On Today's SceneStop, I journey back to the mid 1980s when the city of Fountain Valley, CA played host to Peer Records on Warner and Magnolia streets. What made this store so special to me is that Uniform Choice frontman Pat Dubar worked there, and he sold my mother and I the "Screaming for Change" record before my Bar-Mitzvah.Joining me on this Hot Tub Time Machine-like return to this special shopping center were Golden Ram's Joey Josh Cairns and Litmus Green's Reverend Sean Leonard. Together we combed the plaza looking for the exact location (hint: we never found it), but if you remember where it was please put the answer in the comments section of this post. These videos are part of an ongoing video series chronicling the hardcore punk music scene. They are an addendum to the film Orange County Hardcore Scenester. This is a documentary I made that chronicles the 1990s hardcore punk scene. Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey react to and review the outrageous 2013 apocalyptic horror comedy This is the End, written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Known for its wild mix of raunchy humor, meta satire, and shocking horror elements, the film follows a group of celebrities playing exaggerated versions of themselves as they face the literal end of the world while trapped inside James Franco's Hollywood mansion. The cast features an all-star lineup of comedic talent, including James Franco (127 Hours, Pineapple Express) as himself, Seth Rogen (Superbad, Knocked Up) as himself, Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street, Superbad) as himself, Jay Baruchel (How to Train Your Dragon, She's Out of My League) as himself, Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down, Tropic Thunder) as himself, and Craig Robinson (The Office, Hot Tub Time Machine) as himself. The film also features scene-stealing cameos from Emma Watson (Harry Potter, Beauty and the Beast), Michael Cera (Arrested Development, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Rihanna (Ocean's 8), and Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street, Magic Mike). Some of the most talked-about and highly searched moments include Michael Cera's shocking death scene, Emma Watson wielding an axe, the demonic possession of Jonah Hill, Danny McBride's insane power struggle over food supplies, and the Backstreet Boys' unforgettable Heaven finale. Combining horror, satire, celebrity self-parody, and end-of-days spectacle, This is the End has become a cult comedy classic that balances absurd laughs with surprising scares. Video games and movies seem like a perfect fit. For whatever reasons, adaptations done in either direction do not seem to work so well. Over the past few years, there have been a number of familiar horror franchises turned into games. They have been multiplayer affairs with limited shelf life. What makes the Hellraiser video game different? We really enjoyed In a Violent Nature. It was unique, had some great kills, and had an excellent big bad. It left itself open for a sequel, but is that a good thing? Can a movie shot in this style sustain a franchise or should it be left alone? We talk about the next installment and talk about our reservations.Shaw Studios is responsible for some of the most influential and well-regarded kung-fu movies of all time. Even those who have never seen any of their films are likely familiar with names like Five Deadly Venoms and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. The Battle Wizard definitely belongs on that list.Awesome martial arts fights. A villain with extending metal legs that can break rock. Limb cutting lasers. A protagonist that eats exotic animals. The Battle Wizard has it all and then some. And in between all the wackiness it has a surprisingly well written will they/won't they love story that will gross you out until it warms your heart.Terrestrial has a lot going for it. Its director helmed Hot Tub Time Machine and co-wrote Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. The cast includes Jermaine Fowler and Pauline Chalamet. The premise is a fan favorite that has been used in screwball comedies and sitcoms. So, what happened? The writing is surprisingly dodgy. There is a science fiction aspect that does nothing to the story but seems like it is supposed to be something very important. Even worse, the characters are very poorly done. Most tellingly, Terrestrial goes out of its way to turn the main character into an awful person that is impossible to get behind. Which makes the movie impossible to enjoy. We analyze whether The Accountant 2 improves upon its predecessor as Ben Affleck returns as Christian Wolff, the autistic mathematical genius who serves as both accountant and assassin.• Ben Affleck delivers a more nuanced performance of autism in the sequel, showing detailed mannerisms and speech patterns• The movie portrays autism almost as a superpower rather than a limitation• John Bernthal returns as Christian's brother, with their relationship forming the emotional core of the film• The plot focuses on solving a Treasury chief's murder and rescuing a kidnapped Mexican family• The sequel features more hand-to-hand combat versus the shooting-heavy approach of the first film• The storyline sets up potential for a third installment• We also discuss Hot Tub Time Machine (2010) as a perfect background comedy with nostalgic 80s references• Modern comedies struggle to match the unfiltered humor of earlier decades• Both films receive similar ratings (6-7.5/10) but for very different reasons

Everyone get out your Aqua Net hair spray and G.I. Joe lunchboxes because it is time to hop in the Hot Tub Time Machine and go back to the 80s!  In this, the 80th episode of the Camerosity Podcast, we revisit the decade where Michael Jackson and Madonna reigned supreme, taking a look at everyone's favorite cameras from that decade.  The Nikon F3, Minolta Maxxum 7000, Olympus XA2, the Minox 35 series, Contax RTS II, and many, many more. Joining Anthony, Paul, Theo, and Mike on this show are returning callers AJ Gentile, Mark Faulkner, Miles Libak, Mina Saleeb, Pat Casey, Patrick Rapps, Will Pinkham, and first time caller Christopher Wells. Each person shares stories of the cameras they used during the 1980s, but Patrick Rapps didn't get the message about the 20th century and went back all the way to 1889 with his beautiful and fully functioning Kodak No.2 String Set.  This camera was the follow-up to the original 1888 Kodak and shares many of the same design features, including that camera's distinct round film gate! We get into a little bit of history of early point and shoot cameras and how their autofocus systems work and why so many of these early cameras consistently have such high image quality.  We discuss the history and merits of Kodak's Disc film cameras and two features of those cameras that influenced cameras that would come later.  We revisit the era of electronic still video cameras like the Canon Xap Shop and the original Sony Mavica.  We talk about focusing auto focus cameras and reflect back on how focus screens work from the Rick Oleson episode.  Theo shares with us a strange 3 lens 110 film camera, and finally, we answer a question asked in the Camerosity Facebook page about a recommendation of a compact SLR for a 10 year old. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you! Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show. We LOVE people who are into shooting or collecting cameras, no matter how long you've been doing it, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, the Camerosity Discord server, and right here on mikeeckman.com. We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance.   Our next episode will be Episode 81 and we are planning on tackling the complex and wonderful world of Zeiss-Ikon.  Since the recording of Episode 80 however, some scheduling conflicts have come up which may require us to pivot this show and postpone it.  We won't know until we get closer to the show date, so if Episode 81 comes and it is not about Zeiss, we didn't forget, we just had to change at the last minute.  As of right now however, it is still on.  We will record Episode 81 on Monday, November 11th at 7pm Central Standard Time and 8pm Eastern Standard Time. This time, we covered the final installment of Science Seal Delivered Summer for 2024, diving into "Signed, Sealed, Delivered: A Tale of Three Letters". Here's a synopsis of the ideas and insights we discussed on our podcast. If you haven't tuned in yet, we'd love for you to join us and become a part of the conversation! What We Liked Norman's Character Development: We absolutely adored seeing Norman step up as the marital mentor to Oliver. His growth throughout the series has been remarkable, and his easy and sincere advice made those scenes shine. Normalization of Therapy: Both of us appreciated how the movie normalized therapy for healthy relationships. The depiction of Shane, Oliver, Rita, and Norman going through therapy sessions made it clear that seeking help is a healthy and necessary step for any relationship. Sweet, Small Moments: Several little moments made us smile—from Norman's adorable comment about the sonogram picture to Shane and Oliver's flirty interaction post-honeymoon. The Forest Educator with Ricardo Sierra | A Podcast for Revolutionary Conversations about Nature-Based Education

Ever since I was a kid I was always fascinated by the concept of 'time'.    I know I am not alone, because it's a pretty popular theme over the last four decades or so.  Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle In Time was one of my first steps into a different world.  The time differences in the world of Narnia was pretty interesting!  Then came the wildly unexpected Time Bandits and the fun of Back to the Future. The Time Lords and Dr. Who.  The resetting of time in Edge of Tomorrow high stakes battle for Earth.  Hot Tub Time Machine.  The compression of time in Interstellar and Inception.  HG Wells' The Time Machine.  Groundhog Day.  The Time Heists of Avengers: Endgame and the TVA of Marvel's Loki were some of the more recent forays, but there are literally tons of shows like Quantum Leap, or Travellers, or The Umbrella Academy and yes, Outlander.... I'd like to believe that time travel is possible but it's probably not, at least, not in the way that these shows seem to depict it.  However, there are some situations and experiences that I have had in my forays into nature and leading groups that have broadened my understanding of time and its paradoxes and oddities and gifts, so, I figured we better talk about it! Richard Sanford co-founded the Sanford and Benedict Winery and planted the Sanford and Benedict Vineyard. He founded the Sanford Winery, and he founded the Alma Rosa Winery, all in the Santa Barbara County of California.Richard discusses his sailing career, working in the merchant marine, racing boats recreationally, and as an officer in the United States Navy. He talks about his travels around the globe, both before and after his service in the Vietnam War. He reflects on his short time working in business and education, and then his segue to planting a vineyard in what became the Sta. Rita Hills appellation of California. That vineyard became known as the Sanford and Benedict vineyard, and Richard co-founded the Sanford and Benedict Winery with Michael Benedict to produce wine from that vineyard. They had realized that Santa Barbara County, with a transverse mountain range, offered opportunities for growing vines in areas cooled by winds coming off the Pacific Ocean.Richard remembers his introduction to wine and a bottle of Volnay, and his desire to plant Pinot Noir in the Sanford and Benedict Vineyard. He talks about the early days getting the vineyard going, in an area where Pinot Noir had not been planted previously. He discusses the geography and geology of the place, as well as the history of ownership there. Richard recalls converting a small barn into a winemaking facility, building the fermenters, and inviting his friends to harvest the first grapes from Sanford and Benedict. He also recalls the subsequent visit from the local sheriff. Besides the attention of the police, the activity at Sanford and Benedict also attracted interest from wine writer Robert Lawrence Balzer, who wrote about the wine being made near Lompoc.Richard talks throughout this interview about both the agriculture aspect and the business side of making wine. He notes that tax write offs were an impetus for the planting of many of the vineyards in Santa Barbara County in the 1970s. He talks about the difficulties of dry farming and of organic viticulture in that area. Richard recalls meeting his wife Thekla during a fun sail. And he talks about the tough breakup with his business partner Michael Benedict that would eventually lead Richard to found the Sanford Winery near to the original Sanford and Benedict Vineyard.Richard recalls the Small Winery Technical Society, and the other winemakers in the group, such as Dick Graff and Josh Jensen. He talks about the role that that group played in his own development as a winemaker, and the camaraderie that he found amongst a group of friends who were also competitors in the wine business. Richard thinks on that period with a lot of fondness. He also has a fondness for the period of time where he felt he was at the forefront of wine and food in California, meeting and sharing time with people like Julia Child and Robert Mondavi.Richard shares his memories of visiting Burgundy and meeting vigneron and winery owners like Vincent Leflaive of Domaine Leflaive, Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac, and Aubert de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. Richard notes specifically what he learned while tasting in Burgundy, and what he brought back to his own winemaking work in California.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
