The Lodger (1944) Directed by John Brahm and screenplay written by Barre Lyndon based on the novel of the same name by Marie Belloc Lowndes.  The book was filmed once before as a silent film by Alfred Hitchcock. The film stars Merle Oberon, George Sanders and Laird Cregar.  The film revolves around the story of Jack the Ripper.    The film is highly regarded as a classic film noir.    Time After Time (1979)   This Metrocolor Science Fiction film is written and directed by Nicholas Meyer and based on an unfinished manuscript by Karl Alexander. The story centres around HG Wells and his time machine as he goes back in time to pursue Jack the Ripper.  The film stars David Warner, Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen. The film would be filmed on location in San Franscisco and would highlight the city.  Interestingly, Malcolm McDowell wanted to give a true characterisation to H G Wells and heard his recorded voice.  After hearing Wells' high pitched south east London accent, he decided to use a more distinct voice and accent.   We urge all our listeners to listen to this fantastic podcast – The Story Geeks available by clicking on this link:  iTunes:    or Website:  or TuneIn Radio   Opening Credits; Introduction – Rose and Thorn of the Week (1.32); Story Geeks (14.39); Forming the Plot (17.06); Film Trailer (18.05); Lights, Camera, Action (20.17); Forming The Plot (Take 2) (53.26); Trailer (Take 2) (54.05); Lights, Camera, Action (Take 2) (57.01); Epilogue (1:34.19); End Credits (1:36.30); Closing Credits (1:37.35)   Opening and Closing Credits – thanking BenSounds for our fantastic Opening and Closing Credits.

Baltimore City has lost 10,000 people or more since 2015. Meanwhile, the state’s population is growing. Why are people leaving the city, and what can be done to stop the drain? We talk to sociologist Karl Alexander about how adapting schools to parents’ goals might keep middle-class families in the city. And professor Seema Iyer, head of the Baltimore Neighborhood Indicators Alliance, tells what neighbors can do to hold on to their communities:

The Long Shadow: Family Background, Disadvantaged Urban Youth and the Transition to Adulthood tells the story of the Baltimore-based Beginning School Study Youth Panel (BSSYP), a probability sample of typical urban children who came of age over the last decades of the 20th Century and into the first decade of the 21st. It is an account of their social mobility from origins to destinations, framed in life-course perspective. Two characteristic mobility paths are documented, both grounded in family resources: 1) status attainment through school serves mainly to preserve middle class privilege across generations; 2) status attainment in the non-college workforce privileges lower SES whites over African Americans of like background, white men most immediately through access to high wage employment in the remnants of Baltimore’s old industrial economy and then, derivatively, to the lower SES white women who marry and partner with them.

The Imperial Silver Collection owes its interesting and comprehensive collection of Far Eastern porcelain dating from around 1700 to Duke Alexander of Lorraine. Karl Alexander was the younger brother of Emperor Franz Stephan, the husband of Maria Theresa. He married the latter’s only sister, Maria Anna, in 1744. After the wedding the young couple moved to Brussels, where Karl Alexander became governor of the Netherlands. He was a keen collector, a habit which led to him accumulating large debts. After his death his nephew Emperor Joseph II was appointed executor of his estate, and he had a large part of the collection auctioned off in Brussels. The valuable Imari porcelain, however, was added to the court holdings in Vienna. Some of the surviving pieces represent an interesting symbiosis between Far Eastern and European culture. These porcelain plates and vessels from Japan and China were fitted with mounts by European silversmiths to adapt them for court use. Their blue, red and gold painted decoration is in the typical colours of Japanese porcelain of that epoch, which is known as Imari ware after the trading port it was exported from. The centrepiece in the form of a rocky landscape was probably made by a Viennese silversmith. Incense could be placed inside the base of the silver tree, with the aromatic smoke escaping through the holes in the trunk. The fruits made of Chinese enamel also contained fragrant essences.www.hofburg-wien.at | Download Tour-Guide (PDF)© by Schloß Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H.
