Meredith and Kaytee are back with the episode you’ve been waiting for. Our favorite books of 2019! Rather than spending time on all our regular segments, we are diving right into the good stuff. No Bookish Moments, no Current Reads, no Deep Dive, no Pressed books, just a reflection on our 2019 reading year and then the top 10 lists you’ve been waiting for! We are each sharing 10 books we LOVED this year (plus a couple bonus picks that we slide in under the radar). We do a lot of gushing, we have a lot of words, and we think this episode contains the real gems for us and readers like us. If you have books you think we’ll love based on these lists, put them in the comments! If you agree or disagree with a pick, put that in the comments as well! We love hearing from you! Meredith and Kaytee are back in your earbuds this week for another new episode of Currently Reading and we have lots of fun stuff to share with you! First, a quick announcement about our Patron-only book club: we will be discussing The Dream Daughter by Diane Chamberlain, and the author will be joining us to chat about her book on November 17th! So, if you’ve been on the fence about reading or joining our Patreon, now may be the time to do it! Second, we have a Currently Reading Listener Survey for you this week. Please click through to the survey and tell us your thoughts about all things Currently Reading! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a local author event and pre-reading a book for a friend. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’re each sharing two reads this week since Belly Up episodes end up running long. Strong opinions abound in our novels this week! We’ll move on to a short Slow But Steady update from each of us, including a “completed!” update. For our deep dive this week, we are discussing the Currently Reading 2019 Challenge category 11: Books Pressed by an IRL or Online Book Club. We already shared a lot of Book Club thoughts in episode 4 of season 2, so this ends up being an ode to finding your bookish tribe. Finally, this week, we are Bellying Up to the Book Bar with DeeAnn Haworth. This was a bit of a challenge for one of us, but we’re excited to talk about some new to you and to us titles! As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. We’ve got another “first” for the podcast this week! We are talking to our first return guest! You met Mary Heim in Episode 24 when she recorded with Meredith. Now, she’s back to chat with both of us and we’re so excited. Again. ;-) You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: an upcoming bookish holiday (now just past), finishing the second book in a series, and an audiobook binge. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. We’ve got two current reads from each host and Meredith and Mary seem to almost coordinate their picks (we never discuss beforehand, so this is all coincidental), while Kaytee takes each round off to left field. For our deep dive this week, we surprise Mary with a virtual bookish baby shower. This deep dive focuses in on the board books and other titles for ages 0-2 and is the first in a series. We’ll do subsequent chats about favorite books for 2-4 year olds and 5-8 year olds as well. So many great titles in this section! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. This week Meredith and Kaytee are pressing more picture books, while Mary chooses a lovely essay collection she goes back to again and again. As per usual, time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode. If you’d like to listen first and not spoil the surprise, don’t scroll down! . . . . . 3:17 - Still Life by Louise Penny 4:29 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Meredith and Kaytee are back in your earbuds for Episode 11, in which we take a fun little trip down our “book-memory lanes”. You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: A sweet book gift from a friend, and a childhood milestone finally broached. Then we dive into our currently reading lists with three (or more) books from each of us, lots of mysterious picks this week, and one title that we just can’t stop talking about. Next, we take that memory trip and talk about the books that formed us as readers. The memories we have of our childhood reading, the ones that shaped us as teens, and how they turned us into the readers we are today. So many backlist gems in this list! As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to put into every reader’s hands. This week’s picks include a YA pick that’s being made into a Netflix movie and a non-fiction classic that is perfect for everyone on your Christmas list. Meredith and Kaytee are back in your earbuds for a show that required us to put up our dukes to fight with technology in more ways than one. Give us grace on the audio foibles this week, and blame Skype, m’kay? You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: happy podcast vibes and bookish t-shirts. We dive in to discussing 3 books each. Two we really enjoyed and one… not so much. Watch out for those strong opinions in this segment this week! Then we spend a little time talking about Anne Bogel’s new book, I’d Rather Be Reading, and the pieces that resonated with both of us! You’ll also hear our first non-sponsor sponsor segment. Obviously we’re a bit unclear what “sponsorship” means at this point! We finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to put into every reader’s hands, and this week’s picks will either tear out your heart or scare the pee-waddle out of you (Meredith’s phrasing. LOL). Time-stamped show notes are below with references to every book and resource we mentioned in this episode.
