Typically our podcast and practice focuses on repairing relationships. But within that work is the very real question of “should I stay or should I go?” In this episode we invited Amie Woolsey to discuss the challenging topic of deciding whether to stay in or leave a relationship following serious betrayals such as infidelity, abuse, or neglect. The conversation highlights the complexities and emotional turmoil involved in making such decisions, including the pressure from societal and religious expectations and the fear of outcomes like financial insecurity and the impact on children. Amie emphasizes the importance of personal agency, safety, and self-trust in the decision-making process, advocating for a thoughtful, nuanced approach that goes beyond black-and-white thinking. Amidst municipal elections, Amy reunites with the insightful Matthew Schultz, marking his return since Episode 34: "Rockets and Revelations: Happy New Year?" Together, they explore hot-button topics such as Barbra Streisand's recent lifetime achievement award at the SAG Awards, cancel culture, and recent calls to ban Israel from Eurovision and the Venice Biennale.Dor kicks off the conversation, fondly reminiscing and expressing a longing for Season One Amy – an unapologetic force of nature known for her unapologetic stance on sensitive issues. With Matthew's support, she brings forth a renewed sense of passion and vulnerability, enriching the conversation with depth and authenticity. As the conversation unfolds, Amy and Matt delve into the implications of being canceled in today's world compared to the historical act of excommunication. They navigate their evolving relationships with reading, contemplating societal pressures and the consumption of 'digital parasites' in a nod to Duncan Trussell. Together, they dissect the essence of understanding, contrasting acquisitive reading with deep comprehension. The duo even explores the concept of quantum Zionism in the multiverse, imagining alternate dimensions where the history of Israel and the Jewish people unfolds differently.Recorded on February 27 (Day 144).Matthew Schultz is a writer and rabbinical student commuting between Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Boston. There's a difference between influence and control. Whether we're making suggestions to a coworker, asking a supervisor for support, setting expectations with kids, or interacting with someone in an online forum…we're all attempting to create behavioral change. In “helping people” professions, it's easy to get emotionally involved with our work. This makes it difficult to identify if there are actionable steps we can take to impact bigger, systemic issues vs. when we should put our heads down and focus on the work (or people) in front of us. Just how far should we go in trying to convince other people to act or think a certain way? When is it our job to speak up, and when do we hit the point of diminishing returns? It's easy to let our thoughts spiral about these questions; especially when we have lingering feelings of guilt that we could be doing more. That's why I invited Candice Noss to episode 150 of De Facto Leaders to talk about how educators and therapists can tame their thoughts surrounding leadership and advocacy. Candice Noss is a dynamic and passionate speaker and coach, renowned for transforming and elevating lives through her business, The Mind Body Spirit Trifecta. As an expert in cognitive behavioral therapy, along with her 20+ years working as a Physical Therapist, Candice brings a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience to every stage, course and coaching engagement. By addressing the entire human trifecta, the mind, body and spirit, Candice provides a powerful holistic approach to confident, healthy living. Candice liberates and empowers others to genuinely thrive which ripples into every facet of life. An elevated life elevates business. Candice clarifies how to elevate performance with a mind firmly aligned, a body purposefully loved and a spirit powerfully accessed. In this episode, you'll learn:✅Setting boundaries vs. trying to control: Why making this distinction can reduce burnout and create space for your “dream projects” ✅Allowing consequences vs. forcing compliance: Can and should you “make” kids do their schoolwork (or any other task they don't want to do)?✅How to determine, “What is my job in this scenario?” when advocating for yourself or others, educating the public and/or coworkers, or handling disagreements. The theme this month is: LOVE. This is going to be a month of unpacking a few of the top ways I see the topic of “LOVE” and Gaslighting intersecting. AND we're going to start it off with an amazing colleague that put up a post on social media that read, “embracing your authentic self without fear of rejection can be accomplished when you stop rejecting yourself first.”Can you relate to that statement at all? I messaged her immediately and said, “This! This is what I want to talk about on the pod!”. If you want to be in the know about special deals on my programs, new things I'm launching, conferences I'll be speaking at, and lots of other helpful information and tools, sign up for my newsletter here. Bio: My guest today is Amie Woolsey. Amie Woolsey is a certified betrayal trauma life coach and Brainspotting Practitioner. She has helped hundreds of people reclaim their lives after abuse, betrayal & or divorce, using her extensive experience and holistic approach to healing the heart, mind, and body. There are multiple resources available created by Amie, alongside opportunities for both group and private coaching. Amie is the co-host of The Choose to BE Podcast, creator and host of The Empowered Divorce Podcast, is affiliated with Safe Space, and creator of her signature program, Believing In You, Divorce 101 and Intimacy Within. Story Time: Sarah and Amie have a candid conversation about a variety of ways external gaslighting led to internalizing those messages, which resulted in a variety of ways they rejected themselves... AND about a few key things that helped them in their journey BACK to themselves. Top Take-Aways: There were a number of take-aways throughout the episode, but here I'll list the three pillars Amie mentioned as her pillars of coaching. They are: Awareness, Acceptance, and Agency. Awareness = getting curious when we are "spinning" and feeling uncertain;Acceptance = the release of self-judgement;Agency = when we accept we gain clarity, and are able to move into changing any behaviors we want to. If you want to understand more about the ways gaslighting has shown up in your life, and robbed you of knowing yourself, loving yourself, and trusting yourself, check out my and Amie's websites. We both have offerings that will help you break the hold self-gaslighting has had over you and help you step into that Radical self-love.I encourage you to follow me and Amie on your preferred social media platform… I'm on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Amie is also on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.And remember – you may have crashed and burned; been broke and hurt, but damn it, You're a phoenix and you're rising again. I think it's time we fly.

Special guest, Matthew Schultz, a writer and rabbinical student, engages in a riveting conversation at the start of a new year marked by a barrage of rockets from Hamas at the stroke of midnight and a hotly anticipated ruling from the Israeli Supreme Court on New Year's Day regarding the controversial reasonableness law. Schultz's unique insights shed light on the evolving landscape of Jewish life in Israel, especially since October 7th.As a weekly columnist for the Jewish Journal and co-host of the "How to Be Podcast," Schultz offers profound insights into the post-war landscape of Israeli culture and a unique perspective on Israel, Judaism, and Jewish culture. In a nod to Anita Shapira's insights on Israeli literature, Schultz emphasizes the “"intrusion of the political on the personal," and the difficulty of parsing personal experiences from the political landscape in the context of 2023. Their conversation embodies this intersection, coursing from discussions on forgiveness in the wake of Kanye West's Hebrew-language Instagram post apology to Ilana Glazer's portrayal of Jewish culture, and more. A conversation about Schultz's long-form Instagram posts (@matthew_a_schultz), an attempt to spark a more nuanced and informed discussion about Israel, evolves into a discussion of his own shifted perspectives on Israel and media literacy.Together, Schultz and Amy unpack the layers of complexity that define a nation at a crossroads, delving into the soul of a people grappling with identity, culture, and faith. How does one navigate the waters of media literacy in an age where news is a relentless tide that shapes our perceptions and beliefs? How does a society reconcile the religious-secular divide that is both a source of tension and a wellspring of cultural richness? As 2024 unfolds, the questions asked are more than reflections on the past; they are a search for a way forward. Through Matt's insights and Amy's passionate inquiry, listeners are invited to join them on a journey that is as much about understanding the world as it is about finding hope amidst the chaos.Recorded on January 2 (Day 88).Thanks for tuning in!

It's not just a nice-to-have; it's a necessity for a thriving relationship." Many couples fall into the trap of prioritizing individual responsibilities and neglecting the importance of having fun together. "Fear is going to be a constant in your life. And if you're not willing to learn how to work with that fear, if you're not willing to learn how to manage that fear, if you're not willing to learn how to utilize that fear to empower you, you're going to be stuck in mediocrity for the rest of your life." For the longest time, fear held me back from achieving my goals, even though I'd experienced a wide range of emotions, from sadness to joy. But I was too focused on doing rather than being. It wasn't until a gift of desperation forced me to confront my fears that I realized how unsafe I felt in my body. Being present in the moment allowed me to internalize some powerful advice that led to significant changes in my life. When we don't feel safe in our bodies, it can trigger our autonomic responses and prevent us from being present in the moment. So, how can we overcome our fears and be present in the moment? In this episode of "Destined to Be," I'll share my recent experiences of connecting deeply with others, cultivating meaningful experiences, and holding space for myself. These elements (which are often sidestepped) have been critical to my growth and evolution. Giving ourselves grace, compassion, and the ability to breathe is essential, especially when we don't feel safe in our bodies. In this episode, you'll hear my insights on why feeling safe in our bodies is crucial, how holding space for ourselves can prevent triggers, and why breaking free from fear is the key to living intentionally.
