Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: In this episode, I talk with Elisa Pulliam about how we can know Jesus better, gain insight and wisdom through believing God's word, and what it truly means to live by faith, Unblinded Faith. Quotables from the episode: “Unblinded Faith is both for those who have never met Jesus before and want to know, who is God and how do you get to know Him, and what is His truth. But I think there's too many of us that as believers that live blinded, we don't see by faith what God has for us. And so, it was kind of a, two pillars, is the best way to describe it.” “I was trying to live out the hope of Christ, the story of Christ, the promises of God, without allowing them to apply to everything I had already been through in my past…” “My life has been built upon the principles of what I call trap and transform. So, trap is ‘take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ' which is 2 Corinthians 10:5 and then transform is Romans 12:2, ‘be transformed by the renewing of your mind.'” “How do we get ourselves into God's Word and have a deeper desire to have a fresh encounter with God every day, not just for the past but for the now and the future?” “I began to realize that the foundational principles of God's sovereignty, His faithfulness, His kindness, His anger, His wrath, all of it, was shaped through the 18 years that we lived at the boarding school and because of that many of the truths that I was drawn to write about had stories that were related to those years where we lived there.” What can a reader expect when she reads this book? “That people would not walk away feeling like they knew me better but that they knew Jesus better.” How is this devotional different from others? “My hope would be that it creates a pattern for women to end Unblinded Faith and say, hey, I can continue to do this on my own in the Word. And at the same time, it provides a tool for when they're feeling flat, and distant from God and they feel lost, they can pull it out and say I'm going to go through this again and she what God has for me next time” “You don't get spiritually connected to God if you don't connect with God” “I would like to see women walk away and realize that they've seen Him move in their life in a new way that they wouldn't have seen, because they weren't previously looking.” Scripture Referenced: 2 Corinthians 10:5 “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.” Romans 12:2 “Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Recommended Resources: Unblinded Faith: Gaining Spiritual Insight Through Believing God's Word by Elisa Pulliam Impact Together: Biblical Mentoring Simplified by Elisa Pulliam Brave Together: Devoted to God and Each Other by Elisa Pulliam Journey to Freedom: A Bible Study on Identity for Teen Girls by Elisa Pulliam Meet the New You: A 21-Day Plan for Embracing Fresh Attitudes and Focused Habits for Real Life Change by Elisa Pulliam Holy Whole: Guiding You Into Wellness Through Wholehearted Devotion to God by Elisa Pulliam Do You Struggle to Believe God? Feed Your Spirit: A Podcast talking with ordinary people about those moments in life when God’s word gives you just what you need when you need it most. We all have those moments when we randomly open our bible and there it is - His words of faith, renewal, courage, patience, or a good ol’ dose of tough love fills us with what only He can give. Hosted by the 2 Scripture Sisters, Jill and Denise, this conversation-style podcast aims to share stories that will feed your spirit. On today's episode, we are talking with Sianna. Sianna is a working mom, raising two young adult sons, a loving wife, a fearless Christian woman who is bold in sharing the word of God. We talk about how to be adults together with your young adult children, preparing them for a life of independence, giving them the gift of God and showing them how to walk in faith. As mothers, it is often hard for us to let them go but if we raised them to know God and we raised them to trust in His word, they will learn what it means and feels like to give back and to receive the wisdom of when to speak and when to listen. With the determination to consciously live in the word, we invite you to plug in and prepare your heart as we Feed Your Spirit with everyday stories of God’s grace from everyday people. www.2scripturesisters.com Sianna’s favorite... Scripture: John 4:13-15 “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.” Sianna does not necessarily read devotionals but spends a little time every day in the Old Testament, the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs. She feels that she gains a greater understanding of the word when reading in tandem, rather than a micro view. Do you feel like your life is "too far gone?" That God can't make anything of the mistakes you've made? Are you carrying a secret shame in your heart, terrified of the consequences that would ensue if others found out?Maybe your shame is linked to an abortion, and you've decades grieving and carrying it all alone. This episode is especially for you. On this episode of the More to Be Podcast, I'm joined by my friend, Toni McFadden, who is an inspirational woman of God on a mission to lift shame and bring healing to post-abortive women. She humbly shares her story of encountering the redemptive hand of God after a childhood marred by choices she would like to see this next generation handle differently. Do you feel like your family is out of sync? That you're all heading in different directions? That your priorities aren't lining up with your spouse?Well, you're not alone! Most family units lack a sense of mission and purpose. Decisions are made on the fly based on what feels good to the loudest, strongest voice. That kind of dynamic doesn't lead to a family experience that feels good for anyone. The good news is there is another way to do family, whether you're raising littles or getting ready to launch teens into adulthood. There's hope, too, if you find yourself leading your family as a single mom or simply don't have the support of your spouse. On this episode of the More to Be Podcast, I have the delight of chatting with friend and a graduate of the Life Coach Training Course, Kimberly Amici, about how to create family culture. Kim has been passionate about this topic for many years, intentionally creating family culture with her spouse and children, in ways that will inspire you to get creative without becoming overwhelmed. Her practical steps, which shape her Family Culture Project Course, can serve you right where you are today. So grab a notebook and your Bible to discover how God can equip you and lead you to set the culture in your family today. How would you define the relationships in your life? Connected? Disconnected? Physically present but emotionally disengaged? Toxic? The state of our relationships matters much when it comes to the impact on our faith. That's because God designed us to need one another. We're not meant to go through life alone. So what will it take to figure out how to do life together well? In this episode of the More to Be Podcast, Kalie and I jump back into the conversation that kicked off Season 4 and considers the biblical foundation for cultivating T.R.U.E. Connected Relationships. The acronym, T.R.U.E. is derived from a philosophy of natural horsemanship modified by my friend, Shelly, the founder of an equine-assisted therapy center. I've taken it a step further by considering the ways God wants us to cultivate relationships marked by Trust, Respect, Understanding, and Empathy. This episode is jam packed with practical ideas for growing emotionally, spiritually, and relationally, not only for our own personal benefit but also for the sake of impacting others with the love of God in tangible ways. What is your perspective on counseling?Do you feel like it carries a stigma in your circle? That only weak people go for help?Does it feel like a lack of faith to seek out counseling . . . that maybe you just have to pray more? In the last decade of my life, I've experienced tremendous healing from the Lord and radical transformation through the support of a number of counselors. Each one spoke into my life at a time when I could not find the way forward. More prayer didn't work. More Bible study didn't work. More self-control didn't work. By God's grace, I took the advice of a dear friend and got myself into counseling. I discovered that my issues were trauma-related and that healing was indeed possible. I learned how to invite God in to heal my heart. With great and godly support, I walked through forgiveness. I unearthed my identity in Christ. I gained insight into how to cultivate healthy relationships.Yes, I am a great advocate of counseling as much as I am for coaching. But I'm still in shock as to how many people see counseling, and even coaching, through a warped lens. So on this episode of the More to Be Podcast, I invited my friend and licensed psychotherapist, Peggy MacQueen, to join me in debunking the myths of counseling. Peggy's passion is to come alongside those who are hurting and looking for solutions to life’s issues. She believes that one needs to stand on Truth and see oneself as God sees them. In her private practice, Thrive Coaching and Counseling, Peggy uses an eclectic approach to therapy after assessing the needs of the client. She works with clients seeking healing from grief, loss, sexual trauma and abuse, along with anxiety, depression, communication within marriage and family relationships, and teen & young adults. This episode is packed full insight and truth as we debunk the myths around counseling, coaching, and healing that leads to personal, emotional, spiritual, and relational growth. If you're ready to take the next step toward growth with the support of a counselor, you can certainly reach out to Peggy or visit Focus on the Family to find a counselor in your area. If you are not sure if you need coaching or counseling, complete this form and we will be in touch. 5 Myths That Keep Us from Going for Counseling #1 . . . Myth: Counseling is for those who are weak and "crazy.". . . Truth: Counseling is for those choosing to be brave and grow emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. #2 . . . You can seek counseling for:personal growthcommunication skillsrelationship conflictrecovering from loss and griefhealing from trauma of any kind at any time in your lifestruggling with anxietystruggling with an eating disorderstruggling with sadness or depressionstruggling in your faithand more . . . #3 . . . Myth: Counseling makes you dependent on your therapist.. . . Truth: A therapist goal should be that you don't become dependent on them. #4 . . . Myth: Talking through problems with a total stranger won't solve anything.. . . Truth: Talking can lead to clarity of what happened, how you feel, and what you can do moving forward. What is your response when life doesn't go as planned?Do you doubt God's love for you? Question your purpose? Struggle to find your identity, when what you thought would define your life no longer exists as a possibility? On this episode of the More to Be Podcast, I'm joined by Sheridan Voysey, a fellow writer and speaker, as well as broadcaster, for a deeply powerful discussion about what to do when life doesn't go as planned. Sheridan, like many of us, experienced the dashing of dreams and hopes, both professionally and personally. He recounts how walking the road of faith while waiting on God for so many unanswered prayers shaped his identity and purpose. In his most recent book, The Making of Us: Who We Can Become When Life Doesn't Go to Planned, as well as in our conversation, Sheridan invites us to step into his story about his struggle with infertility and becoming a childless family with his wife, Merryn. But this episode isn't simply about their hopes and dreams rewritten -- it's about all of us and what to do when God's ways don't line up with our expectations. You know that you should have boundaries, but why are they so critical, and how do you go about setting them? And what do boundaries have to do with healthy relationships and effective leadership? In this episode of the Healthy Relationships series, I share why boundaries are critical to effective leadership. I also discuss what boundaries look like in real life, and how to practically set boundaries. If you’ve struggled with setting boundaries in the past OR if you feel like defining boundaries seems restrictive, you won’t want to miss today’s episode. For the full show notes for this episode, visit estherlittlefield.com/episode20 Why do we need boundaries? There are three reasons we need boundaries: Boundaries sustain us. They keep us from burnout. Boundaries protect our relationships. Without boundaries we do things without a thought about how they impact those around us. Boundaries bring freedom. When you take into account your personality, preferences, and what you want your life to look like, it creates freedom to do what is most important to you. How do we practically set boundaries? Start with your priorities. What is the most important to you? For me, it’s my family, faith, and work. Take time to think through and use the PowerSheets* tool for extra help. Look at your calendar. My Website | Facebook | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest | Twitter CONNECT WITH LISA… Elisa Pulliam is passionate about inspiring this generation of women to experience a fresh encounter with God for the sake of impacting the next generation. In spite of not growing up in a Christian home, and spending many years in rebellion, Lisa (which is what she prefers to be called and there’s a story about that) came to know Jesus Christ as her personal Savior in the fall of 1993. Ever since the Lord has been in the process of transforming her from the outside in and inside out. It’s this first-hand encounter with God that motivates her to inspire women to pursue God personally and join Him in work in their lives. Soon after launching More to Be, however, Elisa discovered that there was an equally important need to reach women stuck in a rut of poor habits and unhealthy thinking, and began shining the ministry focus towards women seeking spiritual growth and life transformation. She became a certified life coach and later joined Life Breakthrough Academy as a life coach trainer, having no idea at the time that God would use this experience in the writing of Meet the New You: A 21-Day Plan for Embracing Fresh Attitudes and Focused Habits for Real Life Change. Elisa believes each moment of each day belongs to the Lord and strives to be emotionally present and eternally purpose, especially with her husband of 22 years, Stephen, and her four tween through college-age children. Author and life coach Elisa Pulliam shares how consistently diving into scripture can transform our minds to choose the truth first when life is hard and to have fresh encounters with God. “Moving forward as a follower of Christ and living according to the truth of his word requires being in God's word again and again and again like vitamins every day. So, when we need to fight a battle or endure a trial… the Holy Spirit is drawing upon the truths of scriptures that have already been filled in our mind so we can walk that way.” Learn more about Hello Mornings and explore our resources at HelloMornings.org.

On this episode of the More to Be Podcast, Elisa Pulliam is joined by fellow author and friend, Gwen Smith, for the Unblinded Faith Series, inspired by Elisa's newest devotional book, Unblinded Faith: Gaining Spiritual Sight Through Believing God's Word.Gwen Smith is an author, speaker, worship leader, songwriter and volleyball enthusiast who lives in sunny North Carolina and has been married to her hunky college honey, Brad, for 24 years. They are tired parents to three tall, competitive-sport-playing young people, ages 17-21, who keep them on their toes and on their knees. Her online friends meet at GwenSmith.net to connect and be encouraged, and her goal is to help women know and trust God more. Gwen’s latest book, I Want It ALL, encourages readers to “press on to take possession of God’s promises,” and comes complete with a Bible study guide and questions for reflection. Gwen speaks, leads worship, and eats potato chips at women’s events everywhere, and she is a co-founder of the conference and devotional ministry Girlfriends in God.In this episode, Be Strong and Steadfast, Gwen shares with us how her journey of faith began strong, went off course, and has returned to a full embrace of Jesus and His Word as well as the way prayer can look different for each of us. After considering the story, commands, and promises found Joshua 1:1-9, Gwen describes the rather traumatic fire that burned down her house and God's provisions throughout that trial. She and Elisa round out their chat with an unexpected turn, considering what it looks like to run the spiritual race in spite of opposition and the similarities to what we experience in our earthly bodies, touching upon Galatians 3:3 and Joshua 1:8.Related ContentGet your copy of Unblinded Faith wherever books are sold. On this episode of the More to Be Podcast, Elisa Pulliam is joined by fellow author and friend, Jennifer Dukes Lee, in the kick off for the Unblinded Faith Series, inspired by Elisa's newest devotional book, Unblinded Faith: Gaining Spiritual Sight Through Believing God's Word. Jennifer is the author of The Happiness Dare and Love Idol. She is a popular blogger, writer for Dayspring’s (in)courage, and a speaker at women’s conferences across the United States. Her words have been featured on numerous podcasts, radio programs, Proverbs 31 Ministries, Fox News Opinion, the Des Moines Register, and Today’s Christian Woman.A former news reporter for several Midwestern newspapers, Jennifer still loves to chase a great story. Nowadays, however, she prefers to write about the remarkably good news of Jesus Christ. She clings to the hope of the Cross and is passionate about sharing the gospel through story. She believes in miracles; she is one. She marvels at God’s unrelenting grace for people who mess up—stumbling sinners like her, who have been made whole through Christ.Jennifer and her husband live on the Lee family farm, where they raise crops, pigs, and two humans. She attends a small country church where some Sundays you’ll find her spinning tunes as the church deejay. She’s a big fan of dark chocolate, emojis, eighties music, bright lipstick, and Netflix binges. She wants to live life in such a way that you can’t help but want more of Jesus. In this episode, Be Happy, Jennifer shares the journey of how she discovered that happiness is actually a part of God's design for our lives. She and Elisa chat about the Parable of the Talents, found in Matthew 25:14-30, and her Happiness Style Assessment can help us embrace the way God designed us to experience happiness.HighlightsWriting about faith is how I make sense of the world around me. - JenniferIt is my nature to ask why, and I've come to accept that? - JenniferSilent doubts rarely find answers. - JenniferContinuing to move forward, confident that God's purposes will prevail. - ElisaMaking daily decisions with confidences in God's purposes . . . that's a life of unblinded faith. - ElisaWe are entrusted by God with this . . . life. - ElisaGod is kind and loving, wanting His children to be in the protection of His fold. - ElisaGod, show me who you really are! - ElisaHappiness is not the opposite of holiness. - JenniferWe need to take back happiness. - JenniferChallenge QuestionsGo take the Happiness Style Quiz to be affirmed in who you are!Take a few minutes to prayerfully consider how you're stewarding your talents. I've been learning lately, that I want to be ready for every situation He might want to use me in. Whether it's leading my child to Jesus, having the patience to invest in neighborhood kids, or using my skills and talents to help others, I am passionate about constantly growing and refining myself so that I can be ready when God wants to use me. I know that because you're taking the time to read blogs like this, you want that too. Whether you have healing that needs to take place first, or whether you are ready to push yourself to learn new things, we are all on a journey toward excellence. But how?
