At long last Mark Maddox returns as we wrap up our look at the first six Star Trek feature films with STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. Since this is the last movie to showcase the entire original cast, we take the opportunity to mention how happy we are that VI was the film they went out on and that everyone gets chances to shine. I'm just thrilled we finally get Captain Sulu! We discuss the production push to get this into theaters to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the premiere of the TV show. We praise the return of Nicholas Meyer to the director's chair and point out the many touches that seem to stem from his involvement. This includes the joy of having the Wold Newton family tree brought into onscreen Star Trek, which is probably peak geekiness. The intricate nature of the film's plot comes under scrutiny with us listing the various elements that are woven together perfectly to move the story forward. We discuss the dialog with a few clips to give a taste of the intelligence of the script. Our admiration for the performances gets plenty of time and we single out Christopher Plummer's fantastic turn as Klingon General Chang. Just how much Shakespeare can be wedged into a Trek film, anyway? And is Chang the series' best villain? Others may disagree with us but we make our case.   If you have anything to add to the show thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to write. We love hearing from you and if you want to work ahead it looks like we will be talking about the Star Trek animated series in the future. Thank you for listening and we'll be back soon.

For many of us, our first foray into the world of the art of detection came as we followed the footsteps of Sherlock Holmes. Reading the stories of the great detective's adventures with Dr. Watson may have been what turned some of us into life long lovers of mysteries-- both fiction and the real life variety. One of the best modern writers about Sherlock is Nicholas Meyer. His first novel about the great detective-- the Seven Per Cent Solution-- was published back in 1974 and related the until then unchronicled tale of how Sigmund Freud helped Holmes overcome his addiction to cocaine. It was later made into a film. Since then, Meyer has continued to periodically revisit Holmes, writing several more engaging tales about the detective. And now he is back with another Sherlock Holmes story-- though all of them have been wonderful, this new one is probably his best. Sherlock Holmes and the Telegram from Hell spells out the fascinating and heretofore untold story of a crucial secret mission Holmes and Watson undertook in the United States during the first world war-- at a time when America was not yet involved in the conflict. This week, we're chasing Jack The Ripper through time from 19th century London to 1970s San Francisco and falling in love along the way as SepTIMEber continues with one of the goofier movies we've ever watched for the show. It's 1979's Time After Time, written and directed by Nicholas Meyer and starring Malcolm McDowell, David Warner and Mary Steenburgen. It's a film J Mo torrented more than 15 years ago while searching for an MP3 of the Cyndi Lauper song of the same, it's a tenuous application of our podcast criteria but we'll allow it when the film is this fun. The debut picture from a man who would go on to direct Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan -- with writing and directing credits on several other notable Trek films as well -- it is a great showcase for the energy he can bring to a movie, and the film's clumsier moments lend it a boyish charm befitting of McDowell's portrayal H.G. Wells. It's not a great movie but there's something about it that is worth tracking down. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along this week, you may have a difficult time doing so because Time After Time is not available anywhere on streaming, but is currently rentable on YouTube at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include The Leftovers, Devs, Lost, Evil, The Fall Guy, Speak No Evil, The Fabelmans, Licorice Pizza, Jurassic Park III, Step-Brothers, Will & Harper, Talladega Nights, Anchorman, Backspot, Timeline, The Time Machine, A Clockwork Orange, Star Trek Generations, Wayne's World, Primer, Zodiac, Back to the Future Part III, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Bones and In Time. We'll be back next week to wrap up SepTIMEber, as Hayley's got the keys to the vault yet again and has put forth the Rachel McAdams 2012 time-travel romance About Time as our monthly consideration for induction into the pod-canon. Similar to the last few movies we've covered, About Time is unfortunately not available to stream at the moment in Canada, though maybe in time that will change. Once again it is rentable on YouTube and via the Cineplex app. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

On June 4, 1982, Nicholas Meyer arguably saved the franchise by redefining it as a space opera mashup of Horatio Hornblower and Run Silent Run Deep, with a virtuosic score by the great James Horner. Instead of making sequel to 1979's STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, Meyer cunningly chose to forge a follow-up to the 1967 episode “Space Seed,” reuniting Ricardo Montalban with the iconic role of Khan, unleashing his towering performance as the ultimate antagonist. (And stick around until the end for a shocking decision about what our next movie will be!)

We all get mad about things sometimes, and during the Cold War, the U.S. government was mad about “M.A.D.”. That's because “M.A.D.” “Mutually Assured Destruction” - was a global concern on everyone's mind. And the fear that foreign countries (/cough/** Russia cough) would use nuclear weapons wasn't only causing chaos in the Oval Office. Hollywood and TV studios were just as interested in it, because where there's fear, there's an audience. And one studio - and one movie in particular - took that fear of nuclear engagement and decided to make a movie that showed exactly how horrible things could get if those missiles started flying.Rob teaches Ray and Daniel about the 1983 T.V. movie “The Day After,” which depicted the immediate and devastating fallout of a nuclear war; how Nicholas Meyer, the movie's director, went behind ABC's back in order to make film as realistic, and realistically graphic, it would be in reality; why Ronald Reagan himself said the movie made him “greatly depressed”; the fact that “The Day After” may have played a role in ending the Cold War; and how pieces of art and media, even if they're fictional, have the power to change global politics. If you like what we're doing, please support us on Patreon, or you can subscribe to our bonus content on Apple Podcasts. (Bonus) The Day After is an American television film that first aired on November 20, 1983 on the ABC television network. The film postulates a fictional war between the NATO forces and the Warsaw Pact over Germany that rapidly escalates into a full-scale nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union. The action itself focuses on the residents of Lawrence, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; and several family farms near American missile silos.[1] The cast includes JoBeth Williams, Steve Guttenberg, John Cullum, Jason Robards, and John Lithgow. The film was written by Edward Hume, produced by Robert Papazian, and directed by Nicholas Meyer. The film was broadcast on Soviet state television in 1987,[2] during the negotiations on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The producers demanded the Russian translation conform to the original script and the broadcast not be interrupted by commentary.[3] More than 100 million people, in nearly 39 million households, watched the film during its initial broadcast.[4][5][6] With a 46 rating and a 62% share of the viewing audience during the initial broadcast, the film was the seventh-highest-rated non-sports show until then, and in 2009 it set a record as the highest-rated television film in US history.[6]

Brandon Stoddard was one of the most accomplished executives in broadcast television history. In his career at ABC, he helped bring to the small screen such legendary mini-series as “Roots” and “The Winds of War,” as well as the acclaimed television series “Moonlighting” and “Roseanne.” But arguably his most consequential and controversial decision was to air the made-for-TV movie “The Day After,” which graphically depicted the effects of a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. Stoddard faced opposition from his colleagues, pundits, and even the Reagan White House, which pressured ABC to pull the film. But having conceived of the project as an impetus for people around the world to grapple with the potential of a devastating war, Stoddard forged ahead and broadcast the film in November 1983. It was an epochal event in U.S. history. One hundred million people tuned in to watch, and the movie became the most-watched in television history. It was a national moment of the kind Americans rarely share today. Journalist A. B. Stoddard, Brandon's daughter, spoke with Shane Harris about her dad's determination to air the film and what he hoped to achieve. Stoddard is well known for her political commentary and work at The Bulwark. But today, she shares personal memories of her father, his illustrious career, and the legacy of his work.
