The general reaction to the destruction of Metropolis in Man of Steel made director Zack Snyder and co-writer David S. Goyer feel like a response was necessary in the sequel. As a result, they felt that there was only one … Continue reading →
"The Crow" remake starring Bill Skaarsgaard is on the horizon, so Gabe and Connor look at the last theatrical movie in the franchise: "The Crow: City of Angels." Forced to become an anthology series after the tragic loss of Brandon Lee, The Crow franchise flopped so hard with this second effort that the series went straight-to-video afterwards. That's largely thanks to meddling from everyone's favorite guy, Harvey Weinstein, who butchered the original vision by director Tim Pope and screenwriter David S. Goyer.Still, after the mediocore-to-spectacularly awful sequels that came afterwards, some fans appreciate this flick's style and consider it a worthy successor to the beloved original. So Gabe and Connor ask if COA was DOA, or if there's something to be salvaged in this strange concoction of BDSM, Nu Metal, and smog. We close out the Blade series with a wild one. Mike and Devaughn talk about a movie that has more going on behind the scenes than in front of the camera. We take our time to discuss and maybe even debunk the stories of improper behavior of series star Wesley Snipes on the set of Trinity, his animosity towards writer/director David S Goyer and costars Ryan Reynolds and Jessica Biel, how Patton Oswalt's off the cuff remarks became accepted truth, and Snipes legitimate frustrations as both an executive producer who felt ignored and the franchise star who felt the series being taken away from him. There's also a whole ass move it discuss, and, well it's not great. Yet it's not as bad as people who have you believe. With a stacked cast, including indie darling Parker Posey having the time of her life, decent action set pieces and sweaty one liners delivered by Mr. Reynolds, this one has more going on for it than we remembered, despite the presence of one of cinema's weakest portrayals of Dracula. We also speculate on the future of the series, and ask with everything being so up in the air, "Why not Snipes?"
Send us a Text Message.BATMAN BEGINSCast aside your Batnipples! As a certain Patrick Bateman lookalike once said, “Well, a guy who dresses up like a bat clearly has issues,” and this week, TGTPTU tackles these issues in Sir Christopher Nolan's entry into the franchise that would define his middle career with BATMAN BEGINS (2005). Former cohost Jack returns from France to talk Bat and comics with a Gen Z take. Meanwhile, Ken, Thomas, and Ryan grapple and claw and melee in difficult to parse action sequences to control the mic and effuse about this first of the three Batman films covered this season of NOLAN VOID.After Insomnia, Sir Nolan's efforts to get his and Jim Carrey's project (a Howard Hughes' late-in-life insanity film) off the ground (or out the hotel penthouse) were stymied by Michael Mann developing The Aviator, a film that would take off with Scorsese as captain. Without a script of his own or film in development, Nolan would meet with the Warner Bros (and maybe their sister Dot) to launch a “reboot” of the Batman franchise with Hollywood's resident comic book aficionado David S. Goyer.Together with production designer Nathan Crowley who'd worked with him on Insomnia for Warner Brothers, Sir Nolan worked to create a realism beyond what had come before in comic book films. In fact, per Nolan, “Everything we did was about being in massive denial that there was such a thing as [a comic book movie].”Casting Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne (Batman takes nearly an hour to appear onscreen) and making use of his split persona from American Psycho, Bale is joined by a series of heavy hitters, including Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Rutger Hauer, pod-fav Ken Watanabe, the estimable Mark Boone Jr (back from Memento), and, perhaps oddly cast and not-to-return to the franchise, Katie Holmes.Exclusive this week! Hear the Batman Baggins summary delivered by Ken but written by our guest director, someone really famous and from New Zealand and whose name rhymes with Jeter Packson, who may have confused Nolan's film with his own take on rebooting the Dark Knight as so many directors took a stab at the reboot post-Schumacher Schumacher Schumacher (hopefully you weren't reading this aloud before a mirror). Also, enjoy this week an experimental sound mix to cover for Thomas's brief absence from the mike as he deals with a dog releasing mind-altering gas.So listen and continue to download and listen through the remainder of Nolan Void, for there will be a Batman in the pairing for all remaining episodes. What, you ask? Will the hosts this season get caught by their very own temporal pincer movement by reviewing The Dark Knight Rises before The Dark Knight? Stay tuned to upcoming and exciting (perhaps, anything's possible, but most at least one of the following four episodes will be moderately amusing) episodes to find out.Now please forgive us. While on hiatus, Enrique decided to take things into his ow hands to guarantee that DBB Inc, has never missed out on a week in their entire damn career! After declaring, Robert Pattison's The Batman is the best single Batman movie, he goes back and watches what people consider the definitive trilogy to decide once and for all, for himself of course. Movie Summary: The Dark Knight Rises is a 2012 superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan Nolan, and the story with David S. Goyer. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, it is the final installment in Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, and the sequel to The Dark Knight (2008). The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne / Batman, alongside Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Morgan Freeman. Eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, the terrorist Bane forces Bruce Wayne to resume his role as Batman and save Gotham City from nuclear destruction. Christopher Nolan was hesitant about returning to the series for a third film, but agreed after developing a story with his brother and Goyer that he felt would conclude the series on a satisfactory note. Nolan drew inspiration from Bane's comic book debut in the 1993 "Knightfall" storyline, the 1986 series The Dark Knight Returns, and the 1999 storyline "No Man's Land". Filming took place from May to November 2011 in locations including Jodhpur, London, Nottingham, Glasgow, Los Angeles, New York City, Newark, and Pittsburgh. Nolan used IMAX 70 mm film cameras for much of the filming, including the first six minutes of the film, to optimize the quality of the picture. A vehicle variation of the Batplane and Batcopter termed the "Bat", an underground prison set, and a new Batcave set were created specifically for the film. As with The Dark Knight, viral marketing campaigns began early during production. When filming concluded, Warner Bros. refocused its campaign, developing promotional websites, releasing the first six minutes of the film, screening theatrical trailers, and sending out information regarding the film's plot.

Senior Writer Aaron Sarnecky and Senior TV Columnist Josh Sarnecky are back for another movie retrospective. This month they're talking about Blade for its 25th anniversary. Blade is a superhero film directed by Stephen Norrington and written by David S. Goyer, the latter of whom The Pop Break interviewed at NYCC. Based on the Marvel Comics character created by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan, the movie opened in theaters on August 21, 1998. The film follows Blade (Wesley Snipes), a half-vampire who hunts the secret society of vampires. His friends include his mentor Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson) and hematologist Dr. Karen Jenson (N'Bushe Wright). The three work together to prevent the vampire Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) from awakening an ancient blood god. Blade received mixed reviews from critics but was popular with audiences, grossing $131.2 million on a $45 million budget. It spawned two sequels and is slated for a reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aaron and Josh talk about the movie's elements, including its plot, characters, action, and effects. They also touch on the comic book movie landscape in 1998 and the film's legacy today. For another comic book movie, you can listen to Aaron and Josh's Man of Steel podcast with Batman By The Numbers host Daniel Cohen. Blade is streaming on Max.
Movie Summary: The Dark Knight is a 2008 superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan from a screenplay co-written with his brother Jonathan. Based on the DC Comics superhero Batman, it is the sequel to Batman Begins (2005) and the second installment in The Dark Knight Trilogy. The plot follows the vigilante Batman, police lieutenant James Gordon, and district attorney Harvey Dent, who form an alliance to dismantle organized crime in Gotham City. Their efforts are derailed by the Joker, an anarchistic mastermind who seeks to test how far the Batman will go to save the city from chaos. The ensemble cast includes Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Morgan Freeman. Warner Bros. Pictures prioritized a sequel following the successful reinvention of the Batman film series with Batman Begins. Christopher and Batman Begins co-writer David S. Goyer developed the story elements, making Dent the central protagonist caught up in the battle between the Batman and the Joker. In writing the screenplay, the Nolans were influenced by 1980s Batman comics and crime drama films, and sought to continue Batman Begins' heightened sense of realism. From April to November 2007, filming took place with a $185 million budget in Chicago and Hong Kong, and on sets in England. The Dark Knight was the first major motion picture to be filmed with high-resolution IMAX cameras. Christopher avoided using computer-generated imagery unless necessary, insisting on practical stunts such as flipping an 18-wheel truck and blowing up a factory.
