Hey CEO…I don't know about you, but I was addicted to SPEED.No, not the drug kind, but the always-doing kind. You know- the always fitting more in, the forever checking more boxes, the constant being everywhere all-the time kind of speed- especially in my business cuz I had people to serve and goals to reach, you too? Except all that speed only resulted in one thing- HURRY SICKNESS. Perhaps you've heard my story of my diagnosis of Hystericus Globus where my ignoring of the signs I was always going too fast finally caught up with me. The same thing happened to my friend Jennifer Dukes Lee- except her doctor didn't try to hand her a pill to make it all go away. He told her it was a HEART problem, not as in the pumping blood kind, but the what she was running after kind. When I read her story in her book Growing Slow this summer and heard it took a diagnosis of hurry sickness for her too to finally embrace Growing Slow, I couldn't put the book down and had to invite her to be on the podcast. Jennifer Dukes Lee is the bestselling author of several books, including Growing Slow, It's All Under Control, and Stuff I'd Only Tell God. She's a fan of queso, bright lipstick, and singing too loudly to songs with great harmony. She lives on a fifth-generation family farm in Iowa, where she and her husband have made a life of growing crops, pigs, two beautiful humans, and an enduring faith. And you're about to listen in on a very real conversation as we walk through the 4 seasons, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter on the farm and in our hearts and explore the purpose God has behind each one. I have a feeling this is one you're gonna want to listen to again and share with your BIZ BESTIES who also may be addicted to speed and suffering (undiagnosed) from HURRY SICKNESS…cuz I think we all do, especially when trying to scale a business to 6 figures and beyond. It is no accident that our Spiritual Health series started with paying attention and ends with sharing what rumbles in our souls. Only when we wake up to what's bothering us on the inside can we pour it out to the Lord as David did in the psalms.  We must know ourselves – our fears, hopes, dreams, worries, nervous ticks, default coping mechanisms – so we can articulate them to God, not because He doesn't already know them but so we know ourselves in the light of His presence. Because developing the skill of pouring out what you're thinking and feeling is a practice that has laid dormant for many of us, I invited Jennifer Dukes Lee to the show.   Today, Jennifer walks us through: How journaling brings our stuff into the light, What holds us back from sharing our hearts with the Lord, And the two ways we can handle pain.   Quotes about how to pour out your heart through journaling “Journaling is really a voyage of self-discovery.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “Journaling really helps you clear out distressing throughs so that you can move forward with renewed peace.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “Journaling is an opportunity to meet God on the pages.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “What would you say to God if you were completely honest?” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “The psalms are unfiltered cries of people with broken hearts.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “Sometimes we don't want to share our hopes and dreams because to speak it out loud or put it on paper feels like you're setting yourself up for disappointment.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “Your honesty is safe with God.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “The most courageous thing you can do is be honest with yourself.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee   If you'd like to learn more about being honest with God about your dreams, listen in or read on: #45: Refresh your thought-life about your dreams, calling, and next steps with Sarah Birkbeck #88: What to do when you fear naming what you want [Fear Series] #135: Grace vs. Fear: When you worry you're selfish 4 necessary skills to wait well on your dream How we tragically misunderstand Jesus' command to deny ourselves   Grace In Real Life Podcast's 3rd Birthday Giveaway Win books, books, books, + $270 in fun Amazon money + awesome prizes! Come to me all of you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Jesus famously said these words in Matthew 11. He urges His disciples to seek rest in Him, no matter the circumstance and no matter what the world defines as rest. How can we, as Christians, seek this same kind of rest from an unseen God? How can we practice true, Biblical rest and cultivate it in our families? In our homes? In this episode of Holy Hygge, Jamie is joined for one final conversation by Jennifer Dukes Lee on all things rest: what it is, why it acts as a tenet of hygge, and how to practically practice it as believers. About Jennifer: Jennifer Dukes Lee is the author of several best-selling books and Bible studies, including Growing Slow and It's All Under Control. A former metro news reporter, Jennifer still loves to chase a great story. Her favorite one of all: the Good News of Jesus Christ. Jennifer and her husband live on the fifth-generation Lee family farm in Iowa, where they raise crops, pigs and two beautiful humans. While she enjoys speaking at women's conferences across the country, you can usually find her at the neighborhood country church on Sunday mornings. Jennifer loves queso, Netflix binges, and singing too loudly to songs with great harmony. Most of all, she loves God. Once upon a time, she didn't believe in Jesus; now He's her best friend and CEO.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Do you ever feel like life would be easier if you could just control everything? Or, perhaps you'd say you're not controlling...as long as everything goes the way you want it to! Friend, I understand both of those concepts--too well! That's why I invited my friend, author Jennifer Dukes Lee on the show today to talk candidly about it. Jennifer offers some great insights that will encourage your heart if this is an area in which you are wrestling. Here are a few things we talk about today. Why Do We Want to Control Everything? The connection between our desire for approval and control. How it can be very subtle. How high achieving, high capacity women may be more likely to have this challenge. How control keeps us from connection! Why being a 'control freak' is actually an asset in certain professions--but how it may not be an asset at home. How to have a mindset shift in this arena. Why being capable doesn't always equal being called. And so much ore! Week 6: It's All Under Control. We cannot believe we are at the end of this book.  We have enjoyed it so much and learned a lot along the way.  We hope you have as well.  This week we are talking about plans, pinings and a promise.  Jesus already paid every single one of our debts in full when He died on the cross.  Too often, we forget that!  God plants us in a place we never even wanted to be yet find it's what we really need.  When Jennifer said that, we were both like, wow how true is that.  So often we are brought to places we have no desire to be but it's in those places God uses us and we look back on them finding that was exactly where we needed to be at.  So, wherever He is planting your seeds at, tend to them well.  Help them to sprout up into strong flowers.  Flourish in the calling He is leading you into.  You will face struggles throughout every planting but it's in that you grow and become something so beautiful!  Be sure to tune in next week for our Season Finale!  We have a HUGE surprise for you!!

Welcome to Week 2 of It's All Under Control!  We hope you are enjoying it and getting as much from it as we are.  This week we are talking about superpowers.  God designed each of us with a superpower that only we have.  I know that's hard to believe but it's true.  We compared it to Superwoman, she is the only one who can complete specific tasks, that's why she's relied on.  God created you with purpose, He designed you uniquely and specifically for your calling.  There is no one else on this earth that can complete the tasks He's given you.  We often miss out on our superpowers when we keep holding onto the same old path.  We do not have to pick one road and walk that path for the rest of you life.  We hang onto the place we are right now thinking we are stuck there.  We are to come back to the fork in the road daily, asking God to help you choose which way to go.  Are you to go left, right, straight or around the round about?  We will be the miracle for other people and at some point they will be the miracle for us!  God needs you to be that miracle for someone else, focus on what He wants of you and surrender everything keeping you from seeing it through!  You can't walk in your calling when you're still hanging onto control because it stunts your growth. The harvest always comes!  Don't give up, don't hang on to your difficult circumstances.  It will get better and you will come out of it if you just trust God and let Him lead you.

"There's always a harvest," she speaks from experience and confidence. About "Growing Slow": We long to make a break from the fast pace of life, but if we're honest, we're afraid of what we'll miss if we do. Yet when going big and hustling hard leaves us stressed, empty, and out of sorts, perhaps this can be our cue to step into a far more satisfying, sustainable pace. In this crafted, inspiring read, beloved author Jennifer Dukes Lee offers a path to unhurried living by returning to the rhythm of the land and learning the ancient art of Growing Slow.  Jennifer was once at breaking point herself, and tells her story of rude awakening to the ways her chosen lifestyle of running hard, scaling fast, and the never ending chase for results was taking a toll on her body, heart, and soul. But when she finally gave herself permission to believe it takes time to grow good things, she found a new kind of freedom. With eloquent truths and vivid storytelling, Jennifer reflects on the lessons she learned from living on her fifth-generation family farm and the insights she gathered from the purposeful yet never rushed life of Christ. Growing Slow charts a path out of the pressures of bigger, harder, faster, and into a more rooted way of living where the growth of good things is deep and lasting.  Following the rhythms of the natural growing season, Growing Slow will help you: Find the true relief that comes when you stop running and start resting in Jesus Learn practices for unhurrying your heart and mind every day Let go of the pressure and embrace the small, good things already bearing fruit in your life And engage slow growth through reflection prompts and simple application steps Comment on blog or insta to be entered. How does your personality impact your parenting style? Where do you shine and struggle in motherhood? What are some God-centered habits to help you along the way? Slowing down your pace sounds amazing, but how do you do that in real life? How can you practice open-handedness in the dailiness? How can you build rest into a busy season?  In the fourth episode of the Delete + Reset series, author Jennifer Dukes Lee tackles a topic that’s an ongoing struggle for try-hard girls: how to live a slower life when you believe your worth is based on all you do. Jennifer reminds you that good things take time to grow, that if you’re going to live like Jesus, you need to walk at a slower pace, and she defines what it means to have an unhurried heart. You’ll learn how to grow slow in a world that pushes you to keep up, how to replace harmful mindsets with God’s truth, and what to do when you’re tired of a busy life but are terrified of the idea of letting go of All The Things.  Key Quotes “There’s something worse than falling behind and that is not really appreciating and embracing the here-and-now the Lord has given us.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “It takes time to grow good things.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “An unexpected life is not the same thing as a bad life.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “God doesn’t delight in our output as much as He just delights in our ordinary selves.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “All those little things build a life.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “We ourselves are fields. God is planting seeds in us, and He is growing things in us.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee “If I’m going to live like Jesus and be like Jesus, I need to slow down and walk with Jesus.” - Jennifer Dukes Lee  Mentioned in the Podcast Mentioned in the Podcast The FCC requires that I tell you that I'm an Amazon Affiliate, which means I earn a bit of commission on each sale. I had an amazing conversation with Jennifer Dukes Lee in this episode. Jennifer is has actually become such a great friend that I met through social media a few years ago and she is the author of many books, but her recent one is titled It’s All Under Control. This is the episode for those that are trying so hard to do everything for everyone. You have a ton of plates spinning in the air and you feel very responsible for whether or not they stay up or fall. And then at the end of the day you feel weary, wondering if you did enough, and peace just isn’t there. By the end of this episode you won’t feel so alone in this struggle, as well as Jennifer gives us so many nuggets of wisdom to help us point out the lies from the truth. In this episode we cover: What it's like in different stages of motherhood when it comes to feelings of control over our kids. What Jennifer really thinks about the statement "Just give it to God and it will all work out." How we have a certain amount of responsibility on certain things that are in our control. Why she believes that when life hits you with the unexpected, the harvest will still come. I hope this episode opens your eyes to the possibility that you may have unhealthy control issues and how to navigate this area of relentless control in a healthy, biblical way. Okay, so it's hard for me to pick favorite episodes of my podcast... because that kind of feels like picking a favorite child. BUT, I have to say that this week's episode is probably going to be one of my very favorites. Because the message of this episode is one that has personally transformed my life in such a big way. You see, I used to be so scared to invite people into my home. Hospitality felt like something I just wasn’t good at. In fact, I told myself for a long time that I’m an introverted person who is a homebody and who doesn’t host things or initiate. And by telling myself this, I had convinced myself that hosting and initiating weren’t my gifts or my personality. It was safer to wait to let other people do the inviting. It was safer to convince myself I wasn’t the type to step out, step up, initiate, or lead. But all that changed when I read Just Open the Door by Jen Schmidt. It’s a book written specifically for people like me who feel so awkward about the whole hospitality thing. Jen sent me a pre-release copy of her book in December of 2017. I remember getting that copy and planning to just quickly read it while we were driving to Kansas to visit family for Christmas. She had asked me to endorse it and I had said yes just because Jen is a longtime friend and I wanted to support her. But as I read the book, I felt like I was being called to do much more than just write an endorsement for the book — I felt stirred to step way outside my comfort zone and commit to opening up our home every single week in 2018. I had no idea how that was going to transform my life! Listen to today's podcast to hear the whole story...   In This Episode: [02:04] - Why we let our daughter get a phone when she was 12... and why we might not let our other kids get one until they are older. [04:53] - I share about my very favorite mascara! [08:18] - I talk about my book pick for this week, and share my experience with it and why it was so powerful for me (as well as a few critiques of it -- because you know I can't help but be honest!). [09:42] - Hospitality used to feel like something that I just wasn’t good at. That changed when I read Just Open the Door by today’s guest, Jen Schmidt! [12:11] - What motivated Jen to write a book on the topic of opening one’s door? [16:14] - Jen gives some ideas and suggestions for people who feel like they can’t afford to host, their house isn’t big enough or clean enough, or they don’t cook well enough. [21:01] - Jen shares her words of wisdom for a woman who wants to open her door but doesn’t even know where to start. [24:47] - This time, I’m going to change things up a bit and close the show by telling you about the commitment I made for 2018 to open our door every single week and give you a challenge, if you're brave enough to accept it (and I hope you are!) Jennifer Dukes Lee is an author, speaker, mom and farmer’s wife. She’s also a gal who was taken on a surrender journey and graciously wrote about her lessons so that we could all learn from them. Her newest book, It’s All Under Control released in September 2018. In This Episode You’ll Hear: Why Jennifer wrote It’s All Under Control and who it’s for. Why it’s so important to take Jesus off of our to do list. Why true intimacy with Jesus feels so scary.   Jennifer’s system of Do, delegate and dismiss. NJ and Jennifer talk about life in Small Town, USA. Jennifer’s role as DJ in her country church. Here are our biggest takeaways from this episode of the Working Christian Mom podcast with Jennifer Dukes Lee. Your relationship with Jesus goes beyond your to do list (Starts at 8:27). Jennifer realized that spending time with Jesus was becoming another check she could make on her to do list. In fact, she even wrote GOD at the top of her list everyday and checked it off. What she realized was that God desires for us to be ALL IN with our relationship. He wants more than just the 15 minutes we give him in the morning and He wants to be be invited in to dwell in  every area of our life. It can be scary to get real and vulnerable with Jesus…. Which is why some people keep him at arm's length, on a to do list or in a box. (Starts at 12:33) Jennifer thinks a big reason why this happens is because we’re afraid of what Jesus might ask us to do or tell us we need to do. We’re afraid of giving Him every nook and cranny of our lives. When she pictures Jesus, she pictures Him sitting cross legged on her bed. This helps her to remember Jesus as a friend who cares for and listens to her. NJ pictures Jesus brushing her hair…. Something her mom did for her a child (NJ’s mom passed away in 2007).   It’s 100% okay to say no… even to great things. Do, delegate, dismiss. (Starts at 28:45) When she felt like she needed more breathing room, Jennifer asked herself what were the essentials, what could she delegate and what could be dismissed. When she did that, there were things that came across her desk that were great opportunities, but the timing was wrong for her. She said no to great things and in doing so, was able to find margin in other areas of her life. She also said no to a few volunteer opportunities in her community and to a ministry at church. Too much of a good thing is still too much.   Links and products mentioned [affiliate links are used] Bethany House & Baker Books (in)Courage Brave Love by Lisa Leonard Never Unfriended by Lisa Jo Baker The Cozy Minimalist by the Nester The Cozy Minimalist Home by Myliequinn Smith Ruth Simmons on Instagram It's All Under Control by Jennifer Dukes Lee    About Our Guest: Jennifer Dukes Lee is the author of It’s All Under Control, The Happiness Dare and Love Idol. Jennifer Dukes Lee is the author of It’s All Under Control, along with other books. She is a blogger, a speaker, and a former news reporter for several Midwestern metro newspapers. Jennifer still loves to chase a great story. Nowadays, however, she prefers to write about the remarkably good news of Jesus Christ. Jennifer and her husband live on the Lee family farm in Iowa, where they raise crops, pigs, and two beautiful humans. She attends a small country church, where some Sundays you’ll find her spinning tunes as the church DJ. She’s a big fan of dark chocolate, emojis, eighties music, bright lipstick, and Netflix binges. She wants to live life in such a way that you can’t help but want more of Jesus. Mentioned in the Podcast Busy to Best Challenge More Podcasting from Heidi and Jennifer: What’s Your Happiness Style? An Interview with Jennifer Dukes Lee – Have you ever wondered what makes your heart sing? The Bible says that God created you with a purpose and He wants to join you in fulfilling it!
