We begin our exploration of the UK's surprisingly controversial Princess Michael of Kent with a little back story. And given that Princess Michael of Kent started life in January 1945 as a German baroness named Marie-Christine von Reibnitz, you can bet the Nazis had a hand in it! The daughter of Baron Gunther von Reibnitz, a Nazi Party member who spent time at the Russian front during the war, Princess Michael's mother, Austro-Hungarian Countess Maria Anna, was stridently anti-Nazi, enough that it got her in trouble. Her father's allegiance to the party was pretty loose by the time the war came around, and he was eventually kicked out of the Nazi party entirely. This was helpful when he was later investigated by the Appeals Tribunal for Upper Bavaria after the war ended. Meanwhile, Gunther's somewhat impromptu wartime marriage to Princess Michael's mother turned out to be a bigamist marriage, since old Gunther had never had his first marriage annulled in the Catholic Church, which declared Princess Michael and her older brother legitimate, but essentially ended things between Gunther and Maria Anna. He skipped out on the whole "wreckage of Europe" thing and moved to Mozambique and a third marriage there. This left Countess Maria Anna in the post-war wreckage of Europe with two very young children. She did what aristocrats always do: she packed up a bunch of gemstones - Europe was flooded with gemstones from out of luck rich folks at the time - boarded a boat for Australia, and set her family up in their next chapter by selling the stones into a much more favorable market. Einige von ihnen aber sagten: Mit Hilfe von Beelzebul, dem Anführer der Dämonen, treibt er die Dämonen aus. Andere wollten ihn auf die Probe stellen und forderten von ihm ein Zeichen vom Himmel. Doch er wusste, was sie dachten, und sagte zu ihnen: Jedes Reich, das in sich gespalten ist, wird veröden, und ein Haus ums andere stürzt ein. Wenn also der Satan mit sich selbst im Streit liegt, wie kann sein Reich dann Bestand haben? Ihr sagt doch, dass ich die Dämonen mit Hilfe von Beelzebul austreibe. Wenn ich die Dämonen durch Beelzebul austreibe, durch wen treiben dann eure Anhänger sie aus? Sie selbst also sprechen euch das Urteil. Wenn ich aber die Dämonen durch den Finger Gottes austreibe, dann ist doch das Reich Gottes schon zu euch gekommen. Solange ein bewaffneter starker Mann seinen Hof bewacht, ist sein Besitz sicher; wenn ihn aber ein Stärkerer angreift und besiegt, dann nimmt ihm der Stärkere all seine Waffen weg, auf die er sich verlassen hat, und verteilt die Beute. Wer nicht für mich ist, der ist gegen mich; wer nicht mit mir sammelt, der zerstreut. Ein unreiner Geist, der einen Menschen verlassen hat, wandert durch die Wüste und sucht einen Ort, wo er bleiben kann. Wenn er keinen findet, sagt er: Ich will in mein Haus zurückkehren, das ich verlassen habe. Und wenn er es bei seiner Rückkehr sauber und geschmückt antrifft, dann geht er und holt sieben andere Geister, die noch schlimmer sind als er selbst. Sie ziehen dort ein und lassen sich nieder. Ich sage euch: Wenn er schon nicht deswegen aufsteht und ihm seine Bitte erfüllt, weil er sein Freund ist, so wird er doch wegen seiner Zudringlichkeit aufstehen und ihm geben, was er braucht. Darum sage ich euch: Bittet, dann wird euch gegeben; sucht, dann werdet ihr finden; klopft an, dann wird euch geöffnet.
