Launched the first internet marketing podcast and launched a coaching business for budding entrepreneurs. He is passionate about helping his clients get recognized for their expertise and while getting paid to do what you love. The 3 M's: 1.Market - target audience — if you aren't gotten traction maybe you are being too general 2.Messaging - you need to speak to where the client is now.  Speak to their pain.  Don't get into the solution.  Speak to top of mind stuff based on where they are at.Medium - show up where they are already at.  How do you identify and focus on your “Unique Genius”.  Jason's definition is know your strengths and weaknesses.  Knowing the circumstances that leads you to being your best.   3 Sources: to help you define it: 10-15 statements to where you are at your best.  Ex, I create my greatest value when…..  I am my most creative when…. Ask trusted advisors, friends and ask what are your strengths are. Take a the Strengths Finder by Sally Hogshead or her Strengths test for leadership Remember are resources are time, money, connections.  Evaluate what you have the most of when you are starting.  Look at where you are now and track all of the stuff you do over a couple of weeks.  What percentage of my time do I spend on my unique genius per week.  Now put it through the lens of my unique genius. Be consistent for 60-90 days.  Pick 1-2 and really double down on there. A lead magnet should talk about pain points.  Don't discuss solutions that people aren't aware of for the lead magnet.  Create the kind of thing someone else might charge money for and post on social and your website to have people sign up. Jason's 3 Best Tips: Know who you want to serve first and foremost.  Get to selling as quickly as possible.   You need to be able to see what your offer is.  Get one client and prove to yourself someone will pay for what you are offering. Really lean into being yourself.  Play around with your voice.  There is so much noise on the internet — the only way to find your voice is to turn it up to 11.  There is something about your voice and your vulnerability. Experiment to find your voice. Resources: Louder than Words - Todd Henry Jasonvanorden.com — sign up for my newsletter. "What do Madonna, Martha Stewart, John Lennon, Ellen DeGeneres, Ben Franklin, Ronald Reagan, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Edison, and Johnny Cash have in common? Each is (or was) a list maker. These successful people, along with CEOs and successful entrepreneurs, all use lists to keep track of their ideas, thoughts, and tasks." Paula Rizzo, the author of Listful Living is going to share her best tips on how to use lists to live a happier, less stressed life. The show notes are at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/037  As a former senior health producer for Fox News Channel for more than a decade Paula produced segments with a range of top experts, including JJ Virgin, Jillian Michaels, and Deepak Chopra. A media veteran for nearly 20 years, she also worked in local news in New York City as a producer for WCBS, WPIX and WLNY. Key Takeaways: Create your roadmap the night before to set your intention for the next day.  Write down how you want your day to go to keep you focused on priorities. Have one notebook and use it as a your system - but know not every system will work for everyone, so you'll need to figure out what works best for you. Make your lists very specific. For example, don't say do emails, write down who you need to email and when you are going to do it. Listful Living helps you figure out your productivity style. If you are struggling to get things done, time yourself to see how long a task takes you. Do a before lunch and after lunch list.  Morning can be your writing time and in the afternoon set up meetings with others. Separate lists.  Work tasks.  Home tasks on different lists.   Time yourself for 10 minutes and see how far you can get in that minutes. Priorities vs Tasks. Lists help us be less stressed. Stress impacts your mind and soul and 70-90% of all medical visits are related to stress. Schedule lunch every day on your list.  Fridays are left open for creativity. Listful thinking What do Madonna, Martha Stewart, John Lennon, Ellen DeGeneres, Ben Franklin, Ronald Reagan, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Edison, and Johnny Cash have in common? Each is (or was) a list maker. These successful people, along with CEOs and successful entrepreneurs, all use lists to keep track of their ideas, thoughts, and tasks. Finding enough hours in the day to get everything accomplished and allow for some downtime can be a struggle. It's no wonder so many of us are stressed, overextended, and exhausted. More than half of all American employees feel overwhelmed, according to a study by the nonprofit Family and Work Institute. For the 54 percent of us who feel like we're chasing our own tails, Listful Thinking is here to prove that it doesn't have to be that way. Listful Thinking is the book that will give readers their lives back with indispensible tips on saving time, getting organized, improving productivity, saving money, and reducing stress. Listful Living is the perfect book for list makers and life planners. Learn to: Tap into your own productivity style to get more done Curate your list making to best serve the lifestyle you want to lead Prioritize what's truly important and be mindful of where you spend your precious energy Create a roadmap to be less stressed Reduce stress She's also co-creator of Lights Camera Expert  - an online course geared towards helping entrepreneurs, authors and experts get media attention. She's a contributor to MindBodyGreen.com, Entrepreneur.com and Thrive Global. A veteran speaker she's presented at MA Conference for Women, HOW Design Live, New York Women in Communications, National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), and many others. Key Takeaways If you are going to pitch someone you need to know what kind of show they work on so you know who and what to pitch.  Lists help you become focused Many successful people like Madonna, Johnny Cash, Ellen DeGenerous all use lists.  You shouldn't have to keep this in your mind.   Listful Thinking is all about how you can to do it better.  How to make better lists.  Listful Living is a journal - self-discovery (where are you right now).  Part 2 - Dream Big - what would your life look like.  Part 3 - put self-care onto your calendar - put things into action. Mindfulness, Meditation, and other ways to reduce stress. A virtual trip - you need time to decompress. 3 best tips Be clear about what you put on your list- you'll be 33% more likely to achieve it.  Be specific. Don't overwhelm yourself with big picture stuff Don't be afraid to outsource to get things off of your list.  Let go of the things you think you “should be doing” Give yourself time on your calendar for you.  Create an “isolation bubble”.   listproducer.com IG - listproducer Be of service.  Look to see who that producer's audience is - watch the show, read the magazine, watch the ads so you know who the audience is.  When you pitch don't say I won awards - talk about how I can serve your audience.   Look up the stuff the producer has done before and make a connection to the producer when you pitch.  Treat them like a person. Create the relationship before the book is out.  Get the practice.   Being able to think visually for TV is key: Be able to be found by consistently sharing content.  Do video first - then you can take the audio and transcribe it.  Share opinions and your views around your expertise. Get yourself in the mindset of the media. To pitch television - you need to send a clip of you on video.  They need to see what you look and sound like on camera. A producer will always do a pre-interview with you to avoid someone flat-line on camera. What colors should people wear? Always wear bold colors.  Jewel tones are great.  Solids.  See what the set looks like and don't wear the same color as the set - you want to pop. Always bring a back-up wardrobe with you. Avoid patters because they are not good on camera.  Also, avoid white and black as it doesn't look good on camera. Wear stuff you've worn before - don't test an outfit on TV. Same goes for jewelry. If you wear a dress - they will need to strap onto your bra or you can wear pants. Practice what you are going to say before you go on camera. Think in headlines and say those when on air.  Don't talk too much. Watch the show and the anchor before going on.  Know that they may not be friendly or talk to you - so don't take it personally and don't let the anchor's energy throw you off. Keep your energy up and “perform”.  You have to tell the story like a broadway actor and do it again and again like a pro. Ground yourself.  Calm yourself down and take deep breaths. The lights are very bright and hot but the studios are really cold. Create videos for your business development.  Have people know you before they hire you.  It is more intimate.  Video is one step up from a podcast because you can see and hear the person. Always think “how can I be of service?”  It is always about the audience.  How can you help someone and what is the tip you can leave them with today? Social media is important - be consistent and keep it authentic.  It depends on the outlet how much they'll care how big your following is. Someone might not like your pitch but they may like you and will collaborate with you.You have to follow up if you don't hear back.  Reply back to the same email and re-pitch.  “Hey I know you are really busy and wanted to put this back on the top of your list and wanted to talk about this as I think it was helpful to your audience.”  You can call the producer's number and leave a message and then follow-up with an email. Paula's 3 Best Tips for List-Making: Be clear about what you put on your list- you'll be 33% more likely to achieve it.  Be specific. Don't overwhelm yourself with big picture stuff. Don't be afraid to outsource to get things off of your list.  Let go of the things you think you “should be doing” Give yourself time on your calendar for you.  Create an “isolation bubble”.   Resources http://listproducer.com Michele's Free List of 52 Self-Care Tips Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, or on your favorite podcast player -- and be sure to follow us Instagram! THIS IS VERY TIME ORIENTED: PLEASE TAKE ACTION ALONG WITH US!  Hormones Are Under Attack, Dr. Berkson’s Interview with Dr. Daved Rosensweet.  Daved Rosensweet MD has been specializing in bioidentical hormone therapies for decades. Dr. Rosensweet has developed his own training program (www.menopausemethod.com), patented hormone bases, and now this.   Dr. Rosensweet just came back from Washington D.C, where he testified in front of the National  Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) to try to protect our rights and abilities to have access to safe and individualized hormones. Meaning: compounded bioidentical hormone replacement therapies (BHRT). The battle is on for who gets the money from women getting hormones. Pharmaceutical manufacturers continually try to be the main influencer of the FDA; trying to keep women on patentable (non- individualized) hormones, versus compounded bioidentical hormones by compounding pharmacies in response to doctor’s individualize scripts. Our monumental efforts are called for right now! NASEM, has been tasked and funded by the FDA to organize a Committee on the Clinical Utility of Treating Patients with Compounded “Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy.” To date there have been three meetings of testimonies of "stakeholders and experts" to the Committee. Recently surveys have been sent out to the public and practitioners for their opinions (see link to survey below).   Between the three meetings the majority of time was given to testimonies “negative” to bioidentical hormones. In contrast, about 1 hour and 35 minutes were on the “pro” side, supporting bioidentical hormones.    As far as can be discerned from the biographies of the 12 Committee members of MDs and PhDs, none have treated women or men with Bioidentical Hormones. Paula Rizzo: How to Get Media Attention

Have you ever wondered how to get booked to be an expert guest on TV but don't know what steps to take? Would you like to learn how to use video to expand your reach? On the show is Emmy award winning TV News Producer and Media Strategist, Paula Rizzo who gives us her best tips to get media attention for your book, product, service, or business -- both for TV and in print. She also shares how to use video to maximize your reach. The show notes are at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/036  As a former senior health producer for Fox News Channel for more than a decade Paula produced segments with a range of top experts, including JJ Virgin, Jillian Michaels, and Deepak Chopra. A media veteran for nearly 20 years, she also worked in local news in New York City as a producer for WCBS, WPIX and WLNY. She's also co-creator of Lights Camera Expert  - an online course geared towards helping entrepreneurs, authors and experts get media attention. She also teaches Become A Video Star - a virtual workshop that empowers experts to create their own compelling videos. Paula has been featured in major media outlets like FoxNews.com, Business Insider and The Daily News. Be of service. Paula's 3 Best Tips for Media Attention: Be of service. You need to think about 3 things: A. What's your hook?  B. Why is it relevant now? C. How is this different from everything else out there? What is the takeaway that will change the person's life? Don't wait to get media, get started right away.   Today we are talking about how to embrace your femininity as a way of reclaiming your power and manifesting from feminine energy instead of the masculine which is what is fueling business and life. The show notes are at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/035  Key Takeaways In Corporate America there is a masculine paradigm that has been leading the way for generations. Women want to change the system, have equal pay, and the same job opportunities; yet many women are still operating in a way that doesn't support younger women coming up or even their peers. This is obviously a generalization, but so many women tell me stories that leave me feeling frustrated. Even though we've come so far - we have so much farther to go. I thought that the world of entrepreneurship would be different. Women using their feminine energy to create and build success on their own terms. Many women are doing this, but I was surprised that the popular and "cool" language used to describe success that women have adopted as their own is all based on the masculine. "Crushing it", "hustle", "push", "killing it", and "slay" are the words women are using to describe how to create success. Instead, I am inviting women to think about bringing in the feminine as a balance to this energy. You can have hustle but you can also have "flow". You can push when you need to, but also "allow". You can be "killing it and crushing it and slay" or you can also balance that by "doing what you love, taking inspired action, and trusting." Mother Earth serves as a reminder and example of the feminine. She gives life and supports life. Everything has its time and process. Women intuitively understand that bringing in "trust and flow" allows things to unfold in their time. Michele's 3 Best Tips to Embrace the Feminine: Think about your work environment and how you can support other women. If you are an entrepreneur, what energy do you need more of right now? If you have been operating out of the masculine, bring in feminine energy to balance and not burn yourself out. Remember that feminine energy is powerful. I LOVED this conversation today with my guest today, Sarah Whitten, who is a vocal coach aka the "vocal yogi". Our voice is our connection to our soul. Sarah connects singers to their body, voice, and breath so they can access their "one true voice" and move away from believing they are "broken". We discuss how you can access your true voice even if you aren't a singer. How to listen to your body so you are in alignment. Sarah also answers the question "Can anyone sing?" and so much more. The show notes are at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/032. Key Takeaways Whether you are a singer or not - You need to learn how your body feels.  Have curiosity about your body and emotions. Pay attention to how what you do feels in your body. When you sit and get up, pay attention. After you work out evaluate how you feel. Be a student of your body. Our voice is how we communicate who we are in life.  As layers of critical voices arise, we don't express ourselves fully.   Deeply profound and healing by understanding the intersection of your voice, body, and spirit. Sarah's 3 Best Tips to Own Your True Voice: Own your genius work.  Own what you are really good at. The show notes are at thegoodlifecoach.com/030 Key Takeaways: IT ALL STARTS WITH THE MESSAGE.  Why are you doing what you do?  The answer can't be because you like it. The fact is that there are thousands of people that do what you do.  The key is to identify not just what makes you different but to create copy that resonates with your audience.  People try to make nice sounding copy that makes them sound smart - BUT the audience only cares how it helps them. People use the words everyone else uses.  You need to use the words that are unique to your customers. Your website shouldn't be a mirror in which you see yourself it should be a mirror of people seeing themselves.  When you ask: What do I do?, What do I offer?, What are my services? - these aren't your brand.  This is your job. Questions to ask yourself: Write a scene from your life and your work because it felt so good to help the person.  Make it as descriptive as possible.  Take yourself out of the "marketing mind."  Forget “what you do for a minute”  Read it out loud to someone who loves you.  Just mirror back what they heard about it.   What you think what you offer is something different than what you offer - this is the promise of what you do. Write down ways you can serve: “What if I could?”  or “What if we could?”  What if I could help someone look in the mirror and love what they see.  These are the ways you want to serve. The idea funnel.  Write down what the assumptions are that your clients/customers have about your business/service/product.  Then look at the risks of them not using you.  Go deep Conflict.  Where is the rub?  This is what I'm struggling with. Discovery - what do I do about what you just brought up? Application - how do I say it in plain english? Your Bio should be 3rd person and also simple straight forward about what you do. Then, first person description of your story.  Go on LinkedIn - shouldn't be a cold bio.  Do Linkedin in first person.  - Say for the last twenty years i did this and this is wha I enjoyed about it. TedX - in Kansas City - a NYTimes journalist dropped out and a person on FB reached out and said they had an opening and the person put her in touch with the organizer.   Ted is pure content.  She talked about how follow your passion is not a good fit for anyone. How to craft a talk: — Ask yourself: What do you believe about the world that you can challenge their thinking for their own good and how can you shift my thinking on this topic so I feel better about myself.  It's not just a good story - it is story-telling+crafting a good idea. If you have dreams you want to realize, but your limiting beliefs or a critical voice is holding you back, then you'll want to tune in. My guest today is Suzanne Kingsbury the Founder of The Gateless Methodology --which is a combination of brain science, radical nurturing, and embracing your weaknesses. Suzanne takes us through the three steps to implement her methodology. Her work is moving away from a culture of criticism to reconnect to your creativity, power, and your truth. Suzanne is a best-selling author. The agent who sold Memoirs of a Geisha and Cold Mountain sold her book to Scribner for one of the biggest deals of the year for a first novelist, foreign rights were coming, and film options were on the way.  Her writing dreams had suddenly come alive. And in the years ahead, she realized her bigger calling was to help new writers experience the sweetness of publishing success. You don't need to be a writer to learn how to tap into your power and creativity. This work is for anyone as it teaches you how to improve your relationships with yourself, your partner and even become a more present parent.  All of the show notes can be found at thegoodlifecoach.com/028.   Who is the Gateless methodology for?  Everyone. The work translates to all areas of people's lives. The Gateless Process: Radical nurturing.  The ability to allow yourself to be nurtured.  Hot baths, massage, and writing a list of what is beautiful about you every night.  When you do this your inner voice will appear.  Pay attention and don't let it take over.  This is what makes you strong. Look at what you see as broken about you is actually your power.  Don't fight what we see as broken and see it as our superpower.  This is very counter-culture which is why it is so profound. Understand that you have so many resources innately inside of you that we often forget to count.  For example, people think money is the most important thing but she says resources are the most important thing.  What do you need?  This is what gives you agency to begin. Look for your resources: Time, People, Networking Events She looks at the part of the mind that triggers fight or flight.  When you look at what is happening that makes you feel joyful - do more than that.  What are the activities that are activating the fight or flight.   Gateless is around finding what works and surrounding yourself with more good. What does my husband do well - tell him. What does my child do well?  How can I first tell my kid what I love about her.  When the critical voice gets strong it means you are on the right path. If there is a block - write into the block.  Let the voice of anxiety speak on the paper.  Write in the 2nd person.  It wants to be heard.  Then ask it - do you think this is actually true?  Listen - do you think there are really these issues?  Should we look? Let's see if that is true and then the anxiety can be seen and heard.   Buy a journal - write your story.  Look for the divine in there.  There is something that is greater than the human condition.  Ask the questions and the highest self will answer the questions. If you want to be a writer.  Brenda Ueland - If you want to ?” Run with the Wolves - author of that book. Channeled writing - and then let whatever wants to come out on the page.  talk about your life and direction.  Self-assessment.  Am I embodying everything I want to put out in the world in a real way? Suzanne's 3 Best Tips: Be the best friend of the self - Parent the self.  Really find the abundance of the strength of who you are. Don't beat yourself up over time.  As long as you have the intention.  Relax around the time - it will happen at the right time. Really see if there is an availability for writing in your life.  A tiny notepad that you can write about what you love about you, your husband, and let your critic speak. Everything is possible with the approach of non-judgment.  You are exactly where you are supposed to be right now.  Find your strength. In this Episode:     Cynthia Besteman was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and threw out all of her toxic skincare products when she realized that they weren't the "natural" products they promised to be. In 2015 Violets Are Blue is launched. She used her knowledge and passion for naturally-derived skincare ingredients to formulate a consciously-produced line of products, each one a true labor of love. In addition to developing new products for the Signature and Beloved lines, Cynthia provides patients at the Mt. Sinai Dubin Breast Center in NYC with a gifted package of Beloved products upon their first day of chemotherapy.  She is also proud to have created a company that supports women helping women, with 10% of the purchase price of all products going toward skincare donations for cancer patients. Show notes at https://thegoodlifecoach.com/024. Born in Seattle, Cynthia first landed in New York City determined to find her way as an actress, after completing a major in theater at the University of Oregon. She worked on Broadway for 10yrs before checking out the real estate scene and quickly became one of the top brokers in the city. After receiving a breast cancer diagnosis in 2011, Cynthia's successful career in the cutthroat world of New York City real estate came to a skidding halt. While undergoing treatment, one of her first actions was to toss out all beauty products containing unsafe chemicals and synthetic fragrances, leaving her medicine cabinet bare. She was shocked by the mislabeling of many skincare and beauty products that were classified as "natural" while containing parabens, sulfates, and other chemicals known to work as endocrine disruptors linked to cancer and reproductive concerns. Key Takeaways: Cynthia wanted to bring dignity back to the women being treated for breast cancer.  She created her “Beloved” line which is specifically formulated for women dealing with cancer. Cynthia wants women dealing with breast cancer to be called “warriors” instead of "thrivers and survivors” as she believes that puts too much pressure on people. She helped with the Cancer Wellness Expo in New York City - inviting “ultimate warriors” to come together. Loves speaking about her journey - because you can go through something and come out better.  She launched her company in her 50s.  She says if you know you want to make changes in your life - take action. As long as you have the passion or start the journey to find the passion - it's exciting. Cynthia's 3 Best Tips: Be authentic to you not to anyone else. It's never too late to start something new. It makes you feel younger. Find humor in every circumstance.
