Send us a textAreo Hotah watches as the skull of the Mountain is presented to Prince Doran Martell. Finally peace between Dorne and the Iron Throne, predicted no one, ever. Mackelly and Simon roll out the barbed wire and start digging the trenches.Chapter Review:In the Old Palace of Sunspear, Areo Hotah watches as Maester Caleotte delivers an ebony chest to Prince Doran Martell. Inside is the skull of Gregor Clegane, which Obara Sand places on a marble pedestal. Doran declares that “the Mountain rides no more.” Ser Balon Swann, there on behalf of Queen Cersei, is made uneasy by the spicy food, the politics, and Princess Arianne's careful attention.Cersei's letter requests that Myrcella visit King's Landing, with Trystane to accompany her and Doran to take Oberyn's seat on the small council. Doran suggests they travel by ship, and Balon's reluctance to travel by sea does not go unnoticed. After the feast, Doran gathers Obara, Nymeria, Tyene, Arianne, Ellaria, and Hotah in his solar. Ellaria breaks at the Sand Snakes' refusal to accept the end of the blood feud with the Lannisters, rejecting the endless cycle of vengeance. When she leaves, the Sand Snakes demand war, but Doran forces them to swear obedience before revealing that Cersei's invitation is a trap meant to kill Trystane on the road. Instead of violating guest right by killing Swann, Doran assigns each Sand Snake a role: Obara will lead Swann to hunt Darkstar, Nymeria will escort Myrcella to court and take the small council seat, and Tyene will infiltrate the Sept of Baelor. Arianne will remain in Sunspear as his heir. As plans move forward, Dorne prepares to strike back its own way.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Areo Hotah - Captain in Prince Doran Martell's service.Prince Doran Martell - Infirmed ruler of Dorne.Princess Arianne Martell - Princess of Dorne. Welcome to Autumn-ish Book Club! In this flash analysis series, we take an academic approach to some of the most talked-about books in Romantasy and fantasy today. With over 13 years of combined academic literary training, we bring a critical lens to fandom favorites while keeping the discussion fun, thought-provoking, and accessible. In this episode, we're discussing The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem. We explore how Hashem intertwines Egyptian-inspired mythology with epic fantasy politics to tell a story of rebellion, identity, and survival. Through Sylvia's journey as the last heir of a fallen kingdom forced into hiding, we analyze themes of legacy, vengeance, and the tension between duty and desire. We also unpack how Hashem uses slow-burn romance, political intrigue, and moral ambiguity to craft a richly layered debut that challenges traditional hero narratives within the Romantasy genre. This episode is perfect for listeners looking for a Jasad Heir book discussion or in-depth Sara Hashem analysis, as we explore how her world-building, magic system, and character dynamics position her among the next generation of standout Romantasy authors. Whether you're drawn to stories of secret royalty, forbidden love, or morally gray magic, this conversation dives deep into what makes The Jasad Heir a must-read for fantasy fans and BookTok readers alike. With over 13 years of combined academic literary training, we bring a critical lens to fandom favorites while keeping the discussion fun, thought-provoking, and accessible. In this episode, we're discussing Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. We explore how Aveyard blends dystopian and fantasy elements to craft a world divided by blood—where the powerful Silvers rule over the oppressed Reds. Through Mare Barrow's transformation from street thief to symbol of rebellion, we analyze themes of power, privilege, and identity, and how Aveyard uses her heroine's voice to interrogate systems of inequality and control. We also dive into the novel's exploration of class revolution, propaganda, and betrayal, and examine how Red Queen established itself as one of the most influential YA fantasy series of the 2010s. This episode is perfect for fans searching for a Victoria Aveyard Red Queen analysis or a deep-dive book discussion on one of the most iconic YA fantasy and dystopian romantasy series of the last decade. The Vermont Conversation with David Goodman
Oscar Mayer heir Chuck Collins on how billionaires are fleecing everyone

Chuck Collins, the heir to the Oscar Mayer fortune, gave away his millions to progressive political causes when he was in his twenties. Ever since, the resident of Guilford has fought to expose how the rich make themselves richer at everyone else's expense. In his new book, "Burned by Billionaires: How Concentrated Wealth and Power are Ruining Our Lives and Planet," Collins shows how the actions of the top .01% have dire consequences for everyone else. He argues that when the system is rigged to favor to rich, working people pay the price in higher taxes, fewer affordable houses and a health care system stripped of both health and care. Collins is a senior scholar at the Institute for Policy Studies where he co-edits Inequality.org. He writes the Oligarch Watch column for The Nation. He is the author of a number of books, including "Born on Third Base: A One Percenter Makes the Case for Tackling Inequality, Bringing Wealth Home, and Committing to the Common Good"; and with Bill Gates Sr., "Wealth and Our Commonwealth," a case for taxing inherited fortunes. Collins says we are living through a new Gilded Age. In the first Gilded Age, which lasted from about the end of the Civil War to 1900, “there were 400 wealthy families that by some estimates may have had 40 to 50% of all the wealth in the country,” Collins told the Vermont Conversation. But from 2020 to 2022, “the flow of billionaire wealth, not just to the 1% but the top one tenth of 1% in the billionaire class, is dizzying.” He said that the combined wealth of US billionaires went from under $3 trillion at the beginning of the pandemic to $7.8 trillion by the end.“Pretty much everything you care about is undermined by that concentration of wealth and power: your health, your housing, the quality of your environment.”Collins warned of the danger of “billionaire capture.”“You have the billionaires lining up behind one particular presidential candidate who has totally delivered for the billionaire class to the point where our political system is captured. ... They are using that government shutdown as a way to shrink government and lay off workers. And we're not even going to publish unemployment rates and the data necessary for us to understand what's happening in the economy.”Collins believes that change will come from both the grassroots and from “cracks within the billionaire elites that we should be paying attention to,” such as those who want to address climate change.“As people start to see how their pockets are getting picked, they will wake up and want to push back on this oligarchic capture of our society.”Collins says that change begins by taxing enormous wealth, reinvesting in social programs, and in grassroots mobilizations such as “No Kings Day” that represent “an awakening that we have never seen.”“We have to say, Look, we're not going to vote for people who are going to be lapdogs of the billionaires. ... We're going to see people run for Congress and win and run for higher office saying, I want an economy that works for everybody, not just the billionaires.”

In this episode, we're discussing Blood of Hercules by Jasmin Mas. We explore how Mas blends Greek mythology with Romantasy storytelling, the way her heroine's journey reframes themes of legacy, sacrifice, and divine power, and how the novel's exploration of fate versus free will shapes both character arcs and narrative tension. We also dive into how Mas's reimagining of Hercules' myth offers fresh commentary on gender, strength, and what it truly means to be a mythical hero in a modern fantasy. This season, we'll be covering: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins A Cruel Thirst by Angela Montoya When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker Where the Shadows Meet by Patrice Caldwell Blood of Hercules by Jasmin Mas Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem And when book club wraps up, get ready! Our next full literary analysis will dive into Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas. If you're new here, we also have full seasons analyzing A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Frost and Starlight, House of Earth and Blood, House of Sky and Breath, Throne of Glass, and Crown of Midnight. Go back and check those out to see how we break down metaphors, symbolism, narrative structure, and character arcs through multiple literary lenses. Plus, we're thrilled to announce our newest venture: The Subtext Society Journal—the first of its kind, dedicated to Romance, Romantasy, and fandom with an academic yet accessible voice. We're publishing original essays and thought pieces, and we encourage listeners to submit their own articles for a chance to be featured. If you love Sarah J. Today on the podcast is Ty Cirino.Ty is the #2 returner in Oregon 5A cross country, out of Central High School in Independence, Oregon. With the graduation of Tayvon Kitchen and Josiah Tostenson this past spring, the door is open in Oregon high school XCTy Cirino is a possible heir to the throne. As a junior, Ty won the The Mook XC Invite at Alderbrook in a new course record of 14:43 (which was just recently broken by Kellen Williams in 14:28). Ty also finished 2nd at the Rose City Invitational in 14:35. After finishing 4th at Oregon 5A State Cross Country as a junior and placing 3rd in both the 1500 and 3K this past track season, many have been expecting Ty to rise to the occasion this cross-country season. But, it hasn't been without struggle. Despite a groundbreaking summer of training, Ty sustained a tiny flare-up that has temporarily sidelined him for a couple weeks to end his September. However, as we head into October, and as you will learn today, Ty believes that this setback could be his strength.Aside from a minor setback, Ty and I go in-depth on his thoughts on the competition in the northwest this cross-country season, as well as his thoughts on the change of the NXR location, why a state title would mean more than an NXN birth. We also discuss his preferences and insights tactical racing vs. front running and we run the gauntlet on the recruitment process.Ty definitely has a bright future. I think we all have to remember, that as you will here Ty say today, “championship season is all that matters”. People don't remember who sets a course record in September. But people do remember the clutch moments, whether that be winning a state title, winning NXR, or even winning a national title. It was a refreshing perspective to hear, and I hope you enjoy my conversation with Ty today. Please consider leaving a follow and a five-star review!I hope you enjoy this episode of The Sunday Shakeout!

What Happens to Your Debt When You Die?

Have you ever wondered what happens to your debts when you're gone? Many assume obligations simply vanish, but the truth is more complicated. Without a plan, your loved ones could face creditors, confusion, and unnecessary heartache. Let's explore how debt is handled after death—and the steps you can take now to protect your family.Different Types of DebtNot all debts are treated the same after death.Secured Debt: These are tied to assets such as homes or cars. If you pass away with a mortgage, the heir who inherits the property also inherits the payments. Without the ability to pay, foreclosure or repossession is possible. Unsecured Debt: Credit cards and personal loans fall into this category. Unless someone is a joint account holder, heirs aren't responsible. However, creditors can claim repayment from your estate before anything goes to heirs or charities.Special Cases: Student and Medical DebtStudent Loans: Federal student loans—including Parent PLUS loans—are discharged at death. Private student loans vary: some lenders forgive, others pursue repayment from the estate or co-signer. Medical Debt: Providers sometimes write off smaller balances, but they aren't required to. With rising healthcare costs, debts can be substantial, draining family assets quickly.Protected AssetsSome resources are shielded from creditors:Life insurance proceedsRetirement accounts with named beneficiariesThese bypass the estate entirely and go directly to heirs. But accuracy matters—outdated beneficiary forms can unintentionally disinherit a spouse or child.Other Important ConsiderationsCommunity Property States: In states like Texas, California, and Arizona, marital debts are often shared. Surviving spouses may be held responsible for balances they didn't incur. Co-Signed Loans: Parents, grandparents, and friends often co-sign loans without realizing they'll be responsible if the other borrower passes away.Planning AheadBecause the rules vary, consulting an estate attorney is wise. A one-time meeting can prevent years of stress later. But the best protection is simple: live with as little debt as possible. By building margin and reducing obligations, you bless your family with both financial relief and a legacy of stewardship.Practical steps include:Reviewing accounts regularlyUpdating beneficiariesPaying down debtsOrganizing important recordsCreating a will or trustProverbs 13:22 tells us, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children.” That inheritance is about more than money—it's about modeling wisdom, integrity, and trust in God's provision. By stewarding your finances well today, you not only provide a cleaner path for your loved ones tomorrow but also leave them with a testimony of faith that points them back to Christ. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My grandfather set up 529 plans for my kids years ago. When my older children graduate, can I use any leftover money for my younger daughter's education? And eventually, could I split the remaining funds among all my kids?I'm the Power of Attorney for my 92-year-old mother, who has regularly helped my two sisters financially. I'd like to set up automatic monthly gifts of $1,500 to each of them to stay under the annual gift tax limit. I'm also retired and considering using some of her funds to help with my grandchildren's college expenses. Is that ethical?I'm 71 and have been doing Roth conversions for the past two years. I opened a Roth account six years ago. Can I now withdraw money from those conversions without being restricted by any time limits?I'm 63 and have about $200,000 in a 401(k) from a former employer.
